Albert J. Ahern Sr. Seymour—Albert J. Ahern Sr., husband of Mrs. Susan O'Callaghan Ahern of 15 Garden St., died Monday night at Griffin Hospital, Derby, after a long illness. Born in Seymour, he was the son of the late Cornelius and Mary Bunyan Ahern and had resided in Seymour all of his life. He was an army veteran of World War I, serving with the U.S. Cavalry. He was a retired employe [sic] of Farrel Corp. of Ansonia, where he had worked as a security guard. He was a communicant of St. Augustine's Church and a past commander of Emil Senger Post, American Legion of Seymour, a member of the Seymour Police Department and a member of the State Police Association. Besides his wife, he leaves a son, Albert J. Ahern Jr. of Seymour, a former legislative reporter for The Register and presently an aide to Gov. John N. Dempsey; a daughter, Mrs. Frank Shean of Scotia, N.Y.; five grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. A military funeral will be held Thursday at 8:30 a.m. from the Anthony Chepulis Funeral Home, 47 Washington Ave., Seymour, and at 9 a.m. at St. Augustine's Church for a requiem high mass. Herbert L. Ahern Herbert L. Ahern, 28 Beacon St., died Sep. 4 in Cambridge City Hospital after a short illness. He was 69 years old. Born in Cambridge, he lived in Somerville for more than 22 years. William L. Ahearn William L. Ahearn, 83, of 4 Homer Sq., died at Somerville Hospital on Oct. 23, following an accident. A lifelong resident of Somerville, he had been a retired engineer. He was the husband of the late Elizabeth (Gilvoine) Ahearn; father of Barbara Sadler; brother of Joseph of Somerville and John of Swampscott. The funeral was held on Monday from the Anthony F. Michael E. Ahern Michael E. Ahern, 29, of 109 Dover st., Medford died yesterday at University Hospital in Boston. He was chief chemical technician for the Cardinal Cushing Hospital of Brockton and was formerly with the Boston University Medical Center and the South Shore Hospital. Mr. Ahern, a native of Medford, was educated at the Marionapolis School in Connecticut and Merrimack College. He was a member of the American Association of Blood Banks and the American Society of Medical Technicians. He leaves his wife, Mary A. (Luddy), a daughter, Michele A., and his mother, Mrs. Beatrice M. (Buss) Ahern-Mackay of Medford. A requiem high Mass will be held Wednesday at 11 a.m. in St. Joseph's Church, Medford. Percy G. Ahearn Private funeral for Percy G. Ahearn of Kentfield was held today in San Rafael. Ahearn, 74, died yesterday at a local hospital following a lengthy illness. A native of California, he had lived in Kentfield since 1946 and was a member of Fairfax Lodge, Free and Accepted Masons. He is survived by his wife Teresa A. Ahearn; two sons, Paul who lives at home, and Christopher of San Rafael; one sister, Mary Teresa Mallory of Sausalito; and one brother, Harold Ahearn of San Rafael. [A Death Notice in the same paper corrects the above to read one daughter, Mary Teresa Mallory. It adds that he was a native of Stockton, and called "Pat". Nancy (Ahern) Taylor Tampa Fla. Services will be held in Christ the King Church here Monday for Mrs. Joseph W. Taylor Jr., (Formerly Nancy Ahern) a one-time resident of Dorchester. Mrs. Taylor died here after a brief illness Wednesday. She was 50. Born in Dorchester, the daughter of Mrs. John Ahern and the late Dr. John F. Ahern, Mrs. Taylor had graduated from the Jeanne d'Arc Academy in Milton and the Manhattanville College of the Sacred Heart. She moved to Tampa 28 years ago. Besides her mother she leaves her husband Dr. Joseph W. Taylor Jr., five daughters, Mrs. Frank Frankland, Mrs. Thomas Rao, and Janet, Katherine and Nora Taylor, all of Tampa, and two sons, Joseph W. Taylor III and Sean Taylor, both also of Tampa. Maurice F. Ahearn Maurice F. Ahearn, 91, chairman of the Board of Assessors of the City of Somerville from 1930 to 1951 died yesterday in Marlboro. Active in Massachusetts and Middlesex County Association of Assessors, he served as Somerville Alderman from 1915 to 1918, and was a member of the board of the Somerville