He married Matilda King ABT 1790 in Virginia, daughter of Peter King.

John Rutledge and Elizabeth Grimke had issue:  [Total: 10]

William Rutledge, b. 17__, died __1822; married Sep. 12 1797, Ann Grimke
Coslett (St. Phillips Register, No. 2).  She was his cousin, being the
daughter of Hon. Charles Matthews Coslett, an assistant Judge for SC,
and Ann Grimke, youngest daughter of John Paul Grimke, jeweller.  (SC
Gazette, Dec. 24, 1772).  The original marriage settlement was dated
Sep. 11, 1797, Mrs. Ann Coslett, widow, and Edward Rutledge, Trustees. 

William Rutledge and Ann Coslett had one child, Nancy, baptized Aug. 3,
1798 (St Phillips Register No. 2) who died young. 

A deed dated 22Feb1802, recites the marriage settlement of William
Rutledge and Ann Grimke, his wife; Hon. John F. Grimke and Mrs. Ann
Coslett, trustees;
states purchase by William and Ann Rutledge from Hon. Hugh Rutledge,
executor of Mrs. Sarah Rutledge, of a plantation in Christ Church Parish
[SC].

William Rutledge made his Will 12Mar1822, proved 29May1822.  Leaves his
brother Frederick Rutledge, Esq., all of his estate.  Requests to be
buried in St. Michael's Church yard [Charleston, SC] by the side of his
wife, Ann Coslett Rutledge.

I found several Rutledge listings in "Kegley's Virginia Frontier" 
subtitled "The Beginning of the Southwest, The Roanoke of Colonial Days
1740-1783" by F. B. Kegley, originally published in 1938, reprinted
Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 2003. I had it on inter-library
loan through my local library from the St. Louis County Library so will
be unable to do any lookups. I borrowed it to look up info on other
lines, not Rutledges, so have no further info on any of these but the
Rutledges listed are: Edward, George, James, John and Thomas. There are
also pictures of the Thomas Rutledge House, North Fork Roanoke & the
Rutledge Spring House. Hope this helps someone.

As long as I'm writing: my Rutledge ancestor is John R. Rutledge who
was in Louisiana in the early 1800s. His father may have been Hugh. He
may have been from South Carolina. His daughter, Sarah Ann, married
William Lemon 6 Jun 1806, East Feliciana Parish, Louisiana. They moved
to Livingston County, Kentucky where William died in 1832.

married Ann Gillespie.  These Rutledge families centered around
Montgomery Co., VA, Augusta Co., VA and then to Washington Co, MO on
the way to California.

Rutledge in Virginia: George 1690-1752 may be the right generation to have
delt with William Kerr so we may have a documented lineage there.

Around 1775 or so a British officer in a barfight stabbed a Rutledge to
death with his sword.

Unfortunately I don't have a citation of the full name of the victim or the
town in which it happened, or the date, but it had to have happened before
the British were defeated in Virginia.....else the British officer would not
have been in that bar after 1776.

If related at all, the victim could have been a son or nephew of George
Rutledge.

Have you seen any information about that murder?

 The fact that George Rutledge (1690-1752) emigrated from Tyrone to Augusta
 County, VA, got me thinking again about that house in Virginia I inquired
 about
 last week. It is called "Black Oak Spring" and still stands about a half
 mile
 west of New Hope in Augusta Co., VA.

 I have a copy of an 1980 brochure written about this place. It states that
 in
 1763, George III gave a grant of land consisting of 26 acres to a certain
 William Kerr. It goes on to say:

 "Kerr sold a sizable amount of acreage to Edward Rutledge, who had
 emigrated
 from northern Ireland where he had been born about 1725. It was thought he
 came to America between 1735-1740. Married to Sarah Armstrong, he had
 fathered
 six children. In 1784 he and his wife had given 142 acres to his eldest
 son,
 James. This land, on Middle River, included the 'Black Oak Spring'
 property."

 This Edward Rutledge the brochure (written by one Gladys B. Clem) speaks
 of
 was the grandson of the George Rutledge mentioned above (birth dates
 approximate):

 George Rutledge (1690-1752) father of
 Thomas Rutledge (1710-1791) father of
 Edward Rutledge (1730-1787)

 The James to whom Edward have given land (much more than he had bought
 from
 Kerr) is James Enos Rutledge (1768-1848), who is in my direct line. The
 year
 before his death, Edward gave the rest of his property to James' brother
 George
 (1770-1824).

 An interesting footnote is that a son of James Enos and a daughter of
 George,
 first cousins, married each other. Keeping thing within the family, so to
 speak.

father was possibly James Rutledge b. 1711 Lunenburg
VA son of Thomas? b. bef 1715 d. 1741.  From there I
have a brickwall.  Is there any more info that might
be useful to you?  I have a GEDCOM of all my info that

Lucreasey, Richard, John, David, William, & Sarah Rutledge:
1793 Indenture purchase of 100 acres land in Charlotte Co. from Richard
Blanton.  (Deed Bk. 6, Charlotte Co. Clerk's         office)

LUCRETIA RUTLEDGE:
In 1796 witnessed will of Michael Gill (recorded in Ch. Co., W.B. 2, pg.
195).  ? at least 21 y/o.
1840 Ch. Co. census shows Lucretia as head of household. Two females: One
between 50 & 60 y/o and one between 60     & 70 y/o (? Lucretia).

WILLIAM RUTLEDGE:
Marriage to Polly Hamblin Aug. 13, 1804 witnessed by John.  Loose track of
William after 1809.

JOHN RUTLEDGE:
John married Sally Loggins in 1794 in Charlotte County, VA.
John went to Tennessee in early 1800's.  Possibly the same John that
murdered William Loggins, Jr. in Tennessee.  Pleaded "Benifit of Clergy"

RICHARD RUTLEDGE:
Born in Prince Edward Co., VA
Married Jenny Milam January 04, 1799.
Married Mary (Polly) Newcomb January 20, 1808
In 1857 sold his land to his (?) nephew John Hundley Rutledge while
maintaining lifetime rights. (Book 30, Pg. 233 in Charlotte Co.     Clerks's
office).
The 1850 census shows his age as 80 y/o. He has one other family member in
the household. Sarah is 27 y/o. Possibly his daughter.  ? To young to be a
wife.  They live next to David Rutledge.
1860 census - 92 y/o.

