My 4th great grandfather, Adalbertus / Wojciech GALUS, first married
Cunegundis PODRAZA (daughter of Jacob) on 2 Nov 1778 in Łęki
Górne, Poland. I have found baptism records for 13 children born
to
them. Cunegundis died on 21 Aug 1814. On 24 October 1814 Adalbertus
married a widow Agatha TWORKOWA / TWOREK.
Their son Michael was born 12 September 1815. Michael GALUS married Catharina nee FLAKUS, daughter of Michael FLAKUS and Marianna WACHA, on 17 November 1840. I have found baptism records for eight children born to Michael and Catharina.
These descendants of Michael and Catharina are my half first cousins
four removed. I know of four of them who immigrated to Nebraska
in the United States.
Bartholomew GALUS, whose father was a first cousin of my great great grandfather, immigrated with his family to the United States and settled around Duncan in Platte County, Nebraska. More below

In the course of my research I've come across several other GALUS / GOLUS / GALLUS families. So far, I have not connected them to my family. Unrelated (so far) GALUS Families
I found a picture of John and Catherine GALUS SLIVA in the book Franciscans in Nebraska. At the time of this discovery, I had no other information about John and Catherine. (There is a copy of this book at the downtown Omaha, Nebraska, Public Library. There is now an online version of Franciscans in Nebraska, scroll down to bottom of page. https://sites.rootsweb.com/~nechurch/catholic/Franciscans/pages/pt1/fine0007.htm)
John and Catherine were enumerated in the 1900 Nebraska census in Lost Creek Township, Platte County.
John and Catherine are buried in St. Michael Catholic Cemetery, Tarnov,
Platte County, Nebraska.
I have on loan the LDS birth/baptism and marriage microfilms for the Polish villages of Leki Gorne and Leki Dolne. This is where both my Grandparents, Stanislaus and Martha KUDRON GALUS, were born. Since I have found other connections between Leki and the Platte/Nance county area, I checked these films to see if I could find anything for John and Catherine. According to the 1900 census, they were married around 1867, so I first checked for a marriage record. I found the following:
The calculated birth years based on their age at the time of their marriage are consistent with the years on their tombstone.

Thomas SLIWAThe Sliva Family name came to this area on July 15, 1877, when Mr. and Mrs. John Sliva and their 3 sons came from Galica, Poland, to Platte County in Nebraska. John had married Catherine Galus in Galica, Poland.... They were the parents of 6 children: 1. Bartholomew....
Bartholomew (Barney) born in Poland on August 24, 1869 [see birth record above from microfilmed church records]; married Sophie Jaworski October 4, 1985 (sic) [based on age their first child, this should probably be 1895]. They farmed 2 miles northwest of Platte Center. In 1907 they sold this land to Frank Krings and bought land one half miles southwest of Tarnov. Barney died November 1, 1914.
They were the parents of 12 children [there are only 8 listed; the last one was born not long before Barney died]:In the St. Michael Archangel Church, Tarnov, Platte County, Nebraska, 125th Anniversary Book I found baptism and death inforormation for these children of Bartholomew and Sophia:
- John, born December 8, 1897; educated at St. Michael's in Tarnov; married Emma Starzec February 14, 1922, at Tarnov; moved to Seattle in 1941.
- Joseph A., born February 28, 1901; married Frances Placek February of 1929 at Tarnov. They farmed near Tarnov, Cornlea, and Lindsay, and then moved to Omaha. He died December 29, 1961. They were the parents of 11 children: Patricia, Edna, Germaine, Adrian, Verna, Marlene, Roland, Reynold, Lyle, Bonnie, Carroll Anthony.
- Clara S., born July 27, 1902; married Martin J. Liss June 18, 1924, at Tarnov; moved to Silver Creek; died December 26, 1986; buried at Silver Creek.
- Josephine, born February 6, 1904; married Joseph Fajman February 1, 1925; died October 2, 1958; buried at Platte Center.
