The first Robichaud in Acadia
(and in North America)

Who was the first Robichaud in Acadia (and thus in North America) ? It was most probably Étienne, born around 1635, and arrived in Acadia around 1660. We should probably forget about Louis Robichaud, born around 1609. Why ? Firstly because there is absolutely no evidence of the existence of a Louis Robichaud who would have come to Acadia around 1642. This whole story goes back to Placide Gaudet who wrote, early this century, that the first Robichaud in Acadia was named Louis, was born in 1609 and came to Acadia around 1642. He would have had two sons, Charles and Étienne and would have died in Québec in 1649. All of this from one document: a death certificate, in Québec City, dated the 4th of January 1649. Most genealogist have since then assumed the existence of that Louis Robichaud.
Several years ago, I noticed that the "Répertoire des actes de baptême, mariage, sépulture et des recensements du Québec ancien", published by the Laval University had transcribed the death certificate as referring to a Louis Rebicher. This was published in December 1994 in the bulletin of the Société Historique Nicolas-Denys. A bit later, Stephen White, of the Centre d'Études Acadiennes of the Université de Moncton made the same discovery and concluded that there exist no proven relation between Louis Rebicher and Étienne Robichaud.

Our common ancestor would therefore be Étienne Robichaud. We do not know very much about him. On the 1671 Port-Royal census, it says:
Laboureur: Étienne Robichaut ne ma pas voulu voir. Il a sorty de chex lui et a dit a sa femme quel me dit qu'il ne vouloit point donner le conte de ses bestiaux et terres.

(Husbandman: Étienne Robichaud did not want to see me. He came out of his house and told his wife to tell me that he dit not want to give me an account of his animals and lands)

We also know that Étienne was married to Françoise Boudrot, daughter of Michel Boudrot and Michelle Aucoin and that Françoise was born in Acadia around 1642. The second census taken in Port-Royal, in 1678, tells us that their eldest child is then 15 years old, therefore born in 1663. We can therefore suppose that Étienne and Françoise were married around 1662 (Françoise would have been 20 years old) and that Étienne was born between 1635 and 1640. We also know from the 1704 census that Françoise was then a widow. Our common ancestor had passed away.

Story* Notes on: Michel (Gereyt) de Forest

(RN=1156) (CBE.158) (Apr 89) Gereyt probably came to America to claim his grandfather's
inheritance in the New Netherlands (Now New York). However, Gereyt must have arrived about 1657
when the Dutch colony fell to the English. He was eventually recruited by Sir Thomas Temple
to assist in the English settlement of the recently captured Acadia. About 1666, at Port Royal,
he married Marie Hebert. At that time he abandoned the Protestant faith to become a Catholic
and seems to have adopted the name Michel. He obtained a large concession, extending over a
mile in depth, about ten miles east of the fort of Port Royal. The 1671 census lists him with
wife and three sons, having 2 arpents of plowed land, 12 head of cattle and 2 sheep. The 1678
census lists him as a widower, with four sons, two daughters, 4 arpents of land, 3 cows,
2 calves and one gun. The 1686 census lists him with his second wife, Jacqueline.
Only one child is known to have been born to Michel and Jacqueline.

Story* Notes on: Daniel LeBlanc

(RN=1158). Voir Aussi: LeBlanc ditJasmin. Originally from Martaize, dept. de la Vienne, France.
(CBL.284) Daniel, a laborer, was recruited from the lands of the Seigneury of Aulnay as a
colonist for Acadie where he arrived about 1650. He established himself on the north shore of
the Riviere Francaise (Port Royal River, now Annapolis River), to the northeast of the Belisle
marsh, about nine miles above Port Royal four and a half mile below St. Laurent chapel.
In the 1671 census he is listed as a 45 year old plowman having ten arpents of land in two
locations. Daniel was a leading inhabitant of Port Royal, and when, on 24 May 1690, Sir William
Phipps, who had just seized the place, demanded of the inhabitants of Port Royal and along the
Port Royal River that they choose six persons among themselves to form a council in order to
keep the peace and administer justice, Daniel was one of those chosen.
Daniel and Francoise had seven children, all born at Port Royal.
