Some Duncan Families of Eastern Tennessee Before 1800 - Section I, Continued

9.  Joseph Duncan, born about 1749; listed separately in 1772 Surry Co. NC tax lists; married Susannah -------- (Warren Co. KY Deed Book F6, pg. 225); in Simon Bean's Company, Sevier's Regiment, King's Mountain Men of TN in 1778. Joseph and John Duncan (1.) both were listed as residing in Washington or Sullivan Counties, TN in 1781-1783, having fought in the revolution from NC. ("Tennessee Soldiers in the Revolution" by Allen).

Joseph Duncans in Washington Co. TN:

--   A Joseph Duncan and a James Duncan (see as Sec. III, 5.) had land on Boones Creek adjoining Uriah Hunt in 1783 (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 1, pg. 120) when Uriah Hunt sold 119 acres to William Young. In 1785, William Young of the 96th District, SC, sold 300 acres on Boones Creek to Nathaniel Davis which adjoined an entry originally of Joseph Duncan's but by then of Mark Mitchell's (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 3, pg. 167). However, see the comments under Joseph Duncan (Sec. III, 4.), a possible brother of John, Andrew and Anthony.

--   A Joseph Duncan had Grant #1070 of 300 acres on Boone's Creek on 1 Jan. 1794, indexed as 6 Feb. 1795 (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 6, pg. 591), but there is no record of the disposition of this land.

--   A Joseph Duncan had a land grant of 200 acres on the west side of Knob Creek, adjoining John Jeib's or Jile's land, on 17 Nov. 1790 (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 6, pg. 506), but no record has yet been found of the sale of this land. Charles Duncan (8.) also had land on Knob Creek.

Joseph Duncan, wife Susannah, of Washington Co. TN, is believed to be 9. above since he had a wife Susannah, as did Joseph of Warren Co. KY who had a son Rice Duncan. Also, this Joseph went to SC in an area where a Joseph Duncan deeded land to a Rice Duncan (see as 9.1. below).

Joseph Duncan had a patent on 19 Nov. 1775 for 320 acres on the first eastern branch of Boons Creek adjoining John Calliham, William Bean, and John Russell, entered by Duncan on 6 May 1775 and surveyed by William B. Smith ("Land Records of Washington Co. Book 1", pg. 32, from Charles Gordon from personal visit to Washington Co. TN Courthouse; and from Watauga Purchase Book, pg. 32, from Judy Player).

Joseph Duncan and wife Susannah had NC Grant #482 for 320 acres on the south branch of Boone's Creek on 10 Nov. 1784, and sold this land to James Melvin on 19 Jan. 1789 while of "Granville County, South Carolina" (Washington Co. TN Deed Book 4, pg. 51, 52); one Joseph Duncan is said to have been from Pittsylvania Co. VA ("Dawn of TN Valley and TN History" by Williams, pg. 433, from Bobbie McDowell; do not have actual reference). Old Granville District in SC was discontinued in 1785, and had consisted of a strip along the GA border, later being contained partly in Anderson and Pendleton Cos. SC.

Joseph Duncan was in Pendleton Co. SC, believed to be 9. above since he was connected to a Rice Duncan who would be 9.1.

Joseph Duncan had a grant from SC on 6 Feb. 1786 for 632 acres in Dist. 96 on 12 Mile River; plat certified 6 May 1785 (SC Grant Book 6, pg. 533). Joseph Duncan was in Pendleton Co. SC in 1790 (pg. 83) with 2 males over 21, 4 males under 21, and 2 females. Joseph had a second grant from SC on 2 Jan. 1792 under the acts of 19 Feb. 1791 for 355 acres surveyed for him 5 Aug. 1791 in Dist. 96, on 12 Mile River, adjoining his other land (SC Class 2 Grant Book 29, pg. 292).

On 30 April 1798 Joseph Duncan sold 185 acres on 12 Mile River to Rice Duncan (9.1.) for 50 pounds. ("Pendleton District SC Deeds 1790-1806", pg. 169, from Evelyn Sigler; Anderson Co. SC Deed Book C, pg. 403). Rice Duncan of Pendleton Dist. SC sold this land on 3 Oct. 1799 to James Powell, witness David Murphree and Daniel Reid (Anderson Co. SC Deed Book F, pg. 177). See also Daniel Reed in Warren Co. KY in 1805 (9.12.).

