Some Duncan Families of Eastern Tennessee Before 1800 - Section I, Continued

10.  Robert Duncan, born about 1751; in Surry Co. NC 1771 and 1774 in a separate household; died after 1776 when he was named in his father's will.

If this Robert died by 1782 in Sullivan Co. TN, this cannot be the Robert Duncan who was in Christian's Regiment of Militia, Territory South of the River Ohio, as a private in the Company commanded by James Gregg in Sullivan County, from Sept. 1 to Dec. 3, 1793. (Natnl. Archives Record #147, Service 1784-1811, card numbers 43202463, 43202520; from Stuart Duncan.) See Robert Duncan (7.4.), son of Rice.

This may be the Robert Duncan whose orphaned son Charles was granted land 24 Oct. 1782 on the south fork of Horse Creek next to land of Isaac Titsworth in Sullivan Co. TN (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 1, pg. 17).

--   Isaac Titsworth and his son Isaac were also in Surry Co. NC in 1774 on the same tax list as Marshall Duncan's family. Thomas Titsworth Sr. had a grant #188 in 1783 from NC for land on Horse Creek, joining John Mullins line, Isaac Titsworth, and Marshall Duncan's branch (5.) (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 1, pg. 169; from "Watauga Assn. of Genealogists Bulletin," Vol. 2, 1973, from Alice Duncan). On 5 Oct. 1789 Isaac Titsworth sold one parcel of land on the Fall Branch of Horse Creek on Charles Duncans orphans line to William Berry, and another parcel on Horse Creek on Charles Duncans orphans line to Thomas Vincent 5 Oct. 1789 (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 1, pg. 385, 386). John Vincent in his will dated 7 May 1857 (Sullivan Co. TN Will Book 1, pg. 101) mentioned his land on Duncans orphans old line which was also on the east bank of the Fall Branch and on John Duncan's old line. Apparently Isaac Titsworth owned land between that of Robert Duncan's son Charles (10.1.) and that of John Duncan (1.).

Son of Robert Duncan of Sullivan Co. TN:

10.1.  Charles Duncan, born before 1782; granted land as the son of Robert Duncan decd., in Sullivan Co. TN 24 Oct. 1782 (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 1, pg. 17); in Green Co. KY by 8 Nov. 1799 when he sold his land in Sullivan Co. TN witnessed by George Vincent and William Stevenson (Sullivan Co. TN Deed Book 3, pg. 324); in Green Co. KY 1800-1801 (tax lists); not identified later.

11.  James Duncan, born about 1755 (1755-60); married Ava or Avey (Avarilla?) or Ara Shelton (Watkins Bible, see 11.1.) about 1774 (tax list); died Salisbury Twp., Sangamon Co. IL, probably after 1840 (census of his son Marshall 11.3.; 1891 "Portrait and Biographical Album of Sangamon Co. IL", pg. 758-60, from Mrs. Sue Monaghan). Ava may have been named Avarilla, and her granddaughter Avarilla (11.2.11.) named after her. Ava was born 1755-60 (census) and died 1834-40 (deed, census).

James was in a separate household in Surry Co. NC in 1774, but not in 1772 (tax lists); in Surry Co. NC 1786 (State Census pg. 147) with 2 sons and 4 daughters. He bought 184 acres on Snow Creek in 1787 from Henry Tillery (Surry Co. NC Deed Book C, pg. 391), and sold it in 1798 (Stokes Co. NC Book 3, pg. 167). Stokes Co. was formed 1789 from Surry Co. NC. He was in Stokes Co. NC in 1790 (pg. 179, 1 male over 21, 3 males under 21, 6 females) and 1800 (pg. 587, he and wife age 26 to 45, 2 sons 16 to 26, 1 son 10 to 16, and 1 son under 10; 1 daughter 10 to 16, and 3 daughters under 10). In 1793 and 1795 he bought additional land on Snow Creek from John Shelton Sr. (Stokes Co. NC Deed Book 1, pg. 334, and Book 3, pg. 167). In 1801, he bought more land on Snow Creek from John Shelton of Fayette Co. KY, witnessed by Rice Duncan (11.2.) (Stokes Co. NC Deed Book 4, pg. 12).

