There are a few rules of conduct concerning the list:
1. TRY TO KEEP MESSAGES TO
THE LIST RELEVANT TO YOUR RESEARCH
Please do not send any kind of "chain letter", or messages about
computer viruses.
In many cases, e-mail that asks you to "send this to everyone
you can" is a hoax of some kind. ANY form of "advertising" should
be
relevant to genealogy and of general interest, in good taste, and kept
to a minimum. ALSO, if your message is in response to another posting,
always mention the poster's name in your greeting, or quote the message
you are answering. (see item 4 below regarding replies)
2. PLEASE
DO NOT ATTACH FILES TO ANY MESSAGE SENT TO THE LIST!
If you have a text file or a scanned photograph that someone wants,
by all means, send it to THAT person alone, don't send a large file
to everyone on the list
3. EVERYONE SHOULD TRY TO
PUT UP AN INTRODUCTORY POST. Let us all know
who you are, where you are, etc. It would probably be a good idea to
include some basic personal information. You might also mention
occupations, hobbies, whether you wear a kilt, etc...
4. BY DEFAULT, REPLIES GO
TO THE ENTIRE LIST. Please do not send personal
thank you notes or other messages that are of no interest
to the group in general. If your message contains any genealogical or relevant
historical information, OR, if a poster has done something extraordinary
and you believe he or she should be congratulated, send your message
to the entire list.
If you wish to respond to just one person, you MUST replace the list
address with the individual's address in the "To" or
"Recipient" field in your
email software. If the email address of the person who posted the message
is listed in the "footer" at the bottom of the message, you
can "cut and paste" it from there (if your software supports that).
5. BEYOND THAT, POST AS
OFTEN AS YOU LIKE TO SHARE NEWS WITH EVERYONE.
Send questions, like "Does anyone know where cousin whatshisname is
now?". Send ideas, like "would eveyone post their favorite Scottish
recipe for haggis", or "Everyone's invited to our place for Christmas
next year" (be brave!) Remember this is our list - let's use it to our
best advantage. And most of all, have fun!!!