Born in Prince Edward Co., VA
Married Synthey Hundley November 09, 1815.
Enlisted in the War of 1812

I am trying so hard to put this family with my Rutledge family in
Jefferson County.  By your memo, I am to assume there is no connection
and that the SC Rutledges were by-passed by your VA Rutledges?  Family
trees are never neat!
(I do Mullins and in Lawrence CO in 1820-there are 3 different Mullins
families plus a Mullenix family--none related on this side of the pond!
Who would have thought that so many different people with one name could

     The Laggan and its Presbyterianism and In the Days of the Laggan
Presbytery, 1905, 1908, by the Rev. Alexander Lecky, B.A., member of the Royal
Society of Antiquaries of Ireland, Belfast, Davidson and McCormack, 54 Kings St.  
 211 pages
            On our recent trip to Donegal we met J.B. Shannon, age 90,
who assisted in the 1975 reprinting of this book.    He is the last living
person who had anything to do with these books and he says they are still the
BEST source for Ulster Presbyterian research.    From Lecky the
following:    "The lists of names of former generations of Lagganeers, and their places
of abode, that are given in the Appendixes, and which NEVER before appeared in
print, whilst they may of necessity prove dull reading to those who have no
acquaintance with the locality, will not, I hope, be altogether uninteresting
to those who bear the same name, or live in the same places....

     A History of the Siege of Londonderry and Defense of Enniskellen in 1688
and 1689, with Historical Poetry and Biographical notes, by the Rev. John
Graham, M.A. Rector of Magilligan in the Diocese of Derry.    Includes the
Battles of the Boyne, Athlone, and Aughrim and the siege and Capitulation of
Limmerick by Lord McCaulay, Toronto, 1869
            The historical poems are family genealogies about those
who were at Derry and where they came from.    Along with "Fighters of Derry"
these two sources contain more actual genealogical information than any others
I have seen.

     Fighters of Derry, Their Deeds and Descendants, being a Chronicle of
Events in Ireland during the Revolutionary period, 1688-1691, by William Young,
Eyre and Spottiswoode, London, 350 pages.
            One of the most difficult sources to locate. (WorldCat
Inter-Library lists seven known copies)    Months worth of reading and packed
with great genealogy.    Contains the following biographical sketches:
            1.    The leaders of the County Associations who, with
their levies, took part in the preliminary operations and contributed much of
the man power for the Defence.
   2.    The Apprentice Boys and those responsible for shutting the
gates on the 8th Dec. 1688.
   3.    The actual Defenders during the 105 day siege ((over 12000
genealogical sketches)
   4.    Those engaged in the relief of the city.

     Three Hundred Years in Innishowen, Being More Particularly an Account of
the Family of Young of Culdaff with Short Accounts of Many Other Families
Connected with Them, by Amy Young, The Linenhall Press, Belfast, 1929, 311 pages
            Some of the names included are Young, Hart, Harvey, Cary,
Vaughan, McLaughlin, Skipton, Richardson, Knox, Ussher, Smith, Nesbitt,
Chichester, Ball, Lawrence, Crofton, Boyd, Stuart and many others.

The Laggan and its People, by S.M. Campbell, privately printed.   
            Ms. Campbell lived on the next farm over from my friend
James Fleming in St. Johnston, Donegal.    A look at the history of the Laggan
(Presbyterian Derry/Donegal) through the eyes of a local historian.   
Draws on local lore, Abercorn papers, records from PRONI.

     Well there you have it.    The best documents I have found during my
ten years of research.    If you are interested in obtaining any of the above

In his survey notes he says John Collins settled in the Manor near Indian
Village
(Northside of Moorefield)  that he (George Washington) and George Fairfax
spent
the night with Collins.  This note also appears in Washingtons survey notes
"James Rutledge" was settled about 70 miles above South Branch where he
(George Washington) spent the night.

Episcopal Church. Cromwell's War he and his family removed to Ireland. He married
Nelly
Gamble a descendant of Josphp Gamble, who emigrated from Londonderry Ireland
to Winchester Virginia.
The eldest son of George Rutledge and Nelly Gamble was William born in
Tyrnone County Ireland 1728, and married  Elinor Caldwell born in Caven County
Ireland
they were in august Co. Virginia by 1751. They moved family of 3 girls and 2

to Sullivan Co. Tennessee in 1777.
their youngest son Robert Rutledge married Catherine  Crockett daughter of
Samuel Crockett Jr.
Roberts brother George was in the Revolutionary War and fought in the battle
of King's mt. He married Annie Armstrong.
Their ggg grandson Robet Thomas Case age 16 son of Frank H. Case and wife Fay
Thomas has compiled a sketch of Gen. George Rutledge and some movements of
the family from Scotland to America, some going to the Carolinas and others to
Virginia. Robert Case resides in Bristol Tenn.

Catherine Crockett bron Nov 18 1771 August Co. Virginia married Robert
Rutledge March 24 1795. He was son of William Rutledge and Eleanor Caldwell both of
Ireland.
Robert Rutledge born Oct 13 1764 in Augusta Co. Virginia died Sept 16 1835
Catherine died 1839 both buried Old Weaver Cem. on the Weaver Pike near
Bristol Tennessee.

It sounds like the connection does go back to the elusive Jackson Middleton
Rutledge.  And actually you know about as much as we do. I haven't been able to
find a trace of the rascal and neither has anyone else I know of.  I've been
wondering if his name got scrambled in that SC Rutledge Kith and Kin book where
he is listed. His wife is guessed to be the Sarah Rutledge listed as living
next to Thomas Rutledge in one of the Hawkins' CO. TN census (1830 or 1840) I
can't remember.  Thomas Rutledge (according to census) was born in VA in 1803.
So we could be dealing with Jackson Middleton Rutledge being an older brother
and  David Weldon Rutledge a younger though that does kill the theory that
Edward (the signer) Rutledge was Jackson's father.

Don't we have a descendent of John Rutledge (Edward's brother) on this list?
Anyone know if he has done the DNA bit. It would solve the mystery of if we are
descended from those brothers.

I'm fascinated that we're connected. I just can't figure out where. It goes
past both our brick walls. Maybe with prayer and luck - we'll hit a chink in
our walls somewhere.