Savings Bank. Mr. Ahearn was vice president of the W. B. Hastings Insurance Agency of Cambridge. He leaves two sons, Maurice F. Jr. of North Reading; Dr. John Paul Ahearn of Marlboro and a sister, Catherine T. Maurice F. Ahearn Maurice F. Ahearn, an active figure in Somerville politics for many years and a former 80-year resident of 36 Boston Ave., died December 17 in a Marlboro nursing home at the age of 91. Mr. Ahearn served on the Somerville Board of Assessors from 1930 to 1951, part of which time was spent as chairman. He also served as a ward alderman from 1915 to 1918 and was a three-time delegate to the Democratic National Convention. He was a vice-president of the W. B. Hastings Insurance Agency of Cambridge and a member of the board and a corporator of the Somerville Savings Bank. The husband of the late Margaret J. (Finn) Ahearn, he leaves two sons, Maurice F. Jr. of North Reading and Dr. John Paul Ahearn of Marlboro, and one sister, Catherine T. Ahearn of Somerville. A life-long resident of Somerville, he was a retired member of the teamsters union of transportation and business. A 1915 graduate of Harvard College and Dental School, Dr. Ahern practiced dentistry on Bay State road, Back Bay, for 50 years after leaving the army in 1918 as a captain. A member of the Harvard Club for more than 50 years, he was a member of the Senior Society of Harvard Dental School and the Charles River Country Club and was a life member of both the American and Massachusetts Dental Societies. He leaves his wife, Gertrude (Fahey); a stepson, Edward H. Mahoney of Brewster, N.Y.; and a brother, Robert M. of Belmont. Goldie Ahearn Olney, Md., May 11(UPI) — Goldie Ahearn, a well-known sports promoter, died today at the age of 75 of a heart attack. Mr. Ahearn changed his name of Isidore Goldstein to Ahearn after his parents had objected to his boxing professionally under his family name. He won the American Expeditionary Force's 126-pound boxing title while serving overseas during World War I. He retired from professional boxing after a bout with Al Foreman in 1926. In 1935, Mr. Ahearn became the first licensed promoter when boxing was legalized in the District of Columbia. He staged the first legalized boxing show in Washington. — New York Times 12 May 1974

Eunice Hodgkins (Poland) O'Hearn Eunice Hodgkins (Poland) O'Hearn, 94, of 861 Washington St., widow of Martin O'Hearn, died last night at the Cape Ann Nursing Home after a lengthy illness. Mrs. O'Hearn was born here on Jan. 30, 1881, daughter of Capt. William Howard Poland and Emily Center (Pulsifer) Poland. Her father was master of the stone sloop Albert Baldwin. Mrs. O'Hearn's chief interests were church, lodges and family. She was a member of the Annisquam Village Church, the Village Hall Association, and the Annisquam Sewing Bee. She was active in the affairs of the community, being a familiar figure at the annual village fairs. As a Pythian sister, she was associated with the former lodge in Lanesville, where she served as most excellent chief and later as an honorary member of the Hermion Temple. She was also a member of the Massachusetts Past Chiefs' Association, Seashore Rebekah Lodge and Gloucester Woman's Club. In her youth she studied painting with the well-known marine painer [sic] Parker Perkins, and more recently exhibited her early paintings at the Annisquam Art Gallery. She is survived by a son, W. Elliot O'Hearn of Bevery; a daughter M. Eleanor Curtis, wife of Howard A. Curtis; a granddaughter, Carol E. Hubbard, wife of Jay H. Hubbard of Manchester; two great-grandchildren; five nephews, two nieces; many grandnieces and grandnephews. Her funeral will be in the Annisquam Village Church tomorrow at 2 p.m. At the request of her family there will be no visiting hours. In lieu of flowers, memorial gifts may be made to the Annisquam Village Church Memorial Fund. Elizabeth (Ransom) Ahearn Funeral services for Elizabeth Ransom Ahearn were held on Tuesday, December 16, 1975, from the Donald J. MacDonald and Son Funeral Home, 270 Main St., Watertown. Her Funeral Mass followed and was celebrated in