Joseph Duncan the Elder and His Probable Descendants

Five men by the name of Anthony, Andrew, John, Joseph and James Duncan were in Eastern Tennessee before 1800. Anthony and Andrew Duncan had been in Montgomery Co. VA together. It is possible that all five men were brothers, but it is also possible that only some of them were related. A lot of information was given about some of the individual families in "John Duncan of Blount Co. TN and His Descendants" by John C. Crawford III, 1959; and in "The Duncan Family" by Daisy Duncan Harden and Walter G. Duncan, Chicago, IL, 1930, typewritten. The families will be listed here together as sons of Joseph Duncan, to help sort out some of the early Tennessee families, but there is NO PROOF if or how they are related. Little has been found about James Duncan, who is listed as the fifth son.

Joseph Duncan the Elder, son of -------- Duncan and Miss -------- Bruce, lived in Pennsylvania and/or Maryland (paper of Calvin A. Duncan (3.9.2.), from "John Duncan of Blount Co. TN and His Descendants" by John C. Crawford III, 1959). Joseph Duncan is referred to here as "the Elder" because he was the first of that name known in this country. Joseph was said to have married Miss -------- Burns, and to have had five children: Anthony, John, Joseph, Andrew, and a daughter who married John Allison. All four sons were reportedly soldiers of the Revolutionary War.

1.  Anthony Duncan, born 1743-44 Lancaster Co. PA; married, wife unknown; served in the Revolutionary War from Augusta Co. VA on the VA Line, applied for a pension on 25 Oct. 1832, age 88, in Greene Co. TN. He had served a year at Fort Dinwiddie; later was drafted and served 3 months under Col. Trigg and marched from Montgomery Co. VA. He had lived in Augusta Co. VA, then Montgomery Co. VA, then after the revolution had moved to Washington Co. TN, then to Greene Co. TN for 30 years; his file included testimony by Azariah Doty (see 2.10.). (Rev. Pen. S-1808) No record has yet been found of Anthony Duncan in Augusta Co. VA. However, see Andrew Duncan of Augusta Co. VA, after 1.7.

Anthony was in Montgomery Co. VA 1777-1782; he and Andrew (2.) gave their Oaths of Allegiance to John Montgomery on 6 Sept. 1777 (1776) in Montgomery Co. VA ("VA Military Records" Montgomery Co.'s Revolutionary Heritage, by Ruby Altizer Roberts, pg. 208); and Anthony was in Jeremiah Pearce's Company, over 18, on the list of 5 April 1781 ("Militia of Montgomery Co. VA 1777-1790" by Kegley). He was on the tax list of 1782 with 1 white pole, 4 horses, and 10 cattle, and land ("Montgomery Co. VA Tax List 1782" by Kegley; "1782-1787 VA Taxpayers" by Fothergill), as were Andrew (2.), James (5.), and John (3.?). In Montgomery Co. VA in 1782, Anthony Dunkin, assignee of Joseph Dunkin (4.), had a commissioner's certificate for a land entry of 200 acres on a branch of Reed Creek, settled 1770 ("Early Adventures on the Western Waters" by Kegley, Vol. II, pg. 30, 103).

Anthony Duncan bought 50 acres in Washington Co. TN in 1791 on the ridge between Limestone and Sinking Creeks (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 4, pg. 231) and sold it to George Jackson in 1794 when he lived in Greene Co. TN (Washington Co. TN Deed Book E, pg. 68). He owned another 152 acres at the head of Sinking Creek which he sold the same date to William Jackson (Washington Co. TN Deed Book E, pg. 88). He was taxed on 200 acres about 1790 (undated tax list). His land was very close to land owned by Joseph Duncan from 1790 to 1795 (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 3, pg. 172; Book 7, pg. 199, grant to and deed of William Carson). This is probably Joseph (4.) since it is unlikely his son, Joseph (1.2.) who married in 1802 would have owned land by 1790.

