My great grandfather Ignatz ZACH was the first of
his immediate
family to
immigrate to the United States from Kurzschwarza, Austria. He
arrived on the S.S.
Hanover, at the Port of New York, New York, on 28 May
1872. Two years later his parents, Ignatz and Anna Maria nee
, arrived in the U.S. on 27
June 1874 at the Port of New York aboard the ship America. They
were accompanied by their other five children: Franz /
Frank, John, Julia / Juliana, Walburga and Vincenz / Vincent.
Much of the information I had about my early ZACH ancestors came from
other family members, who shared what they had with my Mother many
years ago. I had no information regarding siblings of my direct
ancestors. Some time ago I found that the church parish records
for
Langschwarza, which includes the villages of Kurzschwarza and Puerbach
\ Pürbach were available on microfilm from the LDS (Mormon)
church, but the
quality of the microfilm was extremely poor.
In November \ December of 2010 I received an e-mail from, Ingrid H., an
Austrian woman whose family comes from the same area of Austria as my
ZACH and PFEIFFER families. She included in her e-mail a link to
digital copies of the Langschwarza Parish records in the Roman Catholic
Diocese of St. Pölten, which cover the years 1784 through 1871
(births) / 1900 (marriages) / 1910 (deaths). I am still in
the process of extracting my family's information. Through these
online records I have been able to find
siblings for several of my ZACH and PFEIFFER ancestors.
Ingrid indicated that prior to 1784 Langschwarza and Kurzschwarza
were part of the Schrems Parish. These records are not online
yet, but microfilms of them are available from the LDS (Mormon) church
(http://www.familysearch.org -
Based on their ages at the time of their deaths, Joseph ZACH was born
about 1725, and his wife Elizabeth nee DRUCKER was born about
1740. Considering the difference in their birth years, I wonder
if Joseph was previously married? Yet to be determined....
The online records for the Parish of Langschwarza begin with the year
1784. Joseph and Elizabeth married before 1784, so I do not have
a marriage record for them as yet. Ingrid indicated that prior to
1784 the villages of Kurzschwarza and Langschwarza were part of the
Schrems Parish. These records are not online yet. The
parish books for Schrems are available
through the LDS church on microfilm # 1046856. I will order
that film after I have gone through all of the online records.

Magdalena, daughter of Michael Weiss, Kleinhaussler, and Eva M.
Kurzschwarza, house 12, age 15 days
Eva Maria died 11 Feb 1816. The cause of death on the record
looks like "Blutflurz bei des Geburt". A German word list has
"Blutfluß" meaning hemmorhage and "Geburt" meaning birth. I
did not find a birth or death record for a child born about the same
time. I wonder if she miscarried.
After Eva Maria's death, Michael WEISS married Theresia ANIBASS, who
was from Ulrichs. They had one son, Andreas, who was born 30 Nov
1818 in Kurzschwarza, house 12. An note on Andreas' birth record
indicates he died young, but I did not find an entry for him in the
death register.
Michael WEISS, weaver and Kleinhaussler, of Kurzschwarza house 12, died
29 August 1820, at the age of 46 years. Cause of death was

Julianna's mother was a new discovery.
Until Ingid sent me the link to the online records for Langschwarza, I
did not know if Johann and Julianna had any other children beside my
great great grandfather, Ignatz. Here are their children from the