- Theodosia (Teddy), born April 6, 1907; married Joseph Paprocki February 18, 1925; farmed northwest of Tarnov and then moved to Columbus.
- Adolph, born May 5, 1910; married Leona Zakwzeski February 3, 1932, at rural St. John's; lives in Columbus.
- Alex, born March 6, 1912; married Vera Szotaski February of 1946, at Krakow; lives in Fullerton.
- Dennis, born July 17, 1913; married Josephine Starzec October 24, 1939. She is the daughter of Stanley Starzec and Mary Jarosz; farmed the home place; [Dennis] died June 10, 1973; [Josephine] lives in Columbus. They are the parents of 7 children: Mary (stillborn February 21, 1941), James, Margaret, William, Bernard, Thomas, Timothy.
I have photographs of these tombstones on page:
- Anna, born 3 Sep 1899, died at the age of 5 years of diptheria on 4 Sep 1904. She is buried in the St. Michael's cemetery in Tarnov, Nebraska
- Theofil. The baptism record dated 23 Apr 1905 has the name "Theodosia", but the tombstone and death information gives the name of Theofil. He died on 25 May 1906, and is buried at St. Michael's cemetery.
- Cecilia Barbara, born 22 Sep 1908, died on 24 Sep 1908. She is buried at St. Michael's cemetery.
- Bartłomiej, born 6 Feb 1915, died 8 Apr 1915. The tombstone in St. Michael's cemetery has his date of death as 30 January 1915. I noticed in the St. Michael's Anniversary Book that the death entry preceding Bartlomiej's was dated 30 January 1915. I wonder if the date on the previous entry was accidentally noted when a stone was later placed on his grave.

I have come to realize that many men who were baptized "Stanislaus" in Poland, went by the name of Charles or Charley in the United States. Sometimes it appears they used the names Stanislaus and Charles interchangeably. I have yet to find an explanation for this phenomenon. From John and Catherine's marriage record and the birth records of
their sons, we see that Catherine's parents were Michael GALUS and
Catharina FLAKUS. Catherine was 25 years old at the time of her
marriage; her calculated year of birth is 1844. I looked for
Catherine's birth/baptism record in 1844 and I found the following:
I went back to the marriage microfilm and looked for a record for
Catherine's parents. Starting with the year 1844 (Catherine's birth
year) and working backwards, I found the following marriage record:
Again, using the calculated birth year from the marriage record, I
looked for a birth record for Michael GALUS. I found:
I have studied and extracted hundreds of records from these two microfilms, so when I saw the house number 148 on this record, my heart skipped a beat! The house number given on the birth records of my GGG Grandfather Adalbertus GALUS (baptized 1 Apr 1787) and his 12 siblings was 148. GGG Grandfather Adalbertus' parents were Adalbertus and Cunegundis PODRAZA GALUS.
I went back to the marriage microfilm. Starting with Michael's birth
year of 1815, I worked backwards through the records looking for his
parents' marriage record. I found:
My GGGG Grandparents', Adalbertus and Cunegundis PODRAZA GALUS, thirteen children were born between July 1780 and March 1808. Nearly all of them had house # 148 noted on them. So, it appears that Cunegundis died and Adalbertus married a second time at the age of 65 years. One year later my Half GGG Granduncle Michael was born to Adalbertus and his second wife Agatha TWOREK. This means that Michael's daughter, Catharine GALUS SLIVA, is my half first cousin four times removed.
I later located the death record for my GGGG Grandmother Cunegundis PODRAZA GALUS:
Sometime back another researcher asked me if I knew if John PROROK's wife was a GALUS. At the time I didn't have much information about this family. Using information from the Nebraska censuses, I searched for records in the Leki Gorne marriage and birth/baptism records that might match. I discovered that John's wife Maryanna was indeed a GALUS and that she was a sister of Catherine GALUS SLIVA and later connected her to John GALUS/GOLUS from Sherman County, Nebraska. Maryanna, Catherine and John are my half first cousins four removed.