St. Patrick's Church by the Rev. Vincent P. Mellone, Associate Pastor. Assisting him were Emma Roche, organist, and Claudette Brennan, soloist. Mrs. Ahearn was born in Newton, a daughter of Frederick W. and Margaret Coen Ransom. She was raised and educated in Watertown and lived here for her lifetiime. On Saturday morning, December 13, she died in St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Brighton, after a brief illness. She is survived by a son, Edward W. Ahearn of Watertown; and by four daughters: Gladys Lyman, Evelyn Bloomer, Marie Chamberlain, all of Watertown; and Helen Arenburg of Waltham. Also included in her survivors are 14 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren; and a sister, Helen Rennie of Newton. Her husband, James Francis Ahearn, former Sealer of Weights and Measures in the town of Watertown, died in 1959. Interment followed in the family lot in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Watertown. Mary Lillian (Duffy) Ahern Funeral services for Mary Lillian Ahern, 81, who died Monday at Pleasant View Nursing Home, St. James, where she had been a resident for two years, were scheduled for this Thursday morning at 11:00 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, with the Rev Lawrence Ginther officiating and interment in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation is at Cummins Funeral Home with a prayer service at 8:00 p.m. this Wednesday. Mrs. Ahern was born August 14, 1894 at Albion, Nebraska, the daughter of James and Elizabeth Duffy. She grew up in Nebraska and Iowa, attending school in those states. She married John Ahern January 29, 1917, at Wayne, NE. They came to the Madelia area in 1919 and farmed until moving to Madelia in 1972. She was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, the Rosary Society and the Missionary Society. Survivors include her husband; four sons, Francis, Mankato; John C., Madelia; Lawrence, Lewisville; and Albert, Madelia; two daughters, Myrtle, Mrs. Harold Warner, Madelia and Marian, Mrs. Curtis Hanson, Mankato; 20 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; one sister, Mrs. Bridgetta Frauenholtz, Madelia. He is the twin brother of Frederick Ahern of Herkimer, New York and the brother of Edward Ahern of Mohawk, New York. He passed away at Ilion Hospital, Ilion, New York on January 27, 1976. Ella (Swann) Wals Mrs. Ella Wals, 68, or Norwalk, Calif., died this morning at a Norwalk hospital following a lengthy illness. She was born on June 15, 1907 the daughter of Ulysses and Margaret O'Hearn Swann [sic]. She was a graduate of Waldo High School and St. mary Nursing Hospital, Milwaukee. In 1945 she was married to Reuben Wals in Norwalk. He died in 1967. Survivors are two sisters, Mrs. Chester McMullen and Mrs. Arno Bartel of Sheboygan; and a brother, Robert Swann [sic] of Norwalk. Thomas Ahern Thomas Ahern, 68, of 9 Lander av., Lynn, owner and operator of the Ahern Movers and Riggers Co. of Lynn, died yesterday at Saugus General Hospital after a long illness. He was born in Charlestown, and had lived in Medford before moving to Lynn 25 years ago. Mr. Ahern worked in the moving business 50 years. He was a member of the Massachusetts Movers Assn. Mr. Ahern served in the Coast Guard Reserve in World War II. He leaves four sons, Thomas J. of Saugus, Fred G. of Nahant, Richard D. of Lynn and Kevin M. Ahern of Saugus; three daughters, Mrs. Carole Roepsch of Lynn and Mrs. Katherine Powicki and Mrs. Patricia Marsh, both of Swampscott; a sister, Mrs. Catherine Thornton of Somerville, and 13 grandchildren. Margaret Catherine (Ahern) Marchant Margaret C. (Ahern) Marchant of 104 Medford st. died May 6 at the age of 66. Mrs. Marchant had worked as a special education teacher at Bedford Jr. High School and was a 1931 graduate of Emmanuel College. The wife of Frederick J. Marchant, she was the mother of Frederick J. Marchant Jr. of Plaistow, N.H., George C. Marchant and Denise A. Marchant of Arlington and Helen M. Butler of Melrose. She is also survived by seven grandchildren. Robert Ahearn Services for Robert Ahearn, 64, publicity