Thomas Duncan and His Descendants
 

Thomas Duncan, born 23 Aug. 1768 NC (notebook); married Mary "Polly" Lynch on 21 April 1790 in Washington Co. TN; died 1832 White Co. TN intestate (White Co. TN Will Book B, pg. 100, 103, 116, 183). He was in Washington Co. TN 1790-1795 (tax list) and Carter Co. TN 1798 (tax list); probably in Buncombe Co. NC 1810 (pg. 85). He lived in White Co. TN in 1818 when he sold land in Greenville Co. SC (Greenville Co. SC Deed Book P, pg. 295; White Co. TN 1818 tax list); he bought land in White Co. TN on the road from Carthage to Sparta in 1825 (White Co. TN Deed Book G, pg. 526); and was in White Co. TN in 1830 (pg. 22). On 21 Jan. 1825, Thomas Duncan and Henry Atkinson posted bond for Reuben Harris Sr., Reuben Harris Jr., and Wooten Harris, to appear in court because of an affray (White Co. TN Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1824-27, pg. 153). In 1832, the year he died, he was taxed on 521 acres in White Co. TN. He may have operated a saw mill or lumber outlet, since the inventory of his estate contained accounts owed to him for various amounts of different kinds of lumber, including "823 feet of (unreadable) plank, 405 feet of weather boarding, 40 feet of flooring inch and one quarter plank." His estate was administered by his sons William (2.) and George W. Duncan (8.); by April 1835, William Duncan was recorded as the "active administrator" (White Co. TN Will Book B, pg. 183).

Mary Lynch was born 17 Oct. 1773 (notebook); after Thomas died, she went to McDonough Co. IL about 1836 with several of her children. She married 2nd Reuben Harris Sr. on 14 Jan. 1838 in McDonough Co. IL. She may have died in 1857, age 84, in Hancock Co. IL ("Descendants of John and Rachel Lynch Bennett" by C.W. Bennett, Macomb, IL 1949). However, she may have died before Reuben Harris Sr., since she did not relinquish her right to administer his estate.

Reuben Harris Sr. was the father of Nancy Harris who married Mary's son Joseph (7.). Reuben was born 22 March 1771, died 29 May 1845 McDonough Co. IL, and is buried in the Liberty Cemetery, Blandinsville Twp., McDonough Co. IL. Beside his grave is another with a broken stone. Reuben Harris Sr. was in Schuyler Co. IL in 1830 (pg. 96) in the area that was McDonough Co.; and in McDonough Co. IL in 1840 (pg. 224). In 1845 his heirs were James Harris, Zachariah and Elizabeth Kirkland, Stephen and Catharine Dill; Joseph Duncan; Isaac Harris, James and Sarah Haley, and Reuben Harris (McDonough Co. IL Probate File #433).

The dates of birth of Thomas and Mary, the names of their children, the date of birth of William (2.), the names of his children, the date of birth of William E. (2.1.) and the names of his children are from the notebook of William E. Duncan (2.1.) and the notes of Mrs. Linnie Wright Barrett, from Mrs. Julia Hoyt. The original "notebook of William E. Duncan" (2.1.) was in the possession of Ralph L. Duncan of La Harpe, IL, who died in 1988 (see 2.1.2.), but was copied by Mr. Denis W. Sherman of CA (address not included here) (see Appendix). Children of Thomas and Mary (Lynch) Duncan:

1.  Elizabeth Duncan, born 26 Feb. 1791 (notebook). No later information.

2.  William Duncan, born 17 Feb. 1794 TN; married Susannah -------- about 1821; died intestate on 20 Feb. 1836 (notebook; White Co. TN Will Book B., pg. 223); his estate included notes due from many of his brothers and sisters, possibly from their purchase of items at his father's estate sale. Susannah was born 1 May 1803 (notebook) in TN; married 2nd John Massa on 29 Jan. 1853 in White Co. TN. John Massa or Massey was born 1808 TN, the son of John Massa Sr. (White Co. TN Deed Book L, pg. 106, 107, 108). William Duncan had land on Glade Creek in White Co. TN in 1825 (White Co. TN Deed Book H, pg. 27; Book L, pg. 106); the family has not been located on the census in 1830. His widow Susannah Duncan was in White Co. TN in 1840 ("Sanna" pg. 28) and 1850 (pg. 186); John Massa and Susanna were there in 1860 (pg. 138).

