Alexander Rutledge born in 1786 in Virginia appears to have been married
3 times.....

1)

Nancy McLemore in 1808
2)

Nancy Cox 1812
3)

Nancy Armstrong ????

Daughter Sarah Ann Rutledge was born to Alexander and Nancy McLemore in
1810.

Does anyone have any information on a possible daughter Nancy Rutledge
born around 1816 to Alexander and Nancy Cox?

He was the son of 2. John Rutledge and 3. Elizabeth Grimke.

He married Matilda King ABT 1790 in Virginia, daughter of Peter King.
She was born 1775 in North Carolina, and died BEF 12 NOV 1844 in Barry,
Missouri. +++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Gloria, allow me to offer the following for your consideration.  Then
you can draw your own conclusions.

~Southern Historical Magazine:~

John Rutledge and Elizabeth Grimke had issue:  [Total: 10]

William Rutledge, b. 17__, died __1822; married Sep. 12 1797, Ann Grimke
Coslett (St. Phillips Register, No. 2).  She was his cousin, being the
daughter of Hon. Charles Matthews Coslett, an assistant Judge for SC,
and Ann Grimke, youngest daughter of John Paul Grimke, jeweller.  (SC
Gazette, Dec. 24, 1772).  The original marriage settlement was dated
Sep. 11, 1797, Mrs. Ann Coslett, widow, and Edward Rutledge, Trustees.

William Rutledge and Ann Coslett had one child, Nancy, baptized Aug. 3,
1798 (St Phillips Register No. 2) who died young.

A deed dated 22Feb1802, recites the marriage settlement of William
Rutledge and Ann Grimke, his wife; Hon. John F. Grimke and Mrs. Ann
Coslett, trustees;
states purchase by William and Ann Rutledge from Hon. Hugh Rutledge,
executor of Mrs. Sarah Rutledge, of a plantation in Christ Church Parish
[SC].

William Rutledge made his Will 12Mar1822, proved 29May1822.  Leaves his
brother Frederick Rutledge, Esq., all of his estate.  Requests to be
buried in St. Michael's Church yard [Charleston, SC] by the side of his
wife, Ann Coslett Rutledge.

I found several Rutledge listings in "Kegley's Virginia Frontier"
subtitled "The Beginning of the Southwest, The Roanoke of Colonial Days
1740-1783" by F. B. Kegley, originally published in 1938, reprinted
Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2003. I had it on inter-library
loan through my local library from the St. Louis County Library so will
be unable to do any lookups. I borrowed it to look up info on other
lines, not Rutledges, so have no further info on any of these but the
Rutledges listed are: Edward, George, James, John and Thomas. There are
also pictures of the Thomas Rutledge House, North Fork Roanoke & the
Rutledge Spring House. Hope this helps someone.

As long as I'm writing: my Rutledge ancestor is John R. Rutledge who
was in Louisiana in the early 1800s. His father may have been Hugh. He
may have been from South Carolina. His daughter, Sarah Ann, married
William Lemon 6 Jun 1806, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. They moved
to Livingston County, Kentucky where William died in 1832.

Jan, I was looking at the genealogy you sent (thanks a million) from your
friend and my distant cousin. The genealogy is titled," Descendants of Franklin
Perrin Rutledge." In it is a Dudley. Is that one of your Dudley's? If so we are

Before we leave the Augusta County (Virginia) Rutledge's for now -- at least
until the folks at Black Oak can provide more information -- the following may
offer a few leads or clues.

We now know that Edward settled in New Hope, VA, around 1763 and that he and
his wife Sarah (nee Armstrong) divided their land between their two sons,
James Enos and George B. Rutledge. George, the younger son, inherited the house,
which still stands (Black Oak) and is currently owned by the Mehler family.
James lived right next door. (The other four children were girls, with no rights
to property at the time.)

James Enos (1768-1848?) had one son I know of, Elijah (1804-1856), and three
daughters (Elizabeth, Jane, and Eleanor). George (1770-1823) had three sons
and four daughters. All, I believe, were born in Augusta County, presumably at
Black Oak.

George's children (I think) were:
Rosannah (1802-1877) -- who married her next door neighbor: Elijah, son of
James Enos
Jane (1808-?) -- who married Amaziah Kerr in 1825
George, Jr. (1811-1871) -- who became a Methodist minister
Mary Ann (1813-1893) -- who married James Q. Palmer
Lydia (1816-1864) -- who married Hiram Harris
Edward (1818-1894)
William Johnson (1820-1900) -- who married Lois Stratton

At some point most of the family seems to have moved from Augusta Co., VA to
Fulton County, Illinois. Where in Fulton Co. is another question. However, a
LDS posting sounded pretty specific: Rosannah Rutledge died 17 May 1877 and is
buried in Baker Cemetery, Table Grove, Fulton Co, IL.

This Rutledge family isn't from Tennessee.  They are from Charlotte Co., VA.
They do carry many of the same names of later generations in Tennessee (i.e.
David, Synthia).  I believe that David Rutledge's brother may be John who
went to Tennessee in early 1800's.  Possibly the same John that murdered
William Loggins, Jr. in Tennessee.  John was married to Sally Loggins in
1794 in Charlotte County, VA.  From internet info. Sally and William were
probably cousins.

I really wish I could find something to connect the Charlotte Co., VA and
the Tennessee Rutledge families.

Yes John Sheffield was born about 1799 seen on the census record in
Appomattox,VA in 1860 said he was 61 years old he was listed as John
Sherfield..He was from Lunenburg,VA.I have his fathers will his father was
Jesse Sheffield married Susannah Cheatham maiden name of Susannah not proven
yet just speculation. They were at one time in Surry Co.VA..If my John
Sheffield died in Appomattox,Va then there would be no will on him as the
records for Appomattox,VA were burned in 1892.But if he died in Lunenburg
maybe there is a chance .Thou some of the records in Lunenburg were also
burned. Not sure about the year they were burned. The only child I have proof
of is his daughter Sarah Sheffield who married William Rutledge.Hope this
helps.Gloria

Thanks for the info Larry. One of my sons said to me he would like to know what he is the most of .Scot ,Irish,Indian,English there is also a little German.I have not asked him if he would be willing to take the test yet.But through my research I have been able to prove that I am 1/4 Cherokee also Cheroenhaka Nottoway Indian.Quite a few of my ancestors came in at the Isle of Wight and were from Lunenburg and Nottoway ,VA .Very early on some came in at Jamestown.I have been able to have my birth certificate change that it now says my mom and dad were Indian .VA. because of Walter Plecker will do it for free if you can get a Tribe to verify it.I was able to do that. Now the question is.When I would take the DNA test would it tell me the percent of Scot,or Irish ,or English,Indian or German?.As that is what I am.I had no clue about what I read on the DNA site you sent.Would it matter that I am a woman on taking to see what percentage I am most of or would it be better to have my !
son take the test for this? Also there are many on this list who have taken the DNA test .What company would be the most reliable I have no clue as to which one would be the best.? Oh one more question  Joseph Rutledge who married Mary Paschal has anyone done a test to see where they came from? You know English or Scot or Irish?I don`t remember seeing that at the site. Thanks again.Gloria

According to the will of Edward Rutledge of Augusta County Virginia dated
Jan 31 1787, and Fild Feb 20 1787 each of his seven children received Bequests
but his will contained no bequests of real estate. The lineal information
obtained about him and his wife and their children is very meagre except for
that of their son George Rutledge.
In the Application paper of Paul White Rutledge (Descendant of our Edward

I will begin with page 41 of George Rutledge 1770-1824

George son of Edward was born and died in Augusta Co. Virginia Married to
Mary Galbreath and all of his 11 children born there. He was highly esteemed and
respected by all who knew him. He was a elder in the Presbyterian church,
Had a  keen sense of humor and his solution
for dealing with an unaruly boy was "wash his face, send him to school and
make a good
Presbyterian out of him.
He was a planter and accumulated consideerable property. His untimely death
was die to an acciednt. In lifting a weight that was crushing another, his
lungs  were ruptured and he never recovered from the hemmorages that followed.
When George Rutledge died in 1824 he left a widow with 8 children, the
eldest 13 and the
youngest 4 years old In October of 1834 the widowed mother and seven of her
children moved to Illinois, settling near Table Grove, Fulton County. They
made  the journey in a caravan of horsedrawn vehicles and compledted it in safety
.  William her youngest child was then 14 years drove his mother the entire
distance.
When the family moved to Illinois George was 23 being the oldest son.
Devolved in the dare and management of the affairs of his mother's household.
One of the daughters Mary Ann Rutledge married James Quarles Palmer about
two years before her mother moved west. As a bride she went to live in Port
Republic Virginia, and resided theree until Dec of 1839, when she and her
husband and two little sons moved west and settled in Marietta, Fulton Co.
Illinois. George Rutledge Palmer, their eldest child, was then only six years  old.
After moving to Illinois Mary Ann became an intimated friend of Ann
Rutledge, identified with Abraham Lincoln, and often told her grandchildren
stories about
this friendship. Tehir respective families, although of the same Rutledge
name, were not
related.

There were other Rutledge families in Pennsylvania, North and South
Carolina's,
and Tennessee, which have no known connection with the one which this study
is
dealing.
this Edward Rutledge born in or about 1725, appears to have gone from the
North of
Ireland and to have arrived in Pennsylvania between 1735 and 1740. The
evidence
is that he emigrated from Pennsylvania to the Valley of Virginia in the
1740's. As yet we have
no postive knowledge of his parentage, or place, or date of his birth. Nor
do we know if he had brothers and sisters.
He was a planter, industrious, well liked and highly respected  by all  who
knew him.
in 1750 he married Miss Sarah Armstrong, the daughter of a prominet Augusta
County
Virginig family and Edward died Feb 18, 1787.
Many of his Descendants have cherished the Traditional Story that he was
related to the
children of Dr. John Rutledge of Charleston, South Carolina.
The fact of the names being of similarity between the two families has led
to some confusion, when descendants of this Edward Rutledge have claimed,
through error, the line and services of Dr. John of Charleston S. C.
That a relationship existed between these two families is quite probable,  if
one could trace with accuaracy from origin of each family but, certainly, not
 a close relationship on these
shores.
Edward and his wife Sarah ahd issue:

1 Rebecca Rutledge married Charles Daugheerty, who died Sept 20 1763
2. James Rutledge died between 1794 married July 14, 1778
Eleanor Ralston   they had 7 children
3.Rosanna Rutledge never married her will dated May 22 1799 proved Oct 28
1799.
4. George Rutledge born May 20 1770 died March 30 1824 married May 8 1800,
Mary Galbreath born Oct 4 1776 died Sept 16 1845 they had 11 Children
5.Mary Rutledge married William Erwin
6. Lucy Rutledge married John Allison Jr.
7. Sarah Rutledge married George McNeeley

On May 23 1763 George the Third, Granted to Edward Rutledge, a parcel of  land
containing twenty six acres lying and being some nine miles from Staunton,
Virginia
at what has been since called New Hope Church.
In the Deed Index Books of Augusta County Virginia are records of Deeds
covering the real estate transactions of this Edward Rutledge.
They are as follows
1. Nov 22 1753 Edward Rutledge purchased a property Flag Spring, from
William Kerr.
It was part of 250 acres of land pateneted to William Kerr, Sept 5 1749,  and
situated on
Middle River. Edward Rutledge occupied Flag Spring as his home for over 33
years. Here his seven children were born and reared and here he died Feb 18
1787.

2. August 17 1784 Edward and Sarah Rutledge deeded to their son, James
Rutledge, a
tract of land known as Black Oak Spring. No record has been found of its
purchase by
Edward Rutledge.

