His boyhood years ... in 1854, at the age of 15, he came to Spartanburg, his father, Professor David Duncan, being one of the original faculty of Wofford College. .... During the war he served as chaplain in the Confederate army, but at the close of the struggle he entered the itinerant ministry again in the VA Conference. ... In 1875 he came back to Wofford College, ... He was elected Bishop at the General Conference in Richmond, in 1886. ... Bishop William Wallace Duncan, d. March 2, 1908. He was son of Professor David Duncan and Alice Amanda Pilmont; father b. in Ireland, was in English navy, came to America, taught first in high school in Norfolk, VA, then at Randolph-Macon College in VA, last at Wofford College, SC, by 1875. Bishop Duncan b. Dec. 20, 1839, Mecklenburg Co. VA; studied Wofford College which opened fall of 1854; after graduation entered ministry of Methodist Episcopal Church South and joined VA conference. Bishop Duncan had brother Dr. James A. Duncan, who was president of Randolph-Macon College in VA by 1875. When Bishop Duncan age 22, he m. Miss Medora Rice, of Union, SC (still living in 1908). No mention of children.

A REMARKABLE COINCIDENCE-- In 1853, four gentlemen entered their sons at a boarding school at Cokesburg in South Carolina. They had been for years intimate friends, and were clergymen in the Methodist Church. These boys remained at this institution, room-mates and classmates for two years, and entered Woffyrd (sp.) College, standing relatively first, second, third and fourth. They remained at this institution four years, and were room-mates all the time, graduating relatively first, second, third and fourth, in a large class. They entered the law office at Spartinsburg and studied law under the same chancellor. The war broke out, and at the call for troops, they entered Jenkins' Rifle Regiment from South Carolina, and were mess-mates in the same company. Being near the same height, they stood together as comrades of battle in this regiment.
At the second battle of Manassas, August 1863, a shell from te enemy's battery fell in the ranks of this company, and killed these four boys and no other in the company. They are buried on the battlefield and sleep together in the same grave. Their names are Capers, McSwain, Smith and Duncan and the sons of Bishop Capers, Rev. Dr. McSwain, Rev. Dr. Whiteford Smith and Rev. Dr. Duncan of South Carolina, and the last a brother of Rev. Dr. Duncan, of Randolph Macon College. The grave is marked by a granite cross and enclosed with an iron railing.

Death Comes to Honored Bishop.
Nashville, Tenn., Mar 2, -- A telegram was received here today announcing the death of Bishop W.W. Duncan of the Methodist Episcopal Church South, at his home at Spartansburg, S.C., at an early hour this morning. Bishop Duncan had been in ill health for some months. He was one of the most eminent men in the Southern Methodist Church. Bishop Duncan was born in Boydon, Virginia, December 27th, 1839. He was a captain in the Confederate army.
