Michael Schini/Schaney
(1807-1882)

Michael Shaney was born (figuring his age from the Harrison Co. census records) about 1807, and died in 1882. It is not known where he is buried. According to the DAR records of Harrison Co. deaths, he was from Heidleburg. He may have been the German equivalent of James Michael, since one of his sons is J. Michael, Jr.

He first shows up in Harrison Co. in Jan. of 1836, he must have had a wife and child. His wife's name is unknown, but on the school census of 1847, Harrison Co. schools (they only did 2 years) he has a daughter Catherine age 15 yrs, putting her birth year about 1835. Where she was born is unknown. On the 1840 census of Harrison Co. there is one female child under the age of 5. It might be Mary Ann, but sometimes they did not count infants. The first wife, Catherine's mother, must have died shortly after because in 1839 Michael Shaney marries Elizabeth Brown Martin, who was a widow of Nimrod Martin.

Their children were:

Mary Ann b 02 Feb. 1840, d 08 Apr 1867, m. Thomas Combs.

Jacob b 1842, left to fight in the Civil war, may not have returned, or was not heard from again.

John b 13 Mar 1844 d 10 July 1861, is buried at Elizabeth, IN.

George S. b 04 Jun 1846 d 29 Apr 1919 in Porterville, CA, married 29 Mar. 1867 Elizabeth Glaze (this is my line),

James Michael, Jr. b May 1850, d in Indianapolis, IN married 11 Nov 1870 Elizabeth Freidley; they divorced early 1900's he moved to Indianapolis and remarried,

Henry b 1852 m. twice, 1) Mary Grigson, they had one child, Charles, before she died, he m.2) Mollie Roberts and had a couple more kids. Some of his descendants still live around Elizabeth, IN., their surname is Woertz. (They have told me all they can remember)

Thomas b 1855 , I have not been able to find;

Martha b 1857 died after 1880 when she is living with her brother Henry at Elizabeth, apparently she did not marry.

Rachel b 1861 married a Bence and moved to Floyd Co. IN;

and a second Catherine. born 1862. I have never found her.

Also, in 1839, Michael Shaney became one of the trustees of St. Paul Lutheran Church, known as Seigwald's, which was about a mile north of New Middletown, IN and just north of Michael Shaney's property. This church disbanded about 1850 and the congregation scattered to St. Peter's and St. John's, Lanesville, IN. Michael Shaney sold his property about this time and bought land on the outskirts of Elizabeth, IN. He later sold this land to his grandson, John Adam Lemmel; only child of the first Catherine.

The first Catherine m John Lemmel in Harrison Co., Feb. 1850. Michael Shaney had to give his consent in the marriage records. They had one child, John Adam Lemmel b 1852. Both Catherine and John Lemmel d. 1853/1854. Michael Shaney became guardian of John Adam Lemmel, who married Rebecca Butler and had a large family.

Elizabeth Brown Martin Shaney d. 1868 and Michael Shaney m. 3rd. Louisa Kistler Anderson, who had a 5 year old son. They had a child, Sarah b. 1869. Michael Shaney and Louisa Kistler Anderson were divorced "because he was too difficult to get along with." I don't know what happened to Sarah.

I have tried to find Michael Shaney through the Lemmel connection, but so far, nothing.
