MY IRISH-CANADIAN HERITAGE
SIX REIDs from PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
-
Richard REID , born in Lot 34, PEI about 1829, was the son of Irish immigrants, Martin REID and his wife Bridget. After his father's death in 1857, Richard inherited that part of the family's property in Lot 35, near the bridge at Corran Ban; it was on this farm that his 10 children were born. He is buried in St Michael's Cemetery, Corran Ban.
-
Johanna CULLEN , the wife of Richard REID , was born 22 Jun 1835; I believe her to be the daughter of Edward CULLEN and Mary BUTLER , both born in Ireland. Johanna is buried in St Michael's Cemetery, Corran Ban.
-
Edward James REID , born about 1860, married Mary Ellen DOYLE before 1886, and emigrated to Boston prior to his father's death in 1888. "Ned" was the father of "Pat the Cop", who will soon star in his own "Miss Marge Marple Minute Mystery"!
-
Richard REID , born 29 Jun 1861, never married. He was a roofer in Boston: the 1935 Boston City Directory lists him as boarding with his sister Emma REID McGOWAN , who was, by then, a widow.
-
John Henry REID , born 15 Apr 1868, married Emma Catherine CURRAN in 1895. They moved to South Boston, where their first child was born in 1896. They are my Paternal Grandparents.
-
Margaret Frances REID was born 17 Jan 1866, and married Cormack McMANUS before 1892 . This family also moved to Boston. According to a daughter, Margaret did NOT like being called "Maggie"!
-
Bridget Ann REID born 29 Jun 1861, married James Patrick DOUGAN before Nov 1884, moving after 1901 to Boston . One of their sons returned to PEI; a grandson still lives in the original farmhouse built by his DOUGAN ancestors on DOUGAN Road, Lot 35, PEI.
-
Elizabeth Emma REID , born 17 Aug 1874, married Joseph McGOWAN , born in Ireland abt 1862. They had three sons, two of whom were living at the time of the 1920 Census. One of those surviving sons married and had two children. He, his wife, his children and his children's spouses moved to Guam after World War Two. Read all about my search for this family in the Miss Marge Marple's Minute Mystery called The Missing McGOWAN Cousins" .

- Martin REID was born 13 Jun 1857, and inherited the larger part of his father, Richard's property. He married Mary HAGEN on 18 Jan 1887, at St Ann's Church, Hope River. Martin died in 1906 in a buggy accident. His widow took her children to Cape Breton Island, where she ran a boarding house in Sydney.Martin is buried next to his parents in St Michael's Cemetery, Corran Ban.
- Mary Ellen REID was born 17 Nov 1862. She married James CARR (son of Patrick CARR of Hope River) on 19 Jul 1887 at St Eugene's Church, Covehead. Many descendents still live in PEI.
- Julia Catherine REID was born 27 Apr 1871. After her mother's death, she emigrated to the US, dying in Boston on 22 Aug 1910. She was buried in St Michael's Cemetery, Corran Ban, Lot 35, PEI.
- Johanna REID was born 12 Aug 1872, and baptized at St Bonaventure Church, Tracadie, Lot 36, on 18 Aug 1872. She was not enumerated with the family in the 1891 Census for Lot 35.