 Hi Cousin Julie,
    I know we are related somewhere down the Rutledge line, because DNA
 doesn't lie.  This is why we went to the DNA testing route, is because
 we were at a stand-still and we believe it is the only way we are going
 to break down the brick wall we are against. So happy to hear from you,
 we are so excited to know that we have a lead to find new cousins.
   We are going to have to go back farther than Stephen W. Rutledge, to
 join our Rutledge family together.  Stephen was born around 1833 and our
 David was born around 1790 in N.C.(can only go by date in 1850
 Rutherford Co., Tn. census).  David married Angeline Williamson on the 4
 th. of July 1816 in Rutherford Co., Tn.  This is the first record we can
 find with his name on it.  He died in Gibson Co., Tn. the 29 May 1844.
 They had 15 children and raised 13 of them. They are: Coleman, Monroe
 (our GGrandfather),  Angeline, Martha, Susan, James, Nancy, David,
 Beverly, Benjamin, Robert, Samuel, Ary and 2 unnnamed babies. 
    Since our David and Jackson Middleton Rutledge were born within two
 years of each other, it could be they were either brothers or cousins.
 I don't have the information of where Jackson Middleton was born or
 died. All I have on him is the year he was born (1777) and was
 married to Sarah Lucy Singleton. And had  three children, Lorenco Dow,
 Emanuel and Thomas.
    Our Grandfather John Joel Rutledge (Grandson of David) told his
 children what his parents had told him, "In the beginning there were 7
 Rutledge brothers who came from the border of England and Ireland and
 landed in N.Y. and they scattered out into the Eastern States".  Grandpa
 also told his kids, when the Rutledges lived in Tn.,   "Anytime or
 anywhere you met another person named Rutledge, they were kinfolks".
 Another thing that was handed down from generation to generation in our
 Rutledge family, is we are related to the signers of,  "The Decoration
 of Independence", and "The Constitution", and also related to Ann
 Rutledge, who was the sweetheart of Abe Lincoln.  We have believed all
 of this to be true, because we don't believe our Grandfathers would be
 telling their Children and Grandchildren this otherwise. Back in the
 older days, story telling was the only way parents and grandparents
 could pass on their family history.  Each one of them would tell their
 Children and Grandchildren about their life and their Grandparents life
 as far back and they knew.  Most of the people back before the 1900's
 never had the chance to get an education, so most of them couldn't read
 or write down their family history, they could only pass it down to
 their chidren by telling them as much as they could remember about their
 life. 
    If you have any more info on Jackson Middleton Rutledge, I would like
 to know. And too,  I don't have much on some of John B. Rutleldge's
 children.  I don't have anything on Eliza, Olive, Oritha, Rosa or Nancy.
 I notice they have some of the same names as our Rutledge's do.

Does anyone know if these Rutledges are connected to the family of Edward
Rutledge of Augusta county and his wife Sarah Armstrong of Flagg Springs?
Also, does anyone have any information on the parents of Edward, alleged to
be Thomas Rutledge and Jean Armstrong? Grandparents???

 Richard, Lucretia, John, David, William and Sarah purchased 100 acres of land by indenture in 1792 in Charlotte Co., VA.  They purchased it from Richard Blanton.  Richard R. was born approx. 1770 in Prince Edward Co. and David (My direct line) was born apporx. 1780 in Pr. Ed. Co.  Richard married Jenny Milam and Mary Newcomb.  David married Synthey Hundley.  William married Polly Hamblin.  I believe Wm. possibly moved to Franklin Co., VA with Hamblins.  John married Sally Loggins.  I believe he is the John who went to Tennessee in the early 1800's.  He is possibly the same John who killed a Wm. Loggins in Tennessee.

 I believe, but don't have proof that their parents were John and Clary Rutledge.  Property taxes at Ch. C. H.  show "Jno. Rutledge estate" for sev. yrs. in the 1790's.  When it doesn't have him, it shows Clary (or Clara) Rutledge having property.  I also find the above boys listed.  These and Thomas Rutledge are the only Rutledges I find in Ch. Co. during that time.

 I have looked in Charlotte, Prince Edward, and Lunenburg Co's but find no record of a marriage between a John and Clary Rutledge.  I know they are connected based on an indenture with both their names.  Does anyone have any ideas or words of wisdom that may help?

 By the way, would someone be willing to post the James and Sarah info. again.  Wasn't she married before to a Thomas who had died and possibly had children by him?

      Just received this email from a newly discovered Rutledge-Baugher
cousin
from Elizabeth Rutledge line.  Elizabeth J. Rutledge was the daugher of
Lorenzo Dow Rutledge b.1813 VA and Polly/Mary Molsby of TN.  She says that
part of the TN Rutledge line ended up in SE MO and then to Blytheville, AR as
Baughers (pronounced Boyer in our line), as well as So. IL that I knew of in
Hardin County, IL. 
         Has anyone found any more info or proof on Jackson Middleton
Rutledge

Dear Barbara,
       I found your query tonight in browsing the web. I have not researched
the Rutledge line for several years, but I am also a descendent of Lorenzo
Dow and Mary. I am a descendent of Elizabeth Rutledge and John Jacob Baugher.
I do have some information gleamed from census and marriage records and also
a copy of a bible record of  Lorenzo and Mary that were in my great uncle
(Eddie Baugher) possession. I am really interested in the information that
Lorenzo was the son of Jackson Middleton Rutledge. Do you have some type of
document or is this hear say information?
       My grandfather, Thomas Valentine Baugher and his family came to the
bootheel of Missouri and then on to Blytheville, Mississippi County,
Arkansas. Elizabeth's
brother William Epsome Rutledge died 26 March 1942 in Pemiscot County,
Missouri. William and wife Mary M. were found in the 1910 Pemiscot Co. Mo.
Census. William was 53-TN, Mary M. 50-IL. Census stated that Mary had 10
children with 7 living. Only one daughter, Cend age 9-IL was listed in the
household.
In 1920 Pemiscot Co. MO Little Prairie PCT was age 60-IL, widow and had some
grandchildren listed in her household.
       I will be happy to share what little information I have with you.
Again I am
really interested in the parents of Lorenzo Dow. I did find the marriage
date for Lorenzo and Mary. They were married 29 Jan 1835 Hawkins County,
Tennessee. The records are located in the Early East Tennessee Marriage
Records.

Hi Tina,  I hope I can tell you this straight...My husband Jack's
grandparents were Robert and Mae Rutledge Kiger,she being the daughter
of Stephen and Mary Massey Rutledge.  Robert and Mae's daughter Helen
Maxine married Jack's father Harlan Pollitt.  On the other side,Harlan's
sister Jessie married Grover Mullins who was son of Caleb and Bell
Watson Mullins.  There were 8 children of Caleb and Bell.  Bell was the
daughter and 2nd child of Zachariah and Nancy Ann Rutledge
Watson,daughter of Abraham Rutledge. 
According to my info which I received just last week from Jack's cousin
who obtained it from the Rutledge reunion in Danville,Il. Abraham
Rutledge,1786-1840 was born in South Carolina and after spending on year
in N.C. moved to KY in 1798.  He remained in Kentucky,a prosperous
farmer until 1834,he moved his family together with his brother John
Rutldege and sisters, Ruth and Mary Rutledge and came to Vermilion Co.
Il  He married twice,his first wife bing Mary Huffman,and his second
wife Barabara Deck.  He had  11 Children survive him He is burried in
1840  in the cemetary on Hazel St. Danville,Il.
So you see, we are related to Rutledges on both sides.

