      Pg.618-23: Holmes Co. JOHN DUNCAN (deceased) b. March 7, 1804, in Washington Co. PA, where he remained until 1824, when he came to Steubenville, Jefferson Co. OH, and engaged with a Mr. Plumer as a laborer. About 1826 took flat-boat of flour to New Orleans, forwarded it to Mexico to sell, returned mostly on foot. Became apprentice to Plummer to learn fulling & carding industry to 1830. Then to Holmes Co.; his brother William Duncan had come first; they bought farm in Mechanic Twp. & built fulling & carding mill; William kept it. John to Coshocton Co., built saw-mill etc. on Doughty's Fork; 1851 to Holmes Co.; retired 1874, d. July 12, 1878, in Killbuck. (MAD: John Duncan was son of Andrew Duncan who died 1817 Jefferson Co. OH)
      John's father (unnamed) was native of Scotland, to Washington Co. PA while young man, there married Jane Wiley, sister of Dr. Wiley of Washington Co. PA University, and settled there. Children: Adam, John, William, Elisa, Isabella, Mary and Hester; John's father d. 1817 when eldest child Adam was 15. Adam m. Jennie Milligen & located in Guernsey Co.; William m. Fanny Elliott; Elisa m. George Gray; Mary m. Edward Stevenson & located in Illinois; Hester m. Rev. James Eliott; Isabella m. John Eliott, all locating in Holmes Co. except Adam and Mary.       Pg.110-111: The CULBERTSON FAMILY. The first of the family in Harrison Co. who came to America was Robert Culbertson, native of Ireland, where he married; his wife died there leaving four children, James, John, Samuel and Ezekiel, all now deceased, all of whom came with their father in 1811 to OH where settled one mile northeast of New Athens, now Harrison Co. By his second wife, whom he married in Ireland, Robert Culbertson had ten children, viz: Thomas, Robert, Benjamin, William, Hugh and Joseph, all deceased, and George in Muskingum Co. OH, Annie widow of Thomas Pollock living in Guernsey Co. OH, Mary who died when 8 years old, and Gillespie in New Athens, Harrison Co. The father died age 87 years, buried on Christmas day 1840, a stonemason in Ireland and farmer in OH, member Seceder Church; his widow survived him some time, dying at age 67. Gillespie Culbertson, son of Robert, was born in Oct. 1816 in Athens Twp, Harrison Co. OH, on Dec. 17, 1840, married Miss Dorcas Holt of Guernsey Co. OH, and had four children: John, living on old Robert Webb Farm; Mary, decd. wife of Jeremiah Brown of Monroe Twp, Harrison Co.; Sarah Ann, wife of F.M. Cooper living in New Athens, Harrison Co.; and Robert Holt who died when age 17. The mother died Aug. 15, 1865, age 46 years, the father mar. Nov. 8, 1866, as his second wife, Eliza J., dau. of James and Elizabeth (McKinney) Duncan, and a native of Guernsey Co. OH where her parents died, the father in 1835 and the mother in 1861. By this union one child was born, Dorcas Eliza, now the wife of Samuel A. Kirkland. Mr. & Mrs. Culbertson remained on the farm where he had lived for 73 years, until Oct. 1889 when they moved into New Athens ... Gillespie Culbertson died Sept. 11, 1890.       Pg.709-10: J.C. DUNCAN, well-known resident of Elm Grove, Ohio Co. WV, engaged in well drilling & pump business, which he has followed for many years. Lifelong Republican, elected JP, and in Jan. 1900 was elected to the town council and served on the committee on streets and alleys. He was born in Marshall Co. WV on October 11?, 1846, and is a son of Robert Duncan. John Duncan, grandfather of J.C., was born in OH of Scotch ancestry and was one of the noted Presbyterians of his day; he lived to reach the advanced age of 90 years. Robert Duncan, father of J.C., was born at Fairview [Guernsey Co.], OH, and learned the trade of a tailer which he followed until his death at the early age of 30 years. J.C. Duncan attended the subscription schools ... and was nine years of age when his father died, and he was obliged to partially support himself. He remained with his mother and at the age of 19 years took charge of the old farm and his mother's interests, there being three sisters to rear and educate. In 1883 he moved to Elm Grove, Ohio Co. WV and conducted a general store ... well-drilling & pump business under the firm name of Woods, Duncan & Atkinson?. In 1872 Mr. Duncan was united in marriage with Ellen J?. Kimmins, a daughter of William and Jane (Little) Kimmins. Her father was a farmer ... lived to age 70 years. Her grandfather Samuel Kimmins was born in Ohio, died age 85. Mrs. Jane (Little) Kimmins, mother of Mrs. Duncan, native PA, died age 70 years. Three children: Wilbert T. born 1873 a painter by trade & town recorder for 4 years; Elbridge Roy b. 25 Feb. 1890, and Lurline B., born Dec. 27, 1891.

      Pg.834-835: JOHN W. DUNCAN is descended from a family of Scotch-Irish ancestry. His grandfather, Adam W. Duncan, was a farmer in Guernsey County, Ohio. John and Andrew, his sons who still survive, are residents of Guernsey County. Robert M. Duncan, the father of John W., was born in Londonderry, Guernsey County, Ohio, and was a blacksmith by trade; he was also interested in agricultural pursuits. He married Mary A. Alexander, a daughter of John Alexander, and they were the parents of four children: Jennie, Elizabeth, John W., and Robert Alexander, the youngest son. Mr. Duncan came to Iowa a few years after his marriage, and in 1858 he settled in Page County and began farming in Tarkio Township. He was a soldier in the civil war, and was killed at Vicksburg by the bursting of a shell before the siege began. His widow survived until February 27, 1879. They were both members of the United Presbyterian Church, and were honorable, industrious people.
            John W. Duncan, the subject of this brief biography, was born in Page County, Iowa August 6, 1860, and was but two and a half years old at the time of his father's death. ... In 1869 his mother was married a second time to John T. Duncan, a native of Indiana County, Pennsylvania. (MAD: originally spelled "Pennsyvania.") He was also a soldier in the civil war, and was a member of the company that captured John Morgan in Ohio. ... member of United Presbyterian Church. He died in 1885, at the age of seventy-eight years.
            In 1882 John W. Duncan was united in marriage to Miss Annie Berry, a daughter of George Berry of Amity Township (see sketch), and they have had born to them three children: George W., was born October 7, 1883; Robert L. was born August 12, 1885, and Agnes J. was born January 10, 1890. The parents are members of the United Presbyterian Church ...

      Death of Old Engineer.
      Mr. Thomas M. Duncan, one of the oldest engineers in the employ of the Baltimore & Ohio railroad, died yesterday in Baltimore. He was 79 years old and has been ill for a year.
      Born in Cambridge [Guernsey Co.], Ohio, Mr. Duncan went to Baltimore when a young man. Fifty-five years ago he entered the employe of the Northern Central railway as engineer. Several years later he became an engineer on the Baltimore & Ohio. He has the distinction of running the first train into Union station, Baltimore. During the many years that he ran trains he never had an accident. About ten years ago he retired from active service.