On 21 April 1798 Joseph Duncan sold 120 acres on Wolf Creek to Jess Tatum, and on 2 May 1798 he sold 130 acres, part of his 1786 grant, to Edward Tatum (Anderson Co. SC Deed Book C, pg. 427, 427; "1800 Census of Pendleton Dist. SC" by William C. Stewart, 1963, under #496 and on pg. 19). On 7 Dec. 1797, Joseph had sold 374 acres to Solomon Murphee, witnessed by James Jett and others ("Pendleton District SC Deeds 1790-1806", pg. 181, from Evelyn Sigler). On 23 April 1798 he sold 50 acres on Wolf Creek of 12 Mile River to Joseph Harwood (Anderson Co. SC Deed Book I, pg. 92). On 10 March 1801 Joseph Duncan of Pendleton Co. SC sold 100 acres on 12 Mile River to James Powell, witness David Murphree and Daniel Reid (Anderson Co. SC Deed Book F, pg. 176).

Joseph Duncan had a third grant from SC on 1 Jan. 1798 for 268 acres surveyed 2 Dec. 1797 in Washington Dist., Pendleton Co., on both sides of Wolf Creek on the waters of 12 Mile River, adjoining William Bynum, Levi Murphree, James Jett, and his other land; the plat was certified 15 Dec. 1797 (SC Class 2 Grant Book 44, pg. 110). This land was sold 4 May 1798 by Joseph Duncan to Charles Durham, both of Pendleton District SC; the survey by James Jell (or Jett) was recorded 23 April 1823 and the deed was recorded 25 July 1831, both in Pickens Co. SC (Deed Book B1, pg. 45, 47).

--   One Joseph Duncan bought 242 acres which had been granted Sutton Green in 1787, and sold it in 1793 to George Wilson ("Pendleton District SC Deeds 1790-1806", pg. 115, from Evelyn Sigler). It is unknown if this was the same Joseph Duncan.

--   One Joseph Duncan was in Hawkins Co. TN 3 Nov. 1796 when he witnessed a deed of William Duncan (3.) (Stokes Co. NC Deed Book 3, pg. 58). This might have been William's brother, Joseph Duncan (9.).

The 1825 will of Roseannah Stevenson, widow of John Duncan (1.), named Rice Duncan Jr. and Marvel Duncan, sons of Joseph Duncan Sen. Only two Marvel Duncans have been located. One Marvel was born 1824 (7.1.1.1.), the son of another Joseph (7.1.1.), but was much too young to be the Marvel referred to in the 1825 will. The other was in Warren (later Allen) Co. KY and is listed below as (9.2.). Both areas also have Rice Duncans (7.2.; 7.3.8.; and 9.1.).

Joseph Duncan had a grant of 200 acres on Trammel's Fork in Warren Co. KY 30 March 1800 ("The Kentucky Land Grants" by Jilson); in 1813 Joseph and Susannah Duncan deeded to Ashley Duncan for five cents the 200 acres on Trammel's Fork of Drake Creek, witnessed by Twitty Pace, Emry Duncan, and Alexander Graham (Warren Co. KY Deed Book F6, pg. 225). Joseph was a witness to an 1805 deed from George Larance (Lawrence?) to Joshua Reeder (see 9.12.) for land on S. Sulphur Fork of Drake's Creek (Warren Co. KY Deed Book 2B, pg. 281). Joseph was in Warren Co. KY 1800-1813 (tax lists; 1810 census pg. 282); in Allen Co. KY 1815-1816; in Warren Co. KY 1817-1819; in Simpson Co. KY 1819-1821 (tax lists; 1820 census pg. 24); and possibly in Allen Co. KY 1824-1828. Allen County was formed 1815 from Warren County; one area of Allen Co. was included in Simpson County's formation in 1819 but reverted to Allen Co. in 1822.

One Joseph Duncan was deceased by 1828, and Lewis Reeder was his agent on Simpson Co. KY tax lists from 1828 to about 1842. The 1833 and 1834 tax lists in Simpson Co. KY listed Lewis Reeder for Joseph Duncan, decd, of Hickman Co. KY, with a town lot in Columbia. The tax lists occasionally listed Joseph and Zadock Duncan; in 1843 Lewis Reeder was listed for Mary Duncan, and in 1847 for Duncan heirs (Simpson Co. KY tax lists from Patrick W. Costigan, 3030 Quail Avenue North, Minneapolis, MN 55422).

Joseph's children probably included the following, but there is NO PROOF. In addition to Rice, Marvel, William and Prior on the 1810 census, he had three sons born 1784-94 and one son born 1794-1800, and either an unmarried daughter born 1784-94 or a daughter-in-law.

