My PFEIFER Family

Marge's Surnames

In December of 2010 I received an e-mail from Ingrid who lives in Austria.  Some of her family is from the area in Austria where my PFEIFFER and ZACH families originate.  Ingrid sent me some information on the PFEIFFERs that she had extracted from the church records.  She also sent me a link to a site that has digitized copies of the parish records for the Catholic Diocese of St. Pölten.  The Parish of Langschwarza, which includes the villages of Kurzschwarza and Puerbach, is among those that are online.  While reading these parish records written in the Old German script has been a challenge, it has been well worth the time and effort.  In addition to adding several more distant grandparents, I have found records for siblings of my immigrant ancestors who stayed in Austria.  Ingrid has been most gracious in helping me decipher some of the writing that I could not quite make out.  I am extremely grateful to her for contacting me and sharing this marvelous genealogical resource.

Three generation PFEIFER tree

Great Great Grandparents - Maria PFEIFER and Ignatz ZACH

My Great Great Grandmother was Maria / Anna Maria PFEIFFER \ PFEIFER, born 9 Dec 1821 in Kurzschwarza, Austria, house 17. She was a daughter of Michael PFEIFER and Eva nee RÖßLER \ ROSSLER. Maria married Ignatz ZACH on 24 Nov 1846 in Kurzschwarza. Maria and Ignatz arrived at the Port of New York on 27 Jun 1874 on the ship America with five of their six children: Franz, Johann (John), Juliana, Walburga and Vincenz. Their oldest son, Ignatz ZACH (my great grandfather), arrived in the United States two years earlier on 28 May 1872 on the ship Hanover through the Port of New York. Notes from other sources indicate the younger Ignatz first went to Wisconsin, and then came to Platte County, Nebraska, where his parents and siblings joined him.

3rd Great Grandparents - Michael PFEIFER and Eva RÖßLER \ ROSSLER

Old German Script exampleThe Church records for the Parish of Langschwarza are in the German language written in the Old German Script http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/S%C3%BCtterlin  Even studying this script and using a copy as a reference when going through the records, it is often difficult to decipher the letters.  For example, I have seen other interpretations of Eva's surname as KASSLER and ROFLER.  An example of her name from the marriage record of Maria PFEIFER and Ignatz ZACH shows how Rößler could be interpreted differently.  The uppercase 'K' and 'R' are similar.  The strong, double-S 'ß' could be interpreted as a lowercase 'f'.  Fortunately, the Austrian woman who e-mailed me last year about the online digitized parish records is very familiar with these German records and also the surnames that were common in them.

Michael PFEIFER and Eva ROSSLER were named as parents of the bride on the marriage record of Anna PFEIFER and Ignatz ZACH.

Michael was a son of Paul PFEIFFER and Anna Maria RAIDL.  Anna Maria was a daughter of Michael RAIDL and Anna Maria DORNHACKEL.

Eva was a daughter of Paul ROSSLER and Magdalena.  Eva's brother Kaspar married Michael PFEIFFER's sister Magdalena.

Note: in the early records the index for B and P are combined.

According to Lorenz's age at death, he was born about 1719.  His marriage record shows he was from Ruprechts, which was also in the Vitis Parish.  I found a Lorenz Pfeiffer of Ruprechts baptized in 1722.  He was a son Michael Pfeiffer and Veronica.

WIESER and HOFFMANN Connection

It is through my PFEIFER line that I am related to the WIESERs and HOFFMANNs. My great grandmother Maria PFEIFER married Ignatz ZACH.  Maria's father, Michael, had a sister Johanna, who married Mathias WIESER.  Three of their children immigrated to the United States.
Three generation PFEIFER tree

The basis for the PFEIFER / WIESER connection is a photocopy of a hand-drawn family chart that was in my Mother's genealogy files. It was part of a packet of information that a ZACH cousin sent to her. Through the St. Pölten Diocese online records I have been able to document some of the earlier relationships on this chart, as well as fill in some of the unknown information.  See PFEIFER Family Chart.

Mathias WIESER was born in Kurzschwarza near Langschwarza, Austria.  He married my 3rd great grandaunt Johanna PFEIFER (sister of Michael PFEIFER).

Langschwarza - Kurzschwarza Austria map
This is a current map showing the location of the villages of Langschwarza and Kurzschwarza in Austria.  Other villages named in the PFEIFER, HOFFMANN, WIESER and ZACH histories are Pürbach / Purbach and Gebharts.  Below is a quote from the St. Francis Assisi Centennial book saying Franciska WIESER PFEIFER was born in "Tetzles, Austria."  I was not able to find this village anywhere.  When I studied the surrounding area of Langschwarza, I noticed a village named Jetzles, east of Kurzschwarza.  A "J" could be mistaken for a "T" in a handwritten document.

In November 2010 I received an e-mail from a woman in Austria whose father's family is from the Jetzles area.  She had extracted some of the church records from Jetzles and had information about George PFEIFER and Franciska WIESER.  This information confirmed that George and Franciska were in Jetzles.

Franciska WIESER and George PFEIFER
Frances / Franciska WIESER was born 27 Jan 1812 in Austria.  Franciska married George PFEIFER in Austria. George was born 1800 in Austria and died in 1864.  She died in 1874 in Platte County, Nebraska.