      On 3 Sept. 1838 Susannah was appointed guardian to Polly, Jerusha, John T., James W., and Tilman C. Duncan, minor heirs of William Duncan, security posted by George W. Potts and Pleasant Farley (White Co. TN Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1835-41, pg. 253). On 2 Sept. 1856, John Massa stated to the court that Andrew Rurk? Duncan and Granderson Duncan were his and Susannah Duncan's sons, born out of wedlock, but that since their birth, he and Susannah had been married; the names were changed to Granderson Massa and Andrew Rurk? Massa (White Co. TN Minute Book 1853-1858, pg. 349). Children:

      2.1.  William E. Duncan, born 3 Nov. 1822 (notebook) White Co. TN; married 1st Mrs. Elizabeth (Hawks) Browning (4.2.) on 24 Aug. 1848 in Hancock Co. IL; married 2nd Mrs. Amelia (Browning) Bascow (4.2.1.) on 20 Oct. 1882 (notebook); died 28 Dec. 1890 (notebook) in Birmingham, Schuyler Co. IL (data of Denis Sherman). He was in Hancock Co. IL in 1850 (pg. 426 and pg. 438) and in Henderson Co. IL in 1860 (pg. 484). (see Appendix) Children:

            2.1.2.  Charles Thomas Duncan, born 11 Nov. 1851 (notebook) IL; married Anna E. Burkhardt before 1895 (obit of son Ralph). His son Ralph Duncan who died 15 Dec. 1988 had the notebook of William E. Duncan (see Appendix).

            2.1.3.  Samuel Charter Duncan, born 14 April 1855 (notebook) IL; married Mrs. Elizabeth Fisher (b. 1863 McDonough Co. IL) on 7 Nov. 1894 in Hancock Co. IL; died 3 March 1939, Honnewell, MO (info of Denis Sherman).

            2.1.4.  Stephen Huston Duncan, born 7 July 1857 (notebook) IL; died 22 March 1886 (notebook) in Hancock Co. IL at the residence of his cousin James Duncan (8.3.) (Hancock Co. IL Death Record).

Lewis Howell bought 2/5 share of land in 1854 from John T. Duncan (2.6.) and William Dobbs and wife Mary (2.4.) (White Co. TN Deed Book S, pg. 272). The family was in White Co. TN 1850 (#1261) and 1860 (pg. 137). Children from census:

In 1854 he sold his 1/5 share of land along with William Dobbs and wife Mary (2.4.) to Lewis Howell (2.5.) (White Co. TN Deed Book S, pg. 272). The family was in White Co. TN in 1860 (pg. 132); Nancy J. Albert b. 1835 was in their household. Martha was in White Co. TN in 1870 (pg. 368). Martha C. Dunkin, widow of John Thomas Duncan, drew a pension as the widow of a confederate soldier; he enlisted 9 Dec. 1861 ("Index to TN Confederate Pension Applications"; Confederate Civil War Record). IL; married 2nd Nancy Jane Tollent (b. 1844) on 17 April 1862 in White Co. TN; died 23 Sept. 1915. Catherine was the daughter of Bennett Blankenship. Tilmon was in White Co. TN 1860 without a wife, in his mother's household (pg. 138); he was in Red River Twp., Searcy Co. AR in 1910 (#180) with his son John (2.8.7.); was a Confederate Soldier (data of James A. Duncan). One John Blankenship was in Greenville Co. SC in 1808 (Greenville Co. SC Deed Book H, pg. 149). Middle name "Cantrell" was given on the family group sheet for son William Henry Duncan (2.8.5.) filed with the LDS church. Children (data from James A.             2.8.5.  William Henry Duncan, born 20 Nov. 1869 in White or Putnam Co. TN, son of William Cantrell Duncan and Jane Talent; married Sarah Ruth Lee on 3 Sept. 1886; died 17 Sept. 1925 Hayburn, Minidoka Co. ID. Sarah was born 20 Sept. 1868 Putnam Co. TN, daughter of Joseph Richard and Margaret Helen G. Lee; died 23 July 1947 Rupert, Minidoka Co. ID (Family Group Sheet filed with the LDS church).

            2.8.6.  Mary S. Duncan, born 1870 Putnam Co. TN.

            2.8.7.  John T. Duncan, born 1872 Putnam Co. TN; married in 1889 to Mary --------, born 1856 TN (1910 census, married 21 years, 6 children, 2 living); in Red River Twp., Searcy Co. AR in 1910 (#181); his father lived with them.

            2.8.8.  George G. Duncan, born May 1874 Putnam Co. TN.

            2.8.9.  Sarah E. Duncan, born 1876 Putnam Co. TN.

      2.9.  Granderson P. Duncan, born 9 Feb. 1840 (notebook) TN, was the son of William's widow Susannah and John Massa; died 11 Nov. 1917 in Putnam Co. TN (data of Denis Sherman). Granderson P. Duncan lived with Susannah Duncan in White Co. TN in 1850 (pg. 186) and 1860 (pg. 138). He was a Civil War Veteran. His father John Massa was granted permission in 1856 to change his name to Granderson Massa (White Co. TN Minute Book 1853-1858, pg. 349) but he was listed as Granderson Duncan on the 1860 census.