James moved to Adair Co. KY by 1804 (Stokes Co. NC Deed Book 4, pg. 481); he was in Adair Co. (later Russell Co. after 1826) KY 1803-1833 on Crocus Creek (tax lists; Adair Co. KY Deed Book A, pg. 220; Russell Co. KY Deed Book C, pg. 170). He was in Adair Co. KY in 1810 with his son John (pg. 6); he was there in 1820 (pg. 16) and in Russell Co. KY 1830 (pg. 108).

He moved to Sangamon Co. IL by 1840 when he lived with son Marshall (11.3.) (pg. 27). He accompanied his son Marshall to Menard Co. IL (1891 "Portrait and Biographical Album of Sangamon Co. IL" by Chapman Bros., pg. 758-60). Menard Co. IL was formed 1839 from Sangamon Co. IL.

The following are probably children of James, but there is NO PROOF for all:

11.1.  Mary Duncan, daughter of James Duncan and Ava Shelton; married Henry Watkins. (Watkins Family Bible gave Mary Duncan's parents' names, data sent by Yvonne Clark of NY (address not included here); her line; all data from Yvonne Clark). Henry Watkins was born about 1764, they married about 1790, and moved to Cumberland Co. KY about 1810 (census); in Jessamine Co. KY after 1816 (tax list, from Yvonne Clark); to Clay Co. MO. IL Oct. 1837 ("Early Settlers"); in Salisbury Twp. Sangamon Co. IL in 1840 (pg. 42), 1850 (pg. 246) and 1860 (pg. 770).

Children of Rice Duncan included 10 daughters and 2 sons, five of whom were born in KY (1891 "Portrait and Biographical Album of Sangamon Co. IL", pg. 251). Ten are identified in "Early Settlers":

11.2.1.  Delilah Duncan, born 20 Nov. 1805 KY; married A. Buchanan; had 12 children; moved to Texas in 1845 and Mr. Buchanan died soon after ("Early Settlers"). The marriage record has not been found.

11.2.9.  Betsy F. Duncan, born 3 July 1825; married William Dorrell; lived in Menard Co. IL. ("Early Settlers"). One Henrietta L. Duncan married James W. Dorrell on 29 Nov. 1838 in Sangamon Co. IL; one Jane Duncan married William Dorrell on 29 Feb. 1844 in Sangamon Co. IL.

11.2.10.  Ella Ann Duncan, born 1 June 1827; lived with her parents in Sangamon Co. IL 1850 (pg. 246); married Samuel Coleman on 16 Nov. 1852 in Sangamon Co. IL ("Eli Ann"); both Ella and Samuel died before 1874, leaving one child. ("Early Settlers").

11.2.10.1.  L. Coleman, a son, born 1853 IL; in 1860 Sangamon Co. IL (pg. 770) in household of Rice Duncan (11.2.).

11.2.11.  Avarilla Duncan, born 8 Feb. 1831; lived with her parents in Sangamon Co. IL 1850 (pg. 246, "Ara"); married Lemuel Miller on 8 Dec. 1853 in Sangamon Co. IL (Avarilla on the marriage record); had 2 children and died before 1874 ("Avarilla" in the 1876 "Early Settlers").

11.3.  Marshall Duncan, born 1783-84 (1876 "Early Settlers of Sangamon County" by Powers, pg. 270-1; age 60 in 1850 census) in Stokes Co. NC, a brother of Rice and John; married 1st, wife unknown, about 1806 in Cumberland Co. KY; married 2nd Hannah Miller about 1820 or 1821 in Sangamon Co. IL ("Early Settlers"); died fall of 1858 in Salisbury Twp. Sangamon Co. IL ("Early Settlers"). Hannah was born 1800 KY, the daughter of John Miller; she lived in Iowa with her children in 1874 ("Early Settlers"). The International Genealogical Index (IGI) for Marshall's son William T.H. Duncan (11.3.2.) gave the name of William T.H. Duncan's mother as a Miss -------- Taylor; source not given.

