Second Generation
2. Friedrich
(Heinrich "Friedrich") KRUMWIEDE was born on 19 Apr 1827 in Stoeckse,
Germany.5
It now seems apparent that the "Friedrich" Krumwiede who settled in
Blue Island, Illinois, is NOT the eldest brother of Heinrich Konrad Krumwiede,
Wilhelm Krumwiede and August Krumwiede making up this family group. The man in
Blue Island is Heinrich Christian "Friedrich" Krumwiede and his date
of birth is 5 Jan 1828 according to his descendants. The church records of that
man's baptism are in hand, as are the records giving the names and dates of birth
of the four oldest sons of Jürgen Heinrich Krumwiede and Katherin Marie
Buchholz. Neither the full name, the date of birth nor the names of the parents
is the same. Chances are great, however, given the fact that the man from Blue
Island is from the same congregation, St. Dionysius Ev. Lutheran Church in Steimbke
(in the area called both Hagen and Stoeckse in years past), that he is a cousin
-- and a close cousin at that. He immigrated on 5 Sep 1853 to New York, New
York.6 (This may or may not
be the eldest of our 4 brothers, At age 25, he is the correct age to have been
the child older than Henry, and the death certificate of our great-uncle says
he married at age 25. He is from Hanover and sailed from Bremen. Unfortunately,
specific village of origin was not recorded when he boarded. The two "Friedrich"
Krumwiede men, both baptized at St. Dyonisis Ev. Lutheran Church in Steimbke,
are only 8 months apart in age, and knowing which this is is impossible without
more information.)

KRUMWIEDE, Friedr., age 25, male, farmer, from Hanover to USA
He died of "Cancer of the neck" on 29 May 1908 in Jordan, Scott County, Minnesota.7,8
Dies at Ripe Age.
The death of Fred Krumwiede occurred at his home in this city, Friday evening,
after an illness of several months with cancer of the ear. He was sick in bed
for only a week, however.
Deceased was 81 years of age and for his years a man of amazing vitor. One
would not judge him to be nearlyh so old. Even under stress of his deadly malady,
the ravages of time were not very noticeable.
The funeral occurred from his late residence, Sunday afternoon and interment
was in Spirit Hill cemtery. He is survived by a son, Henry of Excelsior and a
daughter, Mrs. C. Boxmeyer of St. Paul. Mr. and Mrs. Boxmeyer were present at
the funeral, so was Henry Krumwiede and the latter's son Roy and wife of Minneapolis.
Friedrich (Heinrich "Friedrich") KRUMWIEDE and Dorothea DIERKS were married
after 23 Oct 1854. Dorothea DIERKS (daughter
of Frederic DIERKS and Dorothea "Louisa" SCHARNHORST) was born on 21 Oct 1834
in Rohsen, Hanover, Germany. She died of heart troubles on 2 Dec
1897 in Jordan, Scott County, Minnesota.9
Dorothea Dirks Krumwiede
At Eternal Rest
After a lingering illness of nearly a year with that always fatal disease, heart
troubles, Mrs. Frederick Krumwiede passed away amid the light of home and sorrow
of friends, at the residence of her son-in-law, C. [Christian] Boxmeyer, in this
city, Thursday forenoon at 9:30 o'clock, Dec. 2, 1897, at the advanced age of
63 years, 1 month and 11 days. Deceased was an exemplary mother, loving wife,
and devout member of the Lutheran church, from whence the funeral was held Sunday
afternoon, attended by a large concourse of mourning relatives and friends, and
her remains laid to rest in Spirit Hill cemetery. Rev. Moebus of Belle Plaine
conducted the services.
She leaves an aged husband, three sons [Henry, Herman, August] and one daughter
[Mary], besides a host of friends to mourn her demise. She was the mother of
nine children, five of whom preceded her to the grave.
Dorothea Dirks was born Oct. 21, 1834, in Rohsen, Hanover, Germany, immigrated
to America in 1854 and settled at Chicago, and the same year married Fred. Krumwiede.
In 1856 they came to Jordan, and resided here ever since, which numbers them
with the oldest settlers.
During her illness, as during her life she bore her cares and troubles with Christian
fortitude and patience, and although many of the best doctors of the country
had treated her she could not be relieved, and passed to that happier land where
there is no sorrow.
The family have the sincere sympathy of the entire community in their hour of
deepest sorrow.
Dorothea Dierks has often been assumed to have married William because she came
on the same ship as Heinrich, Dorothea and William. However, obituaries from
Minnesota make it clear she married Friedrich, not William.
A simple explanation is found -- as often -- in Herr Gross' writing, in which
he mentions that Friedrich was the first to come to America. So, Friedrich was
already here. It was common practice for one relative, often the eldest son,
to come to America and then send back money for other family members -- or his
intended wife -- to follow him. It makes perfect sense that Friedrich's intended
wife would accompany married couple Heinrich and Dorothea and Wilhelm, espcially
since I believe the person listed AFTER Dorothea Dierks on the passenger list
is an "older" relative (age 37). His name is Ludwig Ammerman, unless
my eyes deceive me, and that is a name that pops up on the church records in
Stiemke connected with the family.
Friedrich (Heinrich "Friedrich") KRUMWIEDE and Dorothea DIERKS had
the following children:
7 | i. | Henry KRUMWIEDE. | 8 | ii. | Herman KRUMWIEDE. | 9 | iii. | August KRUMWIEDE. | +10 | iv. | Mary KRUMWIEDE. |
