FOREMAN / FORMAN Connection

Foreman / Furman Family

Other spellings: FURMANSKI / FORMAN

My paternal Aunt Anna GALUS married Felix FOREMAN in 1938.  Felix was a son of Joseph and Mary FURMAN / FOREMAN.  Following is what I have gathered on the FOREMAN family.  I have connected with two other FOREMAN researchers.  This family connects to the MORITZ Family.

Joseph and Marianna FURMAN - Great great grandparents of my two FOREMAN cousins

Joseph and Mary were named on their three sons' marriage records:

Platte County Marriages, book 4, 7 Oct 1890
John FURNAMSKI (sic), son of Joseph FURNAMSKI and Marcyanna KOSZ

Platte County Marriages, book 3, 22 Oct 1888
Martin FURMASKI, son of Joseph FURMASKI and Martha KOST

Martin's second marriage, St. Adalbert's Church, Chicago, Illinois,  18 Sep 1906
Martin FURMANSKI, son of Joseph FURMANSKI and Martina KOS

Platte County Marriages, book 3, page 41, 22 Nov 1887
Michael FOREMAN, son of Joseph FOREMAN and Marig____ KUSZ

1900 U.S. Census Butler Twp., Platte County, Nebraska

According to this census, Joseph FURMAN was born April 1813 in Poland.  His wife Mariana was born Jul 1830 in Poland.  They both immigrated to the U.S. in 1880 and were married 49 years.  Marianna was the mother of 8 children and 4 children were living at the time of the census.  I have found sons John, Martin and Michael but have not found the 4th living child.

Wife; Married 49 years, c1851. She had 8 children, 4 living; Parents born Poland Aust; Immig. 1880; In the US 20 yrs; Cannot read, write or speak English.

I have not found Joseph or Marianna in the 1910 U.S. census.

Questions yet to be answered:

We have not found where in Poland Joseph and Marianna are from.  I found a Sebastian FURMANSKI in the microfilmed parish records of Łęki Górne / Leki Gorne, Galicia, Poland.  This is the village where my GALUS and KUDRON families originated.  Sebastian's first wife was Anna PODRAZA, a daughter of Joannis PODRAZA and Catharina SZYMANSKA. Sebastian gave his birthplace as Szynwałd / Szynwald, which is a few kilometers south of Łęki Górne.  I checked the Szynwałd microfilms, but did not find anyone from Joseph and Marianna's family.

Update: Dec 2014
The Morman FamilySearch.org website is in the process of indexing and/or uploading images of their extensive microfilm holdings. Once in a while I search for ongoing genealogy brick walls and entered a search for the FOREMANs in the Polish records.

I have ordered the LDS microfilms for the Jodlowa Parish (Dec 2014).  They are available at the W. Dale Clark Library in downtown Omaha, Nebraska.

We have not found the FURMAN Family on a ship passenger list as yet.  Some time back I wrote to the Nebraska State Historical Society asking them to search for the naturalization papers of the FURMANSKI / FOREMAN family.  I received a packet of information, which included the Final naturalization papers for Mike FURMAN of Duncan, Nebraska.

Items of note on Mike's naturalization papers:
Date of Naturalization was 22 Sep 1906
Mike Furman of Duncan, Nebraska, occupation Farmer, was born in Austria on 29 Sep 1867
Mike arrived in the United States at the Port of Baltimore, Maryland, on or about Sep 1867 (name of the ship was blank).
I wonder if this date is in error. According to his naturalization papers, Michael was born in September 1867.  (His tombstone has his birthdate as 18 September 1868.)  ALL of the census entries for the FURMANSKI / FOREMAN family indicate they immigrated in 1880.
Mike first resided in Arkansas for 3 years, and has been residing in the State of Nebraska for the last Thirty-six years, which computes to the 1867 year of arrival.

We have yet to determine where Joseph and Marianna are buried.  Since they were living in Butler Township in Platte County Nebraska, it is reasonable to speculate that they may be buried in St. Stanislaus Cemetery in Duncan.  Their sons, Martin and Michael, are buried in the St. Stanislaus Cemetery.

1900 U.S. census gives his date of birth as May 1864

I found the marriage records of two of Martin and Mary's children in the Platte County marriage extracts. Mary's maiden name is given as DROZD on one and as DRODZ on the other. The 1900 census listing notes Martin and Mary's birth month and year. Martin died 6 Aug 1928, Mary died 15 Apr 1905. Both are buried at the St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery, Duncan, Platte County, Nebraska.

Martin and Mary DROZD were the parents of the following children:

Michael was born 20 Sep 1889 in Nebraska. He died in 1968 and is buried in the St. Stanislaus Catholic Cemetery, Duncan, Platte County, Nebraska.

She married Joseph CZARNICK/CZARNIK (b. 6 Mar 1893, son of Kazimierz and Katherine KANTOR CZARNICK) 8 Nov 1916 at St. Stanislaus Church, Duncan, Platte County, Nebraska. They were the parents of five children. Helena died 19 Sep 1985; Joseph died 27 Sep 1976. Both are buried at Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska.

I have photos of their tombstones at St. Bon's Cemetery. I have connected with a son of Philip.

 Stephen died at birth.

Information from a grandson of Martin and Mary indicates Martin married after the death of Mary to a woman named Tekla ZMUDA from Chicago. They divorced shortly afterward.

The Polish Genealogical Society of America website pgsa.org has a Marriage Index of Polish parishes in Chicago through 1915.  The marriage of Martin FURMANSKI and Thecla ZMUDA is included in this index

Furmanski, Martin, Zmuda, Thecla, date of marriage 18 Sep 1906, parish St. Adalbert Church, vol. 4, page 122, LDS microfilm 1704766 item 4

The divorce decree, which was signed 24 Dec 1909 in the District Court of Platte County, Nebraska, named a 2-year-old child, Mary, from this marriage.  A copy of the divorce decree was posted to the FOREMAN MyFamily site.

FamilySearch.org now has the images of the marriage records for the Chicago Catholic Churches online.  Martin's parents were Joseph and Martina nee Kos.  Thecla Zmuda was a daughter of Adalbert Durolek and Katharina nee Dudek.  Thecla Durolek was previously married to Adam Zmuda 21 Feb 1898 at St. Adalbert Parish.  (Marriages 1884-1915, page 362, image 197 of 838)

After his death, Michael's wife Anna married Stanislaus KULA on 19 Oct 1912 in Duncan, Platte County, Nebraska.

Another FOREMAN?
In the 1885 Nebraska State Census for Platte County, Nebraska I found the following family:
Page 3, ED 631, Burrows Precinct (this would be around Tarnov, NE)
Dwelling 21, Family 21
Furmasky J., white, male, age 45, farmer, born Poland
Furmasky, Mary, white, female, age 40, wife, keeping house, born Poland

I do not know if this family is connected to the FOREMANs or not.