I found John and Maryanna PROROK in the online 1900 Platte County census for Lost Creek Township. According to this census, both John and Mary immigrated in 1881; John was a naturalized citizen.
I first checked the 1878 Leki (Austria Poland) Parish marriage records and found the following entry:
The "+" next to Michael's name (Marianna's father) indicates he was deceased at the time of his daughter's marriage.
The calculated birth year for both John and Mary was 1852, based on their ages at the time of their marriage. Following are their birth records:
1851 August; born 11, baptized 11, house 94
Marianna, Catholic, daughter, legitimate
Father: Michael, son of Adalbert Galus and Agatha Tworek,
hortulanus
Mother: Catharina, daughter of Michael Flakus and Maria
Wacha
Godparents: Joannes Thomasiewicz, Anna wife of Adalbert Zima

Children of John and Maryanna GALUS PROROK
Catharina \ Katie PROROKSince John and Marianna didn't immigrate until 1881, I checked the birth records for any children born to them in Poland. Starting with the year 1878 (the year of John and Marianna's marriage), I found:
The census listing above for John and Mary indicates Mary was the mother of nine living children. There were eight children enumerated in the census with them, Catharina makes nine.
Catharina married George VOISHOSKE on 15 Nov 1899 at Tarnov, Platte County, Nebraska. George was a son of Thomas and Anna KUS \ KUSH WOJIECHOWSKI \ VOISHOSKE. Six children were enumerated with them in the 1910 Platte County, Nebraska, census: Phelix, Lewis, Anna, Hellen, Joe and John.
Thomas PROROKAccording to the 1900 Nebraska census, Tom / Thomas was born December 1881 in Nebraska. Tom married Josephine KUSH 15 Feb 1905 at St. Mary's in Pilsno, Polk County, Nebraska. Josephine was born 15 Mar 1887 in Shelby, Polk County, a daughter of Thomas and Kathryn BARNAS KUS \ KUSH. In 1930 Thomas and Josephine were enumerated in Fullerton, Nance county, Nebraska with their children: Marie, age 23; Adaline, age 21; Victoria, age 19; Loretta, age 17; Donald, age 12; and Arnold, age 10. Tom PROROK died 24 Feb 1947; Josephine died 11 Sep 1981. Both are buried in Fullerton, Nance County, Nebraska. (Marriage and burial information from a grandson of Thomas and Kathryn BARNAS KUSH.)
John PROROKThe 1900 Nebraska Platte County census shows that John was born November 1882 in Nebraska. The 1917 Draft Registrations for Nebraska has a John J. PROROK of Monroe, Platte County, Nebraska. The date of birth given is October 1880, however on the registration form is the notation: "Father of Registrant does not know Date of Birth". It is also noted that the registrant was "Deaf and Dumb". His nearest living relative was John PROROK, Sr.
Frank PROROKThe 1900 Nebraska Platte County census shows that Frank was born August 1885 in Nebraska. On the 1917 Nebraska Draft Registration Frank gave his date of birth as August 20, 1885. Frank married Kathryn (Katie) KUSH, daughter of Ludwik (William) and Margaret BOGUS KUSH, about 1910. Katie was born about September 1892. Frank and Katie had the following children:
Frank and Kathryn are listed in the Platte County cemetery extracts. They are buried at St. John's cemetery in Joliet Township. According to the extract, Frank was born Aug. 20, 1885 and died Oct. 20, 1954. Kathryn / Katherine was born Sep. 23, 1891 and died Apr. 27, 1837.
Mary PROROKAccording to the 1900 Platte County census, Mary was born November 1887 in Nebraska. She married John MICEK, a son of Andrew and Appolonia KUSH MICEK, on 11 Nov 1908 at Tarnov, Platte County, Nebraska.