9.1.  Rice Duncan, born about 1771; married Jane -------- about 1790-92 (1972 "Wayne Co. MO" by Rose Fulton Cramer, pg. 493-4, for son Josiah (9.1.5.); this recent book does not give the original source for the statement that Josiah's parents were Rice and Jane Duncan); Rice had a land grant 7 July 1799 for 200 acres on the Sulphur and Middle Fork of Drake's Creek, Warren Co. KY ("The Kentucky Land Grants" by Jilson); he was in Warren Co. KY 1800-1813 (tax lists; 1810 census pg. 271); in Allen Co. KY 1815-1816; no later record. He had six children in 1810, two born before 1794, but only Allen and Josiah are definite; there is NO PROOF for the others:

9.1.1.  Allen Duncan, born 1 Oct. 1793 (Bible) KY; married Sarah Ann Boren on 8 Jan. 1813 in Warren Co. KY when he was under 21 and had the consent of his father Rice Duncan (marriage record); the family Bible has the marriage date as 14 Jan. 1813; died 24 July 1840 (Bible) in Madison Co. MO. Sarah was born 13 Dec. 1797 (Bible) SC; she was the daughter of William Boren who was born 1766 near Salisbury, NC (Rowan or Surry Co.) (Rev. Pension S-16652); died 13 April 1854 in Madison Co. MO. (Information from and line of Donald W. Duncan, 12620 C Pommarde, St. Louis, MO 63146) Allen was in Allen Co. KY 1815-1816 (tax lists); the family was in Madison Co. MO 1830 (pg. 348); and his widow Sarah was in Madison Co. MO 1850 (pg. 244); her father "William Brin" 84 NC, occupation "Rev. Sold." lived with her.

On 31 Aug. 1840, Mrs. Sarah Ann Duncan and Uriah Duncan petitioned for letters of administration on his estate in Madison Co. MO (Madison Co. MO Estate Papers, from Donald Duncan), naming his heirs as Sarah Ann Duncan (widow), Uriah Duncan, Vianna who married Finis Mann residing in Ripley Co. MO, Joseph Duncan, Rice A. Duncan, Vincent Duncan, Julia Ann Duncan, Mary Ann Duncan, Eliza Ann Duncan, and Martha Ann Duncan. The inventory of his estate included a note on Josiah Duncan (9.1.5.). Children (from info of Donald W. Duncan, and from the family Bible; see Appendix):

9.1.1.1.  Vianna Duncan, born 25 Dec. 1813; married Finas Mann on 5 March 1835 in Madison Co. MO, married by her father Allen Duncan; died 1850-54. Her name was given as Vianna in the Bible and Deanna on the marriage record (Madison Co. MO Marriages 1821-1850, from "MO Pioneers" Vol. 21, Dec. 1973; from Evelyn Sigler and Denzil Mauldin). The family lived in Ripley Co. MO in 1840. Daughter from Bible:

9.1.1.1.1.  Sara Ann Mann, born 7 Jan. 1836.

                  9.1.1.2.  Mathusa Duncan, born 4 Nov. 1815; died 2 March 1824.

9.1.1.3.  Uriah Duncan, born 1 Dec. 1817 KY; lived with his mother in 1850; married Rebecca M. Kelly on 16 May 1853; John Stansberry obtained Letters of Administration in Texas Co. MO on 16 Jan. 1866 on his estate ("MO Pioneers" Vol. 27, pg. 103). The family is indexed in Texas Co. MO in the 1860 census but has not been traced.

                  9.1.1.4.  William Duncan, born 5 March 1820; died 15 Oct. 1820.

                  9.1.1.5.  Joseph Duncan, born 6 Sept. 1821; died 14 Jan. 1848.

9.1.1.6.  Rice A. Duncan, born 1 July 1824 MO; married 1st Hannah Burcham on 26 Feb. 1845 at Fredericktown, Madison Co. MO; married 2nd Rebecca Emaline King on 23 Jan. 1853 at Fredericktown; died 16 Sept. 1894 at Madison Co. MO. Rebecca King was born 20 Sept. 1828 TN, daughter of James King and Nancy Tennison; died 5 April 1918 at Brunot, Wayne Co. MO. The family was in Iron Co. MO in 1860 (#984). Children from 1850 census (pg. 244) when he lived with his mother, 1860 census, children 3 to 8 from Bible, and later children from Donald W. Duncan (his line):

9.1.1.6.1.  Cordelia Duncan, born 1845-47 MO.

                        9.1.1.6.5.  unnamed daughter, born 16 Dec. 1856; died 22 Dec. 1856.

