Michael T. Ahearn
M. T. AHEARN DEAD; EXPERT ON TRAFFIC
Retired Police Inspector, 37 Years on Force,
Thrice Won Commendations for Work
Michael T. Ahearn of 1924 Putnam Avenue, Ridgewood, Queens, who was in charge of traffic in Brooklyn when he retired in December, 1937, as an inspector in the New York Police Department, died yesterday in the Wyckoff Heights Hospital, Brooklyn, after a fortnight's illness. His age was 75. He was on the force for thirty-seven years. Appointed a patrolman in 1900, Inspector Ahearn reached the rank of captain in 1921, and was made an inspector in 1924. He received three departmental commendations, and, in 1935, a trophy as one of the winners in the police safety campaign. In 1930 the Downtown Brooklyn Association thanked the inspector and Police Commissioner Grover Whalen for "the complete synchronization of the traffic system in the downtown area of Brooklyn."

Inspector Ahearn was occupied with traffic matters during more than half of his career as a policeman. As a captain he was in the office of former Deputy Commissioner Dr. John A. Harriss, traffic specialist. In 1922 he won the gratitude of theatregoers for his solution of the nightly car tangle in the theater-filled block between Broadway and Eighth Avenue. On several occassions he addressed civic organizations on traffic questions. For more than twenty years, and until his final illness, most of Inspector Ahearn's leisure hours were devoted to taking care of a rose garden in the yard of his home on Putnam Avenue. There he attended to 192 bushes, each bearing a different species of rose. Several of his blooms won prizes in flower shows. He had made a study of botany, and, while roses were his favorite, his garden included several other flower varieties. The inspector leaves his wife, Mary; a daughter, Margaret, a son, Henry; a brother, Thomas Ahearn and three grandchildren.

MICHAEL T. AHEARN, 75,
EX-POLICE INSPECTOR, DIES

Later he was transferred to the Gates Avenue Station, subsequently serving in Manhattan, Staten Island and Queens. He was made a sergeant in 1909, and after serving as a lieutenant was appointed a captain in 1921. Several years later he was appointed a deputy inspector and then an inspector.
Made Traffic Changes
While in charge of traffic in this borough he made a survey of various sections and did much to simplify mounting traffic conditions by installation of traffic lights and the opening of one-way streets. Also surviving are a daughter, Mary, a teacher at Public School 84, Queens; a son, Henry, a teacher at John Adams High School, three grandchildren, Mary Ellen, Patricia, and Michael Ahearn, Jr., and a brother, Thomas Ahearn, a retired Post Office employe. Andrew J. Ahearn
SPRINGFIELD, Mass., March 18 — Andrew J. Ahearn, who for thirty-three years had kept a promise he made in 1922 at the Shrine of Ste. Anne de Beaupré in Quebec, died today at his home here. His age was 66. In 1915 Mr. Ahearn fell from a wagon he was loading and suffered spine and leg injuries and a brain clot. He was in hospital for many months and, when he was able to leave, he was forced to use crutches. His wife suggested in 1922 that they visit the Canadian shrine in the hope that divine intervention might give him relief. On July 26, 1922, Mr. Ahearn prayed for an hour and a half at the shrine of Ste. Anne after promising that he would return and bring others each year if he was cured. Upon rising he found that he did not require crutches.

In the years since his cure, Mr. Ahearn had returned each summer to the shrine with the exception of 1932, when he broke both his legs in an automobile accident. Special trains carrying the afflicted to the shrine left this city each summer, with Mr. Ahearn in charge. It is estimated he had returned there with many thousands of persons, and each year he personally assumed the fund-raising task. Mr. Ahearn was a member of the Springfield City Council for eleven years, until 1953, and was a member of the Board of Public Works at the time of his death. Survivors include his widow, son, and a daughter.