Joseph PROROKThe 1900 Platte County census shows that Joseph was born July 1893. The 1917 Draft Registration card only gives a year of birth as 1889. On the resistration form was noted: "This man was born and still is a deaf mute". His occupation was listed as farm laborer, working for Chas F. Prorok.
Josephine \ Josy PROROKJosephine was born 15 Aug 1893 near Platte
Center, Platte County, Nebraska. She married Joseph KUSH on 11 Feb 1914
at Tarnov, Platte County, Nebraska. Joseph was a son of Ludwik
(William) and Margaret BOGUS KUSH, born 15 Sep 1889 around Duncan,
Platte County, Nebraska. Josephine died 19 Oct 1945 at Genoa, Nance
County, Nebraska; Joseph died about 25 Feb 1947. Both are buried at
Sts. Peter and Paul Cemetery, Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska
The 1900 Platte County census shows that Charles was born May 1895. He married Agnes KUSH, a daughter of Ludwik (William) and Margaret BOGUS KUSH on 21 Oct 1914 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church at Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska.
Michael PROROKAccording to the 1900 Platte County census, Michael was born October 1897. The Nebraska 1917 Draft Registration has a Michael PROROK whose date of birth was given as September 1897. On the registration is the notation: "Father of registrant does not know the date of birth". The registration also notes that the registrant is "Deaf and Dumb". He was a self-employed farmer at Monroe in Platte County. His nearest living relative was John Prorok, also of Monroe, Platte County, Nebraska.
I first found John and Lucy GALUS in the Nebraska 1900 Soundex. I had conflicting information about Lucy's maiden name. The record for their son John's first marriage shows his mother's name as Lucia J. MICEK. From marriage record extracts for Platte County I found a different maiden name for Lucy. Their son John's record for his second marriage shows Lucy's name as Lucy JOSICZA. In the marriage record for their son Frank, Lucy's name is shown as L. JASECA. The downtown Omaha Public Library has these marriage extracts in the Genealogy Reference room; they are also available from the Nebraska State Genealogy Society.

John and Lucy later moved from Platte County to Sherman County. In 1910 they were enumerated in Logan Township (Sherman County). John was 56 years old, Lucy was 50; according to this census they immigrated in 1882. Enumerated with them were: son, Frank S., age 21 and single; son, Joseph, age 19 and single; son, Thomas, age 16 and single; daughter, Dollie, age 14 and single; son, Peter, age 11 and single. All of these children were born in Nebraska.
In August 2002 I found the marriage record for John and Lucy in the LDS microfilms for Leki Gorne and Leki Dolne, Galicia, Austria Poland. I subsequently found their birth/baptism records.
Lucy died in 1914. After Lucy's death, John married a widow, Francis (sic) LEWANDOWSKI nee SNWOLSKI on 24 Nov 1914. On this marriage record John named his parents: Father, Michael GALUS, born Poland; Mother, Katie FLEAKUS, born Poland. Frances was a daughter of Stanley SNWOLSKI and Katie DEMBOWSKI, both born German Poland. John and Frances were enumerated in the 1920 Sherman County Census in Loup City. John's son Peter was living with them at the time.
Children of John and Lucia JASICA GALUS/GOLUS
According to the 1900 census, Catherine was born in September of
1882 in Illinois. While searching through the Platte County marriage
extracts I found the following entry:
I ordered a copy of the actual marriage record from the Platte County Courthouse in Columbus, Nebraska. This document named Joseph's parents as Joseph TOCZEK and Barbara KOGUT. Catherine's mother's name was blank.
The calculated birth year matches the census entry as does her birthplace. I later found Joseph and Catherine in Sherman County, which is where "my" Catherine's father, John, later resided. It would have been a great help had the name of the bride's mother been filled in on the marriage record, but such was not the case.