Anthony bought 171 acres on Lick Creek in Greene Co. TN in 1797 (Greene Co. TN Deed Book 6, pg. 243); he sold this land in 1836 to John McCollum (Deed Book 18, pg. 311). He lived with his son, Joseph Duncan (b. 1770-80) in Greene Co. TN 1830 (pg. 213). His will dated 20 Feb. 1839, proved 6 May 1839, named his daughters Sarah, Elizabeth, Mary White and husband Jacob White, Jane and Margaret. Mary White and her husband were to take care of Anthony for life. His son Joseph (1.2.) had already died in 1833. His children:

1.1.  Jane Duncan, married Mordecai Yarnel on 25 Nov. 1792 in Greene Co. TN, security Anthony Duncan.

--   One Robert Duncan, taylor, of the City of Philadelphia, made a will on 3 Sept. 1759, probated 6 Sept. 1759 in Philadelphia Co. PA (Will Book L, pg. 314, #199), in which he left his possessions to his sons Joseph and John Duncan when of age, and appointed Mordecai Yarnel of Philadelphia, merchant, his executor. There is NO PROOF of any connection other than similarity of the Yarnel name.

1.2.  Joseph Duncan, born 1770-80 (census); married Mary "Polly" Doty on 2 Dec. 1802 in Greene Co. TN, bondsman John H. Hughes. Mary was born 1784 TN (census); died 1881 (Greene Co. TN Will).

--   One Joseph Duncan fathered two children by Elizabeth Dodd, and posted bond on 27 April 1803, with Aaron Newman and John Smith his securities, for the maintenance of Robert Duncan age 1 year 10 months and Kinas Duncan age 3 weeks ("Greene Co. TN Minutes of the Court of Common Pleas 1797-1807" by Houston, pg. 134, minutes book pg. 37; from Evelyn Sigler). On 30 July 1807, John Dodd posted bond to maintain a child he fathered by Elizabeth Dodd, and on the same date John Dodd filed a complaint against Elizabeth Dodd for breach of the peace; Elizabeth was to pay $300 unless she was of good behavior for a year ("Greene Co. TN Minutes" pg. 335, minutes book pg. 250-252). There is no marriage recorded in Greene Co. TN for an Elizabeth Dodd. Aaron Newman, Joseph Duncan's security, married Elizabeth Duncan (1.7.) in 1802 in Greene Co. TN. One John Smith, perhaps Joseph Duncan's security, married Sarah Duncan (Sec. III, 1.3.) in 1798 in Greene Co. TN. One John Dodd was bondsman for the marriage of Joseph Duncan's sister Mary (1.4.) to Jacob White in 1802.

Joseph Duncan was in Greene Co. TN from 1805 to 1816 (tax lists); "Joshua" was in Greene Co. TN in 1830 (pg. 213), when his father lived with him. Joseph's will dated 18 Feb. 1833 named his wife Polly Dunken if living or his sisters (unnamed) or their legal heirs; Elizabeth McNeese, (1.6.) wife of Evan McNeese, was to be taken in with his sisters and considered the same; "my father, Anthony Dunken having contracted and agreed with me for a certain tract of land, which I now possess and live on, which my father by agreement made a will leaving me the land for his support; my wife Polly to take care of him; if she dies or remarries, the land to go to Joseph Smith, (1.3.1.) my sister's son and grandson of my father." Executors were his friends Samuel McNeese and Gravender McNeese; witnesses were Michael Bright Sr. and Jacob White (1.4.). The will was proved 22 April 1833 (Greene Co. TN Will Book 1828-1854, new pg. 393, copied from old pg. 111).

Polly Duncan was in Greene Co. TN 1840 (pg. 54), and Mary Duncan in 1850 (pg. 572). Polly Duncan had a grant of 25-1/2 acres of land in 1839 (TN Land Grant Index). Polly wrote her will 21 Oct. 1869, probated 4 April 1881 (Greene Co. TN) and left her plantation called Boo place and all her personal property to Alfred Duncan, a man of color, for supporting her; her will mentioned Joseph Duncan, deceased ("Greene Co. TN Wills and Administrations" from Evelyn Sigler).

1.3.  Sarah Duncan, married John Smith on 15 May 1798 in Greene Co. TN., bondsmen David Tate and George Parsons. Their son:

1.3.1.  Joseph Smith, mentioned in will of Joseph Duncan (1.2.) as "my sister's son, and grandson of my father."

--   One Joseph Smith married Dorethea Duncan, parents not identified, on 24 April 1823 in Greene Co. TN. It is not known if these two Joseph Smiths are the same man.