representative for Arlington Park race track, were being arranged Tuesday. Mr. Ahearn died Monday while being taken to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights. Before joining the Arlington Park race track staff in 1970 Mr. Ahearn was employed by newspapers in Boston, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and Toronto. Robert "Bobby" Ahearn Word was received here today of the death in Arlington, Ill., last Monday of Robert (Bobby) Ahearn, 64, former turf writer for the Boston American and one-time public relations director at Rockingham Park. At the time of his death Mr. Ahearn was chief of public relations for Arlington Park racetrack. He was only 24 years old when he became head of the publicity staff at Rockingham Park when the New Hampshire racing oval was in its infancy. Over the years he was associated with public relations staffs at a number of major tracks throughout the country. These included Bay Meadow, Garden State, Bowie, Fort Erie, Woodbine, Suffolk Downs, Washington Park and the Freehold Raceway harness track. In addition to the old Boston American, Mr. Ahearn worked for the Los Angeles Daily News, the San Francisco Examiner and Toronto Star. Mr. Ahearn leaves a sister, Mrs. Katherine Slattery of Weathersfield, Conn., and a nephew Paul Slattery of Rochester, N.Y. Ahern, a retired Hartford pharmacist and pharmaceutical salesman for the Merick, Sharpe and Hohme Co., died on Monday (Aug. 16, 1976) at his home, 120 Folly Brook Blvd. He was born in Hartford and lived there all his life until moving to Wethersfield six years ago. Charles V. Ahern Funeral services are scheduled Tuesday for Charles V. Ahern, 52, of 2749 Bromley Drive, San Carlos, who died Dec. 4 at Sequoia Hospital in Redwood City following a lengthy illness. A native of San Fancisco, he had lived in San Carlos for 25 years, and was a staff manager for Pacific Telephone Co., where he had worked for 30 years. Helen M. (Goodwin) Ahearn Helen M. (Goodwin) Ahearn, 65, of 26 Hancock Street died Wednesday morning at the Cape Ann Nursing Home where she had been a patient for the past seven years. Robert M. Ahern Robert M. Ahern, 86, of 64 Edgmoor Road, longtime Belmont resident, died Wednesday after a lengthy illness. He was a retired wool merchant, having been associated with several prominent Boston firms. Mr. Ahern graduated in 1909 from the Boston Latin School and in 1913 from Harvard. He was a resident of Belmont for 50 years. He was employed for many years as a wool merchant by the Draper and Co. and the National Wool Marketing Corporation. He contributed articles to the National Woolgrowers Assn. Trade Journal. Husband of the late Gertrude (O'Callaghan), he leaves two daughters, Miriam Mullin of Durham, N. C. and Elizabeth Lane of Bedford; a son, Robert M. Ahern Jr. of Belmont, and six grandchildren. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon Saturday in St. Joseph's Church. Daniel J. Ahern, Jr. Daniel J. Ahern, Jr., of Newton, executive director of the Back Bay Assn. and urban affairs columnist for The Boston Herald American, was pronounced dead on arrival yesterday at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis. He was 51. A Boston native, Mr. Ahern graduated from Boston Latin School and later from Boston College in 1950. In between he served in combat with the 4th Marine Division in the Pacific during World War II. As a city planner, Mr. Ahern was instrumental in the development of the "New Boston" committee that led to the establishment of the Prudential Center. As executive director of the Back Bay Assn., he was involved in changes in the Copley Square area. Mr. Ahern leaves his wife Shirley (Borden), a son Daniel, three daughters, Kathy, Elizabeth, and Susan, a brother Robert of Hyde Park, and two sisters, Florence, of Marshfield and Dorothy, of New Orleans. Daniel J. Ahern, city planner and Herald columnist, at 51 Daniel J. Ahern Jr., 51, of Newton, executive director of the Back Bay Ass'n and urban affairs columnist for The Boston Herald American, died yesterday while vacationing on Cape Cod. He was dead on arrival