Notes for Ellen Powell
Ellen was left a widow with 5 children. Being without training for making a living, her first step was to study the then new subject of "Home Economics" and came to Seattle as the first head of that department in the Seattle Public Schools. She held that position long past the usual retirement age, the school lunch rooms and the adult education program having been added to her duties by that time. She also had her own kiln and made china which she sold. Of her five children, the 2 older sons disappeared from the family. Curtis Powell Dabney AKA George Curtis Powell and his brother Thomas Dabney left Washington sometime after 1900 and ended up in Missouri about 1912. They left Washington and their family forever. Curtis never saw or spoke to his family again nor told his wives or children that he had changed his name. Ellen's daughter Margaret died at the age of 18 from Acute General Peritonitis in the year 1908. Helen is now the widow of Leconie Styles, a Seattle businessman and Elmer took a PhD at the University. William, the youngest, lived in Washington, D.C. as Director of the Joint Stock Land Banks, a government corporation. His hobby was the preservation and marking of historical spots in the South at a time when there was no interest in such things. Obtained degree of B.S. from Univ. of Chgo, with post graduate work at Columbia Univ. meanwhile teaching, first science at Carthage Coll, Carthage, Ill and later on home economics at Bethel College, Henderson, Ky. Was summoned to give Fed. gov aid 1918=1919 under Food Administration and 1931 to conf. on child welfare by Pres. Hoover.