1.4.  Mary Duncan, married Jacob White on 2 April 1802 in Greene Co. TN, bondsman John Dodd. Jacob White witnessed the will of his brother-in-law Joseph Duncan (1.2.) in 1833.

1.5.  Margaret Duncan, married Joseph White on 29 May 1805 in Greene Co. TN, bondsman Joseph Duncan (1.2.).

1.6.  Elizabeth Duncan, possibly a daughter of Anthony Duncan by a second marriage; married Evan McNeese on 23 Feb. 1813 in Greene Co. TN. She was to be considered the same as a sister of Joseph Duncan (1.2.) in his will in 1833.

1.7.  One Elizabeth Duncan married Aaron Newman on 9 Feb. 1802 in Greene Co. TN, bondsman William Houston. Aaron Newman was bondsman for Joseph Duncan (1.2.?) who had a child by Elizabeth Dodd in 1801 and 1803 in Greene Co. TN. Aaron Newman was in Jefferson Co. TN in 1830 (pg. 321), age 50 to 60, with a female 70 to 80, and a male 10 to 15 and 15 to 20, and a female 15 to 20 and 20 to 30. It is not known if or how this Elizabeth Duncan is related to Joseph Duncan (1.2.).

--   One Anthony Duncan appears on the tax lists of White Co. TN in 1815, Capt. Guinn's Co. Cook's Ferry, 1 white pole.

--   The following were said to have been descendants of Anthony Duncan: Blanton Duncan, lived in Kentucky; General Duncan of Louisiana; Hon. Alexander Duncan of Cincinnati, Ohio; Gov. John Duncan of Illinois. (Paper of Calvin A. Duncan, from "John Duncan of Blount Co. TN and His Descendants" by John C. Crawford III, 1959). There is NO PROOF and this statement may be in error.

--   One Andrew Duncan owned land in Augusta Co. VA as early as 1748 (Augusta Co. VA Deed Book 2, pg. 173), and died there in 1762; his widow Jane or Janet married 2nd William McCutchen (Augusta Co. VA Court Order Book XVII, pg. 244, and Book XX, pg. 504; from "Chronicles of the Scotch-Irish Settlement in VA þ Augusta Co., 1745-1800" by Chalkley, Vol. I, pg. 215, 253; Will Book 3, pg. 69, from "Chronicles" Vol. III, pg. 69); Jane and William McCutchen were both dead by 1791 (Augusta Co. VA Will Book VII, pg. 414; from "Chronicles" Vol. III, pg. 196). In 1768 one Andrew Duncan of Pennsylvania was mentioned (Delinquent Tax Levies, 1768, from "Chronicles" Vol. II, pg. 421).

Andrew and Jane or Jean or Janet Duncan had children (Augusta Co. VA Deed Book 32, pg. 1, from "They Went Thataway" by Charles Hamlin, from Evelyn Sigler; baptisms from "The Tinkling Spring, Headwater of Freedom, A Study of the Church and Her People 1732-1952" by Wilson, 1954, from Donald W. Duncan):

                  a.  Joseph Duncan, bapt. 15 Aug. 1747 in the Tinkling Spring congregation; David Sayers was his guardian in 1762 (Augusta Co. VA Will Book 3, pg. 247, orphan of Andrew); he was not named in his father's will ("Chronicles" Vol. III, pg. 69), no record has been found that he released his interest in his father's land, nor was he a party to the suit in Augusta Co. VA on 23 July 1791, decided March 1796, over a caveat for his father's land ("Chronicles" Vol. I, pg. 408-9).

                  b.  Elizabeth Duncan, bapt. 26 Feb. 1749 at South Mountain, a settlement and meeting house 16 miles southwest of Tinkling Spring; married Samuel Buchanan; of Davidson Co. TN 1802 (Augusta Co. VA Deed Book 32, pg. 1, 11).

                  c.  "Jinnet" or Janet Duncan; married John Edmonson; of Davidson Co. TN 1802 (Augusta Co. VA Deed Book 32, pg. 1, 11).

                  d.  Mary Duncan; married David Craig; of Blount Co. TN 1802, Williamson Co. TN 1805 (Augusta Co. VA Deed Book 32, pg. 1, 11; also "The Blount Journal" Vol. III #2 and Vol. IV #1, 1987-88, written by Mr. and Mrs. Joe M. Craig of CA (address not included here), from Georgia Helderlein).

