OTHER INFORMATION
Erie County is located on Lake Erie about 40 miles west of Cleveland. It was named for the Erie tribe of Indians, the word "Erie" meaning "cat".
Another Indian word, "Sandusky", means "at the cold water," and names the county seat. Cedar Point, located at Sandusky is the "Disneyland of the Midwest", a popular resort area for over 100 years.
Vegetables are the main agricultural industry. Other main industries include; machinery, food, metals, rubber, paper, ball bearings, animal feeds, lighting fixtures and aluminum products.
County Seat 1811 On this site, was located Avery, the first county seat of Huron County. Here stood the two-story log house used as a courthouse and jail. In 1818, the county seat moved from here to Norwalk (Huron County). In 1838, Erie County was established from the northern part of Huron County.