at Cape Cod Hospital, Hyannis. Born in Boston, Mr. Ahern was graduated from Boston Latin School and served in Iwo Jima and elsewhere in combat in the Pacific during World War II with the 4th Marine Division for which he was decorated. After the war, he attended Boston College, graduating in 1950. Mr. Ahern became active as a city planner and was instrumental in the development of the "New Boston" committee during the administration of Boston Mayor John B. Hynes that led to the establishment of the Prudential Center. He was associated with the Greater Boston Chamber of Commerce for many years and spearheaded the chamber's waterfront development management plans. Mr. Ahern was also involved in the establishment of the Boston Arts Festival and, more recently, helped with the planning of the Scituate Arts Festival. During the Bicentennial he was involved in the "Where's Boston?" exhibit at the Prudential Center. Mr. Ahern was a frequent guest on television and radio interview programs, answering questions about development projects planned for Boston and the suburbs. As executive director of the Back Bay Ass'n, he was involved in changes to the Copley Square area. Over the years he had been involved in many other city government projects as a planner. He leaves his wife, Shirley (Borden); a son, Daniel, a 1977 Massachusetts Maritime Academy graduate; three daughters, Kathy, Elizabeth and Susan; a brother, Robert of Hyde Park, and two sisters, Florence of Marshfield and Dorothy of New Orleans. Cornelius Michael Ahearn Cornelius Michael Ahearn, who retired in 1976 as a professor of accountancy at Bernard M. Baruch College, died yesterday in New Rochelle (N.Y.) Hospital. He was 66 years old and lived at 25 Gramercy Place, New Rochelle. Professor Ahearn, who had held the post for five years, had previously been business manager for eight years at City College of New York. He had also taught accountancy at Columbia, Fordham and New York Universities, and was a former controller of the Colorado Fuel and Iron Company of Denver. He had won his A.B. degree at Fordham in 1938 and his M.A. at Columbia in 1940. He was a certified public accountant. Professor Ahearn is survived by his wife, the former Helene M. Seiz; six sons, Cornelius Jr., Brian, Michael, Kevin C., Barry D., Denis S., and Rory Michael; a daughter, Eileen Marie Ahearn, and eight [truncated] AHEARN — Cornelius M. Winifred (Towhill) Ahearn OSTERVILLE — A funeral Mass will be said at 9 a.m. tomorrow at Our Lady of the Assumption Church here for Winifred (Towhill) Ahearn, who died Wednesday at Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis. She was 67. Mrs. Ahearn was born in Northampton and lived in Wakefield from 1948 to 1972 before moving to Cape Cod. She was a self-employed designer and maker of women's clothes until she retired in 1951. After that she took up oil painting, despite being handicapped by severe rheumatoid arthritis. Mrs. Ahearn was a communicant of Our Lady of the Assumption Church. She is survived by a sister, Alice J. Winship of Falmouth, three nephews and eight neices. Catherine A. Ahern Miss Catherine A. Ahern, 82, a retired Providence school teacher, died yesterday at Hallworth House, Providence, after two months' illness. She was a teacher at the George W. West School for 42 years, retiring in 1963. Miss Ahern was born in Providence Oct. 9, 1896, a daughter of the late Daniel and Mary A. (O'Rourke) Ahern. She had lived in North Providence for the past 10 years and previously lived in Providence. She was a member of the third order of St. Dominic, the Providence Teachers Association and the National Retired Teachers Association. John M. Aherne John M. Aherne, a Wall Street lawyer with the firm of Brigham, Engler, Jones & Houston, died Sunday in St. Anthony's Hospital, St. Petersburg, Fla., after a long illness. He was 78 years old and had lived in St. Petersburg since he retired six years ago. Mr. Aherne had been associated with the New York concern for 45 years. A widow, he is survived by a daughter, Ann P. Aherne of St. Petersburg. — New York Times 23 August 1979