I have a Dudley Adkinson Rutledge b. 1772-1775 in Virginia and married Rachel Glass.  Then there's a Dudley Adkins
Rutledge b. November 4, 1813 in Richmond County, GA  He was the nephew of the first one.  He was son of William Owen
Rutledge.  He was married about four times and I'm sure had children, but I don't know them yet.   I can only guess
that the name carried on down either with Dudley #2 or a brother.

My very dear and true Kitty,

 You see from the head of my letter that I am still in the hospital, but thanks to my God I am on the mend.  My hearing is still getting better.  Still too weak to do much walking.  My dear Kitty, I am cheered almost every day by good tidings from our war department, but it seems that never again am I to be cheered up by that sweetest of news from home until it pleases God and my country to return me to that sweetest of places on this earth, Home.  Now I look forward with buoyant hope for that bright day that shall soon speak peace to our glorious Confederacy and return its happy sons in safety to the bosom of their dear families.  Should the good God of Heaven continue to smile on our cause as he has done I doubt not but that day is not far distant.  Dear Kitty, help us to pray that it may speedily arrive.
 We have doubtless gained the greatest victory near Richmond lately that we ever have gained.  I cannot enter into particulars.  The amount of property estimated two days ago as captured from the enemy was $5,000,000 besides about 3,500 prisoners.  The fight still goes on.  Our army having the Yankees so surrounded that it is very difficult for them to make an effectual escape.  Have captured a no. of their Generals and officers of different rank.  The supposition is that their entire army here is broke up.  Our people here are all in high spirits.  It is still cold here.  I can wear my warmest clothes today.
 You don't know how hard a time I have in this hospital.  You know I have been used to an active life and to be cramped up in one place as I am you know it must be confining, but thanks to God that it is no worse.  I reckon I am favored above what I deserve by the Almighty.  My dear Kitty, I hope that you will never forget to pray for one that thinks so much of you and the dear little ones around you.
 I wrote you in my last letter of the death of our beloved nephew Robert Chafin, but for fear the letter never reached you I will insert it here again.  He died on the 23rd day of June.  The Doctor says of typhoid pneumonia, but I think he died more of salivation than any thing else.  Tell Mrs. Routon that I can never hear from our company so that I can give her no news from John.  Give my best wishes to Bettison and family and tell them that I can't make a raise of paper enough to do but very little writing.  I would be glad to write to them, Wm, L, & Brother Nugent but can't at present.  This is my last scrap of paper.  If you get a chance send my very best love to our dear Mother.  Tell her that I have written to her but have dispaired of hearing from any of you until times are changed.  I write this letter calculating that it is paper lost for I don't expect you will get it, but I will try by every possible means to give some news of me as I know your heart yearns to hea!

James Rutledge was married to Ann Owen.  I know that Lucile Fleming Artly Davis' SAR papers state that James' wife was Ann Hicks but this is incorrect. I have a transcribed copy of the will of Thomas Owen, leaving part of his estate to his daughter Ann Rutledge.  I also have copies of other documents relating to a court case in VA involving the heirs of Thomas Owen.  These documents are too lengthy to publish here but I will be glad to send a copy to anyone who wishes to have them.  After studying them carefully, I believe you will reach the same conclusion that I have - that James Rutledge was married to Ann Owen.

Cousins,
I found this information in Zella Armstrong's "Notable Southern Families"
Vol. V, originally printed at Chattanooga TN in 1928.  She was a professional
genealogists who with several assistants researched several southern families
with prominent members.  In researching the roots and descendants of David
Crockett (the famous Davy) she recorded the following:
CATHERINE CROCKETT (dau. of Samuel Jr.)
Born Nov. 18, 1771, Augusta Co. (now Wythe), Va.; m. Robert RUTLEDGE , Mar.
24, 1795.  He a son of William Rutledge* and Eleanor Caldwell, both of
Ireland.

*George Rutledge, born in Scotland, was a Presbyterian and a dissenter of the
Episcopal church (Church of England, the official church).  On account of
Cromwell's War (the English Civil War and aftermath, 1642 to 1660) he and his
family removed to Ireland.  He married Nelly Gamble, a descendant  of Joseph
Gamble, who emigrated from Londonderry, Ireland, to Winchester, Va. 
The eldest of George Rutledge and Nellie Gamble was William, b. in Tyrone
Co., Ireland in 1728, and married Elinor Caldwell (b. in Cavan Co., Ireland)
in Augusta Co., Va. 1751.  They moved with their family of three girls and
two boys to Sullivan Co., Tenn. in 1777.
Their youngest son Robert married Catherine Crockett of this sketch; Robert's
brother, George was in the Revolutionary War and fought in the battle of
King's Mtn.  He married Annis Armstrong.  (This family of Rutledge moved from
Scotland to America, some going to Virginia, some to the Carolinas.)

Robert RUTLEDGE served as an ensign in the battle of King's Mountain under
Gen. Shelby.

Virginia Rutledge searchers, Searching another line of mine, I ran across a website
that just might show a connection to Mary Paschal, wife of Joseph Rutledge. 

There are a few surnames that match up to other branches in my tree and the closeness of the areas
seems to indicate a possible link-up, at least something to further investigate. 

Will post what I found and the researcher's data, and anyone interested should be
able to get in
touch with her if your line connects with this family.  The connection
with New Jersey and
Pennsylvania also seems to connect with our Virginia Rutledges.  Perhaps

Thomas Paschall was a First Purchaser of 500 acres in Group 15 and he
had a warrant as early
as 7/18/1682 which date fits nicely with the belief he came on the
Society,
Thomas cleared 6 acres five miles from Phila. and built himself a house
with a chimney  He was
married to Joana Sloper before 1655 in England.  Joana died 7/2/1707 in
Philadelphia.

Elizabethtown, NJ.  Records indicate William Paschall moved to NC about
1740.  Under Lord Granville,
William and his sons were granted large tracts of land in what was then
Granville Co., some of this land
was in the Drewry-Ridgeway area.

I am looking for info on Nancy Rutledge, dau. of Joseph rutledge, who m.
William Davis, 5 Jan. 1788 in Pr. Edward Co. Va.  Joseph Rutledge in 1785 Pr.
Edward Co. census shows,10 white souls, 1 dwelling,and 2 other buildings.  In
1787 Pr. Edw. census, Joseph Rutledge showed himself, 3 slaves +16, 4 slaves 
-16, 4 horses and 17 cattle.  In Sept. 1773 Joseph Rutledge transferred land
to Runford DeJarnette in Pr. Edward Co. Va. 

