DeHart Family History - by Andrew Jackson DeHart

A Preliminary Study of the Origin and History of the DeHart Family

By: Andrew Jackson DeHart

Extracts from the Address of Sam G. DeHart of Stuart, Va.:

It always gives me pleasure to be able to attend this meeting of my people. I have been coming to Bryson City; now for about four years in a business way; am always glad to deal with any of the DeHarts. It seems to be a family trait to observe strict business integrity. I have customers in several states and am glad to say that I have never lost an account against one of them nor had an unpleasant settlement with one of them.

I am glad to say that the reputation of the DeHarts at Bryson City is the best of any here in a business way. Any salesman considers himself most lucky to secure the business of the members of the family . They have all made a record that we cannot be too proud of and it is commendable pracice to meet here and renew friendships and get better acquainted with as many of the kin as possible.

We have a tradition that our family came from one of four brothers that came from France to Charleston, S. C., and you have a tradition that seems to indicate that we and you came from the same family. I am sorry that we have failed to get and preserve the names of more of the generations but I think that at these meetings we are going to find out more than we now know.

I have formed valuable friendships since I have been coming to Bryson City, N. C. These friends are nearly all my relatives. Now let us cherish the name DeHart and make it better if possible so when we part this life and cros the chilly tide and land on the golden shore. May we yet cherish the name DeHart at the reunions of all reunions where parting comes no more.

I wish to say for more than twenty years I have been a salesman on the road and every where I find a DeHart I am proud of him. I have about fifty that I do business with.
