According to Leonardo Andrea, Berkeley County was a Colonial County; the records are in Charleston Co. Courthouse, and some in the Historical Commission in Columbia.
The boundaries of Berkeley County began with the present county of Charleston and followed on west side along old Colleton to the NC line where the present counties of Greenville and Pickens join on Saluda River. From this point, it was supposed to follow the NC line to the Broad River, but for some reason did not do so. From the Pickens-Greenville line on NC Berkeley county came in a straight line down to a point where the present city of Columbia stands. From Columbia it followed the south banks of the Congaree and Santee Rivers to the Atlantic and down the Atlantic to the Colleton line. Berkeley County in its upper reaches, had an indefinite line. It comprised the present counties:
Charleston, save for a small strip across the Edisto River which in Colonial times was in Colleton.
Berkeley Co.
Dorchester which was once called St. George Parish.
Calhoun which was once called Amelia Township and later St. Matthew Parish, also once called Lewisburg Co.
Orangeburg Co., save for a small slice on west which was Colleton.
Lexington Co. which was first known as Saxe-Gotha.
Newberry Co., the western half.
Laurens Co., the western half or more properly the west 2/3rds.
Greenville, the western half.
The eastern portions of Greenville, Laurens and Newberry, as well as Spartanburg, Cherokee and Union were first laid off as part of Berkeley Co., and a little later as old Craven Co.

This volume contains extracts from surveys and memorials for land in several districts: Sec.3, Saluda River and Beaverdam Creek in Berkeley Co. for Richard and Samuel Dunkin or Duncan and Samuel's widow Sarah; Sec.5, Bush River and Beaverdam Creek in Berkeley and Craven Co. for Nelson Duncan (also written Darkett) and Samuel Dunkin or Duncan; and Sec.8, Little River above Mudlick Creek, witness Samuel Duncan in 1793 to a deed recorded in Newberry Co. Part 3, Case Study: Settlement on Little River 1755-1833; Chapter 9, Beaverdam / Mountville Settlement, Laurens Co. 1755-1833, includes a deed in Laurens Co. to land adj. Regnal Duncan in 1833.

"Citizens and Immigrants, SC, 1768" by Mary B. Warren, pg.22, 44, which includes a request about his warrant for 100 acres in Berkeley Co. on 3 Feb. 1768, and the grant of land on 22 April 1768 to James Duncan. The book includes a reference that these may be records of families long resident in SC as well as those just arrived from northern colonies. To be eligible for the bounty, immigrants must be Protestants and come to SC with written recommendation of his/her good character from civil or church officials from former residence.
