OTHER INFORMATION
Geauga County was formed in 1805 from the Old Western Reserve Tract. The name comes from an Indian word meaning "Raccoon."
In the beginning the hills and heavy forests hindered the development of large cities and industry. So the county remained agricultural. At one time there was about sixty creameries producing handmade cheese. Chardon is the county seat.
Geauga County is widely known for its production of maple syrup. At one time maple syrup was the leading industry in the county. Today other major industries include; machinery, rubber, printing and publishing, fabricated metal, food, carbon paper forms, electric meters, relay controls and dairy products.
