Robert Maizeland, aged 38, a former resident of Clinton Township, died at the Presbyterian hospital, Pittsburgh, Saturday afternoon following an operation for obstruction of the bowels. The deceased was the son of the late James Maizeland, of Clinton township, who was killed a few years ago at the intersection of the Plank Road and the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad near Etna. His early life was spent in Clinton township but for a number of years past he has been living in Pittsburgh. He was unmarried. He leaves his mother, Mrs. James Maizeland, and two brothers, Isaac and John L. all residing in Clinton township.

The body was taken to the homestead in Clinton township yesterday and the funeral will take place Tuesday at 2 p.m. from Middlesex Methodist Episcopal Church.

James Maizland

Butler Citizen - April 11, 1907

James Maizland, one of the best known farmers of Clinton township, was instantly killed by a B. & O. train at Mt. Royal station in Allegheny county Tuesday morning. He had been to Allegheny with a load of hay and was returning with the empty wagon; the engine struck the wagon at the crossing throwing Mr. Maizland to the track and crushing him to death almost instantly. He was 55 years of age and leaves a wife and family. Both horses were also killed.

Mr. Maizland's death was caused by the accident at the station a note of which was made in last paper - but his team was not killed, as was there stated.

He was one of Clinton Township's best citizens and his funeral at Middlesex M.E. church Thursday was largely attended.

He is survived by his wife --- Lefever and five children, John L. of Smithfield W Va, Charles of Middlesex Twp., Robert of Pittsburg, Mrs. Agnes Bowser of Prospect, and Isaac at home.

His untimely death recalls that of his brother, Robert (1852-1892), who was killed by a fall from a load of hay on Forbes Street, Pittsburgh, fifteen years ago.

The sudden death of George Maizland, of Clinton Twp., noted in last week's paper, occurred Wednesday evening of last week in his barn just after he had finished feeding his cattle.

He was called to supper, and not answering, his daughter went to the barn and found him lying on his face in the feeding room with the chop-pan yet in his hand. She had spoken to him while doing the milking, a half-hour previous.

He was 77 years of age, was brought to this country by his parents from Scotland when but one year old, and had lived on the farm on which he died for 45 years.

He married Miss Elizabeth Seif of Pittsburgh who with five children - Geo. Maizland, Mrs. James Walker, Mrs. Cyrus Stepp, Mrs. Shumaker, and Mrs. Wm. Harbison - survives him.

Mrs. Shumaker and her husband lived with him.

His brother, James (1823-1900), a bachelor, died a year ago - also in his 77th year.

MAIZLAND FUNERAL

Private services are to be held in the Albert H. Duster funeral home, West Seventh Avenue, Saturday afternoon at 2:00 o'clock for George P. Maizland, 81, of Ekastown, a lifelong resident of Clinton and Buffalo townships, Butler county, who died at his home early yesterday.

The son of the late George and Anna Maizland, Mr. Maizland was born in Scotland (note - death certificate indicates birth in PA). The family moved to Clinton township from Scotland when he was only 2 months old. Nearly a half-century ago, Mr. Maizland moved from Clinton township to Buffalo Township. He was a member of Emery Chapel of Ekastown and was widely known in Butler County.

Surviving is one daughter, Mrs. Blanche Wells, also of Ekastown; eight grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Note:  George Phillip Maizland owned a general store at Ekastown Corner (later the site of Joe Jack's Ford Dealership) - the store was a Butler County landmark.  He was also a veterinarian without formal training.

Ekastown is the name of a district rather than of a village, though Emery Methodist chapel, the H. K. SARVER store and the post office render the cross roads the central point of the district.  [End of Chapter 38 - Buffalo Township: History of Butler County Pennsylvania, R. C.
