Sts. Peter & Paul Catholic Church
and Cemetery

Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska

These are only a few of the stones in Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery. Bruce and I visited Sts. Peter & Paul Cemetery over the 4th of July, 2000, weekend. My Grandparents, Stanislaus and Martha KUDRON GALUS, were married in the Krakow Church January 31, 1912. Their son Frank, who died at birth, is buried here in an unmarked grave. This was my first visit to the Krakow Church.

JANI I MARYANNA GOLUS
No dates on the stone
I have a strong suspicion that these are my Great Great Grandparents Jan (John) GALUS and Marianna nee PAPROCKI; Grandparents of my Grandfather Stanislaus GALUS.  My grandfather immigrated from Leki Gorne, Galicia, Austrian Poland (now Poland) to Platte County, Nebraska, with his brother Joseph in September 1898.  (Leki Gorne was under Austrian rule at this time.)

Stanislaus and Joseph had 3 aunts who immigrated to Nebraska about 1874. Maryanna GALUS, her husband Andrew PAPROCKI and several of their children settled around Tarnov, Platte County.  Sophia GALUS married Joseph ROSNO on 2 May 1875 in Columbus, Platte County, and settled near Krakow, Nance County.  Their tombstones are below.  Catharine GALUS married Franz / Frank LACHNIT on 17 Nov 1877 in Columbus.

The 1880 census shows Frank LACHNIT living in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska with his wife Catherine, 5-month-old daughter Mary, and his mother-in-law Mary Galus, age 65.  The 1885 Nebraska State census shows Frank living in Alexis Township, Butler County (just south of Platte County), with his wife Catharine, daughters Mary and Josephine, and father John GALIZ age 70 and mother Mary GALIZ age 69.  By 1900 Frank and Catharine are living  in Columbus, Franklin, Ohio, with 3 children and no mention of John or Mary GALUS.  John and Mary were not enumerated with either of their daughters Marianna PAPROCKI or Sophia ROSNO.

I believe John and Marianna died in Nebraska between 1885 and 1900, and that they are buried here in the Ss. Peter and Paul Cemetery.  I currently have no information to substantiate my belief.  I doubt that they would have gone back to Poland.  My cousin Pawel BANDUR from Szczecin, Poland, whose family is also from Leki Gorne, visited the Leki Parish priest in Sept. 2006, looking for death records for several of our ancestors. The priest could not find records for either Jan or Marianna in the Death Register 1898 - present.  (The Death Register up to 1898 is on LDS microfilm, which I searched.)