9.1.1.6.6.  Sarah Ann Duncan, born 15 April 1858 MO.

9.1.1.6.7.  Solomon Duncan, born 5 April 1860 MO.

9.1.1.6.8.  Pony Duncan, born 23 Feb. 1862 MO ("Rice" in the Bible).

9.1.1.6.9.  William B. Duncan, born July 1865 at Des Arc, Iron Co. MO; married Bertha Hickman on 27 July 1890; died 23 Aug. 1922. Bertha was born 27 July 1873 at Des Arc, MO, the daughter of Berle Taylor Hickman and "Asah" Axelene Ellen Clifton; died 10 May 1962 at Drop Mountain, WV.

9.1.1.6.10.  Susan Duncan, born Sept. 1866.

                        9.1.1.6.11.  Liza Adeline Duncan, born 11 May 1867; died 21 May 1952.

                        9.1.1.6.12.  Rice Duncan, born 1873.

                  9.1.1.7.  Vincent Duncan, born 26 Oct. 1826; died 13 Feb. 1843.

9.1.1.9.  Juliann Duncan, born 16 Oct. 1829 MO; lived with her mother in 1850 census.

9.1.1.10.  Maryann Duncan, born 21 Jan. 1832 MO; lived with her mother in 1850 census; married Harry Graham on 2 Sept. 1852. Children from Bible:

9.1.1.10.1.  Eliza Jane Graham, born 12 Jan. 1854.

9.1.1.11.  Eliza Ann Duncan, born 30 Dec. 1835; lived with her mother in 1850 census.

9.1.1.12.  Marthann Duncan, born 24 Jan. 1838; lived with her mother in 1850 census.

9.1.2.  Turner Duncan, born 1790-1800, may be another son. He was in MO by 1819, when he had a letter waiting for him at the Jackson post office in Cape Girardeau Co. MO on 30 Sept. 1819 and another on 1 July 1820 (published in the "MO Herald" newspaper, from "MO Pioneers" Vol. 3, 1968, pg. 43, from Evelyn Sigler and Denzil Mauldin). "Tavener" Dunkin was on the combined 1821-1823 tax lists in Cape Girardeau Co. MO ("MO Taxpayers 1819-1826" by Stanley). Turner Duncan was in Cape Girardeau Co. MO in 1830 (pg. 446); and in Butler Twp., Wayne Co. MO 1840 (pg. 225); he has not been located in 1850. There is NO PROOF Turner is the son of Rice Duncan (9.1.).

--   Butler Co. MO was formed in 1849 from Wayne Co. MO, and it was possibly his widow Mary who was in Butler Co. MO in 1850 (pg. 164) as the household of Mary Duncan 46 NC, Eliza 23, Thomas 17, Wiley 14, Cintha 12, Nancy 10, Martha 8, Minerva 6 all b. TN. This may be the Mary age 76 b. NC who was in Carroll Co. AR in 1880, living with her daughter Martha age 38 b. TN who had married Jonathan Black (#245). If this was his widow, the children must have been born in MO instead of TN. This family has not been traced.

9.1.3.  Susan Duncan, born 1801 NC?; married Vaincet? Faulkner born 1802 VA? (from Donald W. Duncan).

9.1.4.  Eli Duncan, born 1802 KY; came to MO in 1816; married Rebecca Johnson in 1821; died 1866 in MO. Rebecca was born 1805 in MO, died Sept. 1859 in Reynolds Co. MO, age 54 (1860 mortality schedule). They lived in Madison Co. MO until about 1829, then Wayne Co. MO, then 1839 moved to Ripley Co. MO for a year or so, then back to Madison Co. MO (1888 "History of Southeast MO, Counties of Ste. Genevieve, St. Francois, Perry, Cape Girardeau, Bollinger, Madison, New Madrid, Pemiscot, Dunklin, Scott, Mississippi, Stoddard, Butler, Wayne and Iron" by Goodspeed, pg. 1125, Wayne Co. for son Adam J. Duncan 9.1.4.1.). The family was in Wayne Co. MO in 1830 (pg. 41); Ripley Co. MO in 1840 (pg. 345), and Madison Co. MO in 1850 (pg. 231). There may have been another son, under age 5 in 1830 and age 5 to 10 in 1840, therefore born about 1830, but he is not identified.

