Marcus was probably born in Hertford County, North Carolina and moved to Wilson County, Tennesse with his parents around 1808. He was the oldest son of William and Francis Nickens. He and his family were living in Wilson County, Tennessee in 1830, and were in Williamson County, Tennessee at the time of the 1840 and 1850 census. In 1860 the family was living in Nashville.

1. Marcus² Nickens (William¹) was born 1800 in NC, and died Bet. 1860 - 1870. He married Annina (Penny) Ausbrook or Osbrook 05 Jun 1826 in Wilson Co., TN, daughter of unknown Ausbrooks and Dortha. She was born 1808 in NC, and died Bet. 1860 - 1870.
