On July 7, 1764, Jephthah Terrell, "Reputed Child:, received a gift of slave(s) from his father, John Terrell. Recorded August Court 1764. John Terrell mentions Jeptha Terrell as his son in his will dated 20 September 1783.

On September 15, 1806, William Heflin of Wake County, North Carolina, deeded land to Jephthah Terrell of Granville County, NC. (Granville County Deed Book T, page 22). On February 2, 1807, Jephthah Terrell, Sr. made a Deed of Gift to his 4th son, Jephthah Terrell, Jr.. (Granville County Deed Book T, page 55). On October 3, 1808, Jephthah Terrell, Sr. made a Deed of Gift to his 4th son, Jephthah Terrell, Jr. of Wake County, NC. (Granville County Deed Book T, page 329.) This may have been the land that Jephthah Terrell, Sr. bought from William Heflin.

In 1760, his wife was Obedience. In his will he left property to his wife, Margaret, so he was evidently married twice. He lived for a while in Johnston County, NC where he sold some land in Oct. 1760, and his wife, Obedience, acknowledged her dower. (County Court Min. 1759-1783, part 1, p. 12) He was mentioned as a patroler up to the Bute County line July 1767. (Ct. Min. Part 2, p. 12). Later he appeared to have been a resident of Wake County, NC, but he returned to Granville County and was on the tax rolls there from 1797 to 1810.

Jephthah Terrell, Sr. made his will dated November 18, 1809, proved Feb. court 1811. Exrs: my wife Margaret and sons Patrick, John and Jephtheh Terrell. Wts: Joel Fargreson, Sr., Jeremiah Bailey.

Obedience was born about 1735. She married Jepthah TERRILL in 1754.

The Solomon Terrell page records here give her last name as Hockaday also. If this is correct, she was probably Margaret's sister, which was fairly common in those days.

They had the following children:

  M i Solomon TERRILL
  F ii Obedience "Biddy" TERRILL
  F iii Harriett TERRILL

Jepthah TERRILL [Parents] was born on 29 Oct 1733 in Caroline Co., VA. He died on 30 Oct 1810 in Granville Co., NC. Jepthah married Margaret HOCKADAY.

Jeptha TERRILL [Parents] was born about 1768. He married Nancy ALLEN.

Nancy ALLEN was born about 1774. She married Jeptha TERRILL.

Jepthah TERRILL [Parents] was born on 1 Sep 1769 in Harrison Co., (West) Virginia. He died on 27 Dec 1817 in Harrison Twp., Champaign Co., OH. Jepthah married Sarah BARNES about 1790.

The Jepthah Terrill here and the one who m. Nancy Allen may be the same individual. But, that is unlikely since that one was in NC and this one on Ohio. I received the below:

Compiler's note: There is a real question in my mind as to the marriage of Nancey Allen to Jephthah Terrell, Jr. According to the Berens reference, he married Sarah Barnes, who was the mother of his
children. If the dates of birth for his children given by Berens (all 1807 or before) are correct, then Sarah Barnes was his first wife. As of this date, October 1996, we are showing her as his first wife, and
Nancey Allen as his second wife. Both are subject to correction upon further research.

Another source gives these children (without dates or spouses) to wife Nancy: Lenezen Harriet; Emily Micolister; Betty Mariah; Polly Jackson (all females).

Notes for JEPHTHAE TERREL:

Descendant Erma Vail, writes "The first time we find mention of the Terrells in Harrison County, (West) Virginia is in 1797. We find Matthew Therrill and Jepthew Tirril !! In 1798 - Jephthah Terril. In 1799 - Matthew Terril and Jepthah Terrel. From then until 1814 - loads of Terrells. 1815 on - nothing!!!

FROM HISTORY OF CHAMPAIGN COUNTY, OHIO, 1881:

"At another time, a party of rangers stopped at the house of Jeptha Terrell. In the evening, the fired off their guns, simultaneously. The neighbors feared that Indians had made an attack on the Terrells, and were much alarmed. Fortunately, their worst fears were not realized, and the mystery was explained on the succeeding day."

The Champaign County history and records mention primarily only Jeptha Terrell and his family; however, it is evident that at least two other Terrell families were there, and they may have be brothers or some other relation to Jeptha. We will assume here that the other two Terrells were brothers. It seems as if the Terrells moved back and forth between Champaign County and next door Logan County as records can be found for some in both places.

They had the following children:

M ix Enoch TERRILL was born in 1807 in Virginia. He died on 29 Apr 1845.

Jacob BLEDSOE was born about 1725. He married Loruhamah "Hannah" TERRILL.

Loruhamah "Hannah" TERRILL [Parents] was born on 18 Jan 1731 in Caroline Co., VA. She died on 1 Nov 1810 in Wake Co., NC. Loruhamah married Jacob BLEDSOE.

BIO: On July 7, 1764, Loruhamah Terrell, "Reputed Child", received a
gift of slaves from her father, John Terrell. The gift was recorded
at the August Court 1764. In the above mentioned deed, John Terrell
named his daughter, Lo Hamar, as the wife of Jacob Bledsoe.

The death notice of Mrs. Hamar Bledsoe appeared in the Raleigh, NC
Star of 8 Nov 1810 and stated that she was of Wake County, died 1 Nov.
1810 aged about 80 years, a sister of Jeptha Terrell.

She was listed in John Terrell's will dated 20 September 1783 as
his daughter and given four Negro Slaves.

Mrs. Hamor Bledsoe was listed as the sister of Jepthah Terrell,
who died October 30, 1810 at the age of 77. (DAR Magazine Jan-Dec
1933, page 121)

William MARTIN was born in 1732. He married Anna TERRILL.

Anna TERRILL [Parents] was born on 10 Jul 1739 in Caroline Co., VA. She married William MARTIN.

BIO: Ann Terrell, "Reputed Child", received a gift of slave(s) from her father, John Terrell, on July 7, 1764, recorded August Court 1764.
She married William Martin.

The approximate date of William Martin's birth can be calculated
from the following abstract taken from the cited reference:
3182. Martin: D. on the 12 ult., Mr. William Martin, aged 79, for
forty two years a citizen of Wake County. RM Fri 2 Aug 1811 3:4
____. . . . aged 84. . . . RaNCSw Fri 19 Jul 1811 115:4.

Apparently, the earlier notice must have shown his age incorrectly
(84 rather than 79 years.)

Apparently, Ann Terrell must have died prior to the date of
William Martin's Will, dated 10 May 1811, as she is not mentioned
therein.

A copy of William Martin's Will follows:
