Most
of the gravestones in this old section of Kirkmabreck graveyard
are of a standard size and shape.
There are just a few that are more ornate and one monument in
particular has a very original design. |
|
This
monument to a sea captain, appears to be made from one
single column of sandstone. The tree 'embracing' it
has certainly grown since the monument was erected. |

|
The
rope and anchor motif are obviously intended to be more decorative
and stylised than a true
representation of the actual objects would be. |
The
rope being two stranded is certainly not nautical and the
cross-bar on the shank of the anchor, in the position shown,
would render
the device unusable. |
The
sentiment of the inscription however, and the expense of
making such an elaborate monument clearly indicates that the person
commemorated here was held in very high esteem by those
who had it erected. |