Marshall was in Barren Co. KY 1804 (tax list); in Adair Co. KY 1809 and 1812-1821 (tax lists) but not located on the 1810 or 1820 census; he was a chain carrier in a survey for James Miller on 2 Jan. 1819 in Cumberland Co. KY ("Cumberland County Survey Records" by Butler and Smith, 1975, pg. 112). He moved to Menard (formed 1839 from Sangamon) Co. IL about 1821 ("Early Settlers"); in Sangamon Co. IL 1830 (pg. 149 "Michael") and 1840 (pg. 27); in Menard Co. IL 1850 (pg. 338).

It is possible that two of the children credited as sons of Marshall Duncan were adopted. On 2 Oct. 1809 the Adair County Court apprenticed William and James Thrasher, poor boys, to him for 18 years, 7 months and 14 days or until they became 21, to learn the hatters business (Adair Co. KY Deed Book B, pg. 281). William and James would have been about two and a half years old. It is also possible that they were the same age, since the court made no distinction in age. This means that William and James Thrasher would have been 21 on 16 May 1828, and were therefore born 16 May 1807, within six days of the dates of birth given for William T.H. Duncan and James T. Duncan. It seems probable that James T. Duncan (11.3.1.) was actually James Thrasher Duncan; and that William T.H. Duncan (11.3.2.) was actually William Thrasher H. Duncan. However, there is NO PROOF.

It is possible that further research in the court records of Adair Co. KY would name their mother, and possibly tax records might name other Thrasher relatives. It is possible that Marshall Duncan had married their mother; he must have had a woman in his household for the court to have given him the care of two small boys a little over 2 years old.

One Marshall Duncan was in Belleville, St. Clair Co. IL 1818 and 1819 (1881 "History of St. Clair Co. IL", pg. 72, 84, 186; from Mrs. Sue Monaghan) but it is unknown if this was the same Marshall Duncan who was also on the tax lists in Adair Co. KY in 1818 and 1819.

Children of Marshall Duncan ("Early Settlers" said they had 8 children and gave information on 5 of them):

11.3.1.  James T. Duncan, a twin, born 10 May 1807 Cumberland Co. KY; married Mary "Polly" Penny on 27 Aug. 1829 ("Early Settlers") or 3 Sept. 1829 (marriage record) in Sangamon Co. IL; died 9 July 1856. Mary Penny was born 6 Dec. 1809 Pope Co. IL, died after 1874. They were in Sangamon Co. IL 1830 (pg. 149), 1840 (pg. 27), and 1850 (pg. 239). This may be James Thrasher Duncan, possibly adopted. They had 9 living children ("Early Settlers"):

11.3.1.1.  Hester A. Duncan, born 1830 IL; married John Gramlish, and resided in Salisbury township in 1874 ("Early Settlers"). She lived with her parents in 1850 in Sangamon Co. IL census. No record has been found of a marriage to John Gramlish; however, Hester Ann Duncan married John Hohimer on 25 Aug. 1853 in Sangamon Co. IL; she is buried in the Salisbury Cemetery, born 1830, died 1918 ("Salisbury Township Cemeteries" by Sangamon Co. Gen. Soc., from Sue Monaghan). John Hohimer (b. 1832) was living with his parents William and Mica Hohimer in 1850 Menard Co. IL (pg. 340). See also Arminda Duncan (11.2.6.) married William Hohimer, and Ave Duncan (11.3.6.) married Isaac Hohimer.

11.3.1.2.  Francis M. Duncan, born 1 Nov. 1831 (tombstone); married Martha J. Yoakum on 31 Dec. 1852 in Sangamon Co. IL; died 18 June 1916. Martha was born 14 Oct. 1831, died 19 Aug. 19?4; both are buried in the Salisbury Cemetery ("Salisbury Township Cemeteries" by Sangamon Co. Gen. Soc., from Sue Monaghan).                   11.3.1.4.  John W. Duncan, born 1837 IL, died in Iowa in 1869, aged 32 years.