I hace done extensive research in So. Side Va. counties, Amelia, Pr. Edward,
Luenburg, etc. but have been unable to connect my antecedents, Joseph and
Mary Rutledge, b. 1770, and 1775, SC to any of these Rutledges.

On Dec.7,1818--A Land grant was made to (my) Joseph Rutledge,
Abbeville,District,S.C. 120 acres on a branch of Saluda river,certified on
Oct.20,1818.  Adjoined land of William Davis,Thomas Donaldson, ,
Thos.Norwood, Benj.Maddox.  S.C.Plat Book,Vol.45, P.362.

Is this the Wm. Davis that m. Nancy Rutledge dau. of Joseph Rutledge of Pr.
Edward Co. Va?  I do not know the maiden name of Joseph's wife Mary.  However
in 1830 John Davis was living with Joseph and Mary Rurtledge in Gwinnett Co.
Ga. and applied for an received a pension as a R.S.  He was b. in 1730,
enlisted April 1777 at Dumphriestown, Va.  After the war he stated he moved
to Pendleton Dist. SC, the later to La. then to Jefferson/Blount Co. Al .then
to Gwinnett Co. Ga. by 1830.  He lived with Joseph and Mary Rutledge until
his death in March 1841 at the age of 110. (Pension records/newspaper
article) 

While he may have been Mary's father/grandfather I have been unable
to prove his relationship/if any to Joseph or Mary Rutledge.  Any help or
leads  concernig Davis and Rutledge family relationships would be appreciated.

  All data I have is from John Cupit's book--but here goes:

John Rutledge, son of John Rutledge SR and his wife Jane ?)was born 17 0ct
1738, place unknown but probably VA.   He married Hannah (last name unknown)
23 Dec 1763.  Hannah was born 16 may 1746 and died 5 August 179?.   They
had, according to this book, 13 children.  After Hanna's death, he married
Elizabeth Downs 8 Nov 1798 and had two children, Nancy and Mary before his
death in 1802.

In the Cupit Book, he is referred to as the son of "Hanging Rock Creek"
John.

Apparently the two girls and the mother Elizabeth came to MS--they were
already in MS when Mary married the Cupit man.  Does  this help locate them

P. 39. Under him (Drury Lacy) the fund-raising strategy of appealing to the general assembly for escheats was tried again (1794), only this time after a little more homework. A committee of the board scoured the records of Prince Edward and neighboring counties looking for as yet unassigned escheatables of Loyalists; of such it found none, but they did discover that on the Appomattox River, a few miles west of the place that would become (1798) Farmville, there was a tract of land of almost 1300 acres escheatable since 1766- thirty two years before - because its last owner, a Mr. Routledge, had left no heirs when he was killed during an arugment over Britain's imperial policy.

My Rutledge family through our mother are direct descendants of native-born Virginians John Finley who married Thankful Doak. Their daughter Margaret Finley married John Shields June 26, 1768 and among their 12 children was Margaret b. Aug. 5, 1775 who married Samuel Doak. We are descended from the third child James b. March 9 1772 who married Elizabeth Higginbotham March 2, 1797.
The legend in our family is that they were Quakers thus the frequent inter-marriages (and there were many.) I suspect the Mary Doak and the Finleys appearing in your records are part of my family's ancestry.

From Bradshaw's History of Hampden Sydney College William Rutledge had obtained a patent in 1745 for land in North Carolina.
In 1753 he transferred 237 acres of said land to Cornelius Riddle/Ruddle.

Catherine Rutledge in October 10, 1789 married Stephen Riddle/Ruddle.
Donavon and I found Hampden Sydney to be a beautiful campus. Interestingly, it took us awhile before we realized that the students were all male! We got some real good help from the library re genealogy of the early folks. At noon we ate in a pub-like eatery across from the main entrance where a sign on the wall read: "Hampden Sydney, where the men are treated like men and the women are treated like guests." Hmmmmmmm. This college figured greatly in the lives of Scotish Presbyterians of early Virigina. It began as a place to train ministers for the pulpit. A large section of land on which the college was situated once belonged to Robert Rutledge.... Bradshaw History p. 96 states that 1,272 acres in Prince Edward (near Farmville) were once owned by Robert Rutledge, a scottish merchant for whom a bridge and ford on appomattox was named. He was murdered at Mosby's tavern in 1766 by Col John Chriswell.

I asked her where she got them and she couldn't remember all of where she got them. I think a lot of it was when my Mother was living her and my Aunt made a trip east for family information, also he cousin Clifford Wilson who lives in McDonough Co., Ill. is a devout Morman so a lot probably came from the LDS church, and lastly my Grandmother had a very sharp mind and was a big letter writer and very inquizitive, she died at the young age of 99 years 10 months. I was born and raised in McDonough County and also spent time in Fulton County it is all very rich farm land. Also I notice the Rutledge's belived in large familys. Now George Rutledge purchased land from John Armstrong of Anson Co., in 1755--"VA money - - land on N side of Broad River, on main fork of Turkey Creek, 225 a, granted to sd Armstrong Aug 1753." Armstrong is reported to be relative of Geo. Now look at your William Rutledge b. ca. 1730-45. He is in Stokes Co." signed "Rachel"

I would like to know more about Elizabeth Brown. George Rutledge chr. Feb. 03, 1745 Augusta Co., VA + Elizabeth Brown chr. Nov. 05, 1747 I have: I found that both George and Elizabeth were christened at Tinkling Springs church in Augusta Co., VA. and that they married there about 1776. Her father was Thomas Brown.

6. Thomas Rutledge b 1735+ (Second) Sarah Rutledge (Widow of Thomas Rutledge) From the Lincoln C. Tn. Pioneers Vol VIII we are told that William was a Lt. in the Rev War and that he was French. {note this slightly disagrees with the post above which has William born in this country.}
From the Index of Rev War Pension Applications by Hoyt , National Geenealogical Soc. we find there are four Rutledge Pensions listed as follows:

From the William Rutldege Pension file S 4171 we Find that this William was a Private not a Lt. William was born in "1755 in the state of Penn. just outside the town of Carlise" { this does not agree with the posted information above or the Pioneers information}
Therefore I must conclude this in not the same William Rutledge or The posts are wrong. I prefer the former. Can anyone identify this William Rutledge. A copy of the pension file is yours if you can!

