Counts Wallis of Austria-Hungary
Walsh(e) of Carrickmines, County Dublin

At the beginning of the 17th century, the Walshes were described as a large and ancient stock, and as men of note in the metropolitan county of Dublin, which was then "rich and plenteous in corn and cattle, and inhabited by a people of stately port and garb." The Castle of Carrickmines was surrounded by an orchard and garden, and, so far as was possible, its lands had been subjected to the plough.

But before the middle of that century the Walshes' prosperity was at an end, and they were reduced to the position of wanderers on the earth. The part taken by the owner of Carrickmines, in the Rebellion of 1641, is not clear, but as a family the Walshes threw themselves with ardour on the Irish side, and proved that they had become at least as Irish as the Irish themselves.

Whether with or without the consent of the owner, Carrickmines became the centre of disaffection in the southern part of the County Dublin, and the Walshes figure prominently in the depositions made by those who suffered losses during that dreadful winter. Richard Walsh, who had succeeded, in 1593, to Carrickmines, is stated in an inquisition to have died in 1620, but, according to the pedigree of a noble Austrian family, the Counts von Wallis, who claim descent from his second son, he did not die until some years later.

His eldest son, Theobald, was, however, living, in 1630, in Carrickmines Castle. A payment was then made to him, on the order of a foreigner, by the Earl of Cork, and, in a report on the diocese of Dublin it is mentioned that he was maintaining at that time in the castle a priest and a friar, "to celebrate Mass and execute their functions." But he cannot have been in it when its overthrow came, as he survived the Rebellion, and acted as a captain in the Confederates’ army.

During the whole winter after the Rebellion the County Dublin, south of the city, was in the hands of the rebels. Their defeat, in February, 1642, at Dean's Grange, gave them, no doubt, a check, and they fell back upon Carrickmines Castle, which they had prepared to stand a siege.


Count Wallis von Karighmain

The last Richard and the last Theobald of Carrickmines were in Germany long before their castle was blown up, and very likely were with Butler on the day that was fatal for Wallenstein (Feb. 25, 1634). Following the Cromwell defeat in Ireland, it was natural enough for Walsh of Carrickmines to go to Austria. In this sphere their ability and fighting qualities won for them places of distinction and profit. Their descendants carried on the tradition.

It is affirmed that Richard Walsh of Carrickmines, born 1583, and his two sons Theobald and Oliver were in the service of the Emperor Ferdinand II as early as 1622. Richard, who was a colonel in the Imperial Army, and Theobald returned to Ireland, presumably as they inherited at Carrickmines.

The Habsburg monarchy was the principal employer of the Irish in Central Europe. The earliest of note was Colonel Richard Walsh (Wallis) of Carrickmines, County Dublin, who came to Germany in 1612, and was mortally wounded at the battle of Lutzen in late 1632. His son, Oliver, also served the emperor. The Walshs had the longest military tradition of any of the Austro-Irish families; eleven were field marshalls or generals, the last of whom died only in 1895.

In Austria, Oliver (the name was frequent with the Graces and in all branches of the Walsh family) born in 1600, became Baron von Wallis in 1642, Chamberlain to Emperor Leopold I in 1665, Colonel Proprietor [Inhaber] of the Wallis Regiment of Infantry, Major General, and died 1667. Oliver, or Olivier Freiin Wallis v.Karighmain, was Richard's second son.

Count Franz Paul (or Franz Peter), born 1677, grandson of Baron Oliver, was Proprietor of the Wallis regiment and Field Marshall. In 1716 he was commander of the fortress at Temesvar. He died 1737.

Count George Oliver, 1676-1752, another grandson of Baron Oliver, was commander-in-chief against the Turks in July 1739, lost Belgrade, and suffered for it until Maria Theresa restored him to all his dignities. Quote: July 21, 1739 - Austrians (led by Wallis) and Turks battle at Belgrade (7,000 Austrians killed). Belgrade surrendered. Treaty signed, Turks gain Serbia.