3. Dec 15 1786, a few months before the death of Edward, a period when
testator mush have been very ill, he and his wife deeded their home, Flag Spring
to George Rutledge, their youngest son. At that time, he was only 16 years  of age and
too young to administer it. Therefore, it was held in trust for him  by executor, David Stephenson, until July 20 1790, when he delivered to George  Shortly after his 21 birthday. Afther the death of Edward Rutledge, his widow Sarah continued to live in her old home with  their son, George, until she died in her 98 year.

I am  sure this has been on the list before, so will stop here.

More pages on this family, which I have copied if anyone is  interested.

HISTORY OF LICKING COUNTY. - 749
FRANKLIN TOWNSHIP.
RUTLEDGE, WILLIAM D., is a descendant of the Virginia  Rutledges, and was
born in Muskingum county, Ohio, June 27, 1827. His father  died when he was but
six years old, and he was obliged in early life to depend  chiefly upon his own
resources. At sixteen he learned the blacksmith trade, and  worked at it
about sixteen months. Afterwards he read medicine awhile in the  office of Dr.
Green, of Gratiot, this county. Mr. Rutledge had acquired a good  education by
private study and extensive reading, and at twenty began teaching,  a pursuit
which he found congenial to his taste, so much so that he continued to  teach
many years, having taught about twenty-five terms in different districts  in the
southeastern part of this county. As an illustration of the advanced cost  of
living, Mr. Rutledge states that he could procure boarding for seventy-five
cents per week when he first began to teach, but latterly paid three dollars
for  the same. He was married in 1853 to Rebecca A. Sigler, a native of
Hopewell  township. He located at Gratiot, but soon after came to this township,
where he  has since resided. In his early married life, when not engaged in
teaching; he  dealt extensively in sheep and cattle, having handled as many as three
thousand  head of sheep in one season. Of late he has given his attention
more to general  farming. In 1870 he was elected justice of the peace, and served
his township  creditably in this capacity for nine years. Mr. Rutledge has
five children:  Glenna F., Thomas V., Margaret E., Edward Sturges and James
William, all of whom  live with him at home.

Hello Cousins,

I have been quite busy and not really keeping up with the list and noticed some talk about the Augusta Co. VA line a week or so ago.. this is my line (Via the full line of Georges to Willam Newton)

Also note that several of them were ministers and moved about Illinois quite a bit once they got there.

I have a fairly decent database of them if anyone needs it.  Augusta Co has a very good on-line record of historic documents...  https://sites.rootsweb.com/~vaaugust/augusta2.html

Oh.... and if anyone has happened to find the elusive link between Edward Sr of VA and Dr. John while my head was busy with other things, send me a line?  (yah I know... but it is still worth trying )

According to information I have William Rutledge had moved from
Baltimore MD to Ohio Co., VA (now WVA) by 1810.  Wheeling is in Ohio
County.  They then moved on to Muskingum and Licking Counties, OH.
William's son, Zachariah was my gr.gr.grandfather.

The South Branch of the Potomac is in Hampshire and Hardy Counties, WVA
near Romney and Moorefield.  Mostly Germans settled along the South
Branch originally and I have a map of the area that was surveyed by the
fathers of Meriwether Lewis and Thomas Jefferson.  Also the young George
Washington.  No Rutledges were listed as owners at that time (1747).

AUGUSTA COUNTY VIRGINIA WITH ILLINOIS MENTIONED

Now it's been determined where in Augusta County, Virginia Edward
Rutledge
and Sarah Armstrong made their home (Black Oak Spring), it got me
looking at my
notes again.

We now know that Edward divided his land between two sons, James
Enos
(1768-1840?) and George B. (1770-1823). Beside James and George,
Edward and Sarah had
four daughters I know of:

Mary, who married William Erwin
Lucy, who married John Allison, Jr.
Rebecca, who married Charles Daugherty
Sarah, who married George McNeeley

I know nothing about these women, but James and George seem to have
come west
to Fulton Co., IL by 1840, since I have James Enos Rutledge dying
there about
that date. James married Eleanor Ralston, and George married Mary
Caldbreath.
Between them they had a number of children to also die in Fulton Co.

James's son, Elijah (1804-1856), married George's daughter, Rosannah
(1802-1877), as first cousins. Both were born in Augusta Co., VA and
died in Fulton
Co. IL.

A child of Elijah and Rosannah was James Edward Rutledge
(1834-1917), who in
turn was the father of my grandmother, Lois Elizabeth Rutledge, who
married
William Mason Danner, my grandfather.

Hello Everyone

I am fairly convinced that the Joseph Rutledge of Prince Edward Co.,
Virginia, and husband of Ann Atwood is the same Joseph Rutledge that
married Nancy Harden in Columbia Co., Georgia. I was hoping someone
could
give me a second opinion. Here is what I have so far.

DNA testing of descendants of Joseph, husband of Nancy, shows a
close link
to the Virginia Rutledges.

Both Josephs are said to be born about 1772. Joseph, husband of
Nancy was
born on Oct. 6, 1771.

Joseph Rutledge and Ann Atwood are in Virginia at least until they are
married on Aug. 29, 1793 in Prince Edward Co., Virginia. Then there
are no
more records of them. The first known record of Joseph, husband of
Nancy
is there marriage on Dec. 24, 1799. The timeline seems to fit, just
need
to fill in the missing years between 1793 and 1799.

Joseph Rutledge and Ann Atwood can be traced back to Prince Edward
Co.,
Virginia where they married. Both of there families lived in Prince
Edward
Co., Virginia. Nancy Harden can also be traced back to Lunenberg,
Virginia
where her family also lived around the same place and time. The
Rutledge,
Atwood, and Harden families probable all knew each other.

Both James Atwood, Ann's father and William Collins, Ann's
father-in-law
are mention on the marriage bond of Ann Atwood and Joseph Rutledge.

Martha McGehee (Jacob) was born January 12, 1749/50 in
Amelia,
Virginia. She married (1) James Atwood, son of James Atwood and
Mary
?. He was born ca.. 1731, and died Bef. October 1783. She married
(2)
William Collins October 30, 1783 in Prince Edward County, Virginia.
Children of Martha McGehee and James Atwood are:
i. Ann Atwood, born 1780. She married Joseph Rutledge, Jr. August
29,
1793 in Prince Edward County, Virginia; born ca.. 1772 in Virginia.

The marriage bond of Joseph Rutledge and Nancy Harden bonds Joseph
Rutledge
and William Atwood.

Here is my best translation of the marriage bond.

1799 - Rutledge, Joseph - Nancey Harden

Georgia, Know all men by these presents
that we Joseph Rutledge & William Attwood
are held & firmly bound unto the feawford Clerk
of this Court of Ordinary for the County of Columbia
to by ...... in O.... us the full sum of five
hundred dollars for which payment well & truly
to be made & .... we bind ourselves our heirs
jointly & severally firmly by these presents sealed with
our seals & dated this 24th day of December 1799.

The condition of the above obligation is
such that whereas this said Clerk of this Court
of Ordinary hath this day licensed any minister
of the Gospel or justice of the peace to join in the
Holy state of Matrimony the said Joseph
Rutledge of the one part and Nancey Harden
of the other part provided there be no lawful
cause to obstruct the sause & they this said
Joseph Rutledge & William Attwood do will I
truly save har.... the said Clerk & all I
way otterporion or ponsouy whatesoever then this
obligation to be void else to remain in full
force and virtue.
Joseph Routledge (seal)
Jesh Wm Atwood (seal)
. . Hamilton

William Atwood of Columbia Co., GA is linked to the Prince Edward Co.,
VA
Atwoods threw William Collins, father-in-law of Ann Atwood using the
following information.

ca. Mar 1803, James Atwood dies intestate, Virginia; property in
Columbia, GA;

15 Jul 1803, William Collins declined acting as administrator of the
estate of James Atwood and William Atwood granted Letter of
Administration
for estate of James Atwood, Columbia, GA;

My guess is that the James Atwood and William Atwood mentioned in
Columbia
Co., GA are brothers of Ann Atwood.

John-
Therein lies some of my frustration. Edward Crockett Rutledge (the source?
of oft repeated family lore that we are related to Davey Crockett) was born in
VA about 1817 (as best I can determine), married Martha (possibly a cousin),
shows up in IN census of 1850 with a son (William E.) born in Missouri. The
family Bible (I now have and want to restore) has many Rutledges dating back
to  the 1700's but without locations. The names and dates do little to help
with so  many Rutledges and so many common first names when the locations are not
 included.
I want to support others with similar "brick walls" because I believe that
one or two solid facts can bring down many walls.

The early census records unfortunately don't bother listing children's names and as a consequence I have yet to confirm (other than within the state of VA) Edward Crockett Rutledege's place of birth (based upon IN census records). His wife, Martha, shows no last name other than Rutledge, may have been a cousin, also shows VA birth but interestingly lists mother as having been born in TN.
I believe these Rutledges come from a line in Blacksburg/Christiansburg, VA but can, at this point, only speculate about the move from VA to IN that has a son born in MO. Did they plan to be part of a wagon-train leaving from MO headed west only to decide that it was too risky with a pending birth? Did they then choose to go back instead of VA to relatives in IN? Was this an escape from the coming war? There is so much one would like to know.
I would love to be able to tell my mother, now 88 yrs and failing, just because she would take some joy in knowing that her middle name was more than just her grandmother's last name.
Bob

I just came across a George P. Rutledge married to a Carrie W. McCurdy.
George was b. 1869 in VAa, and Carrie was b. 1874 in Va. They lived in
Philadelphia . They had 3 daughters, Francis C. b 2/1898 VA, Pauline b
8/1899 in Philadelphia & Carol b 1906 in Philadelphia.

Does anyone claim this George? They were in the 1900 & 1910 Philadelphia
Census.  I found them in the 1920 Cincinnati, Hamilton Co., Ohio census.

My great grandfather was a George Rutledge married to Ann McCurdy. I
just found that this Carrie W. McCurdy is in my McCurdy line. I was
hoping to find out that George P. was relation too, but so far I can't
piece anything together.  Jan

Bob..

I was just looking further at Rachel Clemon's data in the old Rutledge Family site... under "Rutledge" she lists an Edward Crockett Rutledge, b. Bef 1833 in VA.   Father listed as William E Rutledge, but no listing of his mother... it lists several siblings also... Robert Stewart, Malindy Catherine, Margaret Jane and Eliza Mary..  Notes indicate the info comes from the will of Edward Crockett's grandfather, Edward Rutledge, but doesn't cite where the will can be found.

Hope this might be a lead...  All my best... John Rutledge in Oregon

I have been casually researching Edward Crockett Rutledge, born in Virginia (Blacksburg area) ca 1817, eventually settled in Montgomery County Indiana (Shannondale) between 1840 and 1850, had a son William, born in Missouri. I have been unable to link ECR to his parents in Blacksburg nor have I been able to determine exactly when he left Virginia, how he managed to be in Missouri, and when he arrived in Indiana. Family records show a William as father but no documentation.
Do you have any information on this particular Rutledge?
By the way, there appears to be an Edward P. Rutledge, also from Virginia who settled just down the road in Indiana (Boone County) about the same time. EPR is burried across the county line in Shannondale, Montgomery County, IN.

Jan,
Because the Rutledge family does not appear on one book, does that mean the
Rutledge family was not there?

Lyman Chalkley, who extracted records for Augusta County court records lists
numerous records relating to the Rutledge family.  It is online.

My direct relative Sarah Rutledge, m. George McNeely ca. 1781.  She was d/o
Edward Rutledge and wife Sarah Armstrong who m. March 1749/50 at Flagg
Springs, Augusta Co., VA  I have his will dated 1-1-1787 in which he names
children.  He was s/o Thomas and Jean Armstrong Rutledge, I have his will
also.

Flagg Springs, is the name of the plantation where the Rutledge Family
lived, and until recently was still in the hands of the family.  I believe
it has now passed out of family hands.