11.3.1.5.  Franklin W. Duncan, born 1838 IL; married Martha Irwin on 14 Jan. 1864 in Sangamon Co. IL; had five children, and lived in Menard Co. in 1874. Martha was the daughter of Robert S. Irwin and Cynthia Duncan (11.5.5.).

11.3.1.6.  James T. Duncan Jr., born 1842 IL; married Olive Douglas who died leaving one child; he and his child lived in Salisbury township in 1874.

11.3.1.7.  Sylvester T. Duncan, born 1844 IL; unmarried in 1874 and resided at Salisbury.

11.3.1.8.  Rachel Duncan, born 1847 IL; not listed in 1874 history.

11.3.1.9.  Matilda Duncan, married James Potter, had four children, and lived in Menard Co. in 1874.

11.3.1.10.  William P. Duncan, lived with his mother in 1874.

11.3.2.  William T.H. Duncan, a twin, born 10 May 1807 Cumberland Co. KY; married Eve Miller on 3 Dec. 1831 in Sangamon Co. IL (marriage record for "Wm. D." Duncan and "An" Miller); died 20 Oct. 1862 Sangamon Co. IL ("Early Settlers"). Eve Miller was born 11 Dec. 1813, daughter of Solomon Miller and Nancy Antle ("Early Settlers"); died 17 April 1895. Both are buried in the Salisbury Cemetery ("Salisbury Township Cemeteries" by Sangamon Co. Gen. Soc., from Sue Monaghan). William T.H. fought in the Black Hawk War 1829-1832 (1891 "Portrait and Biographical Album of Sangamon Co. IL", pg. 758-60). The family was in Sangamon Co. IL 1840 (pg. 26), 1850 (pg. 245), and 1860 (pg. 768). This may be William Thrasher H. Duncan, possibly adopted; see note under Marshall Duncan (11.3.).       11.4.  Sarah Duncan, daughter of James, born about 1784 Stokes Co. NC; married Terry Bradley (b. 1784-94) on 30 Oct. 1806 in Adair Co. KY; in Cumberland Co. KY 1810 (pg. 172); not identified later. This may be the Sarah Bradley in 1850 Clark Co. KY (pg. 31) as household #437, Sarah Bradley 58 KY, and Delila 21, Milly M. 18, Dennis W. 15, John H. 18, Sarah M. 8 KY and Hannah B. 24 KY; next door to #436 Samuel Bradley 40 KY, Elizabeth 36 KY & ch. There is absolutely NO PROOF. The family has not been traced.

11.5.  John Duncan, born about 1787 Stokes Co. NC, a brother of Rice and Marshall; married Sally Miller on 12 Aug. 1810 in Adair Co. KY; died 1863 (1876 "Early Settlers of Sangamon Co. IL" by Power, pg. 271-2). Sally was born 1782 KY, daughter of John Miller (marriage bond); she died Nov. 1850 in Sangamon Co. IL ("Early Settlers"). John was in Adair Co. KY 1810 (pg. 6) with his parents (over 45) with him; in Adair Co. KY 1816-1819 (tax lists); in Cumberland Co. KY 1820 (pg. 156); moved to Sangamon Co. IL 1827 ("Early Settlers"); in Sangamon Co. IL census in 1830 (pg. 149); in Morgan Co. IL in 1840 (pg. 392); in Sangamon Co. IL in 1850 (pg. 245) and 1860 (pg. 769) with E. Davis (male) born 1810 KY and his children E.A. (f) 22 and S.A. (m) 18 IL. John Duncan and his wife Sarah were named in several deeds in Menard Co. IL as late as 1846 (A-86, A-297, A-384, 2-107, and 3-73); some of these deeds were transcribed from the books of Sangamon Co. after Menard Co. was formed from it in 1839.