                  e.  Jane Duncan; married John McKinney; of Williamson Co. TN 1802 (Augusta Co. VA Deed Book 32, pg. 1, 11).

                  f.  Florence Duncan; married James Brownlee; of Augusta Co. VA 1802 (Augusta Co. VA Deed Book 32, pg. 1).

                  g.  Andrew Duncan Jr.; died by 21 Feb. 1786 when his will dated 25 March 1784 was filed in Lincoln Co. KY naming his sister Elizabeth Buchanan's son Andrew; sister Mary Craig's son James; sister Jenny Edmiston's son Andrew; sister Jean McKinney's dau. Jenny; sister Florence Brownlee's dau. Jenny; his brother-in-law John "Edmison" and John McKinney were his executors (Lincoln Co. KY Will Book 1, pg. 130); John McKinney was allowed traveling expenses to Augusta Co. (Lincoln Co. KY Will Book B, pg. 27).

Andrew Duncan's brother James apparently died before Andrew, leaving children James, Joseph and John, minors, in 1762 (Augusta Co. VA Will Book 3, pg. 245-247). It is not known if this Andrew and James Duncan were related to the Duncans in Section III. These families are being researched by Mrs. Joyce Graf of VA (address not included here); Mr. Michael K. Hendrix of TX (address not included here); Joan M. Rose of IN (address not included here) ("Genealogical Helper" Mar-Apr 1988); Nancy Maxwell of CA (address not included here) ("The Backtracker" Vol. 17#1, Feb. 1988).

2.  Andrew Duncan, probably born between 1750 and 1760; married Jane --------; died about 1808 in Washington Co. TN. Jane died after 1827.

Andrew was in Montgomery Co. VA 1777-1787. He was on the tax list dated 5 Dec. 1777 ("Early Adventures on the Western Waters" by Kegley; from Evelyn Sigler); he and Anthony Duncan (1.) gave their Oaths of Allegiance to John Montgomery on 6 Sept. 1777 (1776) in Montgomery Co. VA ("VA Military Records" Montgomery Co.'s Revolutionary Heritage, by Ruby Altizer Roberts, pg. 208); Andrew was in Capt. Edward's Company, age 16 to 50, on the list of 24 March 1781 ("Militia of Montgomery Co. VA 1777-1790" by Kegley).

He was on the tax list of 1782 with 1 white pole, 2 horses, 1 cattle, and land ("Montgomery Co. VA Tax List 1782" by Kegley; "1782-1787 VA Taxpayers" by Fothergill), as were Anthony (1.), James (5.), and John (3.?). There was a second listing for an Andrew Duncan in Washington Co. VA in 1782 but it is not known if this was the same Andrew Duncan ("1782-1787 VA Taxpayers" by Fothergill). In 1785, he was overseer of the road from Peak Creek to Andrew Boyds near the town of Draper ("Early Adventures on the Western Waters" by Kegley, Vol. II, from Evelyn Sigler). That same year, he had a land grant (VA State Land Grants, Upper Valley, from Charles Gordon, location not given); Andrew and his wife Jane sold land in 1787 on Raccoon Branch of New River (Montgomery Co. VA Deed Book A, pg. 452). He had gone to NC in 1787, to the part that was TN ("Montgomery Co. VA Circa 1790" by Schreiner-Yantis, pg. 78).

Andrew bought 194 acres in Washington Co. TN in 1788 from Isaac Anderson, witnessed by Joseph Duncan, John Allison and Robert R. Allison (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 4, pg. 109) and in 1799 sold 100 acres at the head of Big Limestone next to Joseph Duncan (Deed Book 6, pg. 427). He witnessed 1791 and 1798 deeds to Joseph Duncan for land on Big Limestone (Deed Book 6, pg. 458, from Alexander Morrow; Book 7, pg. 339, 341). He was on the Washington Co. TN tax lists from before 1792 to 1806; his wife Jane (Gean) was on the tax lists in 1808 and 1821 through 1827; and his children from 1809 to 1827. He had died by 17 May 1808, when his heirs owned the 194 acres he bought from Isaac Anderson (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 12, pg. 28).

