Following are photographs of several of the tombstones in the St. Michael Catholic Cemetery. This is not a complete list. Over the 4th of July 2000 weekend, mid-October 2000 and October 2004, Bruce and I visited several cemeteries in the Platte, Nance, Boone and Merrick Nebraska counties. My paternal Grandfather, Stanislaus GALUS, immigrated to the Tarnov area in September 1898. He lived with his aunt and uncle Andrew and Maryanna GALUS PAPROCKI who farmed near Tarnov.

Anna (nee PAPROCKI) AUGUSTON Died 15 Sierpien 1901 |
Following is an excerpt
from the Centennial book of Ss.
Peter and Paul Church at Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska:
Andrew and Anna (PAPROCKI) AUGUSTYN immigrated to the United States from Austrian Poland, June 4, 1881. Two weeks later they homesteaded some land in Platte County near Tarnov, Nebraska. They were the parents of five children: Mrs. John A. (Maria) TORCZON, Mrs. Joseph (Sophia) KUSEK, Mrs. Joseph (Magdalene) MATYA, Stanley, who married Maryanna SHOTKOSKI, and John. Andrew died January 11, 1883. Anna passed away August 15, 1901. Both are buried in the St. Michael Cemetery in Tarnov. In August 1998 I found the LDS microfilmed baptism/birth and marriage records for the Polish villages of Leki Gorne and Leki Dolne, Galicia (Austria), Poland, where both my Polish grandparents were born. There are several other connections between these Polish villages and the Tarnov, Krakow and Duncan Nebraska areas. Anna PAPROCKI AUGUSTYN was a sister of Andrew PAPROCKI, who married my great grandaunt Maryanna GALUS. Andrew and Maryanna came to the U.S. around 1874-5. Anna and Andrew PAPROCKI's parents were Blasic and Agnes KOTLARZ PAPROCKI. Anna PAPROCKI married Andreas AUGUSTYN, son of Antoni and Catharina BANDUR AUGUSTYN, 7 Feb 1849 in Leki, Poland. Anna was 15 years old (b about 1834) and Andreas was 22 (b about 1827) at the time of their marriage. John BARTYZEL 1873 - 6 January 1954 |
|
It is possible this is the John BARTYZEL who married my grandfather's first cousin, Elizabeth ROSNO (daughter of Joseph ROSNO and Sophia GALUS). I have found some discrepancies in the supporting documentation though. Elizabeth ROSNO BARTYZEL was listed as a widow in the 1930 Nebraska census in Greely County. |

This is probably the mother of Alois and John, listed above. I found a Mary BEDNASZ in the 1910 Nebraska census for Burrows Township. She was 28 years old, widowed, with 3 children: John age 7, Allois age 5 and a daughter listed as Cyril age 3. In the St. Michael's cemetery is a monument that lists the names of people buried in unmarked graves. There is a 33 year old John BEDNARZ, who died 12 March 1907. |
