4320 Valentine PRENTICE.  Born abt Feb 1598/99 in Felsted, Essex, England. Baptized on 25 Feb 1598/99 in Felsted, Essex, England. Died in 1633 in Roxbury, MA.

Valentine was a rare name in Essex around 1600. It probably ran within a single Prentice family. A review of hundreds of English records for that period for a multitude of surnames fails to disclose a single Valentine except for the surname Prentice within the county of Essex. For a number of reasons, it seems more likely than not that his is the Valentine Prentice who married in Chelmsford in 1626:

1) He was 27 years old in 1626. No other Valentine of that age bracket has been located. His father, Valentine, was born ca 1565 and would have been about 51 years old in 1626, somewhat old to start a new family;
2) If it were his father, it seems likely that at least one of his children would have accompanied him to America. There is currently no evidence that they did;
3) If it were his father, it would seem likely that New England records would have mentioned a prior marriage, a prior wife, or the children of a prior marriage. There is currently no evidence of such mention;
4) If it were his assumed uncle, Valentine, born ca 1544, that uncle would have been 71 years old in 1626.

He married Alice BREDDA, in 1626 in Chelmsford, Essex, England.

They had the following children:
i. Josias (1627-<1632)
2160 ii. John (1628-1691)
iii. Geremiah (1630-<1632)

4321 Alice BREDDA. Born abt 1600 in probably Essex Co., England. Died aft 1665.

The record of Alice's marriage to Valentine simply indicates her surname with the letter "B." Her surname is given as "Bredda" on her son Joshua's birth record of 1627. A review of Essex County records shows that Bredda, of that spelling, was a rare name. There were other names which bore some phonetic similarity to Bredda, depending on the pronunciation of the speaker: Bird, Brett, Breede, Brede, and Bredge. The fact that surname spelling varied widely at that time and often followed the whim of the writer leaves Alice's family name unclear.

There were two marriages in Felsted which might have produced Alice. The first was on 13 Nov 1599 between Charles Breede and Anne Purcas. The other was on 15 May 1603 between John Bredge and Anne Brede. There is no record that any of these people died at Felsted, raising the possibility that, like Valentine's family, they may have removed to Chemsford.