      2.10.  Andrew R. (Rurk?) Duncan, born 4 April 1842 (notebook) TN, was the son of William's widow Susannah and John Massa. He lived with Susannah Duncan in White Co. TN in 1850 (pg. 186). His name was changed in 1856 to Andrew Massa on petition of his father John Massa (White Co. TN Minute Book 1853-1858, pg. 349). He was listed as A.R. Massey on the 1860 census with Susannah and John Massey (pg. 138).

3.  Samuel Duncan, born 11 June 1797 (notebook). One Samuel Duncan was on a jury in White Co. TN on 21 Oct. 1818 (White Co. TN Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1817-1819, pg. 255). No later information.

4.  Sarah Duncan, born 13 Nov. 1799 (notebook); married Archibald Hawks. Archibald was born 1790-1800; probably died 1835-40. Archibald Hawks was in White Co. TN 1827-1833 (tax lists) and in 1830 (pg. 5); Sarah Hawks was in Hancock Co. IL in 1840 (pg. 209). Archibald had at least five daughters and three sons, probably including the following, but there is NO PROOF:

      4.1.  Nairy Hawks; married Coby Young on 15 Oct. 1838 in McDonough Co. IL.

      4.2.  Elizabeth Hawks, born 4 May 1824 (notebook) TN; married 1st Samuel Browning on 25 Dec. 1839 in Hancock Co. IL; married 2nd William E. Duncan (2.1.) on 24 Aug. 1848 in Hancock Co.             4.2.2.  Henry Clay Browning, born May 31, 1843 (notebook) or 1845 (census) in IL; died 22 July 1904 (notebook). He was in Henderson Co. IL in 1860 (pg. 484) with his step-father and mother.

      4.3.  Joseph Hawks, born 1835 TN; lived with Andrew and Polly (Marlow) Smiddy in Hancock Co. IL 1850 (pg. 429).

5.  Rachel Duncan, born Feb. 1803 (notebook) NC; married Joseph Atwater on 1 Jan. 1823 in White Co. TN ("David Atwater History" by Edward Atwater, 1873); died 18 Oct. 1871 Hancock Co. IL. Joseph Atwater was born 22 Feb. 1796 New Haven, CT, the son of Joseph Atwater and Sarah Thomas; he died 1 Jan. 1875 Hancock Co. IL (Hancock Co. Probate File 117). ("Atwater History and Genealogy" by Chas. Nobert Atwater, 1956; "David Atwater History" by Edward Atwater, 1873; and data from Walt Atwater to Alice Duncan). The family was in White Co.       5.3.  James Atwater, born 16 April 1830 TN; married Ann -------- before 1857; died 3 April 1866. Ann was born 30 April 1830; she died 26 March 1904. Both are buried in the Bedford Cemetery, Blandinsville Twp., McDonough Co. IL.

      5.4.  Sarah A. Atwater, born 1 Feb. 1832 TN; died as a child.

      5.5.  William E. Atwater, born 8 July 1833 TN; married Lucreta P. Timmons before 1862; died 1878-80. Lucreta was in Durham Twp., Hancock Co. IL in 1880 (pg. 3) with children:

            5.5.2.  Ruby Atwater, born 1866 IL.

            5.5.3.  Lusina Atwater, born 1869 IL.

      5.6.  Mary Atwater, born 29 Jan. 1836 TN; married Cosby Duncan (7.3.) on 20 April 1852; died 1931, buried Raton, NM (data of Alice Duncan). Mary lived with her parents in Hancock Co. IL in 1850 (pg. 438). Descendants of Cosby Duncan have the tradition that the marriage took place on 20 April 1852 in McDonough Co. IL, but no marriage record has been found there. See Cosby Duncan (7.3.) for more.

      5.7.  Sarah J. Atwater, born 13 March 1839 IL; died before 1873.

      5.8.  Lorraine "Lorena" or "Lorana" Atwater, born 3 Sept. 1841 IL; married William Duncan (7.6.) on 3 Dec. 1860 in Hancock Co. IL; died 26 Feb. 1866.

