- Ancestry.com
- Some incredibly useful documents for researching American roots, including 17th cent. immigrants, early marriage records and Social Security death records.
- Books We Own List - Don't buy that book! At least not until you've checked here first to see if someone can do a look-up for you.
- Cyndi's List of Genealogy Sites on the Internet - Just about the most complete listing of genealogy links on the Net.
- FamilySearch Internet Genealogy Service - Absolutely essential site, provided by the Church of Latter Day Saints. Be sure to read the instructions to get the most out of searching the IGI.
- Family Tree Maker's Genealogy Site - This is the program I use. The site itself is great if you ignore the endless sales pitches, and can endure the frustration of always finding not-quite-enough information. They do have a gargantuan database of names, and people you can contact to find out if you're related.
- GED2HTML: A GEDCOM to HTML Translator - Want a genealogy web site just like this one? This is how it's done.
- GenConnect - An excellent system of genealogy message and query boards, mostly arranged by geographic area. You can read, search and post messages, and even get notified by email if somebody responds.
- Genealogy CD List - A lookup volunteer site for the Family Tree Maker CDs.
- GenForum - A genealogy message board, catagorized by region, surname or area of interest. Quite active.
- Global Genealogical Supply - Imagine my delight when I discovered that these folks are located right down the street from me! Incredible selection of genealogy books, CDs (including the complete Family Tree Maker collection), and assorted stuff.
- Houses of Worship - A fairly comprehensive, searchable database of churches in North America. Useful for locating potential grave sites, etc.
- 19th Century Photography - Everything you ever wanted to know about identifying, dating and preserving historical photographs
- The ROOTS-L Library - Some rather useful historical documents.
Surname Searches:
The Computerized Ancestor - A database of marriages, searchable by bride or groom's name.
GEDCOM - A genealogy FTP site, with many surnames listed - it's just a trick finding the one you're looking for.
GENDEX -- WWW Genealogical Index - One of the better surname search engines - this one gives you real information and links to actual lineages.
Genealogy's Most Wanted - People looking for people.
The Genealogy Tool Box - Another searchable database.
GeneaNet - An interesting approach - this searchable database system returns links to other sites which have information on the name you're looking for. These can include everything from 'ged2html' sites to Tiny Tafels to indexed sections of census records. Can be very helpful.
GenServ: Genealogical GEDCOM Server System - A fairly complex but very useful genealogical database system. You can find out what they have by submitting a surname query, but you need to subscribe in order to access the actual data (subscription is very, very cheap compared to others).
Kindred Konnections Surname Index Search - Another search engine - less useful than some, but you still might find a lead or two.
RootsWeb Genealogical Data Cooperative - A terrific place to find people who are researching the same names as you are. I pieced together 10 generations of my family with the help of people I found here.
Surnames.Com
The SurnameWeb
- Canadian Genealogy Resources - Very useful list of links, catagorized by province
- Canada GenWeb - The general Canadian GenWeb site, with links to all the provincial sites.
- Canadian Geographical Names - Natural Resources Canada - Where the heck is Dumfries? You can find out where and in what township just about any place in Canada is through their search engine. Includes modern and historical place names. Invaluable when consulting census records.
- County Atlas Index - Very helpful online index of a selection of County Atlas' from the 19th century.
- Early Canadiana Online - Search a wide variety of books and documents.
- Family History Centres in Canada - A very useful list.
- InGeneas - A commercial site with an impressive database of Canadian immigration records and passenger lists. Searchable.
- The Irish-Canadian List - A database of information on Irish immigrants to Canada, mostly from the mid-19th century. Unfortunately, it appears to have been abandoned.
- Loyalist Muster Roll Index - An extensive collection of muster rolls from Loyalist regiments.
- United Church Archives - If you have any Canadian Methodists, Presbyterians or Congregationalists in your background, this is a wonderful place to go. Especially if, like me, you had ministers in your family. Beautiful old building, too.
- United Empire Loyalists' Association of Canada (UELA) - A bit much on the "Queen and Country" bit, but really very nice, helpful folks with lots of genealogical resources (even if you aren't U.E.)