This Rutledge family married into McNeely, and George's daughter Nancy
married my ancestor John Small.  I've been to both Staunton and
Charlottsville,

"The Tinkling Spring: Headwater of Freedom"  p.481 lists Thomas Rutledge and
children who were baptized at the congregation (Tinkling Spring Meeting
House, Augusta Co.) Children John, 1- Mar 1744; George 3 Feb 1745;
Elisabeth, Nov. 1746; and James 29 Jan 1749.  The Rutledge family also
appear in Montgomery and Botetourt County records in later years.

My Edward Rutledge's children went to IL, but I've not researched them all,
and many I have no idea what direction they went.... some of Edwards
siblings apparently went to NC and likely from there went west.

 Hi Donna,
Thanks for this information. I guess your book makes the point that
Caleb was likely born in Virginia, since he came from there. It's too
bad the book couldn't have been more specific and narrowed it down to
the county in Virginia he came from. I've got a feeling since he was
married in Claiborne County,Tennessee in 1843 that he or some of his
sibling's may have been living in Claiborne prior to the 1850 census.
Like possibly the 1840 Claiborne County,Tennessee census. Let me know
if you run across anything else that you might think I would find of
 interest.
 Thank you, Bill

I received these notes from Liz Yost off list.  I suggested to her
that she join the mail list and ask about this line.  She indicated
that she would.

Does anyone know about this line?

Can you please tell me about the Edward Rutledge referenced in your
message regarding "Rutledge Surname DNA"?  I have a friend descended
from Thomas Rutledge of VA (died 1793).  Are you aware of any others
on the Rutledge list who share this heritage?  Liz Yost
[email protected]

The Edward Rutledge in her line was born 1761 and died in 1836,
married Ann Gillespie.  These Rutledge families centered around
Montgomery Co., VA, Augusta Co., VA and then to Washington Co, MO on
the way to California.

Rutledge in Virginia: George 1690-1752 may be the right generation to have
delt with William Kerr so we may have a documented lineage there.

Around 1775 or so a British officer in a barfight stabbed a Rutledge to
death with his sword.

Unfortunately I don't have a citation of the full name of the victim or the
town in which it happened, or the date, but it had to have happened before
the British were defeated in Virginia.....else the British officer would not
have been in that bar after 1776.

If related at all, the victim could have been a son or nephew of George
Rutledge.

Have you seen any information about that murder?

Subject: Re: [RUTLEDGE] Grahams

The fact that George Rutledge (1690-1752) emigrated from Tyrone to Augusta
County, VA, got me thinking again about that house in Virginia I inquired
 about
last week. It is called "Black Oak Spring" and still stands about a half
 mile
west of New Hope in Augusta Co., VA.

I have a copy of an 1980 brochure written about this place. It states that
 in
1763, George III gave a grant of land consisting of 26 acres to a certain
William Kerr. It goes on to say:

"Kerr sold a sizable amount of acreage to Edward Rutledge, who had
 emigrated
from northern Ireland where he had been born about 1725. It was thought he
came to America between 1735-1740. Married to Sarah Armstrong, he had
 fathered
six children. In 1784 he and his wife had given 142 acres to his eldest
 son,
James. This land, on Middle River, included the 'Black Oak Spring'
 property."

This Edward Rutledge the brochure (written by one Gladys B. Clem) speaks
 of
was the grandson of the George Rutledge mentioned above (birth dates
 approximate):

 George Rutledge (1690-1752) father of
 Thomas Rutledge (1710-1791) father of
 Edward Rutledge (1730-1787)

The James to whom Edward have given land (much more than he had bought
 from
Kerr) is James Enos Rutledge (1768-1848), who is in my direct line. The
 year
before his death, Edward gave the rest of his property to James' brother
 George
 (1770-1824).

An interesting footnote is that a son of James Enos and a daughter of
 George,
first cousins, married each other. Keeping thing within the family, so to
 speak.

Anyone been to New Hope, VA?

 Peter

Subject: [RUTLEDGE] Peter Rutledge Lineage on the Rutledge Surname DNA Project

 Kirk - Karen and Wendy,

In November Kirk  wrote about his line - KIT 24555.

Hi, Kirk Rutledge here. My wife is the one who receives and sends the
genealogy info...I just supplied the cheek swab! No, seriously, she's been
trying to figure out how to upload info to the website, or maybe she just
hasn't had time to do it.

I track my earliest ancestor to Peter Rutledge NC/VA (about 1780). We are
on vacation so I don't have access to our files. Lineage goes Peter
 -Lafayette-Mathias-Jesse Perle-Keith Carlos-Gary Keith-me. Sometime around
Jesse Perle our family moved to Iowa. I moved to Oregon in 1985.

 Happy Thanksgiving!

 Kirk

Could we talk about your line a little more?

Your 25/25 exact match with mine and Noah's results warrant more
investigation, particularly since Noah's ancestor was also Peter
Rutledge in the same time frame.

Noah's ancestor Peter was, we think, the son of my William in Stokes
 Co., NC.

Have you talked to Wendy who supplied the information about Noah's
 line?

From my research, your James b. 1745 in VA is a
brother to my William b. 1732.  Seems as though they
were from Amelia and Prince George Co., VA.  Their
father was possibly James Rutledge b. 1711 Lunenburg
VA son of Thomas? b. bef 1715 d. 1741.  From there I
have a brickwall.  Is there any more info that might
be useful to you?  I have a GEDCOM of all my info that
I can send you.

 Hi everybody,

I've been too busy to breathe much lately--haven't

Ken, congrats--you're not only OUR newest member,
 but the highest number  yet
achieved by FTDNA!  (There are people watching such
things and I was  able to
 report you as "top dog"!)

There are at least 4 new members I'm just not up on.
  And one is  related to
me!  It may be that you folks have posted your lines
 while the  Rootsweb
servers were down (the last week and a half) but if
you haven't done  so, would you
please?  All of us will be interested to see your
 ancestral  line--and Mike
can then add your details to his wonderful website
 _http://home.comcast.net/~rutledgedna/_
 (http://home.comcast.net/~rutledgedna/) ...

Ron, thanks for answering folks when they have
 questions; you have it all
exactly right.  There is now a 37-marker test
 available.  Those who  have
perfect matches at 12 or 25 may want to upgrade to
 help refine the  relationships
among lines. (I'd really like to see some thoughts
on how Group 1  is related!
There are so many of you!)

My own group is thru James Rutledge and Ann Owen and
 we have a fair  sampling
also.  Patrick, you seem to be kin--we all thought
 William was  related to us
but I'm interested in how many mutations we still
 have.  More  work needs to
be done!  I personally am willing to help sponsor a
 descendant of Dudley
Rutledge (son of James and Ann) - or any other
direct  descendant of a son of
James and Ann--or James' reputed parents
 (James/Mary) or  the 1/2 family
 (James/Sarah or Thomas/Mary!)
 --------------------------
For anyone interested, Family Tree DNA is offering 4
 specials right  now--and
I'm sorry to say I don't have details. But here's
 what they are:

One is a way to contribute to a fund for others
 to  test (great idea, but
I just sponsor others).  Will be set up in our
 sytem--good incentive!
 (Christmas presents?)
One is an offer to refine the Haplogroup--one
 fee,  unlimited testing
until subclade is determined.  This is good for
 those who  are actually looking
into deep genealogy and origins--like me!  (Expires
at end of month, I think)
One is an offer to add on maternal testing for
 anyone who's done the
Y-line.  I like this and recommend it for those will
  elderly parents or
grandparents (or aunts and great-aunts!).  Get that
maternal DNA on file while you
can!  Right now it's not as popular as the  paternal
 surname lines, but as more
is learned, it's the maternal DNA that will  tell us
 our deep ancestry...
(expires at end of month, I think)
Hmmm, what's the 4th?  Oh, a new chart offered
 for sale on the
 Haplogroup relationships...
 ------------------------
This is a bit disjointed and I apologize - trying to
 cover a lot of ground
 in not much time.

By the way--do we actually have any participants
 from the Signers'  line?
Maybe one of you out there who think you're
 connected  but don't have a
Rutledge male to test would like to contribute to
the Signers'  fund!  Heck, I will!
We really need to get their line into our  project
so we can all rule in or
 rule out...

 Happy Turkey Day everyone!

Jean Rutledge, b. Augusta Co., VA m. Jonathan Brooks Montgomery Co. VA.  Does anyone have further information on their descendants?  Jean was the daughter of George and Nelly Gamble Rutledge's son, Thomas.  See below:
  -----
  9. MAJOR ROBERT RUTLEDGE,
who was born in Augusta County, Virginia on October 13, 1764. Robert was an ensign under Colonel Shelby at the battle of King’s Mountain. He married Catherine Crockett (who was born on November 18, 1771) on March 24, 1795. On October 4, 1796 Robert was commissioned a Major in the Tennessee militia. Catherine died in Sullivan County, Tennessee in 1839, and Robert died in Sullivan County on September 16, 1853.

  Robert was the son of

  10. WILLIAM RUTLEDGE,
who was born in County Tyrone, Ireland in 1728. He married Elinor Caldwell (who was born in County Cavan, Ireland) in 1751. In 1763 they immigrated to either Baltimore, Maryland or Charleston, South Carolina, eventually settling at Tinkling Springs in Augusta County, Virginia. In 1777 they moved to White Top Creek in Sullivan County, Tennessee. During the revolution, William served as a private in the 9th Regiment of Continental North Carolina Line. He died in 1790.

  William was the son of

  11. GEORGE RUTLEDGE,
who was born in Scotland in 1690. Being Presbyterian dissenters from the established church, his family emigrated to County Tyrone, Ireland. There he married Nelly Gamble (daughter of William Gamble, chief of a Highland clan).

Two questions among many: 1)parents of my earliest James and Sarah
                                          2) why so many on-line trees list Susan Brooks as Robert Kennedy Rutledge's wife
                                           - was he married twice?

Thought I'd check again to see if anyone knows anything about the following
Charlotte County VA Rutledges:

I am trying so hard to put this family with my Rutledge family in
Jefferson County.  By your memo, I am to assume there is no connection
and that the SC Rutledges were by-passed by your VA Rutledges?  Family
trees are never neat!
(I do Mullins and in Lawrence CO in 1820-there are 3 different Mullins
families plus a Mullenix family--none related on this side of the pond!
Who would have thought that so many different people with one name could
collect in one rural county in MS?)  Thanks for the reply.  Kate

Hi Kate,

Joseph and Dudley (and John, Thomas, Sally, Jane, Jmaes, William Owen &
Nancy!) were children of James Rutledge (ca1744-ca1824) and Ann Owen (ca
1750-Apr
1837).  They were from VA but died in Wilkes Co and Troup Co, GA,
respectively.

hope this helps!

Greetings fellow researchers,

For many years I have shared my genealogical research with the folks on
the COWAN, WIGTON-WALKER, and SCOTCH-IRISH rootsweb lists.    The trail
leads from Sterling, in Scotland, to Londonderry-Donegal in Ulster, to
Pennsylvania, the valley of Virginia, east Tennessee and points west.    If your
ancestors followed a similar path then some of these documents might be of
interest.    I have searched for rare, out of print source materials as both a
hobby and an obsession and have offered to make copies for people from time to
time.    Because of a busy schedule I will only be able to do so once a
year. I have added two new items since last time and they are described with the
others below beginning with the most recent history first:

Castle's Woods:    Frontier Virginia Settlement, 1769-1799, a thesis
presented to the Faculty of the Department    of History, East Tennessee
State University in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the Degree of
Master of Arts, by James W. Hagy, 1966, 150 pages.
This covers the families who settled in Russell and Scott
counties, Virginia when it was considered the frontier.    Contains
information on specific families as well as the farmers, speculators, artisans, and
preachers who resided there.    Lots on the Indian battles that were a daily
feature of life on the frontier.

