Can anyone tell me anything about this John W. Terrell and Elizabeth Bagby's descendants? My ancestors James M. Terrell and wife Martha Jane Thomas named their first male child John William.

All information on this latter family will be greatly appreciated.

The following is the family of James M. Terrell b. abt 1828 & Martha Jane Thomas b. Abt. 1832. They married 8 June, 1849 in Rockingham Co., NC. If you are a descendant (or anyone) who knows for sure who the father of James M. Terrell is, please advise. I'll share whatever information that I have. My line:

So, is this the Henry Cocke who owned the land that became Wake Forest College/Wake Co. N.C. that I thought might be our Henry - father of David Clinton Cocke? Notice that Lucy Terrill's family was in Wake Co N.C., Granville Co N.C., and Franklin Co N.C., yet Jepthah was born in Caroline Co VA, and John Terrill was born in New Kent Co. Va. But, they ended up in N.C.

Hi to you all! Don't try to tell me that wonderous, unexplained things don't happen in this great big world of genealogy. By chance, Tim Land was surfing the genealogy world and came across my query or listing on a Message Board or in the Rootsweb archive. In the email he sent I believe he has documented that our David Clinton Cocke is the son of Henry Cocke Sr., who married Katerine Holt.

He is a direct descendant of Henry Cocke Jr., who married Lucy Terrill/Terrell, son of Henry Cocke Sr. and Katherine Holt, and he is the brother of our David Clinton Cocke. This makes David the son of Henry Cocke Sr., grandson of Lemuel Cocke, ggrandson
Thomas Cocke and gggrandson of Walter Cocke.

His documentation comes from a self-published book in 1980 "The Bradley-Cocke and Related Families" by Arnold L. Bradley. Tim's mother's maiden name was Cocke. Arnold was a cousin of Tim's maternal grandfather. Arnold was born in 1903 and is not thought to be living currently. His book goes into quite a bit of detail on the family. Tim is going to check with some his cousins, aunts, etc. to see if there are any available copies.

It is Tim's line of the Henry Cocke Jr., who married Lucy Terrill/Terrell. that I found in N.C. He bought consideable land in Wake Co. N.C. between 1800 and 1806 in and around Richland Creek in the N.W. portion of Wake Forest Township. He sold this land to David Battle of Wake Co.. This land later became a part of Wake Forest College Campus.

According to Arnold:
He gives an estimated birth date for David Clinton Cocke as 1764 - the oldest son who was to receive what his mother was left by Henry upon her death. This included Henry Sr's silver-hilted sword(I wonder where that is now?). Other siblings of David were Henry Jr.(born around 1765-1766) Elizabeth, Katherine, and Lemuel.

Henry Cocke(later Sr.) was born around 1741 in Southwart Parish, Surry Co. VA . He married Katherine Holt around 1762-1763. Henry died prior to 27 May 1777, as that was when his will was probated.

Henry Jr. was also born in Southwart Parish. He was about 12 when his father died, and David was not much older. Quoting Arnold - "Henry Jr appears to have been the Cocke that broke away and moved to N.C.( but, we know that David was in N.C. - even possibly born there in the Yadkim River Valley.) Henry Jr's family were strict Babtists and belonged to the Wake Cross Road(or Crossroad) Baptist Church." This is probably where we can find the obituary record from a Baptist Publication.

One more interesting area that Tim wrote about from the book - regarding Walter Flood Cocke,, christened 25 Jan 1657 in Constantine Parish, Cornwall Co. England was that Walter married either Ann or Mary Mason. Both were daughters and listed in the wills of their parnets, Colonel Lemuel and Ann Mason of Norfolk Co. VA. Walter and Ann or Mary Mason had three children - THomas, John and Ann. Thomas married Hannah Hamlin(not Hamilton). Ann also married a Hamlin.

Some of this information is new - some we already know - and some helps straighten out the Cocke lineage. Tim is making copies of the pertinent pages to send me including information of Walter's lineage in England. Tim also points out that the book mentions information on the Hamlin, Browne, Terrell, Watson, Burns, and Cagle families.

Tim's line follows Henry Macon Cocke, son of Henry Cocke Jr. and Lucy Terrel in N.C..

I will pass on any information I receive. I am really anxious to see what he sends!