Stefan Oliver (Gf Wallis), the second Count Wallis, son of Count Georg Olivier, was born 1774 and died 1832. He, or perhaps his father, would be the Count Wallis who was engaged in battles against Napoleon.

François Wenceslas, Count Wallis von Karighmain (1696-1774), another grandson of Baron Oliver, is cited among the Knights of the Golden Fleece, in the reign of Joseph II, emperor of the Romans, tenth head and sovereign of the house of Habsbourg-Lorraine (1741-1790).

Franz Olivier Graf Wallis v.Karighmain (1838-1895), a great-grandson of Stefan Olivier, was likely the Commander of The Hussar regiment of Austria, in 1880 as Oberst (or Inhaber), and in 1883 as Colonel.

These are some of the oustanding figures, but the family in Austria branched out rather extensively, and was seated in many places in Austria and Hungary.

a minor at the time of his father's death, and while his property was in the custody of Peter 
Barnewall, his guardian, the lands of Carrickmines were completely devastated by Irish 
marauders, who carried off "the prey of the town," notwithstanding the presence of a troop 
of horse, which was then stationed there.

SIR JAMES EUSTACE.  She was born Abt. 1580.

Richard of Carrickmayne, County Dublin - birth date from Burke's.  Richard died 1619, 
per Burke's Irish Family Records. 

Mr. Valentine Hussey Walsh contributed, from papers in his possession, records of the 
descents and marriages in the family of Carrickmines (Ref: Genealogist Vol. 17). From 
these it appears that in 1500 William Walsh of Carrickmayne married Margaret, daughter 
of Thomas Fitz William of Merrion; their son Richard married Eleanor Fitz Eustace; their 
son Theobald married Eleanor Fitz William, and their son Richard, Joan Eustace. This 
Richard died in 1632. His son Theobald, who married Maria Hore, was lord of the manor 
of Carrickmayne when it was taken in 1642, and Theobald's son Richard died without 
children. In this family between 1550 and 1640, there were two marriages with Fitz 
Williams, two with Talbots and four with Eustaces. The sons of William of 1500 were 
Richard, Howel, Robert, Edmund.

It is affirmed that Richard (or Robert?) Walsh of Carrickmines, born 1583, and his two 
sons Theobald and Oliver were in the service of the Emperor Ferdinand II as early as 
1622. Richard, who was a colonel in the Imperial Army, and Theobald returned to Ireland, 
presumably as they inherited at Carrickmines.

Werner Village was named for the Imperial Field Marshal von Wallis to the today's name 
of Wallisfurth, after the English landscape Wales, from where Richard Wallis 1622 
emigrated, in order to step into imperial services.

After the Restoration the property of the Walshes, at Carrickmines, was awarded by 
the Commissioners of Settlement to the Earl of Meath, and was subsequently assigned 
by him to Sir Joshua Allen, of Stillorgan, whose representative, the Earl of Carysfort, 
is now lord of the soil.

Possibly:
The country was occupied by the turks in over 140 years, even Budapest, the 
capitol was taken. Szeged was liberated by count Gyorgy Wallis in 1686 
consequently, after this followed Szabadka(Subotica), and the whole of 
Vojvodina was liberated as well. Though the county was liberated from 
the Turks, the towns in many ocasions were completely destroyed:

Possibly: 
In the summer of 1717, Prince Eugene (of Savoy) called the brigades in Vienna to 
assist in the Siege of Belgrade. The siege lasted two months with the both the 
Turks and the Imperial Army sometimes having the upper hand. Several of 
Oglethorpe's colleagues were killed, including at one, Mr.Villette, right at his 
side.  During the winter of 1717-1718 Oglethorpe visited several members of his 
family who had fled to Italy with the Pretender. His brother Theophilus had received 
a baronetcy from "King James III".  Whilst a peace conference with the Turks was 
under way, a new threat emerged: the Spanish invaded Sicily. Oglethorpe was 
assigned to the squadron of General Georg Wallis, and they mustered in Naples 
on May 7, 1718. However, for some reason Oglethorpe then returned to England.

