PIECZONKA
This page contains the data I collected about the Stanisław PIECZONKA
family
in response to an e-mail I received from brothers Alan and Chuck.
After a few days' research, I connected Alan and Chuck to someone in my
family file. Alan and Chuck are my half 4th cousins once
removed. I will document that connect at a later time.

December 2007 -- e-mail from Alan and Chuck
I visited your website regarding births/deaths in
Leki Dolne. My brother and I are tracing our roots, and we
believe that our Grandfather, Stanislaw Pieczonka was born August 3,
1878 in Leki Dolne. However, I do not find his name on the Leki
Dolne or Leki Gorne birth lists. In addition, he had a sister,
Anna Pieczonka, who was born April 15, 1880, supposedly in the same
area....
Marge's Note: I have a website with a partial transcription of
the church
records for the Parish of Łęki Górne / Leki Gorne. This is
the site that Alan and Chuck are referring to.
http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/%7Epolishrecords/leki.htm
Not long after receiving this e-mail, I visited my local Mormon Family
History Center (FHC), where I have the microfilmed records of the
parish church in Łęki Górne, Poland. I checked these
microfilms
looking for a birth/baptism record for Stanislaus and his sister Anna
PIECZONKA. I was unable to find records matching the
dates given by Alan and Chuck. I wrote back and asked for
additional
information about their grandfather that might help me locate his birth
record.
They responded saying that their grandmother was a daughter of Josef
CYCON. They also noted that their grandfather had a half sister
named Marya KORTZ. Having the maiden name of Alan and Chuck's
grandmother, I checked a few of the databases on the Polish
Genealogical Society of America's (PGSA) website at
http://pgsa.org. My search of the
marriage index for Polish Parishes in Chicago revealed the following:

In addition to the microfilms of the Łęki parish I also have the
microfilms for the St. John Cantius Church in Chicago from which this
index was created. On my next visit to the FHC I looked up the
marriage record for Stanley PIECZONKA and Maria CYCON with the hope of
finding their parents' names on the document. Stanisław was a son
of Andrzej PIECZONKA and Katarzyna nee URYASZ, born in Łęki,
Galicia. Maryanna was a daughter of Jozef CYCOŃ and Anna SZMYT,
born in Stara Wieś, Galicia.
Prior to finding the marriage record of Stanisław
and Maryanna, I checked other online resources to piece together
additional
information from U.S. sources. Ultimately I found Stanislaus and
Maria in
the 1910 and 1920 U.S. censuses for Chicago, Cook County,
Illinois. Another database on
the PGSA site named two daughters baptized at St. John Cantius Church
in Chicago. I located a World War I draft registration for
a Stanley PIECZONKA
whose address was the same as that of the Stanley enumerated in the
1920 census. The draft registration gave Stanley's date of birth
as March 19, 1877 -- the 19
had a question mark after it.

When I found Stanley in the 1930 census, his wife was named
Veronica. Alan and Chuck indicated that their grandmother Maria
CYCON PIECZONKA died during the birth of her son Stanley. At the
time of the 1930 census, Stanley was age 3 8/12. The census was
taken in April of 1930, therefore we can calculate that Stanley was
born about August 1926. The PGSA death notice index for the
Polish newspaper Dziennik Chicagoski had an entry for Maryanna
PIECZONKA who died 14 Aug 1926.

On the 1910 and 1920 censuses Stanislaus indicated that he had
immigrated in 1902; the 1930 census said he immigrated in 1903. I
searched the immigration records at Ancestry.com for that timeframe and
found a record for a Stanisl. PIECZONKA, age 25, who came though the
port of Baltimore on 24 Sept 1902 on the ship Neckar. His last
residence was Leki, he was going to Chicago to be with his brother
Tomasz PIECZONKA. I am not sure yet if this is the right
Stanislaus, however some of the details match other information we
have.
The first e-mail from Alan and Chuck also named a sister of their
grandfather: Anna PIECZONKA, born April 15, 1880. I did not
find an Anna PIECZONKA in the Leki records for this date. I asked
Alan and Chuck if Anna had immigrated and if so, had she married.
Anna did immigrate and was married four times. Her first husband
was Jozef STANEK. According the to the marriage index at
pgsa.org, they were married 7 September 1903.

One of the messages I received from Alan and Chuck mentioned their
grandfather had a half-sister named Marya KORTZ. In the 1920
census, at the same address as
Stanislaus and Mary, in another flat were:

I searched the marriage index at the PGSA site and found the following

enumerated in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.

Having found the names of Stanislaus' parents on his marriage record
and a birth date noted on his WW I draft registration, I went back to
the Łęki Parish microfilmed records. This time I located an entry
for Stanislaus in the birth/baptism records. In addition to
Stanislaus' parents his grandparents were also named.

After entering the records for Stanislaus and his family into my
genealogy file, I made a few connections to other folks in the
file. This is how his