9.1.4.1.  Adam J. Duncan, born 19 Dec. 1824 Madison Co. MO; lived with his parents in 1850; married Melvina Mann in 1851 in Wayne or Madison Co. MO; died 14 June 1905. Melvina was born 8 March 1838 (tombstone) or 1831 (history) in Wayne Co. MO, daughter of Andrew Mann and Susan Duncan; died 4 Sept. 1890. Both Adam J. and Melvina are buried in the Alwood Cemetery, Reynolds Co. MO (from Dorothy Davis Smith's index cards). They lived in that part of Madison Co. MO which became Iron Co. after it's division. It is unknown if Susan Duncan who married Andrew Mann by 1838 was related to the descendants of Joseph (9.). Children from 1888 History:

                        9.1.4.1.1.  Henry C. Duncan.

9.1.4.1.2.  Rebecca J. Duncan; married William Hoskins.

                        9.1.4.1.3.  Eli A. Duncan; died by 1888.

                        9.1.4.1.4.  Finus E. Duncan; died by 1888.

                        9.1.4.1.5.  Richard A. Duncan.

                        9.1.4.1.6.  Nancy C. Duncan.

9.1.4.1.7.  Catherine Duncan; married William Jordan. See below as 9.1.4.2.

9.1.4.1.8.  Mary E. Duncan; married James McAllister.

                        9.1.4.1.9.  Martha L. Duncan.

9.1.4.2.  Catherine Duncan, born 8 March 1834; died 3 December 1881; married William Jordan; buried in the Alwood Cemetery, Reynolds Co. MO (from Dorothy Davis Smith's index cards). There is NO PROOF Catherine was the daughter of Eli Duncan (9.1.4.) except that she is buried in the same cemetery as Adam J. Duncan (9.1.4.1.). Although Eli had a daughter born 1820-25 in his household in 1830 and one born 1830-35 in 1840, he had no daughter living with him in 1850. The 1888 History said Catherine, wife of William Jordan, was the daughter of Adam J. Duncan (9.1.4.1.).

9.1.5.  Josiah Duncan, born 10 May 1808-09 in KY, son of Rice and Jane Duncan; married Margaret Miller; joined the Greenville Baptist Church in 1836, was ordained in 1845, preached in St. Francis Association, and died in November 1858 (1972 "Wayne Co. MO" by Rose Fulton Cramer, pg. 493-4, original source not given). Josiah is buried in the Duncan cemetery. Margaret Ellen Miller was born 1817 TN, the daughter of Jacob Miller and Anne Clark of VA; died after 1870. The family was in Wayne Co. MO in 1840 (pg. 233); and in 1850 (pg. 203). Josiah owed money on a note to Allen Duncan (9.1.1.) payable 22 Jan. 1840 (Madison Co. MO Estate Papers of Allen Duncan, from Donald Duncan). Two unidentified children were deceased before the 1850 census. Nine children (information from and line of Nora Reed of MO (address not included here) to Paul H. Reeves):

9.1.5.1.  Andrew A. Duncan, born 22 May 1835 MO; lived with his parents in 1850; married Martha J. (or Ann) Mann; died 20 July 1881. Martha Ann was born 1844 in Reynolds Co. MO, daughter of Arnold Mann (d. 1872) and Lucinda Biggers (d. when Martha Ann was young). (1888 "History of Southeast MO" by Goodspeed, pg. 1126, Wayne Co.)

9.1.5.2.  William R. Duncan, born 1839 MO; lived with his parents in 1850; married Milly Catherine Lester.

9.1.5.3.  Mary Catherine Duncan, born 1840 MO; lived with her parents in 1850; married George Franklin Graham.

9.1.5.4.  Susan J. Duncan, born 1844 MO; lived with her parents in 1850; married James D. Faulkner.

9.1.5.5.  Henry Mackelmery Duncan, born 24 Aug. 1846 MO; lived with his parents in 1850 (Henry H. or A.); married 1st Sarah Hughes; married 2nd Emma C. Meador; died 11 March 1924. Sarah was born 16 March 1847, died 7 Nov. 1879. Emma was born 19 March 1886, died 8 Oct. 1948. All three are buried in the Liberty Hill Cemetery, Wayne Co. MO; H.M. Duncan was a minister (tombstone). The will of Henry Mackelmery Duncan dated 19 March 1923 was recorded on page 2 of Vol. 2 in Wayne Co. MO (from Mary Louise Craven's visit to the courthouse), and named his wife Emma C. and bodily heirs: William F., Margaret E., Andrew B., Mary J., Joel A., D. Anne, H. Frank, Roy C., Robert L., Nora M., Eli C., Clara V., T. Benton, and Lottie M.; executors Emma C. and William Duncan. The recording date was not shown.

