John Prentis came to America with his parents aboard the Lyon in 1631. With his parents, he lived in Boston the first year, then moved to Roxbury in 1632 at the age of four. John was about five years old when his father, Valentine, died, and about six when his mother married John Watson, who had immigrated in 1632 on the Lyon. By the time he was 16 in 1644, John had four stepbrothers: John, Edmund, Joshua and Caleb. He also had two stepsisters: Dorcas and Mary Watson. His home adjoined that of the Chandlers in what was, in 1878, the southerly corner of Bartlett and Washington Streets.
