The History and Genealogy of the Shawhan and Related Families--Volume One
The History and Genealogy of the Shawhan and Related Families, Volume I--Genealogy

To make it easier to download, the volume is divided into sections based upon family lines. The surname index is alphabetically listed by last name, first name and corresponding page numbers.

NOTE: The following "PDF" files must be used with Adobe Acrobat Reader. You can download a free Acrobat Reader by going to the Adobe Web Page.

A few tips in using Adobe Acrobat Reader:

1. Since you must use Adobe Acrobat Reader to access these files, it is probably best to familiarize yourself with the features of this program as you use it. For example, after opening a PDF file, you may want to experiment with the scroll and zoom features. The image will initially appear "far away" and difficult to read. By zooming in on the page (to selection the zoom feature, click on the magifying glass), you can really get "up close and personal!"

2. You might want to save the file(s) to disk then open up Adobe Acrobat Reader and search the files this way. By doing this, you will avoid dealing with internet speeds, which are wildly undependable. I strongly suggest this method.

3. One of the nicest features of Adobe Acrobat Reader is it's print feature. You will be able to print the pages as if they came right out of the book--crisp, clean and beautifully formatted. In fact, I encourage you to print whatever you need. You might want to print the Surname Index to use as a handy reference guide to the entire volume.

Headline: MATTINGLY'S GROCERY IS AN OLD-TIME GENERAL STORE AND DINER ROLLED INTO ONE
Publication Date: October 10, 1999
Source: Evansville Courier & Press
Page: B3
Nowadays Terri Sullivan, 38, keeps on the go nearly nonstop running thebusiness, called Mattingly's Grocery, on heavily traveled Indiana Highway 65. Despite the name, it's much more than a grocery store. It's an old- timegeneral store and diner rolled into one.

The couple's enthusiasm runs deeper than eking out a modest living toaugment their farming. They're enjoying saving the building's 19th century nostalgia for the fast-approaching 21st century. Truck drivers who want a break regularly stop by. Other travelers stop after becoming curious about the tall Western looking building with its distinctive barn-wood front and sides of silver-gray roofing shingles. There's seldom quite time between the business hours of 6 a.m. and 5 p.m.,seven days a week.

Terri Sullivan and her crew keep the ham, eggs and sausage coming off the grill for customers' breakfasts. At lunchtime they turn out steady orders of fried German bologna, catfish sandwiches and other menu items.

"We are totally loaded right now," said Dixie Hughes, one of the workers ona recent afternoon.

"It'll be all over by 1:30 or 2 o'clock. Then we'll cleanup...

"I'm a freebie (volunteer). I just like to help out here because I like being around people.

Mattingly's Grocery also has sentimental value for Hughes. Her grandfather, Eldon Beazley, started the store in the mid-1880s. There was an Odd Fellows Hall upstairs in the early days.

"Since Jeff and I farm, too, a lot of times I couldn't keep the store openwithout Dixie being here," Terri Sullivan said.

The place is cheerful and immaculately kept. Tablecloths in tiny teapotand floral prints cover the dining tables. Green-blue cabinets line the walls. The store inventory ranges from motor oil, bread and canned barbecue to yo-yos and hand-held miniature bubblegum machines.

John "Boodie" Shawhan of Plainville, Ind., comes in nearly every day for coffee, a bite to eat and to reminisce. "I used to come in and eat lunch here when I was a second-grader at Union Grade School more than 60 years ago," he said.

The store's patterned tin ceiling brings back memories for him and so doesthe wooden display case with sliding glass doors and counter top.

"It's just great the kids (Sullivans) have the foresight to take on this project and keep it going," Shawhan said.

Kids come in and "raid the candy racks," stirring memories for Terri Sullivan of when she was a youngster and visited the store. When she isn't at the store, she's usually out picking up the bulk of the business' daily supplies. "Delivery charges would eat us up. We couldn't make anything if I didn't go get most of the items myself," she said.