He had six sons and six daughters; the first six children were born in Kentucky and the second six in Illinois; only three of the children resided in Sangamon Co. IL ("Early Settlers" pg. 271). The following may be his children:

11.5.1.  Elizabeth Duncan; married William Davis on 8 Dec. 1831 in Sangamon Co. IL; NO PROOF of parents. William was the son of John Davies and Catharine Antle and brother of John Davis who married Mary Duncan (11.5.4.); William and Elizabeth both died and left two married children in Salisbury, Sangamon Co. IL ("Early Settlers" does not list her parents). The 1820 census for John Duncan (11.5.) in Cumberland Co. KY showed one daughter age 10; therefore his oldest daughter may have been born early in 1811.

11.5.2.  Robert Duncan, born 1812 KY; married 1st, wife unknown, about 1836 in IL; married 2nd Mrs. Priscilla Cross (b. 1812 NC) on 31 Oct. 1847 in Sangamon Co. IL; in Menard Co. IL in 1840 (pg. 304); in Sangamon Co. IL 1850 (pg. 168) as the household of Robert Duncan 38 KY, Prucilla 36 NC, and Richard Cross 12, William 9, John 7, and Marg. 5 all b. IL; and John Duncan 13, Harrison 11, Anderson 8, Amelia 6, and Marion 3/12 all b. IL; and Arey (f) Crider 54 KY. There is NO PROOF he was the son of John, but it is probable that Arey Crider was his aunt (11.7.).

--   One Robert Duncan married Rachel Martin, age 18, on 15 March 1835 in Schuyler Co. IL, married by Jacob Clark. No Robert Duncan appears on the census there in 1840 and it is unknown if this Robert Duncan has anything to do with descendants of Marshall Duncan the Elder.

Children of Robert Duncan who married Priscilla Cross, from census:

11.5.2.1.  John Duncan, born 1837 IL.

11.5.2.2.  Harrison Duncan, born 1839 IL.

11.5.2.3.  Anderson Duncan, born 1842 IL.

11.5.2.4.  Amelia Duncan, born 1844 IL.

11.5.2.5.  Marion Duncan, born 1850 IL.

11.5.3.  Barbara Duncan, born 15 March 1812 in Cumberland Co. KY ("Early Settlers"); her marriage to Reuben Buchanan was recorded on 3 Dec. 1833 in Sangamon Co. IL; NO PROOF of parents. "Early Settlers" said she was the daughter or step-daughter of Solomon Miller, but Solomon Miller married Nancy A. Antle, dau. of Mary or Molly Antle, on 13 Aug. 1813 in Adair Co. KY (marriage records). Reuben Buchanan was born 20 March 1809 in Woodford Co. KY; the Buchanan family moved to Morgan Co. IL in 1819 or 1820; Reuben moved to Sangamon Co. IL in 1834; died 14 Nov. 1861 in Springfield ("Early Settlers"). They had 4 children; 3 died young. Barbara lived with her son-in-law Lafayette Smith in Springfield in 1874.

11.5.3.1.  Harriet A. Buchanan, born 3 Dec. 1838 at Salisbury, Sangamon Co. IL; married Lafayette Smith on 1 Jan. 1857, in Springfield ("Early Settlers"). "Early Settlers" had more info on this family, not extracted.

11.5.4.  Mary "Polly" Duncan, born 1815 KY, daughter of John ("Early Settlers" pg. 271); married John Davies on 14 Nov. 1834 in Sangamon Co. IL; in Sangamon Co. IL 1850 (pg. 246). John was born 23 July 1815 in Adair Co. KY, son of John Davies and Catharine Antle, and brother of William Davies who married Elizabeth Duncan (11.5.1.). ("Early Settlers"). Children from 1850 census:

11.5.4.1.  Madison Davies, born 1839 IL.

11.5.4.2.  Samantha Davies, born 1841 IL.

11.5.4.3.  Morris Davies, born 1843 IL.

11.5.4.4.  Cynthia Davies, born 1846 IL.

11.5.5.  Anderson Duncan, born 1815 KY; married Cynthia A. Clopton on 2 Aug. 1838 in Sangamon Co. IL; in Menard Co. IL in 1840 (pg. 303), 1850 (pg. 337, "A." 35 KY, "C.A." 32 KY), and 1860 (pg. 761, he age 45, she age 40). There is NO PROOF that he was the son of John (11.4.) other than proximity in location of marriage and residence in 1840-1860. Children on the 1850 and 1860 census:

11.5.5.1.  Lucy Jane Duncan, born 1842 IL.

                  11.5.5.2.  Almira F. Duncan, born 1845 IL.

                  11.5.5.3.  Sarah E. Duncan, born 1846 IL.

                  11.5.5.4.  Mary E. Duncan, born 1852 IL.

                  11.5.5.5.  Thomas J. Duncan, born 1856 IL.

11.5.6.  Cynthia Duncan, born 18 Aug. 1818 Adair Co. KY; married Robert Simpson Irwin of Salisbury Twp. on 19 Jan. 1837 in Sangamon Co. IL; died 6 April 1872 in Salisbury Twp. Robert was born 14 Nov. 1813 in Cabarras Co. NC, son of William Irwin and Margaret Purviance and brother of John Irwin who married Minerva Duncan (11.3.5.); Robert died 3 May 1874 in Salisbury Twp. They had ten children. Children were given in 1876 "Early Settlers" but not extracted. (1876 "Early Settlers"; data from and line of Mrs. Sue Naschinski Monaghan of IL (address not included here)).

11.5.7.  Arminda Duncan, born 14 Feb. 1828 Sangamon Co. IL, daughter of John (1876 "Early Settlers" pg. 271); married Frederick Luchsinger on 8 Jan. 1849 in Sangamon Co. IL; lived in Sangamon Co. IL 1874. Frederick was born 2 April 1824 in Canton Glarus, Switzerland ("Early Settlers" pg. 271). There is a marker in the Salisbury Cemetery for Fred Cline Lushinger, Co. H, US Mtd. Rifles, Mexican War (no dates) ("Salisbury Township Cemeteries" by Sangamon Co. Gen. Soc., from Sue Monaghan).

11.5.8.  John Duncan, born 1831 IL, son of John (1876 "Early Settlers" pg. 271); married Nancy Jane Kane (or Cane) who was under age, on 2 June 1860 in Sangamon Co. IL; lived in Sangamon Co. IL in 1874 ("Early Settlers" pg. 271). He lived with his parents in Sangamon Co. IL 1850 (pg. 245).

11.5.9.  James Duncan, born 1833 IL; lived with his parents in Sangamon Co. IL 1850 (pg. 245).

11.5.10.  Ellen Duncan, born 1835 IL; lived with her parents in Sangamon Co. IL 1850 (pg. 245).

11.7.  Avey (Avarilla?) Duncan, born 1796 KY (1850 census), daughter of James Duncan, born 1794-1800 Stokes Co. NC; married Martin Grider or Crider on 6 Nov. 1814 in Adair Co. KY, witness Adam Jackman (11.9.); lived on Crocus Creek next to James Duncan in Adair Co. KY 1820 (pg. 22). On 15 Oct. 1821, Martin Gridee and his wife Avy sold to James Duncan Jr. (11.6.), all of Adair Co., land in Adair and Cumberland Co. KY on the east fork of Crocus joining James Duncan Sr.'s line. (Adair Co. KY Deed Book E, pg. 581)

--   One Martin Grider was in Monroe Co. KY 1850 (pg. 442), b. 1800 KY, wife Mary b. 1800 TN and children 10 to 20, but he was too young to be the same Martin Grider who married in 1814. There was a Martin Grider Sr. (he and wife age 70-80) and Martin Grider Jr. (age 20-30 or 30-40, no wife) in 1830 Cumberland Co. KY (pg. 153), but no Martin Jr. in 1840. One Martin Grider died in 1838 in Cumberland Co. KY; his inventory was dated 21 Sept. 1838 (Cumberland Co. KY Probate Book C, pg. 362), but no effort has been made to trace his heirs through deeds.

An Arey Crider age 54 b. KY lived with Robert Duncan in 1850 in Sangamon Co. IL (pg. 168) and it is probable that this was the same Avey (Arey?) Duncan. There is NO PROOF since this family has not been traced.