The St. Francis Assisi 100th Anniversary book begins the PFEIFER family biography with the following:
The origin of the Pfeifer families in this community and so many others in this area goes back to Mrs. George Pfeifer. She was born Frances Wieser in the early 1800 in Tetzles, Austria, the daughter [should be sister, Francisca was born 1812, August was born 1824] of August Wieser and Mary Kohler. She seems to have been related to the Wiesers of this area, since Michael and Victoria Wieser [son and daughter of August Wieser] were witnesses several times for weddings of the Pfeifer boys.

She married George Pfeifer in Austria on November 23, 1834, and settled down in that country and raised a family. When George died in 1873 in Austria, Frances brought her family, now grown to adulthood but unmarried, to America and homesteaded in 1873 in Platte County in the St. Mary area.

During the following winter of 1874, Mrs. Pfeifer tried to walk from her home to the home of the daughter, now married to Richard Olmer. However, she lost her way in the blizzard and froze to death. We have no record of the place of her burial. (page 190)
The 1870 U.S. census shows Franciska enumerated in Dane County, Wisconsin

2. John PFEIFER was born 21 Nov 1843 in Austria.  He married Maria PFEIFER, daughter of Michael PFEIFER and Anna / Mary Anna ABLIEDINGER, about 1872.  John died 27 Feb 1912; Mary died 5 Feb 1937.  Both are buried at St. Francis Cemetery, Humphrey, Platte County, Nebraska.

According a note on the hand-drawn PFEIFER chart, Maria nee PFEIFER was a "first cousin of our grandfather".  I believe the chart was drawn by a ZACH cousin of mine.  At this point I am not sure who "our grandfather" refers to, therefore I am not sure how Maria is related to me.  As noted above Maria was a daughter of Michael PFEIFER and Anna / Mary Anna ABLIEDINGER.  There are a couple of references to Maria's PFEIFER family in the St. Francis Assisi (Humphrey, Platte County, Nebraska) 100th Anniversary book.
[John Pfeifer] married Mary Pfeifer, who was born on November 20, 1850, in Tetzles (note: should be Jetzeles), Austria, the daughter of Michael Pfeifer and Mary Ann Abliedinger. Her father died in Austria and her mother brought her 3 daughters, Mary, Anna, and Agnes, to the St. Mary Community. Agnes married Henry Wilde May 21, 1877, at St. Mary's, the first recorded marriage in that parish. Henry was the son of Bernard Wilde and Catherine Toberg. Mrs. Michael Pfeifer is listed among the first founders of St. Mary Parish and contributed $8.00 towards building the first church. She was born on February 20, 1823, and died on February 27, 1900, and was buried at St. Francis. She donated the Pieta now standing in the rear of our church. (page 191)
Leonard Widhalm (also spelled Withalm...) was born on June 11, 1838, at Ullerich, Austria. He followed his father in farming the land. On Augutst 20, 1867, he married Anna Pfeifer at Schwarza, Austria. She was born on July 19, 1848, the daughter of Michael Pfeifer and Mary Abliedenger. They came to the United States a few years after their marriage and settled in the St. Mary's community eventually, being one of the first parishioners of St. Mary's parish. (page 257)
I found Mary ABLIEDINGER PFEIFER with her two unmarried daughters, Maria and Agnes, and her daughter Anna and son-in-law Leonard WILHOLN  (sic) on the same ship manifest as that of my great grandfather, Ignatz ZACH.  They arrived at the Port of New York, New York on 28 May 1872 aboard the  Ship Hanover.

My Mother had a newpaper clipping from the Omaha World-Herald in her genealogy folder about the "Oldest farmer contest". The heading read: 80 Years of Farming Good for Third Place in Contest. Charles HOFFMANN is the second subject in the article (date unknown).

Charles Hoffmann, Sr., was born in Austria, January 17, 1865, and came to Pierce County, Nebraska in 1871 with his parents, Kasper and Johanna Hoffmann. They took up a homestead on the North Fork River and he's lived there ever since.  At the age of 7 he led the oxen while his father held the plow that broke the prairie sod.  The four hundred cultivated acres on his farm all were broken originally with oxen or horses, although all the farming today is with tractors. Mr. Hoffmann now operates the farm on a share basis with two sons, Raymond and Sylvester, under the name of Charles Hoffmann, Sr., & Sons. Mr. Hoffmann, Sr., acts as secretary and treasurer of the partnership. His pride and joy is his museum.  He has a room of his home devoted to his personal collection of relics, many picked up on his own farm, and mementoes gathered on trips around the country. He has devoted much time to community activities.  He helped organize and build the Catholic Church and parochial school in Pierce.  He helped organize the co-operative creamery in Pierce and farmers' grain elevators at Pierce and Hadar.  He has been on the School Board in his district (No. 7) since he was 21 years old and is its treasurer. One thing he's especially proud of--he's voted in every election since he was old enough.

Excerpt from: The Fehringers Come to Peetz
In August 1916 John Frank Fehringer and his father, George Fehringer of the St. Mary's Comunity near Humphrey, Nebraska came west to Colorado looking for land. They had heard that land was good and was not nearly so expensive as in Platte County, Nebraska so they came to find out. John was planning to marry soon and it was necessary to find a home before that.
They found a suitable location three miles west of Peetz and so on January 23, 1917 John married Clara Wemhoff at St. Mary's Church and brought her to the treeless tableland as a bride. They came to live on this place that was their home for fifty-five years where eleven of their thirteen children were born.