His heirs had a grant from Tennessee in 1813 (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 13, pg. 368). On 8 Oct. 1827, his widow Jane and heirs James, Samuel, Andrew, Joseph, Francis, Jonathan, and George Duncan, and Jane and Thomas Guin, sold land on Big Limestone to Jacob Kibler, witnessed by Joseph Duncan Jr., George Bell and George Squibb (Deed Book 18, pg. 181). A dispute about this land was settled in the Greene Co. TN Chancery Court in 1828. In 1812, Joseph Duncan (2.5.) lived in Warren Co. KY and sold his 1/7 share of his father Andrew Duncan's estate to Uriah Hunt, his father-in-law (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 18, pg. 100). Andrew's widow was to live on the land for life so no deed was made; Uriah Hunt had died in 1824; Mrs. Duncan released her land in 1828. The Duncan heirs sold the entire tract to Jacob Keebler; the Hunt heirs wanted to recover the money their father Uriah Hunt paid for the 1/7 interest. Smith Hunt dismissed the charges and Samuel Duncan paid court costs on behalf of Joseph Duncan who lived in Blount Co. TN in 1828. There were several court cases among the heirs of Uriah Hunt in Greene Co., which may be where Uriah Hunt died. Uriah Hunt's heirs were named as Smith Hunt, Peter Hunt and wife Deliah, Joseph Duncan (2.5.) and wife Rhoda, James Duncan (4.2.) and wife Sarah, Richard B. Martin and wife Alphey or Achson, Payne Squibb and wife Dicey, Thomas Hunt, Uriah Hunt (named in a deed but not in the suit), Jesse Hunt, Benjamin Hunt, and William Hunt; William was deceased by 1835. ("Chancery Court Minutes, Greene Co. TN, Nov. 1825-Jan. 1831", pg. 1, 9, from Evelyn Sigler.)

Andrew's nuncupative will was proved in Washington Co. TN on the oaths of Joseph Duncan and George Bell, and was recorded Oct. 1825 (Washington Co. TN. Will Book 1, pg. 170). It named his wife Jane who was to have the plantation in the hands of his son Andrew, maintenance of the younger children, girls when they marry, daughters already married, land divided equally among the boys except Samuel who already had his part. His inventory was filed in May, 1808 by Joseph Duncan (4.?), George Bell and Samuel Duncan (2.2.); it mentioned his will attached to the inventory (Washington Co. TN Inventory of Estates, Book 00, pg. 199).

Andrew's widow Jane may be the female born 1760-70 with Francis Duncan (2.6.) in 1830 Monroe Co. TN (pg. 104). Most of their daughters have not been identified, but the children include:

2.1.  James S. Duncan, born 25 April 1782; married Mary Mitchel; died 15 Nov. 1834, Blount Co. TN, age 51; "James S." or "James" is buried in the Big Springs Cemetery, Blount Co. TN ("Tombstones, Blount Co. TN" from Ruth Burns; "Blount Co. TN Cemetery Records" by Edith B. Little, from Barbara Blankenship). Mary Mitchel was born 17 Sept. 1789 VA; died in 1860, age 72. (1889 "Portrait & Biographical Album of Louisa Co. IA" by Acme Pub., pg. 496-7 for son George W. Duncan (2.1.9.); "The Duncan Family" by Daisy Duncan Harden and Walter G. Duncan, Chicago, IL, 1930). James' will dated 4 Oct. 1831 was probated 11 Sept. 1838 (Blount Co. TN Will Book 1, pg. 32). James Duncan Sr. bequeathed to his wife Mary, his share of land grants made with Eli Ritchie, and named his children Andrew Duncan, William M. Duncan, Jane S. Duncan, James K. Duncan, Elizabeth N. Duncan, Samuel Duncan, Martha Ann Duncan, John Duncan, and George W. Duncan; his executors were Andrew Duncan Sr. (2.4.), and John McConnell.

On 2 July 1841, George McKay and wife Jane S. McKay, John C. Richey and wife Elizabeth N. Richey, Martha W. Edmondson, Martha Ann Edmondson, James K. Duncan, William M. Duncan, Samuel Duncan, and John Duncan, as the heirs of James Duncan decd, for $30 paid each of them, deeded to Andrew Duncan Jr. their undivided interest in land left them by the will of James Duncan; the land joined Samuel Shaw, Joseph Duncan, Samuel Dickson, and George Montgomery; the deed was witnessed by Andrew Duncan and Andrew Ferguson (Blount Co. TN Deed Book V, pg. 44).