Ontario:
- Cemeteries - Southern Ontario - Transcriptions of stones from a few cemeteries in Haldimand-Norfolk Co. not necessarily covered by the OCFA
- Halton Local Historical Databases - Index of names from several sources (vital statistics, newspapers, etc.) for Halton Region
- Index to the 1871 Census of Ontario - National Archives of Canada - Incredibly useful index to the comprehensive 1871 Census.
- Norfolk Genealogy - Links, local history, publications, etc.
- Norfolk Historical Society - These folks have a tremendous collection of books and publications for sale and at their research library in the town of Simcoe
- The Ontario Archives - A guide to their holdings, with reel numbers and available indexes.
- OCFA - The Ontario Cemetery Finding Aid - Genealogy - A searchable index of hundreds of Ontario cemeteries and the folks buried there.
- Ontario Genealogical Society - Not much there, but the links and list of publications are useful.
- Ontario Genealogy Resources - Fantastic collection of links and resources to stuff you might never otherwise find.
- Ontario GenWeb - Probably the best of all the GenWeb sites I've run across so far, with tons of links, resource lists, databases and "how-to's" for those researching their Ontario ancestors. The folks at the Essex and Kent County sites have been especially helpful to me.
- Ontario Locator - Find what county and township a town is in. Even more useful than the Canadian Geographical Names site. Maps, too - even better!
Quebec:
- La Chambres des Notaires du Quebec - Notary records are often the only option when seeking ancestors in early Quebec. They contain everything from land transactions to employment records to marriage contracts. This searchable index is far from complete, but you might get lucky. Warning: it's in French, so you might want to view it through a translation program like the one at http://babelfish.altavista.com/.
- Eastern Townships of Quebec Genealogy - Marlene Simmons is a professional genealogist, but she's got lots of general information here, plus a list of the many resources she can check for you for a fee. She now has her database index searchable online, so you can check to see if she might have more on your ancestors.
- Eastern Township Research - Lots and lots of great references and links for English-speaking families who settled south of the St. Lawrence in Quebec. Pam Waugh is a wonderful, helpful lady who has done a tremendous amount of work here. Part of the Quebec GenWeb
- Grosse Ile, Famine Island - A history of the gateway to Canada used by many thousands of Irish Famine immigrants, many of whom died there.
- Quebec Family History Society - Primarily Anglo-Quebec.
- Belgium: Overview - All things Belgian, from history to geography to culture. Includes a long list of Famous Belgian Things. I am convinced that Canadians and Belgians have a great deal in common...
- A Bit of Dutch History - Just what it says, although it also includes some very useful information on Dutch naming systems, religious groups and other tidbits. Check out the rest of her site too, if you are looking for early Dutch ancestors in America.
- Census Online - New York - Online census records and indexes for New York counties.
- The Dutch in New Amsterdam - Includes early Reformed Dutch Church baptismal records. Check the Olive Tree for marriage and other records
- Bureau of Land Management - Eastern States Home - This is very cool - a site where you can search U.S. land records by name or location, and actually get an image of the record itself! Too bad so few states have been included so far (no NY), but hopefully it will expand.
- NY Dutch Genealogy - New York Dutch families of Ulster, Orange and Columbia counties prior to 1800.
- New York Genealogy - The New York State GenWeb site. Lots of resources, and very helpful people.
- New York State Historical Maps - All sorts of historical maps, from Dutch Colonial through the 19th century.
- The Olive Tree Genealogy Pages - An amazing collection of historical information, family trees and databases, mostly centred around early Dutch and Walloon settlement, and Loyalist history and genealogy. This is, of course, of great interest to me, and I could not have constructed this genealogy without The Olive Tree.
- British Isles GenWeb
- Cornwall Census 1871 - Not just an index, this has ever person listed in the census arranged in family groups, and completely searchable. Very useful if you have ancestors in Cornwall. A free database from Kindred Konnections.
- Directory of Royal Genealogical Data - If you think you've got any noble blood in you at all, this is the place to check. Huge database.
- GENUKI - The alternative to the British Isles GenWeb, this will give you loads of information about exactly what records are available for the area you are researching, plus links to related sites, databases, etc.
