OTHER INFORMATION
Portage County is located about 30 miles southeast of Cleveland. The county is an old Indian portage between the Cuyahoga and Tuscarawas Rivers.
The largest city in the county is Kent, home of Kent State University, which became a state university in 1935. Ravenna, named after an Italian city, is the county seat. In Hiram is Hiram College, called Western Reserve Eclectic Institute before 1867. James A. Garfield graduated from here.
