GEORGE GHERING b. July 1, 1837 in Taebingen, Germany. He came to the US in 1843 with his parents. He married AMANDA MCBRIDE at Sunville, PA on April 12, 1864. He was working at a sawmill near Drake's oil well when oil was found in 1859. He later teamed and hauled oil for years at Petroleum Center and other places. He also hauled lumber. The family resided in Cherrytree Township. They had six children: Christian "Christy," Thomas Mack "Tommy," George "Lowrey," Amanda "Laura" (Hamilton), Margaret "Maggie" (Holder), and Christina "Tina." George and Amanda were charter members of the Jamison Corners Free Methodist Church.George was stricken with paralysis around 1899, and was an invalid for many years. He died in his home Feb. 28, 1914, and was buried in Jamison Corners Cemetery after a service in the Jamison Corners Free Methodist Church.
George’s son, Tommy b. September 19, 1867 married Mary Louisa "Louise" Chandler (after a long-distance courtship by mail) December 16, 1890. They built a home that is still standing on the southwest corner of Jamison Corners. Their son, George Holice Ghering b. September 24, 1897, d. December 1987, lived in the family homestead and made a living cutting timber and pumping oil on the family land his whole life. He also helped drill oil wells in the Titusville and Cherrytree Township areas. The sawmill he built with his son, Thomas Milton Ghering is still in use.
Richard Kent Smith, a descendant of Isaac Henry Ghering, gave me a beautiful picture of my grandfather George H. Ghering (George's grandson) that he took about 1985 when he interviewed my grandfather.