      5.9.  John Atwater, born 29 Sept. 1846 IL; married Mary Dunn about 1866; died 1937. Mary was born 1843; she died 1919. Both are buried in the La Harpe City Cemetery, Hancock Co. IL. They were in Durham Twp., Hancock Co. IL in 1880 (pg. 3) with children:

            5.9.2.  Durinda Atwater, a daughter, born 1869 IL.

6.  John Duncan, born 21 Sept. 1805 (notebook); married Mrs. Susannah (Pertle) Hooper on 23 Aug. 1839 in White Co. TN; died before 29 April 1840, probably White Co. TN (White Co. TN Deed Book M. pg. 1). Susanah was born 1806 TN, the daughter of George Pertle (White Co. TN Will Book B, pg. 410; Deed Book N, pg. 424) and widow of Edward E. Hooper (White Co. TN Will Book B, pg. 428); she was in White Co. TN 1840 (pg. 23) and 1850 (pg. 126). By her previous marriage, she had children Caroline Hooper b. 1829 TN and David Hooper b. 1834 TN (census). There was no indication that John Duncan had children.

      --   One Susannah Duncan married Thomas Jones Sr. on 2 Jan. 1858 in White Co. TN, but there is NO PROOF this was the same Susannah.

      --   One John Duncan was a defendant in a bastardy case in White Co. TN on 27 Sept. 1826 (White Co. TN Court of Pleas and Quarter Sessions 1824-27, pg. 432), continued to April 1827; this could be John Duncan (Sec. I, 8.5.1.), son of Joel Duncan.

7.  Joseph Duncan, born 11 May 1807 (notebook) NC; married Nancy Harris about 1827 in White Co. TN; died 1881 ("Descendants of Charles and Mary Lynch Duncan" by Mrs. G. Severns; from Goldie Swain to Alice Duncan). Nancy was born 1810-15, the daughter of Reuben Harris Sr. who married Joseph's mother Mary; she died 1844-45 McDonough Co. IL ("History of Dragoo, Speer, Duncan, Woodside Families" by Alice Young Duncan, 1972). Joseph moved to Schuyler Co. IL about 1829; probably lived with Reuben Harris Sr. in Twp. 7N Range 4W Schuyler Co. IL in 1830 (pg. 96); in McDonough Co. IL 1840 (pg. 224) and 1850 (pg. 250); in Fountain Green Twp. Hancock Co.       7.2.  Thomas Duncan, born 1828 TN; married Susan Marlow (b. 1825-27); died 1888 ("Descendants of Charles and Mary Lynch Duncan" by Mrs. G. Severns; from Goldie Swain to Alice Duncan). According to a descendant, Cosby married Mary Atwater on 20 April 1852 in McDonough Co. IL; however no marriage record was found there. One Clausby Duncan married Mary Stewart on 23 April 1852 in Clark Co. MO, according to a list of marriages extracted from Clark Co. MO Marriage Book A, 1837-1854, published in "MO Pioneers" Vol. 6, Dec. 1969. Clark Co. MO is across the Mississippi River from Hancock Co. IL; since this marriage is within three days of that given for Cosby Duncan to Mary Atwater, and since there is no Cosby or Clausby Duncan in the 1850 census for Clark Co. MO, and since no marriage was found for this couple in McDonough Co. IL, which borders Hancock Co. IL, it is possible that Mary's last name may have been misread by the original copiest as "Stewart" instead of "Atwater". The original Clark Co. MO marriage records have not been consulted.

                  Cosby was in McDonough Co. IL in 1850 (pg. 496), age 21, in a household next to Joseph Duncan (7.); in Fountain Green Twp., Hancock Co. Isaac was born 25 May 1808 TN (census), the son of John Bennett and Rachel Lynch and a nephew of Thomas Duncan and Mary Lynch; Isaac died 8 Feb. 1873 in La Harpe, Hancock Co. IL ("Descendants of John and Rachel Lynch Bennett" by C.W. Bennett, Macomb, IL, 1949). Mary and Isaac are buried in the Glade City Cemetery, Blandinsville, McDonough Co. IL; Mary died 25 "Mr." 1876 aged 61? years 5? months ? days; Isaac died 8 Feb. 1873, aged 64 years 8 months 14 days. The family was in Fountain Green Twp., Hancock Co. IL in 1840 (pg. 208) and 1850 (pg. 426); he was in Hancock Co. IL in 1870 (pg. 37).

      "Descendants of John and Rachel Lynch Bennett" by C.W. Bennett, 1954, said that Isaac's wife was Mary Duncan, and her parents were Charles and Mary Lynch Duncan.

