KONA Silver Family Reunion
(Southern Silvers)
      • Kona Missionary Baptist Church, Kona, Mitchell County, NC
      • Saturday July 26th - Sunday July 27th

It is once again almost time for the Silver Family to return to the mountains of Mitchell County, North Carolina for their annual reunion. Please make note that the Kona Missionary Baptist Church will be hosting the event this year and that the dates are Saturday, July 26 and Sunday, July 27.  Maxine McCall is the keynote speaker and all activities will be held in the Fellowship Hall.  We have a simple old fashioned reunion planned with lots of time for genealogy on Saturday.  In light of that, the Silver Family Archives and Kona Missionary Baptist Church will be open both Saturday and Sunday from 8:30 AM to 5:00 PM. There will be family there to answer your questions and assist you with your family history.

Lunch will be offered on Saturday for $7.00 and on Sunday we ask that you bring lunch for your family plus one to spread out in the kitchen for all to enjoy. It is fine if  you would rather bring a large dish or a meat instead of an entire meal. Drinks will be provided by the church. Lunch on Saturday is offered by the church to raise money for the operation of the church and the roof fund.

The Church also will have Silver Family and Silver Reunion T-Shirts for sale at $10 each. The shirts are a perfect way to remember Kona all year long and help support the church

Please bring pictures, Bibles and any item that you would like to see added to the archives. We will make copies and make sure that they are added to the family history. The family has many surnames and we are interested in all of them  Thomas, Gouge, Geouge, Howell, Stewart, Pitman, Penley, Pittman, Duncan, etc. The Silver Family reunion is open to everyone and it is a special event for the archives to be open.

For those that need directions, we suggest that from US 19E you will take State Highway 80 North to Kona. If you are coming from Burnsville, it is a left hand turn and from Spruce Pine, it is a right hand turn. NC 80 is a scenic mountain road and from the turn off at 19E, it is about 4 or 5 miles to Kona. It is a very beautiful drive, but will seem like the longest 4 miles that you have ever traveled. Please be sure to allow enough time to enjoy the roads that our ancestors traveled. As you approach Kona, you see an art gallery on the right hand side of the road. The gallery address is 7159 NC 80, Bakersville, NC and works well in Map Quest. The next driveway past the gallery on the right is the entrance to the Silver Family Cemetery and the "Little Church." The next left after the little church is the road to Kona Missionary Baptist Church. Take this left and stay on the road until you see the "Big Church." Please note that over the years, the trees have grown and the church can not be seen as well from NC 80 as in the past.

For those that can not walk a long distance, the Kona Missionary Baptist Church has a drive around driveway and the Silver Archives are located in the basement which is on the back side of the church. The Fellowship Hall that houses the Silver Archives does not have any steps and we can accommodate wheel chairs. Please note that if you bring computers, copiers or have need for power, you will need to bring plug adaptors since the church does not have 3 prong plugs.

Kona, NC is calling you to attend this years opening of the Silver Archives. Two years ago, one of our attendees said that as he was coming around the mountain to where both churches came into view, that he felt like he was coming home and with tear filled eyes added that there was nothing like coming home. Kona, North Carolina is a special place and it casts its own spell over people and we invite you to come join us at the 2008 Silver Family Reunion July 26-27.
