Carl Gustafson owned a John Deere corn sheller. It was the type
that removed the corn from the cob and left the cob whole. Whole
cobs made it easy to fill the nightly basket to take into the
house for starting fires in the heating and cooking stoves. Here
son Ernest operates the tractor which powered the sheller by
belt. The 1925 Chevy truck is parked under the "cob stacker"
to collect the cobs. Corn cribs were built with slatted sides
to allow air to circulate and remove moisture from the ears of
corn in storage. The picture was probably taken in the mid to
late 20's. Notice the shiny paint job on the truck. |
