Maurice O'Hern was born and raised in Hammond, working as an engineer at American Steel Foundries for 25 years, then at Purdue University Calumet and Bishop Noll Institute. Maurice passed away March 30, 1999, at the age of 84. Before his death he shared his memories and provided research and guidance to The Times as a member of the Times Capsule advisory board. His interest in local history led him to write articles on growing up in the 1920s, the American Steel Foundries, Hammond's theaters and theater organist John Muri. Maurice not only researched the history of Hammond's theaters, he lived it. He was a frequent customer of the Bijou -- because it played more cowboy movies than "boring" romances. He saw, and even petted, Rin Tin Tin -- in the lobby of the Parthenon theater when the large German shepherd was a movie star. He vividly remembers going to All Saints Church to serve Mass on Nov. 8, 1927, and, when he saw no one around, seeing the State Theater across the street had been bombed. Maurice's articles are on file in the Calumet Room of the Hammond Public Library. Here are excerpts from his writings on the life of a boy growing up in Hammond in the 1920s.

Jack Diamond Ahearn Monahan
HOLYOKE - Jack Diamond Ahearn Monahan, 23-month-old son of Thomas and Susan (Breen) Monahan of Holyoke, died Wednesday at home of leukemia. He was a member of Holy Cross Church. Besides his parents, he leaves a brother, Thomas, and two sisters, Casey and Maria, all at home; and his grand-parents, Thomas and Rhea Monahan of Southampton and Donald and Martha Breen of Holyoke. The funeral will be Saturday morning at Messier Funeral Home and the church, with burial in Calvary Cemetery. Calling hours are this evening. Memorial contributions may be made to the Griffin's Friends Children's Cancer Fund, in care of Baystate Medical Center, 759 Chestnut St., Springfield, MA 01199, or the Morgan School Playground Fund, 596 Southbridge St., Holyoke, MA 01040.
Eulogy by Mary Monahan Burgess
Jack was extraordinarily special
Jack Diamond Ahearn Monahan. That's a pretty big name for such a little fellow to carry. But in that name flows the legacy that made Jack who he was and reinforced in us who we are. The Breen family and Monahan family were raised in homes where despite the Americanization and standardization of our culture, in times of crises and deep emotional impact, our Irish culture, always flowing just below the surface raises to envelope us with its comfort of tradition and tight circle of family and friends. In Jack's name we find fragments of that family legacy that gave us the gift of Jack. And that gift manifested itself so clearly in this passing this past Wednesday. In and of himself, Jack was extraordinarily special. His personality showed an outgoing and inquisitive young child. He also had a strong sense of what he wanted and clearly expressed those wants, such as when he wanted Nana on the floor playing with his cars with him. But beyond that, Jack's gift to us was each other and a reaffirmation of our legacy. From the moment of his diagnosis, the Monahan and Breen families rallied. And on Wednesday a custom long ago replaced by a well intentioned society, was again honored when Jack's family and friends all showed up at the home to say goodbye to their playmate, cousin, nephew, grandson, brother, and son. The sons and daughters, grandsons and granddaughters, and the great grandchildren of the Breens, Monahans, Ahearns, Sullivans, Kanes (spelled with an A), Keanes (spelled with an "ea"), Mullens, Burns, Bachs, and let's not forget great-great uncle Diamond Kane (spelled with an "a"), shared in the immeasurable loss of Jack but felt comfort in the reinforcement of family. That was Jack's gift to us. And let me make it clear that Jack's family is not exclusive to blood relations. The Lincoln Street neighborhood, the public school community, the medical community, and the Holyoke community at large responded with support ranging from words of encouragement to a monumental blood drive in his name. Jack showed us that as a family and community we can come together and support and in turn receive support. That was Jack's gift to us. And to cherish that gift and the memory of Jack we need to continue support of the family and friends of Jack. And we need to take that ability to help others, which we now know we have because of our help to Jack and his family, and help and support others. And we do this because it's our way of saying thank you to Jack for his gift to us.