William J. Ahearn
William J. Ahearn of 296 East Broadway, who retired two months ago as Commissioner of Records of the Surrogate's Court, New York County, died yesterday at the Veterans Administration Hospital here. His age was 63. He was Tammany leader of the Fourth Assembly District, on the lower East Side, until 1950. Mr. Ahearn, who served with the Twenty-seventh Infantry Division in World War I, was a former assistant corporation counsel. William J. Ahern was the third member of his family to hold the Tammany leadership of the Fourth Assembly District. His election to leadership in 1934 was ascribed to a desire to "keep alive the Ahearn tradition." His brother, Edward J. Ahearn, had been leader before him. The "Ahearn Tradition" began with their father, John F. Ahearn. The tradition was built up over a period of sixty years. Although the old-line leaders were replaced as the character of the East Side changed, the Ahearns remained largely because they practiced the old Tammany principle that leaders should keep close to their districts and their people.

William J. Ahearn lived only three doors from the John F. Ahearn Association clubhouse, which served as the center of Tammany activity in the district. There he was available to the voters at all hours. Unlike his father and his brother, Mr. Ahearn was not active in Democratic politics outside of his district. His father had served as a State Senator and Borough President before his removal by Gov. Charles Evan Hughes in 1907. His brother, who missed being elected leader of Tammany Hall by only a few votes despite the opposition of Mayor James J. Walker in 1929, was one of the leading factors in the ouster of John F. Curry as leader.

He was a stanch [sic] supporter of the late James J. Dooling, whom his brother had helped to make the leader of Tammany Hall. Early in 1942 Mr. Ahearn aligned himself with Michael J. Kennedy in the latter's successful campaign for the Tammany leadership. However, his participation in both movements was really passive. This may have been a result of the fact that his health was not good during the time he was district leader. Mr. Ahearn, a lawyer, became Commissioner of Records of the Surrogate's Court in 1934. Mr. Ahearn leaves two daughters, Mrs. Ann Elizabeth Talt and Miss Sarah Helen Ahearn, and three sisters, Mrs. William J. Murray, Mrs. Howard P. Keady and Mrs. Elizabeth Hood. Francis J. Ahern
Police Chief Francis J. Ahern collapsed and died of a heart attack late yesterday while watching the Giants-Dodgers baseball game at Seals Stadium. It came when the score was tied 4-4 in the 15th inning and San Francisco's Jackie Brandt beat out an infield hit that loaded the bases. Ahern, an avid baseball fan, slumped in his seat in a box behind home plate.

Chief of Police Francis J. Ahern Dies At a Baseball Game in San Francisco
SAN FRANCISCO, Sept. 1 (AP) — Chief of Police Francis J. Ahern of San Francisco suffered a heart attack in his box at Seals Stadium today and died almost immediately. His age was 58. Chief Ahern was stricken during the thirteenth inning of the game between the Los Angeles Dodgers and the San Francisco Giants. He was sitting in his box behind home plate with his wife. Mrs. Ahern collapsed and is under medical treatment for shock.

Chief Ahern was known as a dedicated "tough cop." His appointment as head of the San Francisco Police Department by Mayor George Christopher in January, 1956, came as a surprise. His Civil Service rating at the time was that of patrolman. The Mayor made the appointment two weeks after he took office. Neither Mayor Christopher nor two of the city's three police commissioners had been acquainted with the new chief, and the third had known him only slightly. They said they had decided he was the man to head the force soon after Federal Treasury agents had praised "the wonderful work of Frank Ahern" during a series of raids on bookmakers. Chief Ahern already had made a reputation as head of the Homicide Squad, The Senate Crime Investigation Committee headed by Senator Estes Kefauver had borrowed Mr. Ahern to help in its work.

Police Chief Frank Ahern Of SF Dies At Ball Game
San Francisco-Police Chief Frank Ahern, the "tough cop" who saw to it that San Francisco remained a closed town, died of a heart attack Monday while watching a baseball game. He was 58. Ahern collapsed in box seat at Seals Stadium while watching the 15th inning of a game between the San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers. He was on the first day back from his vacation.