Tthe Tinkling Spring:    Headwater of Freedom, A Study of the Church
and Her People, 1732-1952, by Howard McKnight Wilson, 1954, Fisherville,
Virginia, 542 pages.
The BEST source of information on the Scotch-Irish of
Augusta/Rockbridge Counties in Virginia.    Includes the Baptismal Records of
the Rev. Craig.    In-depth study of the early families of the Shenandoah
Valley.

Rockbridge County, Virginia Notebook, Compiled from articles by Dr.
George W. Diehl as published in the News-Gazette, Lexington, Virginia.
Compiled by A. Maxim Coppage, McDowell Publications, 1982, 242 pages.
"In many instances information may be found showing where
families originated in Scotland or Ireland, the places lived before settling
in Rockbridge County, Virginia area and relationships between the various clans
or as Mr. Diehl so aptly named this phase of pioneering, "A ROCKBRIDGE
SEED-BOX"
This document is almost 100% pure family history and genealogy.

The Rev. Samuel Houston, V.D.M., by George West Diehl, 1970, McClure
Publishing Co. 125 pages
History of the early Virginia Presbyterians through the life of the
Rev. Samuel Houston, kin to Sam Houston of Texas fame.

A Tribute to the Principles, Virtues, Habits and Public Usefulness of
the Irish and Scotch Early Settlers of Pennsylvania, Chambersburg, Pa. Printed
by M. Kiefer & Co. 1856, 171 pages.
From the preface the following:    "The writer of the
Tribute contained in this work, had long desired to see from the Historical
publications in Pennsylvania, a vindication of the character and principles of the
Irish and Scotch early settlers of this great state and their descendants
against reproach, as well as aspersion, cast upon them in some modern
publications having pretensions to Historical accuracy...

The Scotch-Irish in the Colonies:    1750-1790:    A Thesis Presented
for the Degree of Master of Arts, by Kathryn R. Aiken, A.B., The Ohio State
University, 1933, 91 pages
Chapters include:    By way of Introduction, Early
Settlements, Daily Life on the Frontier, Educational and Religious Activities, Military
Pursuits, Political Participation and Conclusion.    Like Hagy's Castle
Woods thesis it has a wonderful bibliography, the most important part of any
research document.

The Laggan and its Presbyterianism and In the Days of the Laggan
Presbytery, 1905, 1908, by the Rev. Alexander Lecky, B.A., member of the Royal
Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Belfast, Davidson and McCormack, 54 Kings St.
 211 pages
On our recent trip to Donegal we met J.B. Shannon, age 90,
who assisted in the 1975 reprinting of this book.    He is the last living
person who had anything to do with these books and he says they are still the
BEST source for Ulster Presbyterian research.    From Lecky the
following:    "The lists of names of former generations of Lagganeers, and their places
of abode, that are given in the Appendixes, and which NEVER before appeared in
print, whilst they may of necessity prove dull reading to those who have no
acquaintance with the locality, will not, I hope, be altogether uninteresting
to those who bear the same name, or live in the same places....

A History of the Siege of Londonderry and Defense of Enniskellen in 1688
and 1689, with Historical Poetry and Biographical notes, by the Rev. John
Graham, M.A. Rector of Magilligan in the Diocese of Derry.    Includes the
Battles of the Boyne, Athlone, and Aughrim and the siege and Capitulation of
Limmerick by Lord McCaulay, Toronto, 1869
The historical poems are family genealogies about those
who were at Derry and where they came from.    Along with "Fighters of Derry"
these two sources contain more actual genealogical information than any others
I have seen.

Fighters of Derry, Their Deeds and Descendants, being a Chronicle of
Events in Ireland during the Revolutionary period, 1688-1691, by William Young,
Eyre and Spottiswoode, London, 350 pages.
One of the most difficult sources to locate. (WorldCat
Inter-Library lists seven known copies)    Months worth of reading and packed
with great genealogy.    Contains the following biographical sketches:
            1.    The leaders of the County Associations who, with
their levies, took part in the preliminary operations and contributed much of
the man power for the Defence.
   2.    The Apprentice Boys and those responsible for shutting the
gates on the 8th Dec. 1688.
   3.    The actual Defenders during the 105 day siege ((over 12000
genealogical sketches)
   4.    Those engaged in the relief of the city.

Three Hundred Years in Innishowen, Being More Particularly an Account of
the Family of Young of Culdaff with Short Accounts of Many Other Families
Connected with Them, by Amy Young, The Linenhall Press, Belfast, 1929, 311 pages
Some of the names included are Young, Hart, Harvey, Cary,
Vaughan, McLaughlin, Skipton, Richardson, Knox, Ussher, Smith, Nesbitt,
Chichester, Ball, Lawrence, Crofton, Boyd, Stuart and many others.

The Laggan and its People, by S.M. Campbell, privately printed.
Ms. Campbell lived on the next farm over from my friend
James Fleming in St. Johnston, Donegal.    A look at the history of the Laggan
(Presbyterian Derry/Donegal) through the eyes of a local historian.
Draws on local lore, Abercorn papers, records from PRONI.

Well there you have it.    The best documents I have found during my
ten years of research.    If you are interested in obtaining any of the above
items please contact me privately for details.    I do charge to recover
copying and postage costs which is permissible under rootsweb policy.

Anita,

It sounds like the connection does go back to the elusive Jackson Middleton
Rutledge.  And actually you know about as much as we do. I haven't been able to
find a trace of the rascal and neither has anyone else I know of.  I've been
wondering if his name got scrambled in that SC Rutledge Kith and Kin book where
he is listed. His wife is guessed to be the Sarah Rutledge listed as living
next to Thomas Rutledge in one of the Hawkins' CO. TN census (1830 or 1840) I
can't remember.  Thomas Rutledge (according to census) was born in VA in 1803.
So we could be dealing with Jackson Middleton Rutledge being an older brother
and  David Weldon Rutledge a younger though that does kill the theory that
Edward (the signer) Rutledge was Jackson's father.

Don't we have a descendent of John Rutledge (Edward's brother) on this list?
Anyone know if he has done the DNA bit. It would solve the mystery of if we are
descended from those brothers.

I'm fascinated that we're connected. I just can't figure out where. It goes
past both our brick walls. Maybe with prayer and luck - we'll hit a chink in
our walls somewhere.

Julie

 Hi Cousin Julie,
I know we are related somewhere down the Rutledge line, because DNA
doesn't lie.  This is why we went to the DNA testing route, is because
we were at a stand-still and we believe it is the only way we are going
to break down the brick wall we are against. So happy to hear from you,
we are so excited to know that we have a lead to find new cousins.
We are going to have to go back farther than Stephen W. Rutledge, to
join our Rutledge family together.  Stephen was born around 1833 and our
David was born around 1790 in N.C.(can only go by date in 1850
Rutherford Co., Tn. census).  David married Angeline Williamson on the 4
th. of July 1816 in Rutherford Co., Tn.  This is the first record we can
find with his name on it.  He died in Gibson Co., Tn. the 29 May 1844.
They had 15 children and raised 13 of them. They are: Coleman, Monroe
(our GGrandfather),  Angeline, Martha, Susan, James, Nancy, David,
Beverly, Benjamin, Robert, Samuel, Ary and 2 unnnamed babies.
Since our David and Jackson Middleton Rutledge were born within two
years of each other, it could be they were either brothers or cousins.
I don't have the information of where Jackson Middleton was born or
died. All I have on him is the year he was born (1777) and was
married to Sarah Lucy Singleton. And had  three children, Lorenco Dow,
 Emanuel and Thomas.
Our Grandfather John Joel Rutledge (Grandson of David) told his
children what his parents had told him, "In the beginning there were 7
Rutledge brothers who came from the border of England and Ireland and
landed in N.Y. and they scattered out into the Eastern States".  Grandpa
also told his kids, when the Rutledges lived in Tn.,   "Anytime or
anywhere you met another person named Rutledge, they were kinfolks".
Another thing that was handed down from generation to generation in our
Rutledge family, is we are related to the signers of,  "The Decoration
of Independence", and "The Constitution", and also related to Ann
Rutledge, who was the sweetheart of Abe Lincoln.  We have believed all
of this to be true, because we don't believe our Grandfathers would be
telling their Children and Grandchildren this otherwise. Back in the
older days, story telling was the only way parents and grandparents
could pass on their family history.  Each one of them would tell their
Children and Grandchildren about their life and their Grandparents life
as far back and they knew.  Most of the people back before the 1900's
never had the chance to get an education, so most of them couldn't read
or write down their family history, they could only pass it down to
their chidren by telling them as much as they could remember about their
 life.
If you have any more info on Jackson Middleton Rutledge, I would like
to know. And too,  I don't have much on some of John B. Rutleldge's
children.  I don't have anything on Eliza, Olive, Oritha, Rosa or Nancy.
I notice they have some of the same names as our Rutledge's do.
Let's keep in touch.  Thanks again for the information and so happy to
 have found a new cousin.

Prince Edward County, VIRGINIA 1742 to 1751

Hello,
I found the following reference:
Virginia Land Records, one of a set of volumes put together from VA Magazine
of History and Biography and William & Mary Quarterly.
Early Settlers of Prince Edward Co., p.400
Mary Rutledge 7-30-1742 253 [acres] Sandry R.
James Rutledge 1-12-1746 100 [acres] Sandy R.
Richard Rutledge 9-20-1751 274 [acres] Sandy R.

Does anyone know if these Rutledges are connected to the family of Edward
Rutledge of Augusta county and his wife Sarah Armstrong of Flagg Springs?
Also, does anyone have any information on the parents of Edward, alleged to
be Thomas Rutledge and Jean Armstrong? Grandparents???

[James Rutledge, b. c. 1671 and m/1 Sarah, m/2 Mary 1717. Lived in Lunenburg Co., VA. Children included: John, Richard, William, Thomas, Joseph, James.]

I read the above and it was suggested that I try this group again...
Would anyone have any info. on the following:

Richard, Lucretia, John, David, William and Sarah purchased 100 acres of land by indenture in 1792 in Charlotte Co., VA.  They purchased it from Richard Blanton.  Richard R. was born approx. 1770 in Prince Edward Co. and David (My direct line) was born apporx. 1780 in Pr. Ed. Co.  Richard married Jenny Milam and Mary Newcomb.  David married Synthey Hundley.  William married Polly Hamblin.  I believe Wm. possibly moved to Franklin Co., VA with Hamblins.  John married Sally Loggins.  I believe he is the John who went to Tennessee in the early 1800's.  He is possibly the same John who killed a Wm. Loggins in Tennessee.

I believe, but don't have proof that their parents were John and Clary Rutledge.  Property taxes at Ch. C. H.  show "Jno. Rutledge estate" for sev. yrs. in the 1790's.  When it doesn't have him, it shows Clary (or Clara) Rutledge having property.  I also find the above boys listed.  These and Thomas Rutledge are the only Rutledges I find in Ch. Co. during that time.

I have looked in Charlotte, Prince Edward, and Lunenburg Co's but find no record of a marriage between a John and Clary Rutledge.  I know they are connected based on an indenture with both their names.  Does anyone have any ideas or words of wisdom that may help?

By the way, would someone be willing to post the James and Sarah info. again.  Wasn't she married before to a Thomas who had died and possibly had children by him?

 Thanks,

 Linda (Southside VA)

Dear List,
Just received this email from a newly discovered Rutledge-Baugher
cousin
from Elizabeth Rutledge line.  Elizabeth J. Rutledge was the daugher of
Lorenzo Dow Rutledge b.1813 VA and Polly/Mary Molsby of TN.  She says that
part of the TN Rutledge line ended up in SE MO and then to Blytheville, AR as
Baughers (pronounced Boyer in our line), as well as So. IL that I knew of in
Hardin County, IL.
Has anyone found any more info or proof on Jackson Middleton
Rutledge
line since Patsy asks about that too?