He was a graduate of the FBI National Academy. He had lived in the Kensington section of Berlin since 1972.

COMMUNITY GRIEVES OVER POLICE OFFICER'S DEATH
When retired police Officer Jimmy Ahern died suddenly Friday, mourners included not only his wife, two sons and other family, but almost everyone who met him. "Very few people liked Jimmy. Most people loved him," said a grieving Sgt. Henry Orzel, who was Ahern's assistant in the New Britain police identification bureau until Ahern's retirement in 1992 as a lieutenant. Mayor Lucian Pawlak said Tuesday that Ahern's death of an apparent heart attack at age 53 has been the talk of the community. "I went to several events Sunday, and his death was a main topic. For one man, a cop, to make such a positive impression, that says something about what kind of person he was," Pawlak said. "He always had a smile and always had time for people." Several hundred mourners, including dozens of law-enforcement agents from state and local agencies, are expected at calling hours today from 4 to 8 p.m. at the Farrell Funeral Home in New Britain and at the burial Thursday at St. Joseph's Church at 10 a.m. During Ahern's 25-year career, he nabbed outlaws -- even while off-duty -- and took thousands of photographs at crime scenes, including the infamous Donna Lee bakery murders in 1974. He earned professional acclaim for his crime-scene work, friends said, and was always willing to help fellow officers on a case. "I remember when I was a new detective in the Berlin Police Department in the early 1970s, Jimmy would come down to our station on his own time to help me classify fingerprints," said Larry Skinner, now chief investigator for New Britain State's Attorney Scott Murphy. "He would help any cop, anyone really." "Jimmy Ahern was a good cop. He was a great guy," Murphy said. "I don't think he met anyone who he didn't consider a friend." New Britain police Chief William Sencio said Ahern's file contains numerous citations and letters of commendation. In August 1970, Ahern collared two bank robbers and recovered a stolen $11,000. In 1980, he was off-duty when he spotted and arrested a man wanted for the theft of an expensive camera from Central Connecticut State College. Ahern even came onto the force with a distinction: his academy grade of 91 was, at that time, the highest mark earned by an officer from New Britain, Sencio said. Those who worked with Ahern both on the force and in post-retirement civilian jobs he held in East Hartford and Newington said his intelligence and professionalism were quickly evident. "I looked to him for insight and guidance," said Lt. John Murphy of East Hartford. "He came to us as our records supervisor and he did so much to help us. He was a true professional with a wealth of knowledge." At the time of his death, Ahern was assistant to Newington police Chief Richard Klett. "He's not replaceable," Klett said. "Jimmy could do everything. He was technologically adept. He took over our computer-assisted records management, revamped our communications center and our training room. He seemed to know everybody and got the job done. It's a significant loss, not just for us, but for anyone who knew him."

James Ahearn
James Ahearn, former assistant director of the Miami Beach Convention Center, died from pulmonary complications Wednesday at his Miami Beach home. He was 76. Ahearn, a civil engineer for the city, also helped build South Beach's first marina. "The one with all the good eating places around it," his wife, Gertrude, said about the marina off Alton Road. "There was nothing much around there back in those days. A new marina was very exciting news to the area." A native of Beverly, Mass., Ahearn was attracted to Miami Beach in the early 1950s - "why, for the weather of course," his wife said. Ahearn worked briefly in the insurance business before going to work for the city as a civil engineer in the mid-'60s. After the completion of the South Beach marina, Ahearn was appointed assistant director of the Beach Convention Center, and was involved in the center's expansion. "He had a hand in everything that went on there - the automobile and boat shows, medical conventions and his favorite - the circus," his wife said. Ahearn also served as president of the City of Miami Beach Employees Association. In addition to his wife, Ahearn is survived by his daughter Mary Jane and sister Margarate Charland. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Patrick Church, 3716 Garden Ave., Miami Beach. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the St. Patrick's Church Building Fund.