Wiley Blount Rutledge, Jr. was born 20 Jul 1894 in Cloverport KY and
died 10 Sep 1949 in York Co. ME. He is buried in Green Mountain Cemetery
in Boulder Co. CO.

He was an attorney, teacher, dean, and US Supreme Court justice. He was
appointed to the court by FDR.

He married on 28 Aug 1917 in Buncombe Co. NC to Annabel Person. She
taught Greek at Maryville College, where I think they met. I think they
had 3 children.

Wiley Blount Rutledge Sr. was born 21 Oct 1861 in Bledsoe Co. TN, and
died 6 Jul 1944.

He was a circuit-riding minister. He m/1 Mary Lou Wigginton ca. 1893 in
Bullitt Co. KY. They had at least 3 children, Wiley Jr. being the
eldest.

After Mary Lou's death, Wiley Sr. remarried Tamsey Cordelia Cate, and
they had at least 3 children.

Wiley Sr. was one of the youngest children of Thomas Rutledge (ca. 1803
VA - 1870) and Thomas' third wife Jane Hall, who was previously married
to a Pope. I'm not sure, but I think Wiley Sr. was likely the youngest.

Melissa Rutledge, and of couple more of these children. Wanna compare?

Here is the latest on the family group record of our Joseph and Melissa Ann

found several Rutledges from Lunenburg Va. area, and at this time I am
almost certain that my husband's Rutledge line connects with the Lunenburg
area.

I found several Lunenburg marriages I was hoping someone might
know more about. As it stands with my line I have the following:

Parthenia Hardin Rutledge b. 4/1828 m. Samuel Gibson Snead b. 1827.
Both were born in Virginia. Parthenia's parents were Littleberry
Rutledge and Nancy ???, and I believe Nancy's name was Farmer. There is a
Littleberry Rutledge, born ca. 1785, and Nancy Farmer, born ca.
1790-1795, married in Lunenburg Co., Va. on 12/30/1812, and with
everything I have been able to find out about that family these should
be her parents.

The Ancestry Com marriages show the following Rutledges that may or may not
connect with Littleberry and Nancy.

Blanks Rutledge m. Polly Clay 10/17/1809 There is another Clay in
my husband's line. (Possibly he is a brother of Littleberry?)
Prudence Rutledge m. Chapman Blackwell 1/25/1809 (Perhaps a sister?)
James Rutledge m. Frances W. Stone 6/18/1845 There are many Stones
in my husband's line as well. This James may possibly be a son or
grandson of Littleberry and Nancy.
Peter Rutledge m. Mary Borum 12/26/1828
Sally Rutledge m. Richard Crafton 10/14/1844
William Rutledge m. Elay Bowen 9/3/1811 (Again possibly a brother?)
William Rutledge m. Sarah Sheffield 9/18/1850

The Clay and Stone lines that are in my husband's line connect with his
Snead line, and as shown above, Parthenia Rutledge married Samuel Gibson
Snead, so I am sure I've all but connected with the family.

Siblings of Parthenia include
James H. b.ca. 1814, (possibly the James that married Francis Stone?),
Joseph b. after 1815,
Emily b. 3/13/1825, m. to ? Crumpton,
Nancy b. ca. 1827, m. to Mitchell Sullivan,
Martha Mary b. 1828, m. to ? Morgan,

Sarah A. b. 1834
and Harriet Adeline b. 1837.

Nancy Farmer died in Greenville, South Carolina, so Littleberry probably
had migrated to SC some time before 1837, and Emily and Parthenia probably
with their families both moved to Salem, South Carolina, where they are
buried.

Parthenia and Samuel were married ca. 1851 in Salem S.C. My Rutledge
line appears to have left Va area in late 1840's.

If anyone knows anything about the Lunenburg Rutledge line, or if any of
these names ring a bell, I would love to connect with you. I would love to
find a connection with any of these Rutledges, especially Blanks and James
as I am trying to find more about the Snead/Clay marriage and children in
that family.

An unknown Snead b. ca. 1770 (male) married an unknown Clay b. ca. 1775 and
a daughter Nancy Ann Snead was born 2/26/1793. I would love to find her
siblings to try to connect some Sneads that are floating around with these
Rutledges. They've been floating around for so long, would love to find
something to pull them all in before they drown. Appreciate anything
anyone can offer.

My husband's great-grandparents were Allen Louis Lindsey (born May 29,
1853 in Washington Co., VA to Isaac Lindsey) and Phoebe Rutledge. They
were married (Feb. 24, 1875) in Washington Co., Virginia. They moved to
Texas Co., Missouri and then toVernon Co. after their marriage. They had
at least two of the children in Texas Co. I don't have information on
the birthplace of the others. Phoebe had a brother, William Rutledge,
also born (April 7, 1857) and married (March 16, 1882) in Washington
Co., VA to Armenia C. Rosenbalm and settled in Washington Co., here in
Nebraska. The above information was provided by my mother-in-law about
her family.

When I was searching Ancestral Files at the Family History Center, I
located William Rutledge and his spouse, her name given as Catherine A.
Van Huss, but other data was the same; so she may have been going by
another name (her middle name and mother's maiden name?) here for some
reason. I also have a copy of his obituary from the newspaper at the
time of his death. I obtained death certificates for both Phoebe
Rutledge Lindsey and William Rutledge. Phoebe's gave her birthdate as
August 1, 1854 and birthplace Washington Co., VA, name of parents were
unknown. The informant was her son Isaac.

William's death certificate gave his spouse's name as Catherine
Rutledge, his birthdate April 7, 1857 in Washington Co., Virginia. His
father is given as Peter Rutledge (birthplace Penn), and mother Pheoba
Rutledge (birthplace Penn) The informant was his wife, Catherine.

I located Phoebe and William as young children on the 1860 Federal
Census as living in Washington Co., VA. They are listed with another
Phoebe Rutledge (age 70? Housekeeper), Elizabeth (age 28 Spinster),
Phebe (age 7), William (age 5) , and Sarah (age 1) . The 1850 Federal
Census shows Peter (age 45?), Phebe (age 38), Mathias (age 16), Robert
(Age 14). The information on census records is sometimes hard to read,
isn't it?

Various family histories I have located, ones submitted to Family Tree
Maker, Kindred Konnections, and other websites show Peter and Phebe
Rutledge's children being Anthony, Mathias and Elizabeth. No mention is
made of Phebe and William (or little Sarah).

The age of Peter and Phebe (Sr.) make it unlikely that Phebe (Jr.) and
William were their natural children. Do you know anything about this?
First of all I thought that maybe Elizabeth was their mother, but I
haven't seen anything to substantiate this. One website family history
says she married Mathias Rosenbaum about 1861 and died about 1862. He
married again to Elizabeth McVey. There is no mention of her having
children.