Dr. Robert Palmer, the Giants' physician, rushed to Ahern's side and had him removed to the stadium first aid station where he died at 6:45 p.m. His wife, Gertrude, was at his side. Mrs. Ahern said her husband had been suffering from a mild heart condition, but there was no indication he was in serious danger.

Two Roman Catholic priests who were sharing Ahern's box, administered the last rites of the church. They were Father William Stewart and Monsignor William Flanagan. After his death, Ahern's body was taken to Mission Emergency Hospital to await funeral arrangements.

Ahern is also survived by two children, Bernadette, 20, a student at San Francisco College for Women, and Francis Joseph, 15.

Ahern, who prided himself on being a "tough cop," joined the force in 1929. He passed the examination for the Police Department without studying for it. He was still listed as a patrolman on civil service lists. He never took any of the department's promotional examinations, saying he was too busy with police work. In 1956, Ahern took over as head of the department and pushed a drive for a "closed town." Meanwhile, Deputy Police Chief Thomas J. Cahill took over Ahern's duties until the three members of the Police Commission name a permanent successor. Mayor George Christopher had been spending the weekend at the Russian River. He returned home immediately on learning of Ahern's death.

The chief's body will lie in state until 8 o'clock tonight when rosary will be recited in the rotunda of the city hall. Flags on the city hall, the hall of justice and the city's police stations were at half staff. A native of San Francisco, Ahern entered the police department in 1929. He never rose above the civil service rank of patrolman because as he explained, "I was always too busy to study for the examinations." He was named inspector and assigned to the homicide squad in 1937. He was head of the squad from 1946 until his appointment as chief on February 1.

John W. "Jack" O'Hearn
One of the best-known firefighters in the eastern part of the nation was taken by death last Monday when John W. O'Hearn passed away at Cardinal O'Connell House of St. Elizabeth's Hospital. He had been sick for two months and died in his 85th year. A native son and life-long resident of Watertown, he served the Town 49 years as a fireman and for 30 of those years was chief of the department. He also filled the office of Selectman.

Chief O'Hearn, as he was known to countless thousands of persons, is survived by his wife, the former Agnes T. McKenney and by several nieces and nephews. He was born in the East End on September 16, 1873, the son of the late William and Hannah (Whelan) O'Hearn. He learned the trade of a plumber and when the engine house was next to the old Town Hall, on Church Street, he was operating a plumbing shop on Main Street across from Church Street.

His service began as a substitute on Ladder 1. On June 1, 1896, he was made a call hoseman on Engine 1. He became a call lieutenant on May 1, 1900 and one year later was appointed a call captain, an office he filled until May 1, 1911, when he was appointed assistant chief. Exactly one year later he was appointed chief, as a permanent member of the department, and served in that capacity until his retirement by the Board of Selectmen on November 29, 1944. He had reached the compulsory retirement age on September 15, 1943, and was immediately re-employed by the Selectmen under the emergency law in effect during the second world war. Following his retirement in 1944, he became interested in politics and in the town election of March, 1945, running as an independent, he achieved election to the Board of Selectmen for a three-year term.

Jack O'Hearn was instrumental in organizing the New England Association of Fire Chiefs in 1922. He was chosen as secretary and treasurer of the organization and was reelected annually until this year. When the annual meeting was held last June he tendered his resignation because of his illness. A special committee considered the case and recommended his election for the 37th time. This was done, then his resignation was accepted and he was elected Secretary-Treasurer emeritus. Over the years he had guided the association through troublesome times and had done much to make it a successful organization.

He was a past president of the Watertown Rotary Club; a 50-year member of both the Watertown Council, K. of C., and Watertown Division, A.O.H. He was a corporator of the Watertown Savings Bank, had served on many town committees and at the time of his death was a member of the Incinerator Committee. He held membership in the Holy Name Society of St. Patrick's Parish, the St. Patrick's Alumni Association and Watertown Lodge of Elks. Although not a veteran, he was one of two honorary members of Watertown Post 99, American Legion, and honor that was bestowed upon him in recognition of his service to the community.
