  4. OBITUARY MARTIN VANBUREN DALLAS Oakley Graphic, Oakley, Kansas, Logan County, Friday, September 26, 1913
  Martin VanBuren Dallas was born April 22, 1835, in the state of Ohio. From there he moved with his parents to Illinois and from there he moved to Missouri and then to Kansas.
  He served in the Civil War, being one of the "boys" who rallied around Old Glory to keep the flag waving over an undivided country.
  He was a christian for a number of years, but of late years owing to his deafness, has not attended church very much, but was always true and loyal and very devoted to his home.
  He leaves, besides his wife, one sister, one brother, three sons, eight daughters, and a host of grandchildren and friends to mourn his departure, which occurred at his home Monday evening, September 22nd.
  He was buried from the Methodist Episcopal Church Wednesday forenoon and laid to rest in the Oakley cemetery.

An obituary published in the Shelbyville Democrat on April 4, 1918 for Arch Shelton, stated he had died at his home on North Broadway Tuesday [April 2, 1918]. Mr. Shelton's ancestor, on the parental side, three generations back emigrated from England and coming to America, settled in Virginia. On his maternal side his ancestors came from French and Wales stock. He was one of ten children born to his parents, Jesse and Margaret Shelton. His father and mother moved from Virginia to Ohio and from that state they moved to Madison County, Indiana, where they resided until 1857 when they moved to Prairie Township in Shelby County. His mother died in 1878 and his father at the advanced age of 88 years died in 1885. Archibald Askin Shelton, the subject of this sketch, was born in Madison County, Indiana, October 6, 1833 and at the time of his death, 84 years, 5 months and 26 days old. Like all farmer boys his youth was employed at work on the farm, assisting his father and attending the district schools and learning the rudimentary principles of an education during the winter months. At the age of 17 years he began as a carpenter's apprentice and at that trade he worked four years. He was married to Miss Lucinda Seward, on September 19, 1853, and four years afterward they moved to Shelby County, settling in Prairie Township where they resided until 1877 when they moved to Shelbyville. To them eight children, six daughters and two sons were born, six of which survived their father. The surviving were: Miss Loretta Shelton and J. Delton Shelton, both at home; Mrs. John J. Ford and Mrs. Isaac S. Storm, both of Shelbyville; Mrs. Henry Jackson of St. Louis and Mrs. Wm. B. Hart of Chicago. Besides these he was survived by one brother, Alex Shelton of Prairie Township. During all of Mr. Shelton's life, up to the time he retired, he was active in the affairs of a public nature. He was active in the affairs of Prairie Township while he was a resident there, having repeatedly been elected to several offices, among which was that of supervisor. It was during his term of that office that the matter of settling the railroad bond business, which the township had voted to assist in building the Wabash road, was made. In 1877 he was elected County Treasurer which office he held two terms, retiring in December 1884. The funeral services were to be held at the residence, the Rev. Robertson of the Christian Church, officiating, assisted by Rev. Douthit. Jackson Lodge A. F. &. A. Masons were to have charge of the burial services at Glenwood.
