Generation One
Joseph Smith came to Schuyler County, Il. from Morgan County in 1834. At that time, he purchased land from Alexander and Elizabeth Perry. In 1841, he purchased a lot in Cooperstown in Brown County. The first burial in Mt. Sterling cemetery in 1833 was of a woman named Smith. This may have been an earlier wife of Joseph Smith. Since other marriages to a Joseph Smith have been found in Illinois. We will be following only the one that pertains to our family. To maintain the privacy of living individuals, only the first four generations are given here and some data purged on individuals known to be still living.

1. 1850 Census. Brown Co., Il. Joseph Smith, age 45, Cooper, born Pa., wife Mary age 30, children Sarah Jane, 11, Margaret 9, William 4, and Isabella 2.
2. The 1870 census has Joseph Smith and his wife Jane born in Ohio. The 1850 and the 1860 census records states that he was born in Pennsylvania and she was born in Ireland. This may indicate that his parents lived in Ohio and Pennsylvania and possibly moved when he was yet a child. It is likely that a census taker merely asked a neighbor for the information and they only knew he came from Ohio.
3. Marriage Record "B" 1737-1861 Morgan Co., Il pg. 15, Film 1317641-FHL, Salt Lake City, Utah.
4. Mary Jane Fleming's ancestry as yet unknown. Keep in mind the following possibility to pursue further as three Fleming children came to Iowa at approximately the same time as our Smith family. One of these children was named Cynthia. Traditionally, family names were handed down from generation to generation. Two Cynthias indicate the possibility of a grandmother or mother named Cynthia or possibly a sister of an ancestor.
5. If the old form of naming children with oldest son named after his father, and second son named after her father, it would appear her father's name was Charles. A Charles Fleming was indentured in Maryland in early colonial records. (CHECK DATE)