I'm really stumped and don't know where else I can check at this point.
Perhaps I have two completely different families that I'm intermingling.
So many of the same names are used over and over. I'm just hoping
someone with some knowledge of the Rutledge family can get me started in
the right direction.

I don't expect you to spend a great deal of time on the question, but
was hoping you might have a clue to this family.

Sarah Armstrong's (m. Edward Rutledge) was Thomas Armstrong of Augusta Co. VA, mother unknown.

All I know is that Thomas Armstrong b. ca. 1710 was in this country by ca. 1725, I have no idea
where the boat he was created on sailed from. He had at least two children,
both born in Augusta Co. VA, Sarah b. ca. 1732, m Edward Rutledge ca. 1750
d. ca. 1723 and William who I have no dates for. All his children were born
to his first marriage, wife/mother unknown. His second marriage was to
(Mary?) Ann Lafferty Stewart of KY. Thomas' will is dated 1776.

that I have been working on her side of my tree for most of this year.
Its great to finally find the one link that connects you with one entire
side of your tree. Wish I could be so lucky with my Rutledges. I was
looking at the Va marriages that were posted by Ancestry-Com and found
several Rutledges from Lunenburg Va. area, and at this time I am almost
certain that my husband's Rutledge line connects with the Lunenburg
area. I found several Lunenburg marriages I was hoping someone might
know more about. As it stands with my line I have the following:

Parthenia Hardin Rutledge b. 4/1828 m. Samuel Gibson Snead b. 1827.
Both were born in Virginia. Parthenia's parents were Littleberry
Rutledge and Nancy ???, and I believe Nancy's name was Farmer. There is
a Littleberry Rutledge, born ca. 1785, and Nancy Farmer, born ca.
1790-1795, married in Lunenburg Co., Va. on 12/30/1812, and with
everything I have been able to find out about that family these should
be her parents.

The Ancestry Com marriages show the following Rutledges that may or may
not connect with Littleberry and Nancy.

Blanks Rutledge m. Polly Clay 10/17/1809 There is another Clay in
my husband's line. (Possibly he is a brother of Littleberry?)
Prudence Rutledge m. Chapman Blackwell 1/25/1809 (Perhaps a sister?)
James Rutledge m. Frances W. Stone 6/18/1845 There are many Stones
in my husband's line as well. This James may possibly be a son
or grandson of Littleberry and Nancy.
Peter Rutledge m. Mary Borum 12/26/1828
Sally Rutledge m. Richard Crafton 10/14/1844
William Rutledge m. Elay Bowen 9/3/1811 (Again possibly a brother?)
William Rutledge m. Sarah Sheffield 9/18/1850

The Clay and Stone lines that are in my husband's line connect with his
Snead line, and as shown above, Parthenia Rutledge married Samuel Gibson
Snead, so I am sure I've all but connected with the family.

Siblings of Parthenia include James H. b. ca. 1814, (possibly the James
that married Francis Stone), Joseph b. after 1815, Emily b. 3/13/1825,
m. to ? Crumpton, Nancy b. ca. 1827, m. to Mitchell Sullivan, Martha
Mary b. 1828, m. to ? Morgan, Elizabeth b. 1832, m. to ? Heady, Sarah
A. b. 1834 and Harriet Adeline b. 1837. Nancy Farmer died in
Greenville, South Carolina, so Littleberry probably had migrated to SC
some time before 1837, and Emily and Parthenia probably with their
families both moved to Salem, South Carolina, where they are buried.
Parthenia and Samuel were married ca. 1851 in Salem S.C. My Rutledge
line appears to have left Va area in late 1840's.

If anyone knows anything about the Lunenburg Rutledge line, or if any of
these names ring a bell, I would love to connect with you. I would love
to find a connection with any of these Rutledges, especially Blanks and
James as I am trying to find more about the Snead/Clay marriage and
children in that family. An unknown Snead b. ca. 1770 (male) married an
unknown Clay b. ca. 1775 and a daughter Nancy Ann Snead was born
2/26/1793. I would love to find her siblings to try to connect some
Sneads that are floating around with these Rutledges. They've been
floating around for so long, would love to find something to pull them

I don't recall whether it states where George was born, but there is a section on the family in "Notable Southern Families", vol. 5, pp. 26-31, Crockett family.

Father was Charlie Rutledge mother Vinnie last name not known, Charlies parents were Mike Rutledge and Sally (?) 2nd wife, nothing more known at this time. Albert was raised by his uncle Connelly Rutledge died in Jonesville Va dates unkown,

It's not so confusing if you stop to think about it. Nor is it surprising that the names in the will are familiar to you. The son, Thomas SPILMAN, b.1763 VA, named his children after his siblings. The will was written by Thomas SPILMAN, born ca.1725/30, of King George Co., VA. where the will was probated in 1782.
According to my records, This Thomas SPILMAN, b.1725/30 who had widow, Elizabeth, was the father of your Thomas SPILMAN, b. 1763 who settled in Culpepper Co. and married April 1786 to Mary MASSEY, dau. of Robert and Elizabeth MASSEY.
Your Thomas SPILMAN, born 1763 would have been about 19 years old at the time that his father died. He was named in his father's will.
He married to Mary MASSEY four years later in Culpepper Co. This is consistent with the writings of John Jasper Spilman. The will was transcribed by Malcolm Melville about 30 years ago or more. I obtained most of Melville's research and his personal copy of his book the SPILMAN PAPERS from his widow about 20 years ago.

I can send you a descendency chart or GEDCOM on what I have on the SPILMANS if you would like. It differs a little from some of the conclusions drawn by other SPILMAN researchers. But like other genealogists, I've had to derive some of my conclusions from circumstantial evidence and logical reasoning when hard evidence is not available. I'm about 90% confident that what I have is correct based upon about 40 plus years of confusing research trying to sort out all of the various Thomas SPILMANs, James SPILMANs, John SPILMANs, Lettice SPILMANs, etc. By the way, what is your line from Thomas SPILMAN and Mary MASSEY? I'm descended from your Thomas SPILMAN's older brother, William SPILMAN, b.ca.1750/55 who married Oct 1775 in King George Co., VA to Mary BROWN dau. of Thomas BROWN and had a son, Thomas SPILMAN born 22 Mar 1777 Culpepper Co., VA who married 17 Nov 1798 in Mercer Co., KY to Nancy BRENTON. I'm going through my binders, trying to put all my ducks in a row with each surname. I have finally come to the the Rutledges. I am still bothered by the connection of Michael Rutledge and Elinor Deason as the parents of Wm. C.