Martha W. Edmondson, an heir of James Duncan, has not been identified.

James Duncan was in Washington Co. TN in 1806 to 1808 and 1811 to 1827 with Andrew (tax lists). He had two land grants with Eli Richey (2.7.) in 1826 in Blount Co. TN (TN Land Grant Index); was in Blount Co. TN in 1830 (pg. 271); and his widow Mary, age 62, lived with John C. Ritchey (2.1.5.) in Columbus, Louisa Co. IA, in 1850 (pg. 92). (1889 "Portrait & Biographical Album of Louisa Co. IA" by Acme Pub., pg. 496; "The Duncan Family" by Daisy Duncan Harden and Walter G. The page in "Samuel Duncan and Elizabeth Carmichael Duncan" that listed births and deaths gave the date as 1900, but "The Duncan Family" gave the date as 1910 and named "James Blair" as her husband.

--   One Sarah Duncan married William Cook on 23 Dec. 1842 in Monroe Co. TN; this could have been Sarah Amanda Duncan, but there is NO PROOF.

Co., pg. 353, for son Andrew R. Duncan 2.4.10.). Margaret's date of birth was given as 16 Nov. 1809, or 1807 (1850 census) but it is more likely she was born about or before 1800 according to the 1830 and 1840 census (born 1790-1800) and year of marriage; she was the daughter of Francis Alexander (1889 "Portrait").

Andrew was overseer of the road from John Chester's to David Russell's in Aug. 1814 (Washington Co. TN Court of Pleas & Quarter Sessions 1809-1817, typed pg. 184) and was on the tax lists of Washington Co. TN from 1810 to 1819. This may be the Andrew who had land grant #10869 for 50 acres on Cloud's Creek in Blount Co. TN in 1825 (East TN Land Grant Book 12, pg. 64). Andrew was in Blount Co. TN 1830 (pg. 271) and 1840 (pg. 82); his widow Margaret (age 43) was in Louisa Co. IA in 1850 (pg. 86). Andrew was named executor of his brother James' will, probated in 1838 (2.1.).       2.10.  -------- Duncan who married Azariah Doty and lived in Greene Co. TN about 1800 may have been a daughter of Andrew and Jane Duncan of Washington Co. TN. Family tradition was that Andrew Duncan married at age 70 and had one daughter (paper of Calvin A. Duncan (3.9.2.), from "John Duncan of Blount Co. TN and His Descendants" by John C. Crawford III, 1959). However, see Anthony Duncan (1.) for whom Azariah Doty gave testimony in Anthony's application for a Rev. Pension.

James Duncan (2.1.?) sold land to Thomas Guinn in 1808 (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 10, pg. 145); there is NO PROOF this was the same Thomas Guin. There are several land transactions for a Thomas Guin or Guinn or Gwin in Washington Co. TN early, including a land grant from NC in 1786 (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 4, pg. 48), a grantee deed from Francis Shaw in 1806 (Deed Book 11, pg. 11) and John Thompson in 1809 (Deed Book 12, pg. 76), and grantor deeds to Robert Allison in 1809 (Deed Book 12, pg. 74), to Nicholas Keefauver in 1809 (Deed Book 18, pg. 78), and to Green L. Kennedy in 1824 (Deed Book 17, pg. 402). It is not known if these have any connection to the Thomas Guin who married Jane Duncan.

John Duncan served in the Revolutionary War in 1775 from Rockbridge Co. VA under Capt. Crockett, later transferred to Col. Morgan's Regiment of Riflemen (Rev. Pension). He was in Blount Co. TN in 1800-1801 on the tax lists; and in Blount Co. TN in 1830 on the census (pg. 291); he applied for a Rev. Pension in 1832. TN Will Book 1, pg. 192).

Many of their descendants are found in "John Duncan of Blount Co. TN and His Descendants" by John C. Crawford III, 1959. In order to avoid confusion among the many James, Andrews, etc., the children of John and Margaret (Alexander) Duncan will be listed here briefly, with added information from census, cemetery records, and other documents, with the permission of Judge John C. Crawford III. Dates of birth of the children were given in the Rev. War Pension Application.