9.1.5.6.  Richard W. Duncan, born 1849 MO (from census).

9.1.5.7.  Robert H. Duncan; married 1st Margaret Boal, daughter of Francis & Laura Boal; married 2nd Farris Boal. (MAD 7/17/2000: This 9.1.5.7. Robert H. Duncan, and the following 9.1.5.8. George Thomas Duncan, and 9.1.5.9. Arthur L. Duncan, are all children of the above 9.1.5.1. Andrew A. Duncan instead of his brothers, per Mary Dagenhart and Linda D. Smyth and the 1888 "History of Southeast Missouri" by Goodspeed, Wayne Co. MO, pg.1126)

9.1.5.8.  George Thomas Duncan; married Martha J. Farrell. (MAD: see comment in 9.1.5.7. above)

9.1.5.9.  Arthur L. Duncan; married Martha Ivonia Cook. (MAD: see comment in 9.1.5.7. above)

9.1.5.10.  Frederick M. Duncan; married 1st Jerusha Blackwell; married 2nd Louisa M. Lewis Duncan, the widow of Richard Lee Duncan of the Iron Co. MO Duncan family line.

9.2.  Mervel Duncan, born about 1773; married Rebecca -------- (b. 1773 MD) about 1796; died 1828 Allen Co. KY ("Allen Co. KY Wills and Settlements, 1815-1902" by Rabold and Price, pg. 6). Rebecca Duncan was appointed the administrator of his estate on 16 June 1828, with Ashley Duncan (9.6.) and Joseph Duncan (9. or 9.10.) as her securities. Mervel Duncan was in Warren Co. KY 1799-1811 (tax lists; 1810 census pg. 267); had a grant on 4 Sept. 1807 as "Morrel Duncan" for 140 acres on Defeated Fork of Drake's Creek in Warren Co. KY ("The Kentucky Land Grants" by Jilson); in Allen Co. KY 1815-1827 (tax lists; 1820 census pg. 98). Rebecca has not been located in 1830 or 1840, but in 1850 she lived with her son Oliver (9.2.5.) in Allen Co. KY (pg. 183). They had at least eight children, but only some have been tentatively identified. This family needs a lot more research.

9.2.1.  John Duncan; married Mary "Polly" Bernard on 6 May 1821 in Howard Co. MO. This was probably the John Duncan in Howard Co. MO in 1830 (pg. 168). On 1 May 1828, Daniel Monroe and wife Elizabeth exchanged with John Duncan and wife Polly, land in Twp. 49, Range 17, which was purchased in partnership by them from the government (Howard Co. MO Deed Book K, pg. 65, 74). There is NO PROOF this was the son of Mervel, but John (9.2.1.) and Henry (9.2.2.) both had a connection with a Monroe family, and they lived in the same area. Also, see John (9.5.) in Warren Co. KY 1803-1807. This family has not been traced further.

9.2.2.  Henry Duncan, born 14 Feb. 1801 in Allen Co. KY; to Howard Co. MO 1823; married Edith "Edy" Monroe on 26 March 1829 in Howard Co. MO. (1883 "History of Jasper Co. MO, Illustrated" by North, pg. 994, for son Emory F. 9.2.2.2., named his mother "Edna Morgan") Edith was born 1810 KY (census) or VA (1883 History) and raised in MO. Both Henry and "Eda" died after 1860 (census). Henry was in Allen Co. KY 1824-1825 (tax lists). On 4 Oct. 1833, Henry bought 79 acres in Howard Co. MO in Twp. 49, Range 17W, which he and his wife Ede sold on 17 Oct. 1836 (Howard Co. MO Deed Book M, pg. 39, and Book P, pg. 137). The family was in Livingston Co. MO in 1840 (pg. 259), 1850 (pg. 59), and 1860 (pg. 887), with children:

9.2.2.1.  Susan Duncan, born 1830 MO; married E.D. Carter on 4 Nov. 1851 in Livingston Co. MO.

Charity Hunt was born 18 Oct. 1838 in Ray Co. MO; died 1 May 1872; had six children, 3 living in 1883. Mrs. Mary Jenkins, widow of R.H. Jenkins killed at close of Civil War, was born 15 Oct. 1849. The family moved to KS 1876, then Jasper Co. MO 1878. (1883 "History of Jasper Co. MO, Illustrated" by North, pg. 994). Emory was shown on the 1850 census as a daughter "Emily F." age 17. Children of Emory F. Duncan and Charity Hunt, living in 1883, from the 1883 history:

9.2.2.2.1.  Allie V. Duncan; married Thomas Brady in 1876; lived in Newport, MO.

However, in 1825 a commissioner's deed was made to Samuel Oxford for William Duncan's 120 acres on Drake's Creek adjoining Lewis Reader, on which William had lived (Allen Co. KY Deed Book C, pg. 466). No connection to Joseph Duncan (9.) has been found other the location of the land.

--   One William Duncan (5.1.), born 1764-75, who is believed to be the son of Marshall Duncan (5.) is said to have gone from Pendleton Co. SC to Warren Co. KY to Bedford Co. TN, and then to Marion Co. AL. It is unknown if William 9.3. was the same as William 5.1.