Dear Barbara,
I found your query tonight in browsing the web. I have not researched
the Rutledge line for several years, but I am also a descendent of Lorenzo
Dow and Mary. I am a descendent of Elizabeth Rutledge and John Jacob Baugher.
I do have some information gleamed from census and marriage records and also
a copy of a bible record of  Lorenzo and Mary that were in my great uncle
(Eddie Baugher) possession. I am really interested in the information that
Lorenzo was the son of Jackson Middleton Rutledge. Do you have some type of
document or is this hear say information?
My grandfather, Thomas Valentine Baugher and his family came to the
bootheel of Missouri and then on to Blytheville, Mississippi County,
Arkansas. Elizabeth's
brother William Epsome Rutledge died 26 March 1942 in Pemiscot County,
Missouri. William and wife Mary M. were found in the 1910 Pemiscot Co. Mo.
Census. William was 53-TN, Mary M. 50-IL. Census stated that Mary had 10
children with 7 living. Only one daughter, Cend age 9-IL was listed in the
household.
In 1920 Pemiscot Co. MO Little Prairie PCT was age 60-IL, widow and had some
grandchildren listed in her household.
I will be happy to share what little information I have with you.
Again I am
really interested in the parents of Lorenzo Dow. I did find the marriage
date for Lorenzo and Mary. They were married 29 Jan 1835 Hawkins County,
Tennessee. The records are located in the Early East Tennessee Marriage
Records.
Looking forward to hearing from you.

Hi Tina,  I hope I can tell you this straight...My husband Jack's
grandparents were Robert and Mae Rutledge Kiger, she being the daughter
of Stephen and Mary Massey Rutledge.  Robert and Mae's daughter Helen
Maxine married Jack's father Harlan Pollitt.  On the other side,Harlan's
sister Jessie married Grover Mullins who was son of Caleb and Bell
Watson Mullins.  There were 8 children of Caleb and Bell.  Bell was the
daughter and 2nd child of Zachariah and Nancy Ann Rutledge
Watson,daughter of Abraham Rutledge.
According to my info which I received just last week from Jack's cousin
who obtained it from the Rutledge reunion in Danville,Il. Abraham
Rutledge,1786-1840 was born in South Carolina and after spending on year
in N.C. moved to KY in 1798.  He remained in Kentucky,a prosperous
farmer until 1834,he moved his family together with his brother John
Rutldege and sisters, Ruth and Mary Rutledge and came to Vermilion Co.
Il  He married twice, his first wife bing Mary Huffman, and his second
wife Barabara Deck.  He had  11 Children survive him He is burried in
1840  in the cemetary on Hazel St. Danville,Il.
So you see, we are related to Rutledges on both sides.
Hope this helps!! It was just funny that we received this just a few
days ago.  It is the Michael - Rutledge family.

I have a Dudley Adkinson Rutledge b. 1772-1775 in Virginia and married Rachel Glass.  Then there's a Dudley Adkins
Rutledge b. November 4, 1813 in Richmond County, GA  He was the nephew of the first one.  He was son of William Owen
Rutledge.  He was married about four times and I'm sure had children, but I don't know them yet.   I can only guess
that the name carried on down either with Dudley #2 or a brother.

I thought that you would enjoy reading this letter from Joseph Sadler Rutledge to his wife Nancy Catherine Cowan during the Civil War.

Joseph's information from the Civil War military records:

Rutledge, Joseph R., Pvt. Co. H, 8th La. Inf. En. March 8, 1862, Rapices Par., La. Roll to June 30, 1862, Absent, sick, at Lynchburg, since May 20, 1862.  Roll to Aug. 31, 1862, Present.  Roll Sept. and Oct., 1862, Absent, missing since ----.  Roll Nov. and Dec., 1862.  Absent, wounded. Roll Jan. and Feb., 1863, Killed at Sharpsburg, Sept. 17, 1862.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

February 3rd, 1862
College Hospital, Lynchburg, Virginia

My very dear and true Kitty,

You see from the head of my letter that I am still in the hospital, but thanks to my God I am on the mend.  My hearing is still getting better.  Still too weak to do much walking.  My dear Kitty, I am cheered almost every day by good tidings from our war department, but it seems that never again am I to be cheered up by that sweetest of news from home until it pleases God and my country to return me to that sweetest of places on this earth, Home.  Now I look forward with buoyant hope for that bright day that shall soon speak peace to our glorious Confederacy and return its happy sons in safety to the bosom of their dear families.  Should the good God of Heaven continue to smile on our cause as he has done I doubt not but that day is not far distant.  Dear Kitty, help us to pray that it may speedily arrive.
We have doubtless gained the greatest victory near Richmond lately that we ever have gained.  I cannot enter into particulars.  The amount of property estimated two days ago as captured from the enemy was $5,000,000 besides about 3,500 prisoners.  The fight still goes on.  Our army having the Yankees so surrounded that it is very difficult for them to make an effectual escape.  Have captured a no. of their Generals and officers of different rank.  The supposition is that their entire army here is broke up.  Our people here are all in high spirits.  It is still cold here.  I can wear my warmest clothes today.
You don't know how hard a time I have in this hospital.  You know I have been used to an active life and to be cramped up in one place as I am you know it must be confining, but thanks to God that it is no worse.  I reckon I am favored above what I deserve by the Almighty.  My dear Kitty, I hope that you will never forget to pray for one that thinks so much of you and the dear little ones around you.
I wrote you in my last letter of the death of our beloved nephew Robert Chafin, but for fear the letter never reached you I will insert it here again.  He died on the 23rd day of June.  The Doctor says of typhoid pneumonia, but I think he died more of salivation than any thing else.  Tell Mrs. Routon that I can never hear from our company so that I can give her no news from John.  Give my best wishes to Bettison and family and tell them that I can't make a raise of paper enough to do but very little writing.  I would be glad to write to them, Wm, L, & Brother Nugent but can't at present.  This is my last scrap of paper.  If you get a chance send my very best love to our dear Mother.  Tell her that I have written to her but have dispaired of hearing from any of you until times are changed.  I write this letter calculating that it is paper lost for I don't expect you will get it, but I will try by every possible means to give some news of me as I know your heart yearns to hea!
r from me.
When you write to the Par's people tender my best wishes to them and ask them to pray for me that it may please the good God to favor me with a safe return to the bosom of the family I dearly love.
And now for the dear little children, what shall I say to them?  O that I could tell them how much I think of them.   How often I pray for them and beg God to spare all of their little lives until I can once more see them.  Could they know this they would try to be good children, kind to each other and loving and obedient to their dear mother.  O Kitty, for my sake try to teach the good precepts and may the good God of heaven help you and bless you all.  Tell Many not to neglect his hogs.  There is no telling what they will be worth.  Take care of all of Par's things and be a good boy.  Tell Ursula for Par's sake to be a good girl and Par will come home as soon as I can if God spares me.  Bless the children and tell Alva and Ida to be good to each other.  Kiss them all many times for me.
Winbern is now sick.  He has the yellow jaundice.  I believe the fever with that.  He has kept his bed for one or two days.  I will do the best I can for him.  He helped me out a great deal when I was sick last time.
Kitty, try to write often as you can.  It may be that I will get a letter after a while.  O how it would cheer me up.  Direct to Lynchburg, care Dr. Smith.  Farewell, Dear, for the present.  Hoping that this may soon reach you and God may bless you.  I am still your true husband until death shall sever the tie.

James Rutledge was married to Ann Owen.  I know that Lucile Fleming Artly Davis' SAR papers state that James' wife was Ann Hicks but this is incorrect. I have a transcribed copy of the will of Thomas Owen, leaving part of his estate to his daughter Ann Rutledge.  I also have copies of other documents relating to a court case in VA involving the heirs of Thomas Owen.  These documents are too lengthy to publish here but I will be glad to send a copy to anyone who wishes to have them.  After studying them carefully, I believe you will reach the same conclusion that I have - that James Rutledge was married to Ann Owen.

Cousins,
I found this information in Zella Armstrong's "Notable Southern Families"
Vol. V, originally printed at Chattanooga TN in 1928.  She was a professional
genealogists who with several assistants researched several southern families
with prominent members.  In researching the roots and descendants of David
Crockett (the famous Davy) she recorded the following:
CATHERINE CROCKETT (dau. of Samuel Jr.)
Born Nov. 18, 1771, Augusta Co. (now Wythe), Va.; m. Robert RUTLEDGE , Mar.
24, 1795.  He a son of William Rutledge* and Eleanor Caldwell, both of
Ireland.

*George Rutledge, born in Scotland, was a Presbyterian and a dissenter of the
Episcopal church (Church of England, the official church).  On account of
Cromwell's War (the English Civil War and aftermath, 1642 to 1660) he and his
family removed to Ireland.  He married Nelly Gamble, a descendant  of Joseph
Gamble, who emigrated from Londonderry, Ireland, to Winchester, Va.
The eldest of George Rutledge and Nellie Gamble was William, b. in Tyrone
Co., Ireland in 1728, and married Elinor Caldwell (b. in Cavan Co., Ireland)
in Augusta Co., Va. 1751.  They moved with their family of three girls and
two boys to Sullivan Co., Tenn. in 1777.
Their youngest son Robert married Catherine Crockett of this sketch; Robert's
brother, George was in the Revolutionary War and fought in the battle of
King's Mtn.  He married Annis Armstrong.  (This family of Rutledge moved from
Scotland to America, some going to Virginia, some to the Carolinas.)

Robert RUTLEDGE served as an ensign in the battle of King's Mountain under
Gen. Shelby.

There is a genealogy of the descendants of Nelly Rutledge and George Keyes if
anyone is interested, I will pass it on, too.  Next, I will pass on the
descendants of William RUTLEDGE (son of Robert)  I don't want to make this
too long for one day.

Virginia Rutledge searchers, Searching another line of mine, I ran across a website
that just might show a connection to Mary Paschal, wife of Joseph Rutledge.

There are a few surnames that match up to other branches in my tree and the closeness of the areas
seems to indicate a possible link-up, at least something to further investigate.

Will post what I found and the researcher's data, and anyone interested should be
able to get in
touch with her if your line connects with this family.  The connection
with New Jersey and
Pennsylvania also seems to connect with our Virginia Rutledges.  Perhaps
the famiiles can
connect in some way..

I have been in contact with her via e-mail but have not heard back yet
on what she might know about
Mary Paschall and if she has anything on Rutledge connection.  Am hoping
to hear back from her soon.
If anything can be added will definitely let you all know.

I am looking for info on Nancy Rutledge, dau. of Joseph rutledge, who m.
William Davis, 5 Jan. 1788 in Pr. Edward Co. Va.  Joseph Rutledge in 1785 Pr.
Edward Co. census shows,10 white souls, 1 dwelling, and 2 other buildings.  In
1787 Pr. Edw. census, Joseph Rutledge showed himself, 3 slaves +16, 4 slaves
-16, 4 horses and 17 cattle.  In Sept. 1773 Joseph Rutledge transferred land
to Runford DeJarnette in Pr. Edward Co. Va.

I hace done extensive research in So. Side Va. counties, Amelia, Pr. Edward,
Luenburg, etc. but have been unable to connect my antecedents, Joseph and
Mary Rutledge, b. 1770, and 1775, SC to any of these Rutledges.

On Dec.7,1818--A Land grant was made to (my) Joseph Rutledge,
Abbeville,District,S.C. 120 acres on a branch of Saluda river, certified on
Oct.20,1818.  Adjoined land of William Davis,Thomas Donaldson, ,
Thos.Norwood, Benj.Maddox.  S.C.Plat Book,Vol.45, P.362.