Stephan Olivier Gf Wallis (d.1832) married 27 Nov 1765 to Marie Franziska

Stefan was possibly the Wallis at the The Battle of Wurzburg, 3rd September 1796, FML Sztaray: 
GM Montfraut: commander of the IR11 Wallis (1 batt) - the Wallis Regiment.

Miscellaneous Reference of Count [comte] Wallis von Karighmain

The whole of Vojvodina (Yugoslavia) was conquered by the Turks at the beginning of 1542. In 1543 the region was already a part of the newly organised Szeged- Sandzak (district). The country was occupied by the turks in over 140 yars, even Budapest, the capitol was taken. Szeged was liberated by count Gyorgy Wallis in 1686 consequently, after this followed Szabadka(Subotica), and the whole of Vojvodina was liberated as well. Though the county was liberated from the Turks, the towns in many ocasions were completely destroyed.

To 02.11.1716 prince Eugen travels back to Vienna, count Mercy takes over the supreme command over the Austrian armed forces in the Banat, (the) commander of fortress of Temesvar becomes Paul Wallis (Franz Paul von Wallis).

In the summer of 1717, Prince Eugene (of Savoy) called the brigades in Vienna to assist in the Siege of Belgrade. The siege lasted two months with the both the Turks and the Imperial Army sometimes having the upper hand. Several of Oglethorpe's colleagues were killed, including at one, Mr.Villette, right at his side. During the winter of 1717-1718 Oglethorpe visited several members of his family who had fled to Italy with the Pretender. His brother Theophilus had received a baronetcy from "King James III". Whilst a peace conference with the Turks was under way, a new threat emerged: the Spanish invaded Sicily. Oglethorpe was assigned to the squadron of General Georg Wallis, and they mustered in Naples on May 7, 1718. However, for some reason Oglethorpe then returned to England. In spite of a letter of recommendation from Prince Eugene to King George I, and probably because of the Jacobite connexions of many of his family, Oglethorpe could not obtain a commission in the British Army.

1739 July 21 Austrians (led by Wallis) and Turks battle at Belgrade (7,000 Austrians killed). Belgrade surrendered. Treaty signed, Turks gain Serbia.

There was a Graf Franz Wenzel Wallis, noted at the time of the Prussian Friedrich II, who was the Austrian military Governor Count Wallis who commanded at Glogau in Silesia (1740). A quote from the "History of Friedrich II of Prussia" by Thomas Carlyle goes, "Readers must admit that the Austrian military, Graf von Wallis to begin with,-- still more, General Browne, who is a younger man and has now the head charge,--behave well in their present forsaken condition. Wallis (Graf FRANZ WENZEL this one, not to be confounded with an older Wallis heard of in the late Turk War) is of Scotch?? descent,--as all these Wallises are; "came to Austria long generations ago; REICHSGRAFS since 1612:"--Browne is of Irish; age now thirty-five, ten years younger than Wallis. "

1741 - General Count von Wallis is presented through by Brandt of the queen nut/mother, afterwards by count Christoph von Dohna of the queen Elizabeth Christine.

The war with the Prussians continued and in 1756 the theater of war was again in Bohemia. There were battles at Lobozitz, Prague, Moys-Berge, Breslau, and Leuthen during the next two years. In 1758 the 35th was with the garrison troops at Vienna and fought at Hochkirch, in 1759 at Kunersdorf (as part of Corps Loudon), in 1760 at Landschut and Liegnitz, in 1761 at Schweidnitz and in 1762 at Leuthmannsdorf and Schweidnitz. ---- The regimental Inhaber changed again in 1778 -- his name was Count Olivier Patrick Wallis -- and that year they occupied the Netherlands for a short time and then marched back to Bohemia where they remained with the main army all through 1779 without having to fight.

