S. Laws was born in Tennessee in 1827. His parents emigrated to Kentucky in 1828, to Indiana in 1835, to Illinois in 1840. The Dr. graduated in Franklin College, in Tennessee in 1851, and in 1854 he graduated in the Eclectic Medical College in Cincinnati. He practiced medicine two years in Kentucky, then came to Kansas in 1856 and located in McCamish, and continued the practice of his profession. In 1862 he was elected Supt. of Public Instruction for Johnson County, resigned in 1863, and accepted a professorship in the Western Christian University, at Ottumwa, Kansas. In 1864 he returned to his farm near Lanesfield, and was appointed County Superintendent of Public Instruction. Afterwards was re-elected to the same office, and served to the close of the term in 1866. He was a member of the board of examiners of the county. The cultivation of the grape has received his attention. In 1871 he marketed about 10,000 pounds of grapes. Dr. Laws study exhibits some fine portrait paintings, produced by his own skill, showing that his attention has been given to the cultivation of the fine arts. In 1853 he was married to Miss S. W. Jones of Cincinnati. They have a family of six very interesting children. Dr. and Mrs. Laws are very much interested in educational matters, and friends to the elevation of the south of the county will find them every ready to aid and encourage such interests." Publishers, Wyandott, Kansas, 1874. page 65 ---------------------------------- According to family lore, the family came to California by covered wagon from Kansas and first settled for a short time in Escondido, CA, then moved to what is now the Whittier area of Los Angeles. ---------------------------------- "On Wednesday morning at 6:30, January 10, 1917, Dr. Ovid S. Laws at the ripe age of 89 years and 9 months breathed his last on earth, and as many Eclectics as could be notified attended his funeral on January 11 at 2 o-clock at the Christian Church on North Workman Street, Los Angeles, of which organization he had been a member and elder for the past 22 years, and was by the members held in very high esteem and who showed this esteem by crowding the church. The writer had known him intimately for twelve years and has greatly enjoyed his company and fellowship both as a Christian and Physician. He was a staunch Eclectic and thoroughly believed in the medicine he prescribed, working far more for the good of the people and the honor of the profession than for his own personal gains and so he left but little worldly goods to his family--three sons and daughters, who mourn the loss of a brilliant, loving father of whom they were justly proud, but appreciating that he sent on before him to that eternal home, where he now rests, riches that will be enduring as the everlasting ages. Dr. Laws was born in Eastern Tennessee, April 6, 1827. When 21 years old he entered the Franklin College of Nashville, graduating four years later, the following year he matriculated in the Cincinnati Eclectic Medical College. Graduating from that institution in the spring of 1854. In 1853 he married Susan Webb Jones. After graduating he moved to Kentucky and practiced there until 1856; from there he moved to Illinois, where he remained but a short time, from there he went to Jackson County, Kansas, where he practiced medicine as a country doctor, which entailed much hard work in all kinds of weather until 1891, when he came to Escondido, California, where he remained one year, then he made some unfortunate investments losing much of his hard earned money. He moved to Los Angeles in 1892. His wife died in 1903 while he lived on Daly Street. For the past eight years he has lived with his daughter, Mrs. King, on Baldwin Street, where he died surrounded by his devoted family of sons and daughters ministering to his every want. It would be difficult to find a man who has done as much hard work as Dr. Laws, notwithstanding his slight frame, for all these 62 years he practiced unceasingly to within a few months of his death, prescribing for patients, when he was too feeble to dispense the medicines his daughter, Mrs. King doing it at his direction. Notwithstanding his great age and physical feebleness, his mind remained clear to the very last, he was always ready and enjoyed the discussion of medicine and the Scriptures which he did with the writer on every visit. Many bright, thoughtful, practical articles came from his ready pen to the various journals to which he was a regular contributor for many years.