9.7.10.  Joseph E. Pace, born 1830; married Elizabeth Weathersby; in Fannin Co. TX in 1850 (pg. 184) as the household of J.E. Pace 20 AR, and Ashley Pace 17 AR (9.7.11.).

9.7.11.  Ashley L. Pace, born 1822; married Louisiana Gilbert; was a confederate soldier; lived with his brother Joseph E. Pace (9.7.10.) in 1850, age 17.

            9.7.12.  Artemesia Pace.

9.7.13.  Emeline Pace; this may be the Emeline born 1828 AL who married S.D. Nunalee (b. 1820 AL) and was in Fannin Co. TX in 1850 (pg. 181) with Emeline J. Pace 8 TX in their household.

9.8.  Emery or Jerry Duncan, born before 1792. Emery Duncan witnessed the deed in Warren Co. KY 1813 from Joseph Duncan (9.) to Ashley Duncan (9.6.) (Warren Co. KY Deed Book F6, pg. 225; "Deed Abstracts of Warren Co. KY 1812-1821" by Joyce Murray, pg. 226, extracted the name as "Ben. Duncan"). Jerry Duncan was in Allen Co. KY on Drake's Creek in 1815 (tax list).

9.9.  Zadock Duncan, born 1790-94; assigned his land warrant #581 to Ashley Duncan (9.6.) who had 60 acres surveyed in 1817 on Trammel's Creek (Allen Co. KY Surveyor's Records, pg. 44); in Simpson Co. KY 1821 (tax list). Zadock must have moved on to Hickman Co. KY since in Lewis Reeder's tax list after 1828 there was a city lot in Hickman Co. in the estates of Joseph Duncan (9. or 9.10.) and Zadock Duncan (9.9.) evidently left to the children of Isabel Reeder (9.12.), still under age. They must have left land in trust with Lewis because Isabel was their sister. (Info from Patrick W. Costigan, see 9.12.)

9.10.  Joseph Duncan Jr., born before 1796; married Elizabeth Hendricks in 1817 in Warren Co. KY when he was over 21.

9.11.  Jenny Duncan, married William Williams on 15 July 1816 in Allen Co. KY; may be a daughter of Joseph Duncan.

--   One William Williams was in Allen Co. KY 1820 (pg. 118) as a male over 45; a William J. Williams was in Simpson Co. KY 1830 (pg. 296) and 1840 (pg. 205); and in 1850 was shown as Wm. J. Williams 57 TN, H. (female) 56 TN, A.G. (male) 14 KY, and M.H. (female) 12 KY, if this was the same family.

9.12.  Isabel, born 1774-84, may be Isabel Duncan; she married Lewis Reeder; one of their children was born 1809 but there were three older children. Isabel died about 1826 and Lewis remarried. Louis or Lewis Reeder was born 6 June 1774, the son of Joshua Reeder. Lewis was apparently in SC before he moved with his father and other family members to the area of Simpson Co. KY; he was in Simpson Co. in 1820 (census). Joshua Reeder bought land on 15 June 1805 on the south side of Sulphur Fork of Drakes Creek, intersecting the line of Thomas Robberson, in Warren Co. KY from George and Susanah Larance, witnessed by Joseph Duncan (9.), Daniel Reed, and John Williams (Warren Co. KY Deed Book 2B, pg. 281, from "Deed Abstracts of Warren Co. KY 1797-1812" by Murray, 1985; from Evelyn Sigler). See also Daniel Reid in Pendleton Co. SC in 1799-1801, under Joseph Duncan (9.) above. Zadock Duncan (9.9.) and Joseph Duncan (9. or 9.10.) were on the Simpson Co. tax lists for a couple of years about 1820. They must have moved on to Hickman Co. KY since in Lewis Reeder's tax list after 1828 there was a city lot in Hickman Co. in the estates of Joseph and Zadock (9.9.) evidently left to the children of Isabel, still under age. They must have left land in trust with Lewis because Isabel was their sister. (Information from and line of Patrick W. Costigan of MN (address not included here), sent to Mr. Louis Boone.) There is NO PROOF Isabel was the daughter of Joseph Duncan (9.).