(Franz Wenzel?) Wallis (Wallisch) - Inhaber of the 7th Cuirassiers until 1794. Note: In the 7YW FM Franz Wenzel Wallis highly distinguished himself (as a Colonel?) commanding IR.Loudon in the storm of Schweidnitz 1761(see Duffy Maria Theresa p.202). Possibly related in turn to the disgraced FM Georg Oliver Wallis, imprisoned for losing Belgrade 1739 in the War of the Austrian Succession.

Graf Michael Johann Wallis (Wallisch), Feld Marschal (FM), president of the War Council (Hofkriegsrat) 1792-1795, being replaced by Nostitz. Colonel-in-Chief (Inhaber) of IR.11 until 1801(presumably died then).

Graf Oliver Wallis (Wallisch), Freiherr - General of Artillery commanding the Austrian Army of Lombardy in Piedmont 1792-1795. Replaces De Wins as overall CIC of the Austro-Piedmontese Army 22nd Nov. Defeated by Schérer at Loano 23rd. His artillery and train lost at San Giacomo 24th. Rearguard fights off French pursuit at Savona and Vado 25th. Survivors reach Acqui 29th to re-organise. Replaced by Beaulieu Apr 1796. Inhaber of IR.29 until 1803. Feld Marschal Leutnant (FML) commanding 16,360 man 1st Column (or Corps) on the Danube under Charles, 1799. Ostrach 21st Mar. Stockach (Liptingen) 25th. As FZM temporarily relieves Charles as CO during his attack of illness. Commands the centre (Reserves) at 1st Zürich (Zürich Berg) 4-6th June, where he¹s seriously wounded (this seems to have put an end to his career).

    1919 - Georges, comte Wallis (1856-?) - Knights of the Golden Fleece, Austrian Fleece, in the reign of Charles I, empereur, quinzième chef et souverain de la maison de Habsbourg-Lorraine (1887-1922).

    Grand duke Carl Franz Joseph was born on 17 August 1887 in the lock Persenbeug at the Danube (Kaiser Karl I). Starting from 1894 Count Georg Wallis took over the post as a educator of the small grand duke. Wallis, who had already educated Carl's father and his uncle Franz Ferdinand, became a lifelong familiar one of the grand duke. They enjoyed a global tutorial with special stress of the languages.

    Wallisfurth: in former times if WERNER VILLAGE was called, so 1350 and repeatedly; 1738 kept it mentioned after building the there lock by the imperial field marshal von Wallis to the today's name Wallisfurth after the English landscape Wales, from where Richard Wallis 1622 emigrated, in order to step into imperial services.

    The Jewish Congregation of Wallisgrün (Neu-Wallisdorf) exists since the founding of the villages, in any case since before the year 1783. In 1812 the Temple was built, for that purpose, the Congregation received generous support from the patron, His Excellency Count Wallis from Fkolleschowitz, who donated the site, wood, etc. 121 Souls. The ceremonial bath exists since the congregation was formed.
    In the second half of the 18th century the power over Hochlibin and the surrounding communities belonged to the Counts Wallis and Wenzel Ko_ka, Prague, writes the following in his history of Hochlibin about the Jews then: "Hochlibin never had a Jewish Community of its own since the Jews here always belonged to the congregation in Wallisgrün.

    Niederleis, a meadow village south the quiet mountains. The surge tank, an irregular Renaissance system around a large yard, is situated in the midst of a verwilderten park and belongs to the current "nature park of quiet mountains" 1867 acquired Maximilian count Wallis das Schloß (the lock?), which its son Josef help to that meaning, which possesses it still today.
    Marie Gfn Wallis, Frm auf Karighmain, was born in Niederleis, 25 May 1869, and died at Mährisch-Budwitz, 23 Apr 1936.


    Other Information
    The names Wallis, Walys, Walsh, Walshman, Welshman, Welsh and Wales were derived from the Old English word Waelisc, which the Oxford Universal Dictionary shows was pronounced Wallish. The name Waelisc meant "different from" and "stranger" and was a general term for the fierce Celtic tribes of Wales and the West of England. Waelisc exists today in its almost original sound as Wallish. In the past the name Wallis would have been pronounced as Wallish in Wales br>
