Story* Notes on Jean Philippe Goujon
Jean Philippe's father, a close friend of Chevalier de Karrer, Commander of the Swiss Larren Regiment, availing himself of the privilege granted to sons of gentlemen engaged in the King's service, had Jean Philippe, at the age of five and a half, registered as a Cadet (person of gentle blood, who serves as a volunteer, in expectation of a promised commission) in the Rarrer Regiment. In November 1731 young Jean Phillipe embarked for Louisiana with the Karrer Regiment, in which he had become an officer, and arrived at last in New Orleans after a laborious and tempestuous voyage of nearly four months. He was stationed for two years at Pointe Coup6e, where he distinguished himself in several skirmishes against the Indians. In 1734 he was ordered to Mobile, where he made himself conspicuous by his duels, his gaiety, the sociability of his manners, his gailantries and his marauding excursions against the Indians, in which he displayed great daring. In 1736, at Tombecbe, he thwarted an uprising against BIENVILLE led by a Sergeant MONTFORT and arrested the sergeant. During Bienville's campaign against the Chickasaw Indians, at the Indian village of Ackia, in the Tombecbe area (Tombigbee, Alabama), Jean Philippe was wounded five times during the attack on 25 May 1736, was rescued as a party of Indians was preparing to sally out to scalp him, and received a sixth wound as he was being carried away on the shoulders of a grenadier named REGNISSE. It was three years before Jean Philippe was sufficiently recovered to resume active service. The Minister of the Colonial Department, on being informed of Jean Philippe's bravery in the Chickasaw campaign, sent him a gratuity of 600 livres and a promise of the Cross of St. Louis.

In 1741 Jean Philippe married. From 1741 to 1750 he was employed in several military expeditions and diplomatic negotiations with the Indians, in which he acquitted himself with great credit to himself and to the satisfaction of the Chiefs. In 1750 he became a Captain in the Swiss Grenadiers. In 1753 he was rewarded for his services by being decorated with the Cross of St. Louis. Shortly after, happening to be at Dauphine Island when a Spanish vessel was wrecked in a storm and went to pieces on the coast, Jean Philippe, being an expert swimmer, saved several of the victims. n 1758 he returned to New Orleans from Mobile, and having been enriched by a heritage which befell his wife, he became a large planter and the master of 150 negroes.

In 1759 Jean Philippe became embroiled in a quarrel with Governor KERLEREC, who accused him of insubordination and of several other offenses, for which he was thrown into prison, where he remained three years. In August 1762 he was put by the Governor on board a vessel, in company with Intendant ROCHEMORE and several other officers, whom the Governor charged with being in a scheme of insurrection, and who were sent to France for trial. In the Gulf of Mexico they were chased by an English frigate but escaped. The next day, at the entrance to the Bahama Channel, they met an English privateer. The weaker French vessel tried unsuccessfully to avoid her antagonist, and the French officers wanted to surrender without a fight, but Jean Philippe persuaded them otherwise. He took command of the quarter-deck and the engagement soon began. The British ship became so crippled that she was obliged to drop away and shrink from the contest. A few days later, Jean Philippe who, by tacit consent, had taken military command of the French vessel, attacked a large English merchantman and took possession of it. However, after receiving needed provisions from the English ship and payment of forty thousand crowns he let the English ship go. After been at sea 94 days, constantly beaten by storms, the French ship was driven into the port of La Coru;a, Spain, on 1 November 1762. After having rested three weeks in that city, Jean Philippe departed with seven or eight of his companions to go by land to Bordeaux. Intendant Rochemore, with the rest of the passengers, re-embarked on their ship, which had been repaired.

At Bordeaux, the celebrated Duc de RICHELIEU treated Jean Philippe with the most gracious affability. From Bo rdeaux, Jean Philippe went to Rochefort to visit the staff officers of his regiment, which had been recalled to France. On 17 January 1763 he arrived in Paris. The next day he presented his respects to the Count of HALLWILL, his late Colonel, recently promoted to the rank of General, and to whom he complained of the persecution of which he was the object from the Governor of Louisiana. General Hallwill took him under his protection and brought him to Versailles, where he presented him to the Minister, the Duc de CHOISEUL, who promised him promotion if, on his trial, he was found innocent of the charges preferred against him. Governor KERLEREC had also been summoned to France, to make good the very grave accusations he had brought against Intendant ROCHEMORE and so many officers. Kerlerec was a kinsman of Marshall DIESTREES and, making use of the influence of this nobleman at Court, obtained an order of arrest (lettre de cachet) against Jean Philippe, who, on 9 April 1765, was carried to the Bastille and whose papers were seized at his residence and put under seal. On the tenth day of his incarceration Jean Philippe was interrogated by M. de SARTINES, the Minister of Police, on whom he produced so favorable an impression that a few days later he was set at liberty. He immediately left Paris in the company of the Duc d'AIGUILLON to go to Port Louis to see his father, who was still living. After having remained eighteen days with his father, he returned to Paris to sue for justice in his conflict with the Governor of Louisiana. On 11 August 1769, after long delays, a judgment was rendered in his favor, and soon after he was ap.pointed Lieutenant-Colonel, with a gratuity of 2500 livres and an annual pension of 1800 livres. He also received a letter from the Minister of Marine, Duc de PRASLIN, informing him that these rewards were a testimonial of the high esteem which the King had of his services.

Meanwhile, Louisiana having been ceded to Spain, Jean Philippe gave up all thoughts of returning to Louisiana, and was appointed on 30 December 1772 to the command of the city of Lorient. Pursuant to his instructions, Jean Philippe's wife sold all their property in Louisiana and joined him in 1776 with their children, except two daughters, who had married in the Colony. In 1788 he had risen to the grade of BrigadierGeneral. Shortly thereafter, owing to his advanced age, he ceased to be on active service and retired to Nemours. In 1792 he was denounced as an aristocrat and thrown into prison, but after an imprisonment of eight days he was released. Soon after, on 29 April 1792, he was unanimously elected by the inhabitants of Nemours as commanding general of the national guards of that city and he discharged the duties of this position until 1 September 1793. In 1796, overwhelmed with grief at the horrors which had swept over France during the French Revolution, he left Nemours and retired to Salins, near Montereau. He was an enthusiastic admirer of Napoleon BONAPARTE on his accession to power and had the honor of being presented to the Emperor as the oldest living person in the French military (he was then in his eighties). Jean Philippe was made a Chevalier de la Legion d'Honneur in 1805. He continued to live at Salins until his death at the ripe old age of 105. Jean Philippe and Marguerite Marie Louise are believed to have had five children.