John Aloysius
ZACH, 27 May 1886, Humphrey, Plate County, Nebraska. Died 11 Jul
1902; buried St. Francis Assisi Cemetery, Humphrey, Nebraska.
Aloysius
Joseph ZACH, born 17 Mar 1888 (twin), Humphrey, Platte County,
Nebraska. Aloysius was not listed in the 1900 U.S. Nebraska
census with his widowed father. His twin sister Louise was.
Aloysius may have died young.
Louise
Caroline ZACH, born 17 Mar 1888 (twin), Humphrey, Platte County,
Nebraska. Married Frank REEVES. Died 24 Feb 1968.
John ZACH
John was born about 1852 in Austria. He immigrated with his
parents and siblings to the St. Mary's community in Platte County,
Nebraska. On 30 May 1883 John married Johanna GLASER, daughter of
Frank GLASER and Mary BERGER. According to the St. Francis Assisi
Centennial book, John was killed by a horse. He died 1 Jun
1884. He is buried at St. Mary of the Angels Cemetery, Platte
County, Nebraska. Johanna was born 27 Mar 1860 and died 15 June
1927. She remarried after the death of John.
Juliana ZACH
Julia /
Juliana ZACH was born about 1855 in Austria. She immigrated with
her parents and siblings to the St. Mary's community in Platte
county, Nebraska. Julia married Ignatz VEITH on 29 Oct 1877 in
Platte County, Nebraska. Ignatz was a son of Francis VEITH and
Josepha STEINBECK. The ZACH family history in the St. Francis of
Assisi (Humphrey) Centennial Book, lists four children born to Ignatz
and Julia: Frank, Joseph,
Vincent and Mary Ann. The Centennial Book goes on to say that
[t]he birth of Mary Ann is the last mention of Julianna's
name [in the church records]; perhaps she died after this. But we do
find mention of the name of Ignatz Veith again. He is married to
Rosalia Wolf, and 11 of their children were baptized at St. Mary's. No
record could be found of their marriage in either St. Francis' or St.
Mary's records.
I did find Ignatz and Juliana enumerated with their four children in
the 1885 Nebraska State census in Humphrey Precinct, Platte County,
Nebraska. This census was taken in June 1885. The 1900 U.S.
census for Nebraska has Ignatz with wife Rosa, who shows she was
married 10 years. So Juliana
must have died sometime between June 1885 and about 1890, when Ignatz
married a second time. Ignatz and his second wife, Rosa,
had at least 13 children. The 1910 U.S.
census shows Ignatz and Rosa enumerated in Tulare
County, California. I do not know when or where Julia died or
where she is buried.
Ignatz and Juliana had the following children:
Frank Ignatius VEITH was born 5 Sep 1878 in
Nebraska. He married Mary DITTRICH about 1917. According to
the obituaries of their two sons, Frank and Mary moved to Peetz, Logan
County, Colorado in 1929. Frank and Mary were the parents of :
Leo J. VEITH was born 24 May 1918 in Humphrey,
Platte County, Nebraska. Leo moved with his parents and siblings
to Peetz, Logan County, Colorado in 1929, where he lived until
1985. He then sold his farm and moved to a retirement community
in Seal Beach, California, where he lived with his brother
Joseph. Part of Leo's obituary reads:
Leo was Logan County's No. 1 man in the Selective Service
Drawing and was inducted into the Army in October of 1940. He spent
four years in the Army Engineer Corps. This time was spent principally
on work on the ALCAN Highway in Alaska, and in the Aleutians in combat
engineering. Leo returned to the states on Dec. 30, 1944 and was
honorably discharged on June 21, 1945, with the rank of sergeant.
Leo died 4 Mar 2004 in Long Beach, California, after surgery for a
broken hip. According to Leo's obituary, he was cremated,
graveside services were held at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling,
Colorado. He was survived by his brother Joseph of Seal Beach and
his sister Helen SPAULDING of Glendale, California, and two nieces.
Joseph W.
VEITH was born 9 Jul 1921 near Humphrey, Platte County, Nebraska.
He moved with his parents and siblings to Peetz, Logan County, Colorado
in 1929. Part of his obituary reads:
He served in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS
Saratoga. He then moved to Los Angeles, and worked in the aircraft
industry. He retired in 1983 and lived at Leisure World in Seal Beach.
Joseph died 8 Aug 2004 in Los Alamitas, California, after suffering a
stroke. He was survived by his sister Helen SPAULDING of
Glendale, California, and two nieces. Joseph was buried at
Riverside Cemetery in Sterling, Colorado.
Helen VEITH
was born about 1924 in Nebraska. She was named as a survivor in
her brothers' obituaries, as Helen SPAULDING of Glendale, California.
Joseph VEITH
was born 11 March 1880 in Nebraska.
Vincent VEITH
was born 20 Jan 1882 in Nebraska. The California Death

http://vitals.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi)

Mary Ann VEITH
was born 29 Jun 1884 in Nebraska. The Centennial Book of St.
Francis Assisi Church in Humphrey noted that Mary Ann married Joseph
HOLTZ.
In the 1900 U.S. census Mary Ann was enumerated with her father,
Ignatz, and step-mother, Rosa, in Humphrey Township in Nebraska.
In 1910 Ignatz and Rosa were enumerated in Tulare County,
California. Mary Ann was enumerated with her husband, Joseph
HOLTZ, in Orange County, Orange Township, Cleveland National Forest

Santa Ana, Orange County, California, with their children, Joseph L.,
Alban P., Margaret M., Henry A., Agnes A., Mary A. and Andrew L.