Is this the Wm. Davis that m. Nancy Rutledge dau. of Joseph Rutledge of Pr.
Edward Co. Va?  I do not know the maiden name of Joseph's wife Mary.  However
in 1830 John Davis was living with Joseph and Mary Rurtledge in Gwinnett Co.
Ga. and applied for an received a pension as a R.S.  He was b. in 1730,
enlisted April 1777 at Dumphriestown, Va.  After the war he stated he moved
to Pendleton Dist. SC, the later to La. then to Jefferson/Blount Co. Al .then
to Gwinnett Co. Ga. by 1830.  He lived with Joseph and Mary Rutledge until
his death in March 1841 at the age of 110. (Pension records/newspaper
article)

While he may have been Mary's father/grandfather I have been unable
to prove his relationship/if any to Joseph or Mary Rutledge.  Any help or
leads  concernig Davis and Rutledge family relationships would be appreciated.
Tee Rutledge

All data I have is from John Cupit's book--but here goes:

John Rutledge, son of John Rutledge SR and his wife Jane ?)was born 17 0ct
1738, place unknown but probably VA.   He married Hannah (last name unknown)
23 Dec 1763.  Hannah was born 16 may 1746 and died 5 August 179?.   They
had, according to this book, 13 children.  After Hanna's death, he married
Elizabeth Downs 8 Nov 1798 and had two children, Nancy and Mary before his
death in 1802.

In the Cupit Book, he is referred to as the son of "Hanging Rock Creek"
John.

Apparently the two girls and the mother Elizabeth came to MS--they were
already in MS when Mary married the Cupit man.  Does  this help locate them
at all?   Kate

I am interested in the John Rutledge who married as his second wife
Elizabeth Downs.

I checked my database, but didn't find this particular John.  Do you know
approximately when he was born?  Or where? That could help pin point which John (I have about 40 of those John
Rutledge critters). Rosalyn Alsobrook

P. 39. Under him (Drury Lacy) the fund-raising strategy of appealing to the general assembly for escheats was tried again (1794), only this time after a little more homework. A committee of the board scoured the records of Prince Edward and neighboring counties looking for as yet unassigned escheatables of Loyalists; of such it found none, but they did discover that on the Appomattox River, a few miles west of the place that would become (1798) Farmville, there was a tract of land of almost 1300 acres escheatable since 1766- thirty two years before - because its last owner, a Mr. Routledge, had left no heirs when he was killed during an arugment over Britain's imperial policy.

My Rutledge family through our mother are direct descendants of native-born Virginians John Finley who married Thankful Doak. Catherine Rutledge in October 10, 1789 married Stephen Riddle/Ruddle.
Donavon and I found Hampden Sydney to be a beautiful campus. Interestingly, it took us awhile before we realized that the students were all male! We got some real good help from the library re genealogy of the early folks. At noon we ate in a pub-like eatery across from the main entrance where a sign on the wall read: "Hampden Sydney, where the men are treated like men and the women are treated like guests." Hmmmmmmm. This college figured greatly in the lives of Scotish Presbyterians of early Virigina. It began as a place to train ministers for the pulpit. A large section of land on which the college was situated once belonged to Robert Rutledge.... Bradshaw History p. 96 states that 1,272 acres in Prince Edward (near Farmville) were once owned by Robert Rutledge, a scottish merchant for whom a bridge and ford on appomattox was named. He was murdered at Mosby's tavern in 1766 by Col John Chriswell.

I think a lot of it was when my Mother was living her and my Aunt made a trip east for family information, also he cousin Clifford Wilson who lives in McDonough Co., Ill. is a devout Morman so a lot probably came from the LDS church, and lastly my Grandmother had a very sharp mind and was a big letter writer and very inquizitive, she died at the young age of 99 years 10 months. I was born and raised in McDonough County and also spent time in Fulton County it is all very rich farm land. Also I notice the Rutledge's belived in large familys. So I can understand how they populated the United States far and wide. So to all who are sick or going for an operation remember Rutledges' live a long and proporus life. Regards; Jack

Hi listmembers,
In the course of researching my Goff and Tarkington families, I was
directed to the web page of James Goff. This page is my line but it is also
full of Rutledges! These Rutledges seem to be from Virginia (early) and
then primarly Tenn. There are so many listed that I don't want to copy them
all.

I will just give you the wewb address and let you browse on your own.

When you get to this page, click on the first listing - Thomas John Sr. Goff
Hope you find someone interesting!!

The following is part of an early 90s post to prodigy by Rachel.

"Now there is a George Rutledge, (I believe the one that was in Augusta Co, VA & 'removed' to Carolina ca. 1745) who died ca. 1770 (will dated 21 Mar 1770 in Tyron Co., NC., wife Jean - - leaves to son James tract of land called the Nickson Ieve containing 150 a; son John the place on Douchman's Creek containing 200 below Andrew Hampton's; son George place on Turkey Creek Cont 255 ac; son Charles, the place I now live on reserving same to wife for her life. dau Mary, mare and 20 pounds in money; dau Jean 25 lbs also tract of land on Broad River I got from James Ceisot.

Now George Rutledge purchased land from John Armstrong of Anson Co., in 1755--"VA money - - land on N side of Broad River, on main fork of Turkey Creek, 225 a, granted to sd Armstrong Aug 1753." Armstrong is reported to be relative of Geo. Now look at your William Rutledge b. ca. 1730-45. He is in Stokes Co." signed "Rachel"

NOTE: Rachel has a tie-in to this "William Rutledge" in a subsequant post if any one is interested in seeing it. ** Question - Does anyone have anything on the "Mary" who. as daughter of George Rutledge, received the mare and 20 pounds in his will? This is the proper time in the proper location and Mary assumedly of a young age, for her to have been the Mary Rutledge who married Thomas P. Sanford ca. 1780. JerrySanford

I just received a copy of the Rev. War Pension File for William Rutledge (file no. S4171). I thought this was the William Rutledge who was the son of James b 1671, married Mary Creson, and whose children included Joel (my line). But the information in the file does not agree with information previosly posted. Read on -- but the question is Can anyone help sort out this William Rutledge?
Lineage as posted by R.D. Clemons (and the topic of several posts since September)
James Rutledge b 1671+ (First ) Mary (?)
1. John Rutledge b. ber 1722 (Stepson)
2. Richard Rutledge b. bef 1722 (Stepson)

4. James Rutledge b 1745
5. Joseph Rutledge b 1744
6. Thomas Rutledge b 1735+ (Second) Sarah Rutledge (Widow of Thomas Rutledge) From the Lincoln C. Tn. Pioneers Vol VIII we are told that William was a Lt. in the Rev War and that he was French. {note this slightly disagrees with the post above which has William born in this country.}
From the Index of Rev War Pension Applications by Hoyt , National Geenealogical Soc. we find there are four Rutledge Pensions listed as follows:
Edward Va. S6032
Joshua Md (no file)
Peter Md R9115
William NC S4171
From the William Rutldege Pension file S 4171 we Find that this William was a Private not a Lt. William was born in "1755 in the state of Penn. just outside the town of Carlise" { this does not agree with the posted information above or the Pioneers information}
Therefore I must conclude this in not the same William Rutledge or The posts are wrong. I prefer the former. Can anyone identify this William Rutledge. A copy of the pension file is yours if you can!
Thanks in Advance

Wiley Blount Rutledge, Jr. was born 20 Jul 1894 in Cloverport KY and
died 10 Sep 1949 in York Co. ME. He is buried in Green Mountain Cemetery
in Boulder Co. CO.

He was an attorney, teacher, dean, and US Supreme Court justice. He was
appointed to the court by FDR.

He married on 28 Aug 1917 in Buncombe Co. NC to Annabel Person. She
taught Greek at Maryville College, where I think they met. I think they
had 3 children.

Wiley Blount Rutledge Sr. was born 21 Oct 1861 in Bledsoe Co. TN, and
died 6 Jul 1944.

He was a circuit-riding minister. He m/1 Mary Lou Wigginton ca. 1893 in
Bullitt Co. KY. They had at least 3 children, Wiley Jr. being the
eldest.

After Mary Lou's death, Wiley Sr. remarried Tamsey Cordelia Cate, and
they had at least 3 children.

Wiley Sr. was one of the youngest children of Thomas Rutledge (ca. 1803
VA - 1870) and Thomas' third wife Jane Hall, who was previously married
to a Pope. I'm not sure, but I think Wiley Sr. was likely the youngest.

Best wishes,

Darryl

Hello Holly-

It is still eerie, your Littleberry, Nancy, Parthenia Hardin Rutledge.
Look at the children of our family, #1,2,6,8 especially: Nancy F.,
Littleberry B., Harriette Adeline and Parthena Harden.

Too close to be just coincidence! We now have pictures of Joseph and
Melissa Rutledge, and of couple more of these children. Wanna compare?

Here is the latest on the family group record of our Joseph and Melissa Ann
McCay/McCoy Rutledge. We have been successful at tracking down more of the
children, very little else on Joseph and Melissa.

Am hopeful of making some connections, someday. Your line is most
intriguing. What happened to Parthenia's brother, Joseph?

Richard

Hello Rutledges- Have been away for quite awhile, ............

I was looking at the Va marriages that were posted by Ancestry-Com and
found several Rutledges from Lunenburg Va. area, and at this time I am
almost certain that my husband's Rutledge line connects with the Lunenburg
area.

I found several Lunenburg marriages I was hoping someone might
know more about. As it stands with my line I have the following:

Parthenia Hardin Rutledge b. 4/1828 m. Samuel Gibson Snead b. 1827.
Both were born in Virginia. Parthenia's parents were Littleberry
Rutledge and Nancy ???, and I believe Nancy's name was Farmer. There is a
Littleberry Rutledge, born ca. 1785, and Nancy Farmer, born ca.
1790-1795, married in Lunenburg Co., Va. on 12/30/1812, and with
everything I have been able to find out about that family these should
be her parents.

The Ancestry Com marriages show the following Rutledges that may or may not
connect with Littleberry and Nancy.

Blanks Rutledge m. Polly Clay 10/17/1809 There is another Clay in
my husband's line. (Possibly he is a brother of Littleberry?)
Prudence Rutledge m. Chapman Blackwell 1/25/1809 (Perhaps a sister?)
James Rutledge m. Frances W. Stone 6/18/1845 There are many Stones
in my husband's line as well. This James may possibly be a son or
grandson of Littleberry and Nancy.
Peter Rutledge m. Mary Borum 12/26/1828
Sally Rutledge m. Richard Crafton 10/14/1844
William Rutledge m. Elay Bowen 9/3/1811 (Again possibly a brother?)
William Rutledge m. Sarah Sheffield 9/18/1850

The Clay and Stone lines that are in my husband's line connect with his
Snead line, and as shown above, Parthenia Rutledge married Samuel Gibson
Snead, so I am sure I've all but connected with the family.

Siblings of Parthenia include
James H. b.ca. 1814, (possibly the James that married Francis Stone?),
Joseph b. after 1815,
Emily b. 3/13/1825, m. to ? Crumpton,
Nancy b. ca. 1827, m. to Mitchell Sullivan,
Martha Mary b. 1828, m. to ? Morgan,
Elizabeth b. 1832, m. to ? Heady,
Sarah A. b. 1834
and Harriet Adeline b. 1837.

Nancy Farmer died in Greenville, South Carolina, so Littleberry probably
had migrated to SC some time before 1837, and Emily and Parthenia probably
with their families both moved to Salem, South Carolina, where they are
buried.

Parthenia and Samuel were married ca. 1851 in Salem S.C. My Rutledge
line appears to have left Va area in late 1840's.

If anyone knows anything about the Lunenburg Rutledge line, or if any of
these names ring a bell, I would love to connect with you. I would love to
find a connection with any of these Rutledges, especially Blanks and James
as I am trying to find more about the Snead/Clay marriage and children in
that family.

An unknown Snead b. ca. 1770 (male) married an unknown Clay b. ca. 1775 and
a daughter Nancy Ann Snead was born 2/26/1793. I would love to find her

Hi Jean,

I am forwarding your letter to the Rutledge Family mailing list because I
know of at least a couple of researchers on the list who can answer part, if
not all, of your questions. Peter Rutledge is a name I've seen quite
frequently on the list, and I'm hoping those descendants will answer you
personally.

