Punahou started in 1841 by Rev. Daniel Dole. In 1854 Rev. Beckwith became the first
President of Oahu College. (Oahu college seems to have been created to broaden and
strengthen the educational scheme of Punahou School. It was called Oahu college from
1853-1934 when the name was changed back to Punahou School.) In 1909 Albert F. Judd was
the Secretary of the Trustees of The Oahu College. He sent his condolences to Mrs. Hair
in Makawao, Maui.
Rev. Beckwith was called to be the first pastor of Central Union Church in Honolulu
when the Bethel Union Church and the Fort Street Church merged in 1887. They physically
moved from the Fort Street Church into their new church in 1891.
In 1909 Rev. Edward Bater Turner was the pastor of Makawao Union Church.
Rev. Beckwith had three brothers (David, Maurice, George) and one sister (Martha).
George came to help his brother teach at the Royal School in 1853.
He met his wife Caroline P. Armstrong, a missionary daughter, in Massachusetts and married
her in Honlulu in 1853. She was an invalid all her 52 years of married life. They had
five children and two lived to adulthood. Frank was the oldest, born 1854. He died in
1885. He resigned, for health reasons, as President of Punahou in 1859.
The Honorable H. P. Baldwin wrote that next to his father and father Alexander that
Dr. E.G. Beckwith exercised the greatest influence over him, for good, in his life.
The Evangelical Association of Maui, Molokai and Lanai expressed condolences to Mrs.
M.B. Hair. The Hawaiian Board (Board of the Hawaiian Evangelical Association) expressed
their condolences to Mrs. M.B. Hair.

It is interesting that George 1764-1842 was a Deacon in Great Barrington
Church from about 1811 to 1842. Then his son Eratus served as Deacon from
1845-1873. Then his son Daniel W. served as Deacon from 1864-1911. For
half of the church's 200 year history a Beckwith held this position.
Three of Erastus' children went to Hawaii. George taught at the Royal
School and at Punahou and developed a plantation in Haiku, Maui. George's
daughter, Martha, was noted for her book, Hawaiian Mythology, 1970.