AHERN, Donald V. — Found peace when he left this world on Friday, October 29, 1999 after a tenacious battle with cancer. Born April 27, 1948 to Louise Wilks Ahern, Don grew to be a star athlete beginning with his first baseman days in Little League in East Palo Alto, continuing through wrestling and football careers at Ravenswood High School, Foothill JC and Chico State. Don taught junior high locally from 1972-78 where he first began touching the lives of young people. His love for the young was expressed in his dedication to coaching numerous youth team sports and in his role as confidant to kids in need of a friend. Don's proudest, most rewarding and life sustaining moments were those he shared with his daughter, Brienne, his loving daughter, confident and friend. She gave to him her gift as a disciplined, talented athlete. From 1980-97 Don was a firefighter for the city of San Jose Fire Dept. where he received a letter of commendation for an act of heroism in 1996. He was proud of his work, sharing priceless moments with fellow firefighters. Don leaves behind his daughter, Brienne Ahern and her mother, Teresa Ahern of Santa Clara; his twin sister, Diane Anderson of Arcata, CA; his nieces Johanna Anderson of Arcata and Emily Anderson of Sacramento, CA and many fun-loving, dear friends. He also leaves behind his wonderful care givers, John Shields and Nicole Polk who held his hand and shared his quirky jokes and ways, loving him unconditionally. A private potluck and celebration of his life will be held Sunday, November 14, 1999, 12:00-4:00 p.m. at his home in Sunnyvale, CA. Jeremiah "Shine" Ahern
A sixty-year-old Lisselton man who was struck by a car near his home last February, died from cerebral trauma consistent with a road traffic accident, a jury decided at an inquest held at Listowel Coroner's Court on Monday. The deceased was Jeremiah "Shine" Ahern of Loughanes, Lisselton, who died on the roadway near his home in the early hours of February 15 last. The jury heard how Mr Ahern had been struck by a vehicle driven by his neighbour's son shortly after 11.30pm on the night of February 14. He had just alighted from a bus which was taking him home from Katie Nolan's pub. A statement made by the driver of the car, was read out to the court by Inspector Martin McCarthy. The 17-year-old - whose name is with-held because of his age - described how he was driving his parents and two of their friends on the night in question close to their home at Loughanes. He saw the light of an oncoming minibus and immediately after it had passed, he heard a thump and saw a man coming up on to his bonnet of the car for a split second. He went out on the road and immediately recognised the man as Jerry "Shine" Ahern, his neighbour. He then shouted for an ambulance. A statement made by the driver's father was also read out at the court. He explained in the statement that he had been in Askeaton with friends earlier on the night of the accident when the car he was travelling in broke down. He said his wife and his son subsequently picked him and his friends up and were driving them home when the accident happened. "I recall seeing the lights of an oncoming car. I thought I saw a shadow and then I saw a person on the windscreen. My son got out first and we saw a man lying on the road. We recognised him as Jerry "Shine" Ahern of Loughanes. My son was hysterical. I put a coat under the man's head and then the Gardaí arrived,'' the statement read. Hackney driver John Horgan was also a witness at the Coroner's Court and he described in his statement how he drove Jerry "Shine" home on the night. The accident occurred almost immediately after he dropped him off, he said. The night was dry and clear and this was a straight stretch of road. A statement read to the inquest given by Nurse Margaret Barry described how she arrived at the scene just as Mr Ahern died. She said he initially had a pulse when she got there, but she realised his injuries were serious. Pathologist Dr Margaret Bolster told the coroner that she carried out the autopsy on Mr Ahern. She said the main injuries involved were to the left side of his head. He had multiple chest and head injuries and bruising to his abdomen and an extensive fracture to his head. Ms Bolster said that in her opinion, the cause of death was cerebral trauma consistent with a road traffic accident. The jury unanimously recorded a verdict in accordance with the pathologist's evidence. The coroner Helen Lucey extended her sympathy to the family of Mr Ahern. She said the accident was particularly tragic in view of the fact that both parties involved were neighbours. Sympathies were also extended by Inspector McCarthy and by the foreman of the jury.