First of all, Dale Rutledge, has that John is the father of William.

Second of all, even if the birthdate of Elinor Deason is assumed, her marriage date puts her born in 1749, IF she married at 16. Then she would have to be 45 when she had William. More likely she was about 19, and therefore would have been 47. Another wrench in this is that William would have been born a full 20 years after her last kid, Michael.

Besides all that, in the slew of Wm. C. Rutledge descendants there is not a one named Michael or Elinor.

Anyway, I'm thinking that John is the father of Wm. C. because that's what Dale has and what my grandma had. She was his great granddaughter.

I did find in "Early Ohio Settlers" that a Wm. bought land in May 20, 1831 along with a George Rutledge. This could be my Wm. since he was settled there by then. But I don't know who the George is. An Archer Rutledge bough land connected to theirs. If anyone knows about this. Please let me know. There are also listed James, John D., John E., Peter, Robert, Thomas, and another Wm. who bought land in 1811 if anyone wants to know about them. Diana

Haven't posted lately--nor have I seen anything from my "cousin" Freida... Still looking for my James Rutledge b. ca 1740 in VA, married Ann Owen and died in Wilkes Co, GA 1822-24. He's still a mystery. I've heard he's son of another James Rutledge--and Sarah--b. ca 1671, but have no proof... Any ideas???

Also, has anybody tried to link the various Rutledges in VA in the 1700's? Maybe if everybody posts who they know of then and there, we can figure out some links??? Help help!

Mary's dad STEPHEN MASSEY was born on the Isle of Nantucket in the year 1761. He and his family were Quakers. When Stephen was ten years old his family moved to Gilford County, North Carolina. He married when he was 20 years old. His father was also named Stephen and his mother was MERCY ALLEN.

At the time people didn't like the Quakers very much so they moved on into Greene County, Tennessee.

From the yearly tax book of Greene County (1804 through 1866) the Masseys and the RUTLEDGES lived in the tax district Number 5.

These are on the LDS film #94445. Notice the spelling RUTLEDGE, not RATLEDGE. At the bottom I have written "Solomon Massey, son of Stephen is buried in the Armstrong Cemetery near Madisonville, Tennessee.

It seems that Stephen Massey moved to Madison County, Tennessee, the same year the Ratledge's moved to Tillico Plains, Tennessee. The Ratledge's stayed but the Massey's seem to have gone back to Greene County, Tennessee.

If we can find the name of Mary Polly Massey Ratledge's mother, I have the Massey's info back to the late 1600's. My records are from "The History of Nantucket" Volume II by Alexander Starbuck, and also from "Massey Families in America" by Judge Frank A. Massey, Judge of the Circuit Court, Fort Worth, Texas 76102, and many more reliable sources.

Edna, I also have the court records of your ancestor (Catherine Ratledge Moses) receiving land from Mary and Benjamin Ratledge, and will be happy to send that to you if you email me your snail mail address.

Don, Had gone to library tonight and found a lot of other information on Missouri lines, Spilman, Hewlett, Boucher, and 1 John Rutledge, who I believe may be John Rutledge, Jr, s/o John Rutledge and Jane Gaw Brown Rutledge.
If they left Jackson County, TN about 1840-1843, then by the Civil War, if John Jr had been born 1845 or so, in 1865 he would have been 19-20 years old! more on this later.

I have 2 references for my Gaw-Hewlett-Spilman lines. The first being John Jasper Spilman's, The History of the Spilman Family written in 1909; the second is a later copy I copied from another Spilman cousin in Fort Worth, I had met last summer. On August 28, 1799, a grant deed conveying the above property was made to THOMAS SPILMAN. (Warren County, KY. DB 10-S.G.R., p 190) It was signed by Charles Scott, Governor of Kentucky and J. Bledsoe, Secretary of State.
Some years later Thomas and his family moved to Allen County, Kentucky, where he died in 1822 of pneumonia when the "cold plague" swept the country. His wife survived him by thirteen years and died in the same county in 1835. Issue: 13 children.

WOW!!! Received interesting email yesterday from Marie Rutledge of Lithonia, GA who identified "my" Joseph Rutledge picture on Don Kelly's site as "her" Joseph. Seems as if that same picture was hanging in a home in Troup Co., GA, built by "her" Joseph in 1851-3. This same picture of Joseph has been copied and handed down in our family since the 1850s. Two of our branches had copies. Anyone have more detail on this RUTLEDGE line: 1) - James and Sarah of VA had at least 3 sons b. 1740s: 2) William 2) Joseph bc 1743 VA, md. For a long time now, I have tried to find if Edward Rutledge was an indenture servant. I can find no place where he owned land. He was transported by John Boering in 1670, The following land transactions names some servants but Edward was not listed as a servant. The John Boring/Boering listed along with his wife, Mary, was s/o John Boring, Sr.

These are Bits & Pieces picked up on site. I hope there is some information
here that might help someone. Rutledges, Walkers, Palmers, Allens,
McCalister, Williams', Foxes' and Matthews' were names associated with
Fountain's family, so those are the names I picked out of records. I also
included Millers because of Ann of Abe fame. We narrowed our search to a
certain time period as we were limited on time, ourselves. These notes,

James b. 1671 and Mary &/or Sarah is the line. Look at Rachel's post from
7/12. (I am confused re: Mary or Sarah).

From this second generation James and Ann Owen Rutledge were sons:
I believe a William, a James, a Joseph, and the others.

From their issue comes these REPEATING given names you and I have been
tracking, especially from James and Joseph. Not sure we have a record on
all those other children.

I am still sorting this all out...looking for more clues between the
lines...comparing posts from other descendants. But it looks good!

A Marie Rutledge saw the pic of "my" mysterious Joseph on the brickwall
website and emailed back that it was the same as a picture in a home in GA,
attributed to her ancestor. WOW!!!

Her Joseph was descended of the James and Ann of Lunenburg, VA!!!
He was born GA in 1811, mine estimated from a census report as 1810, in SC
or GA. Each descended from a "James," Marie's from two...I only know the
family legend says "descended from a James."

line. She only showed the three children (William, James and Joseph) as
sons of James and Sarah. If I remember she was showing them as children
of Mary not Sarah. If these three can be validated or if added in
error let me know. This was definitely a large family.

Co., b. ca. 1765, in my line married a Samuel Snead, Jr. on Jan 4, 1786
in Amelia Co., Va. This Samuel is a brother of my Archibald Lucas Snead
who was grandfather of the husband of my Parthenia Rutledge. Keep all
this coming. My printer is not working at this time so entering all