9.  Joseph Duncan Continued: There were several other Duncan families in Warren Co. KY from about 1805 to 1808.

--   There were two Robert Duncans in 1806 and one in 1807 (tax lists). One of these may have been the Robert Duncan of Glasgow, Barren Co. KY, wife Sally, on the 1820 census (pg. 33) who died by 1827 when his widow Sally deeded her interest, 1/6 part, in a lot previously owned by her son John Duncan, to her daughter Sally Duncan (Barren Co. KY Deed Book K, pg. 299). Other children were James S. Duncan born 1802 (Deed H-22, L-74), Hiram W. who was under 21 in 1827 but of age in 1828 (Deed L-75, 332); Elizabeth married 1815 Burkett Tapp (Deed L-133); Sarah born 1805 VA married 1828 Samuel Scott (1850 Barren Co. KY census pg. 399; Deed L-332, R-82, R-110); Malinda married 1817 John Miller, died by 1841 (Deed R-82, 110). The estate of John Duncan, son of Sally, was settled by a judgement in Barren Co. KY Equity Court, Bundle 793, #1060; Robert Miller vs. B.B. Crump, B.N. Crump & G.W. Trabue, exors; answer filed March 25, 1841, which named the brothers and sisters of John Duncan.

--   One Robert Duncan had a daughter Jemima Duncan who married James Jones on 12 Sept. 1807 in Warren Co. KY witnessed by William Rountree and Marshall Duncan. One James Jones and wife, over 45, were in 1820 Warren Co. KY (pg. 34).

--   There were two Marshall Duncans in 1806 and 1807, one of whom was the father of Polly Duncan who married Nathan Watson, age over 21, on 29 Sept. 1807 in Warren Co. KY.

--   One Marshall Duncan married Peggy Doyle in 1805 in Warren Co. KY, security Gregory Doyle.

--   One Marshall Duncan married Elizabeth Boyd on 12 Jan. 1808 in Warren Co. KY, security James Thompson (Boyed on the marriage record); Elizabeth Duncan died 21 Nov. 1855, age 80, in Christian Co. KY, daughter of Randall and Margaret Boyd (Christian Co. KY Vital Statistics, Deaths, 1855). This may be the Elizabeth Duncan in 1850 Rockcastle Co. KY, age 80, b. VA, with a son or grandson Robert 20 b. KY (pg. 177, #292), since this is one of the few Elizabeth Duncans located in the 1850 census born about the right year. See Robert D. Duncan below who was briefly in Rockcastle Co. KY.

--   One James R. Duncan age 31 b. KY was in Carroll Co. AR in 1860 (pg. 814, Hickory Twp.) who may be the Robert Duncan 20 KY in Rockcastle Co. KY in 1850 (pg. 177) with Elizabeth above. His wife was Sarah H. 25 IN, and children John 6, Rebecca E. 4, Catharine S. 2, Mary J. 3/12 AR. James Robert Duncan married Sarah Hannah Hayhurst in 1853, was ambushed 1863-5 in Carroll Co. AR (Query by Wallace R. Duncan of OK (address not included here), in "Genealogical Helper" Sept. 1973)

--   Also in Rockcastle Co. KY in 1850 were Calvin Duncan age 27 b. TN, Hiram Duncan age 40 b. TN and Feliz (female) age 32 b. TN (pg. 163). This is probably the same Hiram who was in Carroll Co. AR in 1860 (pg. 794, Kings River Twp.) as Hiram Duncan 45 NC, Phebe J. 39 TN, and Sarah J. 8 KY.

--   Also in Rockcastle Co. KY in 1850 (pg. 177, #294) were Thomas Duncan 27 NC, Sciatha 30 NC, and John 11, James 9, Calvin 9, William 5, Hiram 3, and Andrew 1 KY. This may be the same family as Thomas Duncan age 40 TN, Mary age 33 TN, and William 14 and Andrew 12 KY, and Mary J. 4, Thomas 1 AR, and Eliza Ann Warren 9 KY "(step-daughter)" who were in Carroll Co. AR in 1860 (pg. 806, Kings River Twp.).

--   One Robert D. Duncan was briefly in Rockcastle Co. KY with 276 acres on Clear Creek in 1811 and 1812; this may be the Robert D. Duncan in Madison Co. KY in 1789 (tax list). A Sarah Duncan had 200 acres on Clear Creek from 1814 to 1831 (tax lists). Sally was on the 1820 Rockcastle Co. KY census (pg. 81) with a female and male over 45 and others; and in 1830 (pg. 90) with a male age over 100 and a female age 60-70 and others. There is no proof of her husband's name.

--   There was a Thomas Duncan who had land on Drake's Creek or Trammel's Fork 1803-1806 in Warren Co. KY (tax lists).

--   There was another Joseph Duncan on the same tax list as John, Marshall and Robert Duncan in 1806 with no land in Warren Co. KY.

As yet, none of these have been tied in to Marshall Duncan, the Elder. All these families need more research.