Are you acquainted with Rachel Clemons, author of 2 volumes of "My Rutledge
Family?" She has a Peter Rutledge in her line, and the books detail much of
his life and the lives of his descendants. Rachel is a valued and
knowledgeable member of the Rutledge list.

Dear Kathye,
My husband's great-grandparents were Allen Louis Lindsey (born May 29,
1853 in Washington Co., VA to Isaac Lindsey) and Phoebe Rutledge. They
were married (Feb. 24, 1875) in Washington Co., Virginia. They moved to
Texas Co., Missouri and then toVernon Co. after their marriage. They had
at least two of the children in Texas Co. I don't have information on
the birthplace of the others. Phoebe had a brother, William Rutledge,
also born (April 7, 1857) and married (March 16, 1882) in Washington
Co., VA to Armenia C. Rosenbalm and settled in Washington Co., here in
Nebraska. The above information was provided by my mother-in-law about
her family.

When I was searching Ancestral Files at the Family History Center, I
located William Rutledge and his spouse, her name given as Catherine A.
Van Huss, but other data was the same; so she may have been going by
another name (her middle name and mother's maiden name?) here for some
reason. I also have a copy of his obituary from the newspaper at the
time of his death. I obtained death certificates for both Phoebe
Rutledge Lindsey and William Rutledge. Phoebe's gave her birthdate as
August 1, 1854 and birthplace Washington Co., VA, name of parents were
unknown. The informant was her son Isaac.

William's death certificate gave his spouse's name as Catherine
Rutledge, his birthdate April 7, 1857 in Washington Co., Virginia. His
father is given as Peter Rutledge (birthplace Penn), and mother Pheoba
Rutledge (birthplace Penn) The informant was his wife, Catherine.

I located Phoebe and William as young children on the 1860 Federal
Census as living in Washington Co., VA. They are listed with another
Phoebe Rutledge (age 70? Housekeeper), Elizabeth (age 28 Spinster),
Phebe (age 7), William (age 5) , and Sarah (age 1) . The 1850 Federal
Census shows Peter (age 45?), Phebe (age 38), Mathias (age 16), Robert
(Age 14). The information on census records is sometimes hard to read,
isn't it?

Various family histories I have located, ones submitted to Family Tree
Maker, Kindred Konnections, and other websites show Peter and Phebe
Rutledge's children being Anthony, Mathias and Elizabeth. No mention is
made of Phebe and William (or little Sarah).

The age of Peter and Phebe (Sr.) make it unlikely that Phebe (Jr.) and
William were their natural children. Do you know anything about this?
First of all I thought that maybe Elizabeth was their mother, but I
haven't seen anything to substantiate this. One website family history
says she married Mathias Rosenbaum about 1861 and died about 1862. He
married again to Elizabeth McVey. There is no mention of her having
children.

I'm really stumped and don't know where else I can check at this point.
Perhaps I have two completely different families that I'm intermingling.
So many of the same names are used over and over. I'm just hoping
someone with some knowledge of the Rutledge family can get me started in
the right direction.

I don't expect you to spend a great deal of time on the question, but
was hoping you might have a clue to this family.

Thanks so much for your time.

Sarah Armstrong's (m. Edward Rutledge) was Thomas Armstrong of Augusta Co. VA, mother unknown.

All I know is that Thomas Armstrong b. ca. 1710 was in this country by ca. 1725, I have no idea
where the boat he was created on sailed from. He had at least two children,
both born in Augusta Co. VA, Sarah b. ca. 1732, m Edward Rutledge ca. 1750
d. ca. 1723 and William who I have no dates for. All his children were born
to his first marriage, wife/mother unknown. His second marriage was to
(Mary?) Ann Lafferty Stewart of KY. Thomas' will is dated 1776.

Hello Rutledges- Have been away for quite awhile, my mother's line
finally opened and there was enough information to collect on her side
that I have been working on her side of my tree for most of this year.
Its great to finally find the one link that connects you with one entire
side of your tree. Wish I could be so lucky with my Rutledges. I was
looking at the Va marriages that were posted by Ancestry-Com and found
several Rutledges from Lunenburg Va. area, and at this time I am almost
certain that my husband's Rutledge line connects with the Lunenburg

There is
a Littleberry Rutledge, born ca. 1785, and Nancy Farmer, born ca.
1790-1795, married in Lunenburg Co., Va. on 12/30/1812, and with
everything I have been able to find out about that family these should
be her parents.

The Ancestry Com marriages show the following Rutledges that may or may
not connect with Littleberry and Nancy.

Blanks Rutledge m. Polly Clay 10/17/1809 There is another Clay in
my husband's line. (Possibly he is a brother of Littleberry?)
Prudence Rutledge m. Chapman Blackwell 1/25/1809 (Perhaps a sister?)
James Rutledge m. Frances W. Stone 6/18/1845 There are many Stones
in my husband's line as well. This James may possibly be a son
or grandson of Littleberry and Nancy.
Peter Rutledge m. Mary Borum 12/26/1828
Sally Rutledge m. Richard Crafton 10/14/1844
William Rutledge m. Elay Bowen 9/3/1811 (Again possibly a brother?)
William Rutledge m. Sarah Sheffield 9/18/1850

The Clay and Stone lines that are in my husband's line connect with his
Snead line, and as shown above, Parthenia Rutledge married Samuel Gibson
Snead, so I am sure I've all but connected with the family.

Siblings of Parthenia include James H. b. ca. 1814, (possibly the James
that married Francis Stone), Joseph b. after 1815, Emily b. 3/13/1825,
m. to ? Crumpton, Nancy b. ca. 1827, m. to Mitchell Sullivan, Martha
Mary b. 1828, m. to ? Morgan, Elizabeth b. 1832, m. to ? Heady, Sarah
A. b. 1834 and Harriet Adeline b. 1837. Nancy Farmer died in
Greenville, South Carolina, so Littleberry probably had migrated to SC
some time before 1837, and Emily and Parthenia probably with their
families both moved to Salem, South Carolina, where they are buried.
Parthenia and Samuel were married ca. 1851 in Salem S.C. My Rutledge
line appears to have left Va area in late 1840's.

If anyone knows anything about the Lunenburg Rutledge line, or if any of
these names ring a bell, I would love to connect with you. I would love
to find a connection with any of these Rutledges, especially Blanks and
James as I am trying to find more about the Snead/Clay marriage and
children in that family. An unknown Snead b. ca. 1770 (male) married an
unknown Clay b. ca. 1775 and a daughter Nancy Ann Snead was born
2/26/1793. I would love to find her siblings to try to connect some
Sneads that are floating around with these Rutledges. They've been
floating around for so long, would love to find something to pull them
all in before they drown. Appreciate anything anyone can offer. Holly
M. Snead

This is my Rutlege line and I hope I have it typed in right. Some of it is
from my own research (Generation 5 & forward) - those going backwards is
from the Rutledge web site (by Danny Knight - sure wish I could find him -
Danny and I corresponded many years ago, and I lost him.) If anyone has
corrections to this, please send them to me.

The posting on GenForum was from ME, and Betty is the first person who ever
responded to it....Thought I might find a Singleton who knew something about
the elusive JMR...no luck yet.

Emanuel Rutledge and his wife actually lived with a Singleton in the census
of 1870?? (or was it 1860). I'll have to check my notes. That was in
Virginia...

Richard,

Do you have any record of a Bryant Sanders in Virginia in the late 1700s?
He settled in Lafayette County, MO in early 1800s, coming by way of
Tennessee and Kentucky. I'd be grateful for any help. Thanks.

Holly, who were the other siblings of Littleberry and Joseph Rutledge? I should have that info somewhere but can't find it just now. CBR

It appears that Nancy Farmer's father was James Farmer, born in Lunenburg Co., Va about 1770 married to Elizabeth Harding. They were married April 15, 1794, in Lunenburg. If this proves correct this is probably the connection with the Hardin name. Either the g was dropped from the children's names or there is an error in the naming of Elizabeth (perhaps she also is a Hardin?) Info I have suggests otherwise. The Bible of Mrs. Nellie Rutledge Davis of Crawfordsville IN says:

George Rutledge, b. in Scotland was a Presbyterian, a dissenter from the Episcopal Church. He went from Scotland to Ireland and there married Nelly Gamble. Their oldest son, William was born in Ireland in 1728. William m. Elinor Caldwell. They emigrated from Ireland to Augusta Co. (now Wythe Co.) VA ...

I don't recall whether it states where George was born, but there is a section on the family in "Notable Southern Families", vol. 5, pp. 26-31, Crockett family.

Carol Bishop,

It's not so confusing if you stop to think about it. Nor is it surprising that the names in the will are familiar to you. The son, Thomas SPILMAN, b.1763 VA, named his children after his siblings. The will was written by Thomas SPILMAN, born ca.1725/30, of King George Co., VA. where the will was probated in 1782.
According to my records, This Thomas SPILMAN, b.1725/30 who had widow, Elizabeth, was the father of your Thomas SPILMAN, b. 1763 who settled in Culpepper Co. and married April 1786 to Mary MASSEY, dau. of Robert and Elizabeth MASSEY.
Your Thomas SPILMAN, born 1763 would have been about 19 years old at the time that his father died. He was named in his father's will.
He married to Mary MASSEY four years later in Culpepper Co. This is consistent with the writings of John Jasper Spilman. The will was transcribed by Malcolm Melville about 30 years ago or more. I obtained most of Melville's research and his personal copy of his book the SPILMAN PAPERS from his widow about 20 years ago.

I can send you a descendency chart or GEDCOM on what I have on the SPILMANS if you would like. It differs a little from some of the conclusions drawn by other SPILMAN researchers. But like other genealogists, I've had to derive some of my conclusions from circumstantial evidence and logical reasoning when hard evidence is not available. I'm about 90% confident that what I have is correct based upon about 40 plus years of confusing research trying to sort out all of the various Thomas SPILMANs, James SPILMANs, John SPILMANs, Lettice SPILMANs, etc. By the way, what is your line from Thomas SPILMAN and Mary MASSEY? I'm descended from your Thomas SPILMAN's older brother, William SPILMAN, b.ca.1750/55 who married Oct 1775 in King George Co., VA to Mary BROWN dau. of Thomas BROWN and had a son, Thomas SPILMAN born 22 Mar 1777 Culpepper Co., VA who married 17 Nov 1798 in Mercer Co., KY to Nancy BRENTON. They settled in Gallatin Co. (now Trimble Co.), KY.

Carol Bishop wrote:

Talk about confusing. Where did that will come from? My ggggrandfather was Thomas Spilman born about 1763 in Culpepper Co. Virginia.
He was married to Mary Massey about 1785 and moved to Kentucky about 1790.
Now the thing that is so confusing to me is all the children listed in the will are the names of this THomas Spilman who is my ggggrandfather. How can that be? Was his wife named Elizabeth Mary? or what?
I have listed in my book by John Jasper Spilman the following children for Thomas Spilman and Mary Massey...: Robert, Samuel, James, John, Thomas, William, Levi, Peggy (probably Margaret), Polly , Nancy, Lettie, Sallie(probably Sarah), and Rebecca Spilman.
According to John Jasper Spilman, my ggggrandfather Thomas Spilman was son of a Thomas Spilman who supposedly a soldier under Gen. Washington and was pressent at the surrender of Lord Cornwallis at Yorktown
So now I am thoroughly confused. Can you help straighten this out? Carol

I'm going through my binders, trying to put all my ducks in a row with each surname. I have finally come to the the Rutledges. I am still bothered by the connection of Michael Rutledge and Elinor Deason as the parents of Wm. C.

First of all, Dale Rutledge, has that John is the father of William.

Second of all, even if the birthdate of Elinor Deason is assumed, her marriage date puts her born in 1749, IF she married at 16. Then she would have to be 45 when she had William. More likely she was about 19, and therefore would have been 47. Another wrench in this is that William would have been born a full 20 years after her last kid, Michael.

