Unrelated GALUS Families -- Illinois

My GALUS family immigrated to Nebraska.  Early in my research two of my aunts said that a couple of my grandfather's brothers were in Illinois and Michigan.  Over the years I compiled information about GALUS families located in Illinois and Michigan in an effort to try and track down my grandfather's brother Joseph GALUS.

This page contains some of the miscellaneous information I accumulated on Illinois GALUS families.  I have no personal knowledge about these people, so it is possible I have made some errors in linking data from different sources to specific individuals. Please let me know of any corrections to be made --

Ignatz GALUS and Sofia nee                ( BOCHNIAK )

FamilySearch.org has a marriage record for an Ignacy GALUS and a Mrs. Zofia BOCHNIAK.  They were married 7 July 1919 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.  Ignacy was 33 years old and Zofia was 45.

The 1920 U.S. census lists an Ignatz and Sofie GALOS, whose ages are 33 and 50, respectively.  There were 7 children enumerated with them.  If the marriage record and the 1920 census listing are for the same couple, the children listed would have to be from Sofie's marriage to a Mr. BOCHNIAK.  I have not found Sophie or children Joseph, Katherine and Stella in the 1910 census as yet.

Gabriel SAVONEVICH and Anna nee GALUS

Years ago it was possible to search an online version of historic Chicago newspapers.   An obituary for an Anna Savonevich, nee Galus in the Chicago Tribune (27 Nov 1964) noted these details.

Anna was the wife of Gabriel, mother of Helen (Roman) Kurzy, Vera (James) Lodozynski, Olga (Henry) Kutza, and Walter (Paula).  Her funeral was 28 Nov 1964 at Queen of All Saints Basilica.  She was buried at St. Adalbert's Cemetery.

An older version of the Polish Genealogical Society of America (PGSA.org) web site had a Dziennik Chicagoski 1930-1971 Death Notice Index.  Both Anna and Gabriel were listed in the index.

Savonevich, Anna, died 11/25/1964, note: Galus/husb. Gabriel, date of notice 27 Nov 1964
Savonevich, Gabriel, died 4/18/1966, note: /wife Anna, date of notice 19 Apr 1966

In response to an email I received 31 Jan 2017 from a young woman in Russia asking about the Savonevich / Galus entry in my Rootsweb WorldConnect file, I looked for additional information about this family at FamilySearch.org (free) and Ancestry.com (paid subscription).

Gabriel Savonevich and Anna Galus married 1 Jun 1912 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.  Gabriel was 26 years old (born about 1886), Anna was 19 years old (born about 1893).

Ancestry.com had an image of Anna's Declaration of Intention for Naturalization, which provided a great deal of information about her and Gabriel.  She said she was born 2 Aug 1889 in Dzary, Poland; according to the ship passenger list, she was born in Zdzary.  She arrived at the Port of New York on 7 Apr 1909 on the S.S Kronprinz Wilhelm.

1942 Declaration of Intention - Anna Galus Savonevich

I have not found the ship passenger list at Ancestry.com.  The Ellis Island site has a copy; the date of arrival was 6 Apr 1909.  The manifest shows Anna Galus, age 20, from Zdzary, was going to Chicago, Illinois to be with her sister Maryanna Galus.  Her nearest living relative in Poland was her father Josef Galus in Zdzary.

My GALUS family is from Łęki Górne / Łęki Dolne (Leki Gorne / Leki Dolne), between Tarnów and Pilzno in southeast Poland.  There is a Village of Zdżary about 4 miles northwest of Łęki Górne.  A search for Zdzary in the JewishGen Gazetteer shows two other areas also named Zdżary close to Tarnów.

The U.S., Social Security Applications and Claims Index, 1936-2007 at Ancestry.com has an entry for her that names her parents.  I have not found Anna in the baptism index for some of the parishes in the Tarnow Diocese at FamilySearch.org.