11.8.  Cynthia Duncan, born May 1800 NC; married Birch Vermillion, born 1808 (data from and line of Mrs. Jennifer Blase Richardson). Mrs. Richardson said the research was done by her Cousin Ruth, but has not been proved. Cynthia is said to be the daughter of James Duncan and wife Avarilla Rutherford. Cynthia was in Sangamon Co. IL in 1850 (pg. 238) as the household of Cynthia Vermillion 50 NC, and Pinckney (m) 18 KY, Sidney 16 KY, Martha 14, Susana 10, and Hairrett 7 IL, and Wm. Duncan 17 TN (11.3.3.1.) and Ely Coffee 22 KY. Children from census:

11.8.1.  Pinckney Dryden Vermillion, born 1 May 1832 Louisville, KY; married Sarah Jane Slinker on 22 Sept. 1853; died 9 July 1904 Carthage, MO. Sarah Jane was born 24 June 1830 Springfield, IL. (line of Mrs. Jennifer Richardson of MO (address not included here)).

11.8.2.  Sidney Vermillion, born 1834 KY.

11.8.3.  Martha Vermillion, born 1836 IL.

11.8.4.  Susana Vermillion, born 1840 IL.

11.8.5.  Harriet Vermillion, born 1843 IL.

11.9.  Susannah Duncan, born 1800-1804, married Adam Jackman on 4 Feb. 1822 in Adair Co. KY. Adam Jackman witnessed the marriage of Avey Duncan (11.7.) to Martin Grider in 1814. The family was in Russell Co. KY census in 1830 (pg. 112) with a male age 30 to 40, a female age 20 to 30, and a son under age 5. The family was there in 1840 (pg. 24) with 4 more sons and 2 more daughters; and in 1850 Russell Co. KY (pg. 227) as Adam Jackman Sr. 61 VA, Elizabeth 44 KY, John R. 19, Francis M. 18, Joseph W. 15, Melissa 12, Sarah J. 10, Fetney (female) 8, Mark A. 6, Frances C. 2, all b. KY. It appears that Susannah may have died, perhaps by 1826, and Adam may have remarried about 1828 and had his first son by 1830, but there is NO PROOF since this family has not been traced. No marriage has yet been found for Adam Jackman in Russell Co. KY after it's formation in 1826.

11.10.  Another son may be George Duncan, born 1805 KY; in Russell Co. KY 1829-1838 (tax lists); married 1st Faney Stanton on 10 Feb. 1833 in Russell Co. KY; in Russell Co. KY 1840 (pg. 26, no adult female); married 2nd Susan Eden (b. 1820 KY) on 31 May 1842 in Russell Co. KY; in Russell Co. KY 1850 (pg. 236). Faney Stanton died before 1840; she may have been the daughter of William Stanton who was in Russell Co. KY 1850 (pg. 240) as the household of William Stanton 80 VA, Phebe 70 VA, various Stanton children or grandchildren, and three Duncan children. However, there is NO PROOF that this George Duncan is related to James Duncan (11.) in any way, other than proximity in the 1850 census. Children from census:

11.10.1.  Pleasant T. Duncan, born 1834-35 KY; listed in both George Duncan's household and Wm. Stanton's household in 1850.

11.10.2.  Eliza Jane Duncan, born 1835-37 KY; listed in both George Duncan's household and Wm. Stanton's household in 1850.

11.10.3.  John G.C. Duncan, born 1840 KY; listed only in Wm. Stanton's household in 1850.

11.10.4.  Sally Ann Duncan, born 1842 KY.

            11.10.5.  Mary F. Duncan, born 1844 KY.

11.10.6.  Peter Duncan, born 1845 KY.

11.10.7.  Narcissa Duncan, born 1847 KY.

11.11.  Another son may be William Duncan who married Jane Norphleet on 13 Oct. 1832 in Russell Co. KY; he was not in Russell Co. KY tax lists nor identified in 1840 or 1850 census. Again, there is NO PROOF; the only reason it is suggested is that they were in the same county.