In 1910 Joseph and Catherine were living in Logan Township in Sherman County. The 1910 census spells their last name as TOCCIC. Five children were enumerated with Joseph and Kate: Leo, age 10; Joseph, age 8; what looks like Haller but would be Helen, age 6; Josie, age 4 and Ignace, age 1 7/12.
Joseph and Catherine were enumerated in Elm Township, Sherman County, Nebraska, in 1920. Joe was 58 years old; Katie as 37. Enumerated with them were their children: Leo, age 19; Joe, age 17; Helen, age 15; Josie, age 13; Ignaz, age 10; Clara, age 8; Alfonso, age 6; and Agnes, age 4. Joe, Sr. was born in Austria and immigrated in 1892. Katie was born in Illinois, all the children were born in Nebraska.
Catherine died in 1929. Joseph and his family were enumerated in Elm
Township, Sherman County in 1930.
I found Joseph, Catherine and most of their children on the online cemetery extract for St. Josaphat's Cemetery. Catherine died in 1929, Joseph in 1935.

A daughter of John and Anna TUTAJ GOLUS indicates that Ida's name is Della. The 1900 census gives Della's date of birth as September 1896. On 4 Feb 1914 Adella (Della) married Adam AUGUSTYN, a son of Charles and Mary SZOTKOWSKI AUGUSTYN, in Loup City, Sherman County, Nebraska.
Until November 2005 I had Frank and Tekla included on my "Unrelated
GALUS" page. A Guestbook entry from Ronald GOLUS in September lead to
further correspondence and the determination that Frank was also
related to the folks on this page -- and therefore to me. Ronald is a
descendant of John and Lucia JASICA GALUS/GOLUS. I currently do not
have documented proof of Frank's relationship, but a cousin of Ron's
who lives in Sherman County verbally confirmed that Frank was related.
Subsequent correspondence with Ron included excerpts of Frank and
Tekla's obituaries, which has given me a lead. Per Tekla's obituary:
"She was married in Chicago to Mr. Frank Golus, and lived there 12
years...." The Polish Genealogical Society
web page includes a Marriage Index for Polish Parishes in Chicago
through 1915. The index has an entry for:

Frank Golus came to America from Poland about 49 years ago, settling in Chicago, where he married a year later. A number of years after his marriage, Mr. Golus with his wife, moved to Platte County in Nebraska, near the town of Columbus, where they remained for seven years before coming to Loup City.
In Loup City Mr. Golus was employed as a railroad hand, supporting his wife and foster children, a niece and nephew of Mrs. Golus, namely Mary Ciochon, now Mrs. Stanley Janulewicz, and Mike Ciochon, whom they took to raise at the very early ages of 18 months and five years, respectively.
Mrs. Frank Golus passed away at her home in Loup City Sunday afternoon at 4 o'clock p.m. after an illness of but a few days. Mrs. Golus suffered a stroke the previous Friday, which resulted in her death.
Deceased was born in Poland on February 14, 1860, and came to the United States when she was 20 years of age. She was married in Chicago to Mr. Frank Golus, and lived there 12 years, when they moved to Platte County, Nebraska, where they lived 7 years. For the past 28 years they have lived in Sherman County, most of the time in Loup City. One child was born to them, which died in infancy.
Besides her husband, she leaves to mourn her death, two sisters living in Chicago, a niece, Mrs. Stanley Janulewicz of Loup City, and a nephew living in Omaha, both of whom were brought up in the Golus home.

Irena GALUSIrena's year of birth would have been about 1909. And yet, the Irene enumerated with Frank and Clara in the 1920 and 1930 censuses was born about 1913, and she was still alive even though the death date on the stone said 1911. I took another look at the 1910 census, because the 2-year-old daughter buried in the St. Stanislaus cemetery should have been listed. When I extracted this census information many years ago, I was initially unable to figure out the name of Frank and Clara's first child. I thought it might be "Fre" even though the first letter didn't look like the "F" in Frank's name. Here's a screen print of the entry from Ancestry.com.
