The above link  is new information that was unknown when the Descendants of Joshua Green(e) was first written. A number of descendants of Joshua Greene still live in Louisa County, Iowa where I now live.  To save renumbering this manuscript, I have retained my original manuscript here.  Some of the following data is not in the above manuscript so you will want to check both documents.

1. Joshua¹ Green was born August 04, 1744 in Delaware, and died 1799 in Wash. Co., Tenn.. He married Susanna Jordan, May 24, 1769 in Newcastle Co., Deleware.  She was born December 25, 1749, and died 1799 in Washington Co., Tenn. Possibly the son of John Green of Newcastle, Delaware..

The earliest Green ancestors of whom we had any information in the past lived in the State of  Delaware about the middle of the 18th century.  Joshua Green (1744-1799) and his brother Jess Green, Sr. (1753- bef. 1838) grew to manhood there. Jesse fought in the Revolutionary War and married Isabella Gibson in 1782 and had nine children. Since we are descended from Joshua, we will present his data first. Blue links will take you to other branches of the family that intermarried with the Greenes.  A cousin marriage creates a link between two brothers in a later generation whose offspring married.  While we find the Green name spelled without the "e" in Tennessee, the family changed the spelling to Greene after coming to Iowa. It is interesting to note that the Jesse Greene descendants also insist their name is Greene and not Green which is a color.

1.  JOSHUA1 GREEN was born August 04, 1744 in Delaware, and died 1799 in Wash. Co., Tenn..  He married SUSANNA JORDAN May 24, 1769 in New Castle Co., Delaware.  She was born December 25, 1749, and died 1799 in Washington Co., Tenn..

A marriage record for a Joshua Green and Susanna Jordan was found in New Castle Co., Delaware, p. 254 in index.  New Castle Co. DE Quaker marriage book for Newark/Kennett Monthly Meeting records.  The marriage record matches the one found in family records of Wash. Co., TN

Whereas Joshua Green of Mill Creek Hundred in the County of New Castle on Delaware and Susanna Jordan of the same having declared their intention of marriage with each other before several monthly meetings of people called Quakers, one of which was at Christiana Hundred and County affore-- the other held at Kennett Meeting in the County of Chester and province of Pennsylvania, according to the good wed among them and having consent of parents and parties concerned said proposal of marriage was allowed by the said meetings.

Now these are to certifie whom it may concern that for the full accomplishing the said intentions this twenty fourth day of fifth month in the year of our Lord one thousand seven hundred and sixty nine (1769). They the said Joshua Green and Susanna Jordan appeared in Publick meeting of the said people at Hockessing and the said Joshua Green taking the said Susanna Jordan by the hand did in a  solemn manner openly declare that he took her the said Susanna Jordan to be his wife, promising with the Lord's assistance to be unto her a loving and faithful husband untill death should separate them and then and there in the same assembly, the said Susanna Jordan in like manner declare that she took the said Joshua Green to be her husband promising with the Lord's assistance to be unto him a faithful and loveing wife until death separated them. She in the custom of marriage assuming the name of her husband as further confirmation thereof did then and there to those present sett their hands.

And  whose names are hereunder also subscribed being present at the Solemninzation of the said marriage and subscription have  witnessed hereunto set our hands the day and year above written. --------------------- Joshua Green, Susanna Green

(David's Notes) My mother has a copy of a biography of Jesse's son Jesse, Jr. written by the latter's wife.  It is almost exclusively about Jesse Jr.'s years in missionary work in the west.  There are a only few tidbits about Jesse Sr.'s and Isabella Gibson's background: he was born and reared in
Delaware; she was born in Pennsylvania; they had 9 children.  My grandfather, O. D. Greene, Sr. was adamant that his name was spelled
with the final "e" -- he would say that "green" was a color, not a proper name.

Jesse appears in several places in Haywood's History of Tennessee, Goodspeed's History of Tennessee, and J. G. M. Ramsey's Annals of
Tennessee, sometimes with Gibsons.  Other associates include Cozby, Gillespie, Beard, Bowman and White.  Many of the references to
him also involve John Sevier, or his brother Robert.  I believe Jesse was among the volunteer force the Seviers organized to take to the Kings
Mountain engagement (where Robert Sevier lost his life).  Jesse Greene is identified as one of the small number of Sevier associates who
"rescued" Sevier from the courthouse in Morganton, NC in 1788 during the State of Franklin episode.  I surmise that he came to the French
Broad River country in Knox Co. in the 1780s.  There are several land grants in Jesse Greene's name from NC (before 1796) and TN (after
1795) in Knox and Greene counties -- all told 1000+ acres (if there was only one Jesse Greene in the picture!).  There is a Jesse Green with
a household of 7 males in Watauga County, NC previous to 1790, but I do not know if there is a connection.  I know nothing of the 7 other
children.  Jesse Jr. is buried in Missouri.  Jesse Sr. and Isabella are buried in what is now (but surely was not then) Forest Grove Free Will
Baptist Church, a few miles east of Knoxville.  My uncle, O. D. Greene, Jr. still lives in the community where Jesse Sr. is buried.
