VINALHAVEN………….James R. “Slim” Philbrook, 65, of Vinalhaven, lost his courageous, but short battle with cancer on January 18, 2011 passing away at his home surrounded by his loving family. Born in Vinalhaven on October 23, 1945, he was one of nine children of William and Ethel (Nelson) Philbrook. James was educated at the Washington School and the Lincoln School both in Vinalhaven. At the age of 16, he moved to Boston to find work. His employment there included several positions, a building superintendent, a cab driver, and his personal favorite, a chef at Harvard University. He also earned his brown belt in Karate. While in Boston he was married, had two daughters, Sharon and Linda, and then divorced. James later met and married Ruth Ann Foote Hunsinger who had two sons, Ron and Myron. They later added two more daughters, Beverly and Jamie to the family. He would spend the next forty years of his life with his beloved wife, Ruthie by his side. In 1982, James and his family moved back to his favorite place, Vinalhaven. His next 28 years were spent fishing and lobstering. His proudest days at sea were spent on his boat with his children, Jamie, Beverly, Myron, sister-in-law, Beverly and son-in-law, James in the stern. At the time of his death, he was Captain of the F/V Haul-A-Day, having owned several other boats previously. Throughout his life, James enjoyed spending time with his many friends and fellow fisherman. During the last few weeks of his life, his loyal friend Ira T. Warren, sat for many hours with Slim recounting past times and listening to old tunes. He was predeceased by his parents, and four sisters, Bertha Warren, Margaret Warren, Rosalind Brown and Dorothy Porter. Surviving is his wife, Ruth Philbrook of Vinalhaven; two sons, Ron Hunsinger and his wife Lynda of Laceyville, PA; Myron Hunsinger and his companion, Amy of Meshoppen, PA; four daughters, Sharon Philbrook of East Boston, MA; Linda Litcofsky and her husband, Michael of Salisbury, MA; Beverly Warren and her husband, Corey; Jamie Harris and her husband, James all of Vinalhaven; three brothers, John Philbrook and his wife, June of Virginia; Carl Philbrook and his wife, Frances of Vinalhaven; William Philbrook of NJ; one sister, Beulah Jean Philbrook of West Virginia; a brother-in-law, Ira B. Warren of Vinalhaven; four sisters-in-law, Helen Bastian; Marilyn Walton and her husband, Douglas, Betty Shaffer, all of PA; and Brenda Stafford of Rochester, NY; 17 adored grandchildren; 6 beloved great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. A Celebration of his Life will be held at a later date and will be announced by the Long Funeral Home & Cremation service.
