Lillian Tharp Maxwell went to Missouri Valley College in Marshall,
MO. The picture was taken on Easter Sunday in 1893. She is on
the right. Missouri Valley was established as a seminary for Presbyterian
preachers and later branched out. In the early 1890's the dauthters
of Presbyterian ministers were admitted for the first time. These
were the first six graduating women. Grandmother Maxwell was
a talented artist and a few of her works hang in
descendants' homes. Here are
some examples of her work.
Nathaniel Chester Maxwell moved to Silverton from Missouri in 1903
to work as a bookkeeper in one of the mines. He was a college graduate. Over the years he had numerous positions in several
of the mines, wrote and edited for the newspapers and was the
county judge for many years.