Besides all that, in the slew of Wm. C. Rutledge descendants there is not a one named Michael or Elinor.

Anyway, I'm thinking that John is the father of Wm. C. because that's what Dale has and what my grandma had. She was his great granddaughter.

I did find in "Early Ohio Settlers" that a Wm. bought land in May 20, 1831 along with a George Rutledge. This could be my Wm. since he was settled there by then. But I don't know who the George is. An Archer Rutledge bough land connected to theirs. If anyone knows about this. Please let me know. There are also listed James, John D., John E., Peter, Robert, Thomas, and another Wm. who bought land in 1811 if anyone wants to know about them. Diana

Hi all,

Haven't posted lately--nor have I seen anything from my "cousin" Freida... Still looking for my James Rutledge b. ca 1740 in VA, married Ann Owen and died in Wilkes Co, GA 1822-24. He's still a mystery. I've heard he's son of another James Rutledge--and Sarah--b. ca 1671, but have no proof... Any ideas???

Also, has anybody tried to link the various Rutledges in VA in the 1700's? Maybe if everybody posts who they know of then and there, we can figure out some links??? Help help!

thanks all, Cyndi in Baltimore P.S. Dad is back at his computer--back surgery was successful!

Hi Edna and those of you who are researching MARY POLLY MASSEY RATLEDGE:

Mary's dad STEPHEN MASSEY was born on the Isle of Nantucket in the year 1761. He and his family were Quakers. When Stephen was ten years old his family moved to Gilford County, North Carolina. He married when he was 20 years old. His father was also named Stephen and his mother was MERCY ALLEN.

At the time people didn't like the Quakers very much so they moved on into Greene County, Tennessee.

From the yearly tax book of Greene County (1804 through 1866) the Masseys and the RUTLEDGES lived in the tax district Number 5.

From the 1840 list: Henry Massey; Stephen Massey; Thomas Rutledge; Benjamin Rutledge; Asberry Rutledge.

From the 1841 list: Benjamin Rutledge; Stephen Massey; Thomas Rutledge - (district 8)

From the 1842 list: William Massey; Henry Massey; Stephen Massey; Benjamin Rutledge

From the 1843 list: William Massey; Henry Massey; John Massey; Stephen Massey; Benjamin Rutledge; Asberry Rutledge

From the 1844 list: Benjamin Rutledge

From the 1845 and the 1846 lists: No Rutledges No Masseys

From the 1847 list: William Massey; John Massey; Stephen Massey (had 120 acres) No Rutledges

These are on the LDS film #94445. Notice the spelling RUTLEDGE, not RATLEDGE. At the bottom I have written "Solomon Massey, son of Stephen is buried in the Armstrong Cemetery near Madisonville, Tennessee.

It seems that Stephen Massey moved to Madison County, Tennessee, the same year the Ratledge's moved to Tillico Plains, Tennessee. The Ratledge's stayed but the Massey's seem to have gone back to Greene County, Tennessee.

If we can find the name of Mary Polly Massey Ratledge's mother, I have the Massey's info back to the late 1600's. My records are from "The History of Nantucket" Volume II by Alexander Starbuck, and also from "Massey Families in America" by Judge Frank A. Massey, Judge of the Circuit Court, Fort Worth, Texas 76102, and many more reliable sources.

Edna, I also have the court records of your ancestor (Catherine Ratledge Moses) receiving land from Mary and Benjamin Ratledge, and will be happy to send that to you if you email me your snail mail address.

I am sending this to the list in hopes that there might be someone else out there who is also researching these names.

Thank you for your time.
John [email protected]

Dear Cousin,

James Rutledge and Ann Owen were both from VA, but both died in GA. They had a son named Dudley Rutledge (b. ca.. 1778 that married Rachel Glass in GA on Dec. 29, 1801 and died July 1836). Dudley and Rachel had the following children:

John Rutledge m. Sarah Wilson
Joshua G. Rutledge m. Mary Iler
James Rutledge
Mary Ann Rutledge m. G. E. Sloan
Sarah Rutledge m. Mr. Carroway
Dudley W. Rutledge m. Ellen Moreau
Eliza Jane Rutledge m. John Perkins, Ed Stapleton
Francis Rachel Rutledge m. Ed Stapleton
William Owen Rutledge m. Edna L. Robertson, Jane Horton, Elizabeth
Partridge, Melina Foster

I have more information on some of the brothers and sisters, but very little on John that married Sarah Wilson.
I will send it to you if you want it.

Frieda- I tried ti e-mail you directly but it would not let me. It said unknown user.
I was going through the Rutledge archives and came across a message you wrote. It said that Dudley Rutledge had a son named Dudley. I was wondering
if this Dudley, Sr., born ca 1778 in Virginia. If so, my husband is descended through his son, John Oliver Rutledge. I didn't have a Dudley, Jr., I was just wondering. Thank you, Carrie Franks [email protected]

Don, Had gone to library tonight and found a lot of other information on Missouri lines, Spilman, Hewlett, Boucher, and 1 John Rutledge, who I believe may be John Rutledge, Jr, s/o John Rutledge and Jane Gaw Brown Rutledge.
If they left Jackson County, TN about 1840-1843, then by the Civil War, if John Jr had been born 1845 or so, in 1865 he would have been 19-20 years old! more on this later.

I have 2 references for my Gaw-Hewlett-Spilman lines. The first being John Jasper Spilman's, The History of the Spilman Family written in 1909; the second is a later copy I copied from another Spilman cousin in Fort Worth, I had met last summer. She was born in Virginia in 1765 and died in Allen County, Kentucky, in 1835. Mary produced a family of thirteen children most of whom survived the rigors of the the frontier to marry and have large families of their own.

On May 21, 1788 Thomas witnessed a deed in Culpepper County when his brother James deeded land to William Spilman, another brother. (Culpepper DB "O", p 476). Two years later three Spilman boys, Frank, James and Young Tom, settled in Kentucky; James and Frank went to Campbell County and Young Tom to Warren County where he took up 200 acres of land on the headwaters of Difficult Creek. On September 10 1798 certificate #1933 was issued to Thomas Spilman by the State of Kentucky, the text of which is given here in full:

On August 28, 1799, a grant deed conveying the above property was made to THOMAS SPILMAN. (Warren County, KY. DB 10-S.G.R., p 190) It was signed by Charles Scott, Governor of Kentucky and J. Bledsoe, Secretary of State.
Some years later Thomas and his family moved to Allen County, Kentucky, where he died in 1822 of pneumonia when the "cold plague" swept the country. His wife survived him by thirteen years and died in the same county in 1835. Issue: 13 children.

Don't know if this helped but it was a good typing exercise without stopping!!

I guess I was thinking of Rachel Clemons's e-mails about Massey-Rutledge-Sutton and not Spilman?
will wait and see for further developments!

WOW!!! Received interesting email yesterday from Marie Rutledge of Lithonia, GA who identified "my" Joseph Rutledge picture on Don Kelly's site as "her" Joseph. Seems as if that same picture was hanging in a home in Troup Co., GA, built by "her" Joseph in 1851-3. This same picture of Joseph has been copied and handed down in our family since the 1850s. Two of our branches had copies. Anyone have more detail on this RUTLEDGE line: 1) - James and Sarah of VA had at least 3 sons b. 1740s: 2) William 2) Joseph bc 1743 VA, md. Mary Paschal, 11 children 3) Thos, Nancy, Docus, Joseph Jr., Robert, James, Blanks, J. Paschal, Spencer, Berry, Polly. 2) James bc 1745 maybe in SC, md. ?, several children, he died 1823 Wilkes Co., GA. 3) James b. 1774 SC, m 1807 Susannah Sherrer of Wilkes Co., GA. m/2 1849 Emaline Granberry. Jas. died 1853 Harris Co. GA. 4) Joseph b. 1811 Wilkes Co., GA md. Jane Booker/Brooker, raised family in Troup Co., GA. Jos. died there in 1892. Joseph picture also possessed by other descendants: former Dr. Felix Rutledge (b. Chambers Co AL) of Houston TX, and the Roziers of Atlanta. Boy are we confused! Our Joseph and Marie's Joseph born same time and same place, but with different spouses and families, a few counties away???? Suggestions appreciated. And Thanks to Don for the website. For a long time now, I have tried to find if Edward Rutledge was an indenture servant. I can find no place where he owned land. He was transported by John Boering in 1670, The following land transactions names some servants but Edward was not listed as a servant. The John Boring/Boering listed along with his wife, Mary, was s/o John Boring, Sr.

Can anyone add any new info on the Boering family? Rachel Demaree Clemons [email protected] John Boering 5 March 1705: John Boring and wife Mary conv. Hello! Here are some notes from Charlotte County Court House VA which I
previously shared with the list but in case new members missed it.....
These are Bits & Pieces picked up on site. I hope there is some information
here that might help someone. Rutledges, Walkers, Palmers, Allens,
McCalister, Williams', Foxes' and Matthews' were names associated with
Fountain's family, so those are the names I picked out of records. I also
included Millers because of Ann of Abe fame. We narrowed our search to a
certain time period as we were limited on time, ourselves. These notes,
therefore are certainly not inclusive. And, as Rachel always says, please
check it for yourselves.

Holly - Nice to hear from you. Isn't this exciting?

LOOK CLOSELY, you will see your family DOWN the line, accurate almost to
the years and children order. Watch out for the repeats!

I still think we are onto a mutually successful trail!!!
James b. 1671 and Mary &/or Sarah is the line. Look at Rachel's post from
7/12. (I am confused re: Mary or Sarah).

From this second generation James and Ann Owen Rutledge were sons:
I believe a William, a James, a Joseph, and the others.

From their issue comes these REPEATING given names you and I have been
tracking, especially from James and Joseph. Not sure we have a record on
all those other children.

I am still sorting this all out...looking for more clues between the
lines...comparing posts from other descendants. But it looks good!

A Marie Rutledge saw the pic of "my" mysterious Joseph on the brickwall
website and emailed back that it was the same as a picture in a home in GA,
attributed to her ancestor. WOW!!!

Her Joseph was descended of the James and Ann of Lunenburg, VA!!!
He was born GA in 1811, mine estimated from a census report as 1810, in SC
or GA. Each descended from a "James," Marie's from two...I only know the
family legend says "descended from a James."

Think we are getting close?

Richard, et al,

So glad I didn't unsub from Rutledges while away. Have just gotten back
and found all data on Va. Rutledges and all the connections everyone is
finding, and am trying to post it all to my data. I am still sure that
my line connects in some way with Richard's (too many matching names not
to be linked. The posting of Rachel, however, showing Littleberry, son
of Joseph and Mary Paschal Rutledge, the birth date would not match up
with my Littleberry. I have Littleberry Rutledge, married to Nancy
Farmer, m. 12/30/1812 in Lunenburg, Va. as the parents of my Parthenia
Hardin Rutledge, and if this is the same Littleberry as a son of Joseph
and Mary Paschal, then he would have been born about 1790. I also had
three additional children of this family (a Filbert, a Leah and a John
Anderson Rutledge,) These three were included in an e-mail message I
received from a Jeanette Taken, I received back in April on Rutledge
line. She only showed the three children (William, James and Joseph) as
sons of James and Sarah. If I remember she was showing them as children
of Mary not Sarah. If these three can be validated or if added in
error let me know. This was definitely a large family.

Will definitely be watching mail for any additions on this hunt, as I
know there are links here. For one, the wife of Blanks (Polly Clay) may
possibly connect on my Snead line as a Martha Patsy Clay from Amelia
Co., b. ca. 1765, in my line married a Samuel Snead, Jr. on Jan 4, 1786
in Amelia Co., Va. This Samuel is a brother of my Archibald Lucas Snead
who was grandfather of the husband of my Parthenia Rutledge. Keep all
this coming. My printer is not working at this time so entering all
this data will definitely take some time, but is surely worth it. Holly