      The biography of John L. Bennett (9.1.) in the 1892 "Biographical Review of Cass, Schuyler, and Brown Counties (IL)", Schuyler Co., pg. 238-39, stated that Isaac Bennett married Mary Lynch on 8 April 1834 in White Co. TN; that Mary was the daughter of Charles and Mary Lynch who were farmers and reared eight children, the father dying in TN age 45 and the mother in Hancock Co. IL age 84; that Isaac Bennett's father died in KY in 1831 and his mother in Hancock Co. IL age 80; that Isaac's mother had come to IL in 1834 and Isaac had come with her. Isaac and Mary Bennett had 11 children.

      There was no Charles Lynch in White Co. TN nor a Charles Duncan old enough to have been Mary's father; but both Isaac Bennett and his mother Rachel were purchasers of items from Thomas Duncan's estate in White Co. TN.

      Were Charles and Mary Lynch the parents of Mary Lynch (b. 1773) who married Thomas Duncan, and Rachel Lynch (b. 1781 VA) who married John Bennett? Rachel (Lynch) Bennett was in McDonough Co. IL in 1850 (pg. 259, #423) with her son David Bennett born 1823 TN.

Phebe Ann was born 1840 IN, the daughter of Thomas O'Conner and Elvisia Hutchinson; and sister of Lydia O'Conner who married James Moore who married 2nd Elizabeth Duncan (7.7.); and sister of Wales O'Conner who married Jane Duncan (7.10.). Phebe O'Conner eloped age 14 to Kahoka, MO, to marry Thomas Duncan Bennett; she died 9 March 1927 in Urbana, IL.

                  Phebe's father Thomas O'Conner died about 1859, and his widow Elvisia married 2nd David Bennett on 29 July 1860; David was probably the brother of Isaac Bennett who married Mary Duncan (9.) (from Alice Duncan). David Bennett was in Nemaha Co. NE in 1870 (pg. 19, #148-14, Peru Precinct, from Alice Duncan), age 43, with no wife, in the household of L.W. O'Conner (7.10.).

                  Thomas Duncan Bennett and Phebe had 10 children; 3 survived infancy.       9.8.  Jeremiah Bennett, born 4 Nov. 1848 IL; married Melvina Hungate on 7 Oct. 1869 in McDonough Co. IL; moved to Texas by 1892. Had at least 8 children ("Desc. of John and Rachel Lynch Bennett").

      9.9.  Sylphia E. Bennett, born 13 Aug. 1849 IL; died 16 Jan. 1862 ("Desc. of John and Rachel Lynch Bennett"); "Zylpha" died age 14 (1892 "Biog. Review").

      9.10.  Minerva Bennett, born 20 Jan. 1851 IL; died 5 June 1851 ("Desc. of John and Rachel Lynch Bennett"; not in 1892 History).

      9.11.  Lucinda Bennett, born 12 June 1852 IL; married William Duncan (7.6.) about 1868; died 8 Feb. 1886; 5 children. ("Desc. of John and Rachel Lynch Bennett")

      9.12.  Phoebe Elvira Bennett, born 22 May 1854 IL; married 1st John Nelson who was killed Feb. 1870, had daughter Mary Jane Nelson ("Desc. of John and Rachel Lynch Bennett"); married 2nd James Knowles ("Dragoo"); married 3rd Nathaniel Duncan (7.2.4.) ("Desc. of John and Rachel Lynch Bennett"); died 19 July 1916; lived in St. Louis, MO, 1892; 2 children.

--   (Probably not related to Thomas Duncan) Washington P. Duncan, born 1797 VA (census); about 1821-22 married Lucy --------, born 1798 SC, probably the daughter of Pierce or Price and Susan Cody or Codd who was in Buncome Co. NC 1799-1806 (Buncome Co. NC Deed Book 10, pg. 174, 391; Book 7, pg. 648; White Co. TN Deed Book M, pg. 380). Washington P. Duncan was in White Co. TN in 1830 (pg. 15), 1840 (pg. 46), and 1850 (pg. 168); Lucy was there in 1860 (pg. 192). Letters of administration were issued 1 Nov. 1875 on his estate (White Co. TN Will Book F, pg. 386). He bought land near the head of Wild Cat Creek in 1825 (White Co. TN Deed Book G, pg. 486). In 1850, Susan Codd, born 1778 NC, lived in his household. His children from the White Co. TN 1850 census, marriage records, and will books, all born TN: Rebecca Duncan born 1824, Thomas W. Duncan born 1826 married Adeline Mitchell on 10 March 1852 and died 1865, John J. Duncan born 1828 married Susan Austin on 1 Nov. 1855, Susan Duncan born 1830, Price (Pierce) C. Duncan born 1833 and died 1863, Mary E. Duncan born 1834 married Milton Hickman 1870 (E.C. Duncan married Milton Hickman on 1 Nov. 1866), and James C. Duncan born 1838 and died 1863.
